ZUKO'S POV
"Oh and Zuko?" Felicity's called again as if I wasn't in a hurry and everything was fine.
I whipped around to face her. I didn't have time for this, "What is it now..."
Before I could finish speaking Felicity slid her hand around my neck and gripped my shirt as she pulled me to her. Of all the ways I had pictured kissing her for the first time this certainly wasn't one of them. I knew I should have pulled away. Uncle was standing right there, but she was just...well she was Felicity. With everything that has happened between us it was almost impossible to pull away from her.
Why did she have to be so soft and smell so good? And her lips... Red! Red and perfect and sweeter the lychee juice. I had been waiting so long to kiss her. I tried to fight it because I knew if I didn't things would change permanently between us. At least now I knew that she was with me. She worried and cared about my mission and for me.
I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her closer to me, she was so warm. Her hair felt like strands of silk sliding around my fingers. I didn't want to pull away from her, but I had to find a way in and get to the avatar before Zhao.
Zhao! The thought of him pulled me back into reality. I couldn't kiss or hold Felicity while Zhao was in my mind.
Before I had the chance to break the kiss Felicity pulled away from me, "That…That's just something for you to…" She looked up at me, "to think about when you get cold out there." Her eyes seemed so much darker than before. Normally they are a light grey, but now they were a deep blue.
I had to force myself to let go. As I did, Felicity laid her head on my shoulder.
She wrapped her arms around my waist, "Be careful and don't let anyone see you. I'll come find you when you get lost. Just stay safe and stay warm."
It was a good thing she wasn't looking up at me just now, because I was grinning ear to ear. I cleared my throat and held her to me, "I will. If you see your sister… you can go with her….if you want."
Felicity reached up and touched my scar, "You need me more, and I can't leave you now. Not after that," she just smiled at me.
I normally hated it when people drew attention to my scar, it was my burning shame. Although, when Felicity would touch it, she seemed to cool the burn just for a moment. She never hesitated or was afraid of it.
I closed my eyes and placed my hand over hers and held it there for a moment, "Thank you." As much as I didn't want the gentle softness of her hand to leave my face, I made myself pull away and turned to the boat.
"Remember, follow the seal things," She reminded me again.
"I know, Felicity," I answered over my shoulder as I stepped into the boat.
Uncle Iroh then added, "Remember your breath of fire. It could save your life out there."
"I will," I replied to Uncle before I began to lower myself.
Uncle Iroh called out to me one last time, "And put your hood up. Keep your ears warm!"
"I'll be fine." I continue to lower farther down. I know he was worried and I understood why, but I had to focus now. Both Felicity and Uncle had made doing it that much harder.
I pulled on my hood when the boat touched the water. The wind blew over the ice sea and it felt like needles when it hit me. I looked ahead for a moment to try and find the easiest path through the glaciers. I was looking for Felicity's turtle-seals when I heard a quiet voice in my head.
It sounded almost like a prayer.
'Be safe, Zuko,' Felicity's voice echoed in my head. She sounded worried and it was somehow a comfort to know she was in a way looking out for me.
'I will.' I wanted Felicity to know I was going to be fine. I wanted her to focus and stay calm, because if she did then I couldn't as well, 'I promise, I will.'
'You better, or I'll beat you up!' Her voice sounded happier that time, calmer.
I didn't worry about replying. She was fine, and so was I. Nothing else needed to be said. I turned my attention out at the icy water. I had to keep my eyes peeled for Felicity's turtle-seals. I wish she wouldn't be so cryptic with her clues. Why do girls have to be like that? Why can't they just say what they mean? I'm not a mind-reader like she is. I don't know what she's thinking. It's not fair that I don't know what she's thinking, but she always knows what I'm thinking.
But enough of that, I really did need to find Felicity's turtle-seals.
ALMOST AN HOUR LATER
How many turtle-seals were in the North-Pole anyway? They were everywhere! This is why I hate her mind numbingly cryptic clues! I am going to kill Felicity for sending me on this wild goose case. Forget it! I don't care how much she knows about the future I'm wasting time with these turtle-seals.
I rowed past many of them, navigating my way through the path of ice spikes. The walls of the Water Tribe were just ahead of me. I had no idea which of the seals to follow my only other choice was to find a way up the wall. That proved to be almost impossible. A Water Tribe patrol was on constant guard. If not for these scattered ice spikes I'd be a sitting turtle-duck. I continued toward the wall until I found a large enough ice spike to hide my canoe.
