Disclaimer: I do not own Avatar: The Last Airbender or the song 'Hymn to the Sea' by James Horner from the motion picture 'Titanic.'
This came to me whilst listening to 'Hymn to the Sea.' I recently wrote a fic speculating on the death of Hermione from Harry Potter and so death was on my mind. Death was also on my mind since this song is very saddening. So I began to wonder how people, most importantly family, would honor Katara when she died. I am not elaborating on the whens and whys, so you may determine them for yourself. Enjoy.

Hymn to the Sea
Tears ran down everyone's faces as they watched the lonely canoe drift out to sea. Sokka stepped forward and faced his tribe, his family. Even those who weren't directly related were there. Toph and Aang were there, tears running down both their faces, forming the old gang for one last time. Zuko and Mai were there, as well as The Duke and Pipsqueak. Haru, Ty Lee, and Suki were there. All their friends were there to see Katara off. They all looked to Sokka. His face showed the signs of old age, and signs of a wisdom that comes only from knowing the worst of the world. Tears sparkled on his face as he spoke.
"Katara was the most... loving person, I have ever met. She put everyone before herself. She was ready to be disowned by her tribe in order to help the Avatar, just so the world could be at peace. She didn't care if she suffered, as long as everyone else was happy." Sokka took a deep, shuddering breath. "I think she's the type of person we all wish we could be. I mean sure, she was a nag and she could be pigheaded at times, but she was the best anyone could ever ask for. She was an amazing woman, friend, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and most importantly, the most amazing sister I could ever ask for. And I think she'd want everyone here to remember that a life is something to be celebrated, even if it's passing is sad." The whole tribe sniffled and wiped away tears, and smiled a little at what Katara would have wanted. "Katara, I think, was everything a waterbender should be. She was the sea. She was powerful, yet gentle. She was stern and commanding, yet comforting. She was relentless, yet understanding. So I think it's only fitting that we sing a hymn for her. A hymn to the sea."
And so, with Sokka leading them, the tribe sang in sad tones, with happier ones laced throughout. They remembered and reflected on a great waterbender and a great woman, but mostly, a great friend.
