A/N: Ever since I heard this song this story's been trying to be written.

Angry words were exchanged, soon all Elphaba saw of her lover were the tail-lights of his car. Her eyes burned with tears as the blows on her heart fell onto her. She slowly made her way back to her dorm room, where Galinda was already asleep. She couldn't sleep. She began to write letters, releasing every feeling that she had for and against him. Soon she fell asleep at her desk.

Weeks passed, there was a pool that bet how long it would take for them to get back together. The weeks turned to months, and soon it had been three months since the breakup. Elphaba sat in the back of the choir room, hoping Mrs. Mason wouldn't decide today would be the day they do that song. The one that described every emotion that she had felt since the breakup. Of course, the heavens above had other plans. "Elphaba, Fiyero, why don't we practice What Can I Say?, shall we?" Elphaba slowly stood up and went to the front of the room. She turned away from him as the music started. She could feel his eyes boring into her head.

Piercing words, eyes are red
Watched your tail lights in the rain
Empty heart filled with regret
I know we were both to blame
And I'm not sorry that it's over
Before the way we let it end
So I said all I had to say
In letters that I threw away

And you should know, please believe me
I've picked up the phone a thousand times
And tried to dial your number
But it's been so long
It's never easy
It's like tryin' to spin the world the other way
What can I say?
Elphaba turned to look into those piercing blue eyes, trying to show him that it wasn't just the song's lyrics talking.

How did it come to this?
I think about you all the time
It's no excuse, but I wish
That I never made you cry
His hand gently pushed her chin to look at him.
I'm not sorry that it's over
But for the way we let it end
I couldn't find the words to say
And you should know, please believe me
I've picked up the phone a thousand times
And tried to dial your number
But it's been so long
It's never easy
It's like tryin' to spin the world the other way
So what can I say? (What can I say?)
What can I say? (What can I say?)
I hate to think all you had of me (I said all I had to say)
Is a memory I left you, the space between what was meant to be (In letters that I threw away)
And the mess that it turned into
And you should know, please believe me
I've picked up the phone a thousand times
And tried to dial your number
Tears were running down her face as were Fiyero's face.
And it's been so long
It's never easy
It's like tryin' to spin the world the other way
Their lips began to move closer together.
It's like tryin' to spin the world the other way
Closer.
What can I say?
Closer.
What can I say? (What can I say?)

Their lips lightly touched for the first time in three months. The room broke into cheers as Elphaba went back for a deeper kiss. Her eyes flickered closed as Fiyero pulled her closer. Elphaba wove her fingers into his silky chocolate locks as all thought except for him left her mind.

Mrs. Mason sat back and gave her star pupils A pluses for singing the song in key, and for making her glad she had given them this duet.

End story.