I pulled the canoe up onto the ice, and watched the guard for any blind spots they might leave open. It was pointless there were just too many Water Tribe guards marching atop the wall. I turned and leaded back against the ice when I noticed a group of turtle-seals resting by a hole in the ice. One seal plunged head first into the icy water. 'It can't be…'
"Where are they going?" I watched them for a moment. None of them came back up out of the ice, "They're coming up for air somewhere ..."
I walked towards the hole in the ice and took a deep breath, 'If Felicity is right about this, I'll never hear the end of it. Then again she's never been wrong…Not yet, at least.'
ALICE'S POV
Yue, Katara, Aang, and I headed to the spirit oasis. Finally we made it to someplace warm. Water bender or not, I still didn't like being cold. Aang sat down next to the water where the koi fish swam in their circular dance together. He had finally crossed over and I knew Zuko would be popping up soon. I wasn't in the mood to fight him I would let Katara handle that. He wasn't the one that was going to hurt the Koi fish and Yue.
I was waiting for Zhao. I don't care what Felicity said there had to be a way to help Yue. I may not be much of a fighter, but I am smart. I wasn't going to let that snake touch the Koi. If he doesn't kill the fish then Yue doesn't have to become the moon spirit in its place.
Yue looked worried as she watched Aang's tattoos glow, "Maybe we should get some help."
Katara just smiled in Aang's direction, "No, he's my friend. I'm perfectly capable of protecting him."
"Well, aren't you a big girl now." Zuko mocked. He was right on time.
Katara looked more dismayed then I had ever seen her, "No ..."
I reached over and grabbed Yue and pulled her behind me, "Come on, We have to keep you out of the line of fire," I whispered to her. I knew Zuko wasn't after her, but she was a princess and I was determined to keep her safe.
Zuko moved towards Katara, "Yes. Hand him over and I won't have to hurt you," he demanded. Zuko kicked up his leg, and sent a fire blast Katara's way. She blocked it off, but he fired more blasts at her from his hands.
Small burst of flames flew in Yue's and my direction, but they were easy to block. Plus we were surrounded by water so making a strong enough shield to keep the flames away from Yue was child's play. I looked over my shoulder at her as Zuko and Katara started to fight, "Come on, we have to get Sokka and Appa, we are going to need them both."
Yue looked confused, "How do you….."
Zuko continued to fire blasts and Katara bent up water shields to deflect the attacks.
"Just go!" I didn't mean to be short with her, but there was no time. I grabbed her hand and ran towards the court yard. "Katara can handle herself, trust me."
I know that Zuko was going to get the upper hand at sun rise, but we really were going to need Sokka and Appa. Yue ran ahead of me toward the barrack where Sokka was with the other Water Tribe warriors. I slowed my running to a stop, and turned towards a nearby storage building.
"What are you doing?" Yue yelled ahead of me.
I turned back towards her and waved, "Just go get Sokka. I'm going to help Katara. Hurry!"
"Okay!" She ran off without another word.
When she was well out of sight I forced open the storage building. There had to be something big enough for me to use, but it couldn't be too big, I still needed to be able to carry it.
"Ah Ha! Perfect!" I don't care what Felicity says, I'm not going to let Zhao hurt the Koi fish. He is not going to hurt Yue!
SUN RISE – BACK AT THE SPIRIT OASIS
"Katara, Katara wake up!" When I finally made it back to the Oasis, Katara was unconscious and laying on the ground. I knew I wasn't going to get back in time, but that was okay. I was able to get ahold of everything I needed for my plan.
"Aang!" Katara's eyes snapped open and she started searching desperately for Aang.
I took her hand, "I'm sorry, Katara."
"No…." Her shoulders and head dropped.
Just above us Appa had arrived with Yue and Sokka, and they were preparing to land. Sokka jumped down and ran over to Katara, "What happened? Where's Zuko?"
"Sokka…" I tried to smooth things but Katara interrupted me.
"He took Aang. He took him right out from under me." She looked ashamed and completely dismayed.
"It's ok, Katara, you can catch him." I put my hand on her shoulder then looked up at Sokka, "You will catch him."
Sokka nodded. He knew exactly what I was trying to tell him, "Where did they go?"
"Out into the snow," I pointed up over the ice wall to the north.
Katara sat down and continued to hang her head, "I can't believe I lost him."
Sokka walked over to his sister, "You did everything you could, and now we need to do everything we can to get him back." He stared down at Katara, who in turn, looked up at her brother with tear filled eyes. "Alice is right. Zuko can't have gotten far. We'll find him. Aang's gonna be fine."
"Okay." Katara closed her eyes to fight back the tears then stood up. "It's all right. You stay here, Momo, in case Aang comes back."
"Aang will come back, or at least his spirit will," I added and looked from the siblings then up at Appa. "I'll stay and tell Aang you're looking for him. When you see a beam of light you'll know he has returned to his body. That's where Zuko is hiding him."
