Book 2 Chapter 15

Unrest

It was another calm and windy day on Air Temple Island. The sound of children's laughter, the rustling of flying lemurs in the trees, and the snoring of sleeping sky bison surrounded Korra as she meditated.

"It's good to see you've finally found peace within yourself."

Korra opened her eyes at the sound of Tenzin's voice.

"Yeah, every time I meditate I get this feeling that this spiritual energy is calling me. I don't exactly know what it wants though. It's like it wants to show me something" she explained to Tenzin.

"Hmm.. it may be the spirits wanting to take you to the spirit world" he told her.

"The spirit world! How can I get there?" Korra asked with a confused look on her face.

"As you know Korra, the avatar is the bridge between the spirit world and the real world. Through meditation, the avatar can travel to the spirit world freely," he explained.

"Do you know what it's like there?" She asked.

"My father would tell me stories when I was younger. He said the spirit world was a transcendent and quiet place. All kinds of spirits reside there. One of the oldest spirits that resides there is Koh. Many call him the face stealer" he said dramatically.

Korra listened intently.

"My father said that if you show any emotion at all, he'll steal your face" he said.

"What!? pfffttt.. Really?" Korra said in disbelief.

"I'm not sure, father would tell us Koh would steal our face if we misbehaved so Bumi thinks he said that just so we'd be good" he laughed, "well I'm off to meet with the council, good luck with your meditation Korra."

"Alright" she waved goodbye to Tenzin as he left.

Korra closed her eyes and resumed her steady breathing. She tried to picture the Spirit World based off of Tenzin's description. She could feel this sensation of something, something calling to her, but what?

*Do you need help* she thought. And that's when she saw this dark fog, something was moving around in it. For a quick second she saw two bright glows, almost as if they were eyes peering at her.

She jerked back and opened her eyes, "whoa... what was that?" She wondered as she breathed heavily.

She took in the fresh air and stood up. "I've got to tell Tenzin about this" *grrrrrrggglle* "hehe but first lunch I suppose" she laughed as she patted her hungry stomach.

"Mmmm.. Pema, everything smells so good" Korra said as she entered the house. She gently shut the door behind her. Force of habit now ever since the baby was born. Everyone took extra care not to make too much noise just in case Rohan was sleeping.

Pema had set the table and was serving lunch to the children.

"Just in time Korra, go ahead and start eating while I go get Rohan" the mother of four walked away to grab the littlest of the bunch.

"Korrraaaa come sit next to me!" Ikki shrieked.

"Heh alright" she winced.

"How's your meditation coming along?" Jinora asked.

"Better than usual, but today I had a weird vision thing... I don't know how to describe it because I felt like I was really there ya know" Korra tried to explain to the young air bender.

"Hmmm.. have you talked to daddy yet?" Ikki asked.

"No, he left before I could" she replied.

Once they were all done with breakfast the three girls helped clean up while Pema was busy with the baby. After Korra finished helping Jinora and Ikki, she headed off to retrieve Naga.

"Bye kids" Korra waved "were going to Republic City."

Naga was quite content after the nice swim to shore. The two made their way to Police Headquarters. They stopped at the door way. Korra hopped off Naga and motioned for her to stay put as she entered the building.

She walked in and stopped behind one of Chief Beifong's new recruits, "Excuse me Officer... I was wondering if you could help me with something" she said slyly.

The tall Officer with dark hair and auburn eyes turned around to meet the Avatar's gaze.

"Anything for you Miss, it is my duty to protect and serve" Mako said with a smirk.

Korra smiled and leaned in to give her boyfriend a kiss, "I missed you, how's work?"

"Just about done. We were out patrolling all day. Let me go file these forms real quick then we can head out" he gave Korra a quick peck on her forehead then scurried off.

Korra went and sat down on a bench, but it wasn't too long before Lin appeared.

"You didn't think you could just walk in here and leave without me hearing about it did you" the stern Chief of Police hovered over her.

"Lin! Good to see you. I just thought you would be busy. With all that Tenzin has you doing now days" she hastily replied.

