Lonely Jungle

Chapter 1

In the dirty streets of a city full of bursting with people as far as the eye could see.

with its neon light and flashing colour and its tall buildings which loomed over the busy streets. what little moonlight found its way through the thick dark clouds of smog; was drowned by an endless sea of lights and colour. The earth ruined by greed was now little more than a husk of what it was.

No one alive remembers its days of lush fields and thick jungles teeming with life and vibrance. That was but a fairy tale for such a place could only exist in the confines of fiction. Jake often dreamt of freedom of flying far away and escaping the confines of his body. His time bound to a chair had made him bitter. The peak of physical condition; ready and willing to perform any task and overcome any obstacle was tossed aside like a broken tool. he became a marine for hardship, to be hammered on the anvil of life.

The death of his brother was a shock to him, a guy with a knife took Tommy's life for his money. Just days before he was going to set off to pandora. The suits told him about what Tommy was going to do there they offered him a place in his stead because they were twins he could step into his shoes. Jake was never much of a scientist that was Tommy's field of expertise; he was the one who wanted to go light years away to some distant moon to find answers. Jakes was just another dumb grunt. Another cog in the wheel getting sent somewhere he was going to regret.

Waking from Cryo was a strange experience, didn't feel like 6 years had passed he didn't dream while he was under, he slept the sleep of the dead. Pandora a place people grew up hearing stories about; somewhere Jake didn't think he would ever end up. funny how life was. A place his brother spent his whole life working to see ever since we were first shown videos of the planet.

Time Skip

The aircraft touched down in the wild jungles of pandora Jake, Norm and Dr Grace. "Shut it down we're going to stay awhile," Grace said. As the defending sounds of aircraft quieted down. "Stay with the ship one idiot with a gun is enough," Grace said to the marine who was part of the security detail. As Norm and Grace grabbed their equipment Jake couldn't help but smile as he surveyed his surrounding the greenery which littered the undergrowth of the Jungle was a breathtaking sight. The different shades of green leaves and shrubbery with the occasional blue or green plant dotted around. The long vines hanging from the towering trees overlapped one another, creating a web of vines and branches. The faint sounds of distant animals howling, and chirping echoed through the jungle.

They pushed forward Jake leading the group with his gun tight in his hand as he assessed his surroundings as if preparing for an imminent threat. At the sound of a branch shaking behind him Jake spun around his weapon ready; only to be met with a group of small four armed creatures. They were swinging from branches. their skin was blue and yellow with a diamond shape on their foreheads. Upon noticing Jake one of the group stopped mid-swing to stare at him.

"Prolemuris. They're not aggressive." Grace said.

Jake still followed their movements with his eyes gun at the ready.

"Relax, marine. You're making me nervous." Grace said as she pushed the barrel of the gun toward the ground while staring at Jake's annoyance visible in her eyes. Approaching what looked like a small hut which looked like it had fallen into disrepair. The flora had started to grow on and around the hut. Jake knew that no one had stepped foot in this place for a long time.

"So, how will they know we're here?" Norm said.

"I'm sure they're watching us right now," responded Grace.

The Group made their way inside the long abandoned hut. The inside of the hut carried an almost eerie feeling to it. The way light had pierced the roof to form beams of light; shining on a book which was on the floor. The way the wood creaked and moaned as he stepped on it. As Jake looked around, he noticed the chalkboard; several desks and chairs littering the place, it was a school he thought to himself. His suspicions were only confirmed by what Grace said next. "This was our school. Now it's just … storage. The kids were so bright. Eager to learn. Picked up English faster than I could teach it."

As norm and Grace were gathering the equipment needed. Norm picked up a copy of the Lorax from the ground It looked worn and some of the pages were creased and bent like they had been read a lot before it was discarded. "Here," he said as he handed the book over to Grace.

"Oh, yeah. I love this one." Grace said with a hint of fondness in her tone. "The Stingbats must have knocked them down. I keep hoping someone would come back and read them."

Jake looked up and saw small blue bat-like creatures which hissed and screeched while hanging upside-down resembling a bat when they did so.

"why didn't they come back?" asked Norm curious as to why such a place would be abandoned if it was loved by the children.

Upon closer inspection of the chalkboard, Jake noticed bullet holes. His mind started to put together what had likely caused the children not to come back. The bullet holes are a clear indication of what could have happened. An accident? Or was it something more sinister? The marines likely didn't care much for the natives. Most saw them as a threat. But to do something like this unprovoked.