"Thank you, Alice," Sokka nodded then all three of them, Sokka, Katara, and Yue mounted Appa's back, "Yip, Yip."
I watched them fly away, "Now, time to get to work."
I ran over to the trees and bushes where I had hidden my secret weapon: a large bucket, one big enough for two koi fish to swim comfortably in. I carried the bucket over to the wall of ice; I needed a clever hiding spot. Zhao wasn't a total idiot, as much as Fili thought he was. So I took my stance and waved my arms up. When I did a small portion of the solid ice shifted to became liquid. I dropped the water and placed the bucket into the new opening. Once it was secured, I turned to the pond.
Taking a deep breath, I raised my right arm up to eye level and let my emotions flow like water. I swirled my left arm in smooth circles then chased it with the right arm. The water in the koi pond began to swirl. I'd learned this trick from Katara when she lifted the fish out of the water while fishing with Sokka.
I moved my left leg around and turned my torso while my hands, like the koi fish, chased each other in an endless circular dance. As I turned towards the ice wall with the bucket the water and koi fish followed. So far so good, until a fire blast from the ship landed nearby. It caused the ground to move under my feet and my foot slipped on the wet grass.
I landed on my left knee and even though it hurt, I jerked my head up and was able to catch the water holding the koi fish. Most of the water was lost but I still had enough to get the koi fish into the bucket safely. I filled the bucket and bended ice to cover the secret alcove. Let's see Zhao find the fish now!
FILI'S POV - *Bullet Train (acoustic) – Stephen Swartz Feat. Joni Fatora
*Moving like the speed of sound
Feet can't keep on the ground
Can't stay in one place
Keep moving like a bullet train*
I had locked myself in my quarters. With my headphones in my ears, I listened to music from my iPhone. I managed to drown out the sounds of the siege, However, I had too many thoughts in my head and so no matter how loud or how much music I listened to I couldn't drown out the numbing thoughts.
* Darling don't you dare look down
Cause everything you have is all gone now*
Zuko and my sister were out there in the middle of a siege. I knew Zuko would be fine, but Alice….. She's not supposed to be here. We're not supposed to be here.
* Can't stay in this place
It won't be the same
Keep moving like a bullet train
Like a bullet train*
Will Ally be safe? Did I have to fight to keep her safe? What is going to happen? Is it going to stay the same? Is it going to change?
I needed to sleep, but I just couldn't make myself. Alice isn't sleeping, neither is Zuko, or Uncle Iroh, why should I?
Luckily I had something to keep my hands busy. I grabbed my bag from home and packed it to overflowing. I wrapped my tea-cup in a silk scarf. There were a lot of little things Zhao had "given" to me that I could sell for easy money. With the journey to come, Zuko, Uncle Iroh, and I were going to need whatever I could get my hands on. I had to keep my bag as light as possible. I was going to have to carry it and I needed to be able to run when the time came.
*Moving like the speed of sound*
'Felicity, can you hear me?' Uncle Iroh's voice pulled my mind back.
It was barely a whisper so I jerked my head phones out of my ears, 'Uncle Iroh? What's happened?'
'Zhao is preparing a landing party.' Uncle sounded far away somehow, and his voice didn't seem normal. He sounded worried, 'He is sending two firebenders to your room. He thought I didn't hear him, but he wants them to guard you.'
I brushed off the news as quickly as it came, 'That's nothing new. I'm used to being guarded. Zuko always had men watching over me…'
'Yes, but my nephew didn't send firebenders to wrap your hands and shackle you. Zhao knows more about your powers, and he's not going to risk you stopping him.' Uncle Iroh took a breath to collect his thoughts. 'He's planning on destroying the Moon Spirit…'
'I know, Uncle.' I was ashamed for not telling him sooner, 'I have always known. It's hard to explain, but Zhao has to find the Moon Spirit. That is the only way the Water Tribe can win this fight. Plus, I kinda made him think that I'm the Blue Spirit.'
'WHAT?' He sounded angry more than anything else, but I knew it was because I had put myself in danger. 'It's no wonder he hasn't thrown you over board. How could you be so reckless? You and Zuko both….'
'I know, Uncle Iroh,' Well, I sort of knew, just let me play this out. I'm in Zhao's head, and I need him to keep me close. I'm not sure what my being here might have changed so I need to be in the middle of it. Just trust me.'
'Very well,' Iroh's voice sounded calm and normal again, 'but I'm going to tell you the same thing I told Zuko. There is no way I will let you do this without some back up.'
'Thank you, and if you see my sister…' Before I could finish there was a bang at my door.
