Sarah: an idea I got while in the shower. I own only what I write. Please don't steal. If someone else has written something like this for this category, I don't know about it. Also, one of my first attempts at writing purely in past tense, so bear with me please.

WATER & FIRE

As I watched the two lovebirds on the couch opposite me, I thought of their distinctive elements.

The Pirate had more of a Water element about him. He was a laid back sort of person who goes with the flow of events around him, like Water. He wasn't at all brash and was difficult, but not impossible, to anger, like most people with the Water personality.

But his lover, the Thief, was like Fire: rash and acting without thinking far more often than not. He was a go-getter, quick to anger, and left those who get in his way as if they were ashes after a flame.

Fire and Water were opposites on the element chart, ever at conflict with each other. Water would douse Fire if there was enough, but Fire would turn it to steam if there was too little. In equal amounts, they usually cause mayhem whenever they meet.

But in this instance, Water went about courting Fire and Fire went along with the courtship rituals of Water. It left me to wonder if even polar opposite personalities would get along.

This thought brought my eyes to the other couple on the ship, the Captain and the Princess.

The Captain was like Earth, strong, stable, and enduring. He weathered many storms in his life and came through just as strong and lasting as Earth does.

The Princess was more Wind than anything else, flitting about her duties. She would endlessly follow every whim she had when she comes up with it rather than stick to the plan, often ending up in trouble.

Wind stripped Earth down to the rock if strong enough, but Earth never stayed down, no matter how many times Wind knocked him over.

In this case, Earth was ever faithful to Wind, despite the tongue-lashing he received again and again. And Wind only gave those lashings because she cared about Earth and worried for his safety.

Two pairings of opposite elements on one ship. The partnerships would never have worked in nature. But here, they balanced each other out somehow. They may have gotten on their partner's nerves time and again, but they were always there when the other needed them most.

So maybe opposites really do attract, as the old saying goes. It was certainly the case in this group. Perhaps, with a touch of Fate, even the most powerful Fire can be tendered by the gentlest Water. And Fate may lend Earth the strength to endure Wind's endless worry for him. Water and Fire, Earth and Wind. Who knows? Maybe even my match is my opposite in element…