"Yes, well being a council member and chief of police is no walk in the park, but I always have time for you Korra," she stated.

A smile formed on Korra's face as she thought back to her first day in Republic City. Lin could have cared less about her, but now the two are on such great terms. She felt very lucky to have so many wonderful people in her life.

"Bolin and the other metal bending students miss you and wonder when you'll be back in class" Lin said.

"Oh, well I got caught up trying to figure out how to get to the Spirit World. Lately, I've been spending my days meditating. At least that's what Tenzin's been advising me to do" she said somewhat apologetically.

"Well you are the Avatar. You're Avatar duties come first. Good luck with your meditation Korra, and if you need a break, you know where to find us" Lin placed a hand on the young girl's shoulder, and then walked away.

"Alright, ready to go!" Mako said racing back to Korra.

The pair exited the building hand in hand. Mako greeted Naga then he took a seat right behind Korra, and before she knew it his hands made their way around her waist as he held onto her.

They stopped at Narook's for dinner. Naga yawed and rested her head on top of her paws. Korra left Naga in the same spot she always does, right outside by the window near their usual table.

Mako pulled Korra's seat out for her before she sat down.

"Such a gentleman, thank you" she giggled.

"Ahh, I can't believe how great it feels to be a part of Chief Beifong's team" Mako stated.

"You like it a lot, I can tell. And you don't look half bad in that uniform either" she winked at him.

That put a smile on his face. "Yea, it just feels good ya know. I just want to make a difference. I booked 10 guys in the past 2 days. They're all notorious gang members. I just want those kinds of people off the streets" he clenched his fist.

"That's great, but take it easy. I don't think you need to overdo it" Korra said calmly while taking a sip of her tea.

"I'm not over doing anything. I'm making sure Republic City stays safe. If there was a guy like me patrolling the streets years ago then maybe my parents would still be alive" he said sternly.

Korra looked at him. She saw the way his eyes burned a fiery red when he talked about his parent's death. "So that's why you became a Police Officer? To prevent that from happening to someone else?" she asked as she placed one of her hands on top of his.

"Yea, I guess so. Who knows, maybe I'll even find the guy who did it" he said taking his hand away from hers.

"At least promise me you won't go looking for trouble" she said with a heavy heart.

The thought of losing Mako was too much to bear so she decided to think of something else.

"My meditating is paying off. I think I'm close to entering the spirit world" Korra interjected.

"That's great! You'll get their soon I know it. You are pretty amazing after all" he stated.

"Heh thanks" Korra blushed.

"I've been sensing this spiritual energy around me lately, hopefully I can figure out what it is" she tensed up thinking about what she saw or at least thought she saw earlier.

"Whatever it is, you'll figure it out" he said reassuringly.

The two finished their dinner and enjoyed a nice midnight stroll before heading back to the island.

"I am beat" Mako exhaled as he hung his jacket on the coat rack.

Korra embraced her boyfriend and rubbed his back. Mako started to drift off in her arms but caught himself and jerked back up.

"I'm going to get ready for bed, if you need someone to cuddle with you know where to find me" he winked.

He kissed her on the forehead before he headed to his room.

After Korra changed, she tip toed quietly to Mako's room trying not to make a sound as she passed the children's bedroom. Spirits forbid Ikki wakes up. She made quite the commotion the last time Mako tried to come to her room in the middle of the night. Thanks to air bending, Korra was much lighter on her feet than him.

She opened his room door slightly and slid right through. She looked over and saw Mako listening to a police scanner.

She walked up to the scanner and turned it off. "No more" she told him. He didn't argue.

Mako lied down in his bed and Korra joined him. The two snuggled up together. Mako rested his head on top of hers as Korra started to doze off. Before he fell asleep he took one last gaze at her. The moonlight from the window shined softly on her face. This is when Mako thought Korra looked the most beautiful, but never told her.

He brushed back her bangs and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. His eyed were refusing to stay open any longer and fell asleep shortly after.