"My lady?" the firebender's voice, I knew it, "Open the door, please, my lady."
I pulled my cloak over my shoulders and tied it tight. It was so heavy it would hide my bag underneath, "Coming."
'Felicity?' Uncle Iroh echoed in my mind. 'Don't worry, if I see her I won't let anything happen to her.'
I twisted the lock but before I could pull the door open it was pushed, "Please forgive me for this, my lady."
"Chan?" I stared up at him in shock. No, this can't be right. If he was here, who else was too? "What are you doing here? You and the rest of the crew were supposed to be on the rear ships."
"Come on, boy, don't get soft." The other firebender grabbed me by the upper arm.
"Hey," I jerked back away and held up my hand, fingers spread. "I would watch it if I were you. I don't like being man-handled."
Chan backed up right away, but the other man didn't, "I would listen to her, Lang, the lady can do something a lot more powerful than firebending."
"Not if she wants you and the rest of the late Prince's crew to make it out of this siege." The firebender called Lang grinned at me evilly.
Chan opened his month but didn't say anything. He looked too afraid to. I had seen him charge in alongside Zuko. He didn't get spooked easily.
My eyes darted over at Chan, "What do you mean?"
"A lot can happen in the middle of battle." He wrapped his hand around my wrist and squeezed, "If you want your friends to make it to the end of this battle you'll be a good little girl, or whatever you are." He pulled me forward and leaned down until his mouth was inches from my ear, "I have orders to kill the kid if you so much as look like you're going to use those super powers of yours."
I stared at Chan as the threat sank into my brain. Zhao, that dirty bastard, he wasn't playing fair. I'm sure he realized how close I had gotten to the crew, but I never thought he would pull something like this.
Chan looked just as worried as I felt, "We are here to see that your powers stay contained, my lady. Please don't fight back."
"Now, as the kid said, close your fist," Lang ordered.
I curled my fingers together. In no time Chan and Lang began wrapping my hands closed. Lang forced me to turn around as he chained my hands together behind my back.
"If Zhao thinks this can stop me, he's out of his mind." I hissed as the metal locked around my wrists.
"Say whatever you want, but I'm willing to bet you won't risk losing the crew like you lost the Prince." Lang laughed.
You're right… I won't lose them. If there was one ace I had to play here it was the element of surprise. I put on my best poker face on before he turned me back around to face him. I couldn't hide the grin, so it wasn't the best of poker faces, but maybe if they thought I didn't care they wouldn't hurt the crew.
"What are you grinning about? Don't you even care?" He looked somehow pleased by my reaction. "I mean it! One wrong move and I'll…"
"Oh, don't worry, I'll behave." I looked past him at Chan with a smile.
He didn't say anything just nodded, "We have to get her to the Admiral. He doesn't want her out of his sight."
"You heard him, move!" Lang pushed me forward.
Balance wasn't as easy when your hands are tied behind your back. If Chan hadn't have caught my arm I would've fell face first. This was going to make looking like a powerful spirit a lot harder.
On deck, Zhao had the rhino's ready to land and the sun had already set. He looked back at me and his eyes cut right through me, and mine cut right back. I looked out over the ice at the Water Tribe. The warriors of the Water Tribe were fighting in perfect form.
Zhao held up a map, "We'll be following this map to a very special location. And when we get there, we're going fishing." He smirked and looked over his shoulder, "Bring the girl over here to me. Keep your friends close…."
"Enemies closer," I smirked, "I couldn't agree more, Zhao."
"That's Admiral to you," He hissed at me. He reached down and grabbed me by the neck of my cloak and pulled me up behind him on the saddle. "I want you to see this. It's going to be quite the show."
"We'll see."
We avoided the fighting; Zhao had another goal in mind. He was heading straight to the spirit oasis. I told myself that I needed to relax this had to happen just the way it originally happened. Zhao would kill the Moon Spirit Koi and Yue would take the place of the Moon Spirit. I just closed my eyes until we got there. I could hear all the fighting well enough; I didn't want to see it too. I could paint an image of it all if my head by the sounds alone.
The hiss of steam as fire met water. Cheers of joy and screams of pain mixed together as the warrior and soldiers fought. I heard the tanks crashing their way through the ice walls and the cheers when they came falling down.
"Just a bit farther," Zhao yelled, excitedly.
I was wiggling my hands as much as I could. Chan hadn't wrapped my right hand as tight as Lang had to my left. I was just starting to be able to open my fist before the rhino suddenly stopping and Zhao jump down.
I felt a pair of hands pulling me down. When I opened my eyes I saw Chan's sad face as he helped me down, "Sir, what about the lady?"
"Bring her to me," Zhao answered while staring down at his map, "We'll see if she is the spirit she claims to be."