"The Omaticaya learned as much as they needed to about us," stated Grace snapping Jake back to reality. Perhaps Dr Grace would shed some light on this. However, upon further reflection, Jake concluded that she wouldn't due to her clear disdain toward him. He had a feeling that it might have been due to the events that took place here.

They left the old school and made their way deeper into the jungle. Upon reaching a certain point Grace knelt and plunged some sort of syringe into the root of a tree.

"And here I go," Grace said.

"Scanning… wow, it's that fast?" Norm Stated as both he and Grace made observations on their scanners.

Grace giddily chuckled and said, "Amazing, isn't it?"

Norm replied with a quiet "Yeah." He was enthralled by what he saw.

"So, that is the signal transduction from this root to the root of the tree," Grace explained as Jake sighed quickly turning around and losing interest in whatever was going on. He started to move away from the other two; deciding to explore the area to alleviate the boredom. He made his way behind a tree still faintly being able to hear Grace and Norm speaking. He saw a plant which was a light orange colour. Its stem gradually increased in thickness as it went up and spread out into spiral shapes. The light from the sun made these plants almost glow a warm pleasant orange. As he got closer, he could help but reach out like a curious child. When the tip of his finger made contact with the plant it shot back into the ground with such speed that Jake recoiled a bit in shock. He looked back at where Grace and Norm were and then with a mischievous grin, he touched another. Thus starting a chain reaction which caused all the plants in the clearing to shoot back into the ground. A roar caught Jake's attention as he turned to face the direction the sound was coming from. There stood a large beast its front end was like the cephalofoil from a hammerhead shark, its head hiding behind it. On the top of its head was colourful. It roared again and lowered its head preparing to attack. Jake quickly pointed his gun toward it ready to fire.

"Don't shoot. Don't shoot, you'll piss him off." Warned Grace as she rushed toward Jake; Norm following closely behind.

"It's already pissed off," Exclaimed Jake.

"Jake that Armor is too thick. Trust me" Stated Grace.

The beast began to step closer, swinging its head from side to side and breaking a branch from a tree.

"So, what do I do dance with it?" asked Jake.

"Just hold your ground," Grace replied.

Suddenly it began to charge at Jake. In a moment of desperation, Jake grits his teeth and charges back yelling at the top of his lungs. Spreading his arms out to make himself appear bigger. The beast halts only a couple of feet from Jake as it roars back at Jake before slowly backing off.

"Yeah? Come on! What else have you got? Oh, yeah. Who's bad? Yeah, that's what I'm talking about what else you got bitch" Jake shouted in triumph. A triumph that was short-lived as he heard a deep low growl behind him. Turning around he was met with a Thanator. It roared and jumped over him to pursue its prey only to be met with a herd ready to defend itself. It turned around now eyeing Jake as an easy meal. It stared predatorily at it as it slowly approached.

"So, what about this one? Run? Don't Run? What?" Jake asked as he turned to Grace and then back at the creature waiting for an answer but ready to fire at the first intimation of danger.

"Run! Definitely Run!" Grace replied a hit of fear in her voice as she backed away.

With slight hesitation, Jake turned around and began to sprint as fast as he could. Jumping over and passing between the large roots; the Thanator was not far behind as it tried to tear through the gap only to turn and go around. It quickly caught up to Jake and lunged at him. Only to be stopped by some bamboo in which it was caught. As Jake ran he tried to shake its pursuit by slipping between bamboo shoots and under the larger roots of the trees. This slowed it down slightly. Jake made a dive for a small gap under a tree; the Thanator close behind. While under there it could reach Jake. It began scratching and biting the tree hoping to create a gap big enough for it to enter. Jake opened fire at the beast. But his gun was snatched away from him by the Thanator who threw it away and resumed its assault. Losing his only weapon Jake made a mad dash from under the tree; only to be caught by the Thanator who lunged at him. Jake tried to crawl away only for it to bite his backpack. Lifting him in the air and shaking him. Jake managed to unlatch his backpack and he promptly slipped out being flung a good distance away as he did so. He started to run being noticed by the Thanator as he did so. As it started to chase him. It began to catch up when Jake made his way through some foliage; only to be met with a cliff with a waterfall and a river under him. Without even thinking he quickly jumped, the Thanator nearly falling in with him, but it managed to catch itself at the edge.

When he plunged into the chilly water narrowly missing the rocking bottom' the strong currents of the river began to carry him. He started to swim up. reaching the surface, he gasped for air struggling to stay afloat. He turned around to look back at the Thanator who stared at him from above; only to be hit by a root which was sticking out knocking him out cold.