Zhao lead the way through the entrance tunnel that led to the Spirit Oasis. He was followed by Lang, two other firebenders, myself, and Chan. Once the end of the tunnel drew closer I could see the light at the end getting brighter and brighter. My hand was almost completely opened, and I could feel the chi returning to my fingertips.
This was all going to be over soon, but…
"What is this?" Zhao sounded very confused. I was confused as well. Why was he so shocked? "Who are you girl? What are you doing here?"
Oh, No! It can't be.
"The name is Alice!"
No, no NO!
"I'm here to stop you, Zhao." Alice sounded so determined. I pushed forward past the firebenders. Alice was standing at the edge of the pool with her arms crossed.
"How is it you know my name?" Zhao stepped towards her but Ally didn't move.
"I know a lot more than you would think," She glared at him, "I know why you are here and I promise you won't get away with it."
"Is that so?" Zhao laughed hard before swinging his fist into the air between them. Fire shot out past his fist straight for Alice.
"No!" I tried to jump forward but Lang and Chan caught my arms.
It was so fast but Alice bent a shield of water and blocked the fire. She had gotten good. As she waved her arms icy spikes began to hover around her.
"Well, well, not bad for a little girl," Zhao clapped, "But it will take more than a few ice picks to stop me." Zhao was a firebending master, even I had a hard time holding my own against him with my strange extra juju powers.
"Oh I know," Alice didn't look worried. "It's a good thing I had already thought of that."
"What do you mean?" Zhao questioned as he tried to take another step, but an ice spike landed right in front of his foot.
"Not one more step!"
"I don't need a step, I just need a root." Zhao put all his weight on his foot and waved his hands down then forward is a large semi-circle.
"No, Zhao, stop!" I jerked and fought to try and free myself from my restraints.
Flames followed his hands as he pushed them out towards Alice. It looked as if she had been engulfed, but he was only aiming for the spikes, or so I thought.
I heard Alice cry out in pain and when the flames cleared, Alice was on her knees holding her left shoulder. The cloth of her shirt had been burned through, and the skin of her shoulder was burned under in as well.
"Alice!" I kicked and tried to fight my way forward.
Zhao turned and stared confused down at me, "You really know this girl."
"You stay away from her, or I swear you won't live long to regret it." I bit the words as they left my mouth. "Alice, go! Run!"
She didn't move. She just knelt there and forced herself to bend with one arm, "He not going to win. He might beat me, but he won't win, I refuse!"
Zhao moved towards her and kicked her out of his way. Alice winced when she hit the ground. Once Zhao past her and looked down at the water Alice began to chuckle. As she did, Zhao clenched his fists tightly together before yelling out in fury.
"Where are they, girl?" He reached down and grabbed Alice by the neck.
My heart sank at the site, "Alice, what did you do?" With my hands still wrapped and arms still chained behind my back there wasn't a thing I could do but make empty threats.
"I told you," She coughed out, "I refuse to let you win." She smiled up at him for a moment then spat in his face.
Zhao steamed with anger as he wiped his face, "Very well." Still holding her throat, Zhao grabbed the burned portion of her shoulder and squeezed. Alice cried out as he deepened the burn with his firebending.
"Alice!" I felt the wraps around my hands catch fire. "Zhao, let her go!"
"Or what?" He released her arm and moved his hand from around her neck to her hair. He pulled Alice to her knees while holding his grip. "What could you possibly do?"
"I'll kill you!" I glared holes right through him. . Heat spiraled through the air around me. I heard the firebenders behind me gasp and whisper to each other as the wraps around my hands began to smoke.
"Kill me?" He laughed again. "And how will you do that?" He pulled Ally to her feet and forced her to walk forward.
"I swear to you, Zhao, by all that's holy in this world, if you harm so much as one more hair on my sister's head I will squeeze the life out of you with my own two hands." My skin was hot and the air around me felt hot too. All I could see was red. The wraps were barely left and I was able to flex my fingers. The metal of the chains were so hot they burned, but I didn't care. All that mattered was Alice and her pain, and Zhao's payment for causing it.
"Your sister?" Zhao looked shocked but only for a moment. "I see, so you lied to me. You're no spirit. I had my doubts that you are the blue spirit, but now I'm sure."
"No, but you're about to be if you don't let her go." I lunged forward, but the firebenders where still holding me back.
"We'll see about that." Zhao grinned and looked to the two men not holding me in place, "Spread out and find the Koi fish, they have to be close by. She couldn't have taken them out of the Oasis."
"So you think," Alice smirked.
"So I know," Zhao squeezed her arm again.
Her knees nearly buckled. I had to stop this. She would have far worse than third degree burns if he kept this up.
"Stop it!" I looked to Alice and pleaded, "Where are they, Ally. Tell him, please!"
"No!" She shook her head, "I won't let him win."
"If you don't you could go into shock from the pain," tears of anger and frustration clouded my eyes, "Please, Ally!"
She didn't say another word. She simply met my gaze and shook her head again.
It wasn't long before the firebenders had combed the area, and the koi fish where nowhere to be found.
"I'm growing tired of this game." Zhao jerked Alice to face him, "Where are they?"
She held her ground and kept her month firmly shut.
He growled down at her, "Very well. Say goodbye to your sister." He created a flame in his hand that made it look like he was holding a knife of fire. He drew his hand back with a wicked smile. "Last chance." When she didn't say anything he began to thrust his hand forward.
Before the flame reached her stomach I screamed out and fire swirled through the air in sparks and burned the grass at my feet. The heat caused the men to let go of me and Zhao hesitated at the sight.
"Let her go! Let her go now, and I will tell you where she hid them," I pulled at the chains until I felt them cut into my skin.
"No, Felicity!" Alice coughed as she tried to push herself up.
"And how will you do that?" Zhao watched me suspiciously.
"The same way I spoke in your head before," my eyes were locked with his. "I'll get into her head, and find out where she hid them." I don't care what it took. I would burn this Oasis to the ground to keep Alice safe.
Zhao dropped Alice once he saw I meant what I had said, "If you really can, do it."
"Felicity, don't," Alice tried to pick herself up, but she was in too much pain.
I looked past him at Alice lying on the ground holding her wound. When my eyes turned to Zhao again, they burned with the purest hate, "I'll need my hands."
"Sir, wait," One of the firebenders spoke out, but Zhao held out his hand to silence them.
"If you are trying to trick me, not only will I kill her," he glared down at me with a grin, "but I'll wipe out all of the members of Zuko's crew."
"If you think there is anyone whose life means more to me than my sister, then really don't know who you're dealing with," I felt heat rise up off me again. All I wanted was to wrap my hands around his neck and watch the light leave his eyes. I strained against the chains, blood trickled down my fingers. "Touch her again, and I won't stop until you are wiped from the earth. I'll burn down the whole of the Fire Nation to get to you."
He didn't move. He just smirked at me, "You really are a firebender. I can see all the hate and anger feeding the fire in your eyes."
"I wouldn't be so cheery if I were you."
Zhao laughed again and waved for the firebender Lang to unchain me. I could feel the man's hands shaking at he slid the key into the lock. Once one hand was free I didn't wait for the other. I darted past Zhao to Alice's side.
"Ally?" I reached down for her.
"Don't!" She shook her head, "Please don't tell them. Yue…."
"You heard me, Ally. No one means more to me than you." I straightened my spine and forced myself not to back down from this. "Not Yue, or Aang, not even my own life is worth more to me than yours. There's no other choice for me, and even if there was I would always choose you!"
"If you tell them, I'll never forgive you." She hissed at me.
The tears broke free. I closed my eyes for a moment to push them back down again, "That's fine." I opened my eyes and stared down at her, "You don't have to forgive me," I reached down at touched her forehead with my fingertips. "You just have to live. I can carry the weight of the world of my shoulders as long as I know that you're in it."
"Felicity!" Alice begged one last time, but it was already too late.
She was a genius, my sister. Zhao never would have found them in her brilliant hiding spot, and she was right. Technically, the koi fish weren't in the Oasis anymore. She had hidden them behind a wall of ice.
I stood up, "Before I tell you I want the youngest firebender, there," I pointed over at Chan, "To take my sister to a healer."
Zhao seemed to brush off my order, "Out of the ques…."
"DO IT!" I yelled at him with my hands held out, fingers flexed. The booming bass that left my hands flow pasted all of them at pounded into the wall, cracking the ice all the way to the top, and chucks fell all around them.
"Sir?" Chan's voice shook as he moved to Zhao's side.
Zhao nodded once and Chan hurried over to Alice and lifted her into his arms. She was starting to drift into unconsciousness from the pain so she couldn't fight back.
"When I know she is safe, I'll show you the koi," I nodded at Chan, who quickly headed to the Oasis' exit.
'I'm sorry, Ally!' I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and turned my thoughts to Chan. 'Keep her safe, Chan.'
'Yes, my Lady.'
I waited until I couldn't hear him anymore before I turned to the wall. The ice was easy enough to melt, and when the bucket was exposed the other firebenders carried it to the pool. The Koi fish were back where they belonged, but not for long.
Zhao scooped the white koi fish into a sack at held it up out of the water. The poor thing wiggled and tried to shake its way free, but as the shaking slowed the moon turn blood red. I forced myself to watch, to face my choice, but I can't say I felt any regret. Alice was safe, and that's all the proof I needed to know I made the right choice.
Zhao held up the bag to the sky, "I am ... a legend, now! The Fire Nation will, for generations, tell stories about the great Zhao, who darkened the moon. They will call me, Zhao the Conqueror, Zhao the Moon Slayer, Zhao the Invincible!" Just when his speech seemed to be at its most glorious peek Momo leaped down on Zhao's head. "Ugh ... get it off! Get it off!"
Shortly after Aang, Sokka, Katara, and Yue arrived to the Oasis with Appa. They were prepared to attack with weapons ready.
Zhao smirked at them, "Don't bother." He held up his fist to the bag, treating to kill the moon spirit within.
Aang lowered his staff, "Zhao, don't!"
Zhao didn't even seem to hear Aang's plea, "It's my destiny, to destroy the moon and the Water Tribe."
Aang tried to reason with him, "Destroying the moon won't hurt just the Water Tribe. It will hurt everyone, including you. Without the moon, everything would fall out of balance. You have no idea what kind of chaos that would unleash on the world."
"He is right Zhao." Uncle Iroh moved past the firebenders towards Zhao and the pool. He looked over at me, but I couldn't bear to meet his gaze. 'Felicity, your wrist?'
I just shook my head.
Zhao seemed to mock Iroh when he spoke, "General Iroh, why am I not surprised to discover your treachery?"
Iroh pulled his hood away from his head, "I'm no traitor, Zhao, the Fire Nation needs the moon too, we all depend on the balance. Whatever you do to that spirit I'll unleash on you ten-fold. Let it go, now!" He ordered as he took his firebender stance. 'Felicity, go and find Zuko.'
I didn't wait to answer or see what happened next. I snuck around to Appa and claimed up to his saddle. Zuko was lying on his side with his hands and feet tied. He looked as if he was still knocked out.
I took the knife from his bag and cut the rope around his wrists, "Zuko," I rolled him over and patted his face. "Zuko, you have to wake up now."
His eyes fluttered open and he caught my wrist. I winced when he did. I wasn't angry like before. Anger made me forget the pain, but now shame had taken over and made the pain all too real.
"Felicity? What are you?" Zuko used my wrist to pull himself up, unaware of the cuts and deep burses.
Behind us, Zhao had put down the spirit and the moon's light returned.
I tried to pry my hand out of his grip "Zuko, please," then I clinched my fist to fight back to pain.
He watched me closely before looking at his own hand. The blood from my wounds was spread across his fingers, "What happened? Who….."
Before he could say another word the sounds of Uncle Iroh and Zhao's fighting filled the Oasis, and the light of the moon was snuffed out.
"We have to go, now!" I cut the rope around his feet and pulled him to the edge of the saddle. "If we don't move quickly Zhao will get away."
As we ran through the city's allies a blue light moved through the water. Aang and the Ocean spirit moved as one through the water. Zuko ran through to an opening of a courtyard, but before the Ocean Spirit saw him I was able to pull him back to the shadow of the ally.
"You can't let that Spirit see you." I held him close and waited for the Spirit to move on.
Zuko nodded and when the coast was clear we continued our pursuit of Zhao. He was trying to escape unseen, but Zuko jumped over the edge of the stair way to the second level. As he did, Zuko kicked the air and bent a flame that cut off Zhao retreat. Zuko still had the high ground, and when Zhao looked up to see who his attacker was you would think he had seen a ghost. Seeing that glint of fear in his eyes gave me more pleasure than I could describe.
Zhao gazed up in confusion at the prince, "You're alive? But Felicity said…."
I walked down the stairs grinning at him, "Oops, I lied!"
Zuko's anger overtook him, "You tried to have me killed!" He attacked with two strong fire blasts before he jumped down to Zhao's level.
Zhao was able to dodge, unfortunately. He caught his balance and faced Zuko, "You're the Blue Spirit, an enemy of the Fire Nation! You freed the Avatar!"
Zuko moved through the smoke of his own attack to confront Zhao face to face, "I had no choice." Zuko pressed his attack. Blast after blast but Zhao still managed to block.
Zhao might have blocked Zuko's continuous burst of fire, but the flames burned through his cloak, "You should have chosen to accept your failure. You're a disgrace! Then, at least, you could have lived!" He reached up to his neck to remove his cloak and threw it aside before returning his own attacks.
They went back and forth in the endless dance of anger and fire. Zuko had forced Zhao down to the lower part of the city. I tried to keep up with them, but they were moving so fast. When I finally reached them they were facing off on the bridge. They kicked and punch at each other, fire flew through the sky.
The light of the moon had already returned, but the two of them were so focused on their attacks they didn't seem to notice.
When Zhao's anger finally got the better of him Zuko was able to gain the upper hand by knocking Zhao off balance. Zuko hammered flamed punches down at Zhao again and again until Zhao hit the ground.
Zhao looked up and finally realized the moon was back and shining brightly in the night's sky, "It can't be!" He was so fixated he didn't see the glowing mass of energy in the water under the bridge.
The Ocean Spirit reached up and engulfed Zhao in what looked like a giant hand.
"Zuko get out of there," I called out to him and just in time Zuko was able to roll out of the Ocean Spirit's Trap.
Zhao struggled to free himself, but his hands slid through the water. It was no use. Zuko watched the Spirit begin to carry Zhao away. He was conflicted, I knew, however he still jumped up onto the railing of the bridge and reached out to Zhao.
"Take my hand!" Zuko held out his hand and for a moment it looked as if Zhao would take it, but he pulled away from the prince in defiance only to disappear under the water, finally dragged down by the spirit.
I walked up behind Zuko and grabbed his other hand. I wasn't going to let him fall. Zuko stared down at the water for a moment. I could see on his face he hoped Zhao would resurface, but he never did.
"Zuko we have to get out of here." I squeezed his hand.
He didn't look at me just continued to stare at the water a moment longer.
I did secretly hope to see Alice before I left. To make sure she was safe and recovering, but if the Warriors of the Water Tribe found Zuko his fate would be worse than Zhao's.
"Please, Zuko." I pulled him back towards me. He obeyed and jumped down. When he touched ground in front of me he pulled me to him and held me close.
"I failed," He took a deep breath. I thought he meant he failed to get Aang but he squeezed me tighter, "I couldn't save him. Why didn't he take my hand?"
I wrapped my arms around him and did what I could to give him comfort. He pulled back keeping his arms still circled around me and looked back at the water on last time. I slid my arm between us and reached up.
When he felt my hand on his jaw he looked back at me, "Why?"
I just shook my head slowly, "That's one thing I don't have an answer to. I'm sorry."
He reached up and held my wrist. When his fingers moved over my wounds I winced and started to jerk my hand away, but I stopped myself. He moved his fingers away from my cut and bruised wrist to my hand.
"What happened?" He held my hand as gently as if it was wounded as well.
"I'll tell you later," I started to turn away, but he held me firmly in place against him. I couldn't help but laugh. Just a few months ago he would have killed me for being this close to him and now he was making sure I stayed there. "I promise, I will tell you later, but first we have to get out of here."
He didn't move for a moment just glared down at me as if he didn't believe me. So I pushed myself up and quickly pressed my lips to his. I didn't want to let myself get carried away, we really need to get out of here.
When I pulled away he tried to follow me for a second kiss, but I pressed my index finger to his lips, "No…Later, I promise, I'll explain everything. Now come on! Uncle Iroh is waiting for us."
He gave me a low disapproving growl, but I just laughed and laced my fingers with his. By the time we made it to Uncle Iroh, he was waiting with a make shift raft he'd pieced together from the wreckage of some of the ships.
The sun was already rising in the sky. This terrible siege was finally over. I sat on the edge of the raft and reached out with my mind. I wasn't sure if she could hear me or if she would even listen, but I needed to know Alice was all right. I guess we were too far away by this point I couldn't even reach Aang or Katara. Zuko move to sit down next to me so I finally called it quits for now.
Uncle Iroh was working with the sail to catch the wind and he looked over his shoulder at Zuko, "I'm surprised Prince Zuko, surprised that you are not at this moment trying to capture the Avatar."
Zuko looked out over the water at the wreckage and the city, "I'm tired."
Uncle Iroh placed his hand on Zuko's shoulder, "Then you should rest. A man needs his rest."
I smiled when Zuko looked over at me, "Lay down, it's my turn to be the pillow."
He nodded the laid down across the raft with his head on my lap. I set my hand on his chest. When I did Zuko gently tugged my sleeve up and exposed my wrist. He stared at it for a while before pulling my sleeve back down and wrapping his fingers around mine. After a moment he closed his eyes and I felt his breathing slow down. I wasn't looking forward to this sea journey, but at least next time it would be his turn to be the pillow.
I looked out over the sea once last time, 'If you can hear me, Ally, I'm sorry. Please be all right.'
I'm not sure how long it would take to get there, but Earth Kingdom here we come. We had a lot ahead of us, some good some bad. Mostly bad, but at least there was one bright shining star on my horizon, soon, very soon, Fussy Pants is going to grow himself some hair!
