A Heart Torn
A Charah Tale By Lord Rapier
Chapter 39:
Moving forward
The ride back starts out quiet. They've removed their comms and are heading back to Baza Lotnictwa Transportowego. Sarah is in the back seat sitting as close to Chuck as humanly possible. Chuck is holding her tight. Sarah looks up, crying, she speaks softly. "I can't believe it's over. He's gone, My mom and Molly are finally safe. I'm not even sure I know how to breathe. Thank you. Chuck… Baby, there's something I need to tell you."
Gretchen and Zondra look straight ahead watching the road.
Chuck pulls her in tighter. "Did you pull the trigger?"
Sarah shakes her head, the tears are still falling, "NO. but…"
Chuck kisses the top of her head, "Then we're good, nothing is more important than your safety. I didn't like it when he threatened you."
Sarah begins to sob, "I don't get it. Why are you so good to me? I don't…"
Chuck interrupts her, "If you finish that sentence, I will put you over my knee. Right here in front of your friends."
Sarah laughs and snot comes flying out of her nose to land on his shirt. Chuck looks down. "Well, I guess no good deed goes unpunished."
She laughs again and runs her sleeve across her nose. Grabbing Chuck by the back of the head she looks him in the eye. "You always know just the right thing to say." Then she pulls him down for a kiss. The kiss goes on for a while.
Zondra whispers to Gretchen in the front seat. "Yep, I want one. I want one just like that one. Maybe Sarah will leave him to me in her will."
Gretchen laughs and punches her lightly in the arm and whispers back, "You'd have to fight me for him. You know what I'm thinking, I'm thinking Beckman's gonna need some time for that clean up. Let's see if we can't find a nice restaurant that serves wine."
Zondra puts her comms back in her ear. "Overwatch, are you still listening?"
"Overwatch here. I'll be monitoring this channel till you're all home safe. What's up."
Zondra decides to have some fun, "Tell me you gorgeous hunk of General, are there any decent restaurants on our route? We could use a little break."
"Rizzo, you're on an open channel. You need to return to home base. It's well stocked. Not to mention you have a world class chef cooking for you."
"I know John, but Sarah needs to decompress in a relaxed environment. She seems a little stressed."
Beckman breaks in, "Station Chief Rizzo, you have ninety minutes. One minute late and I'll be having a conversation with Director Bartowski about disrespectful agents. We'll talk about that gorgeous hunk of General thing later. Very unprofessional, not to mention confusing. Which general were you referring to." Zondra laughs. "Take care of Sarah. Casey keep it in your pants."
Zondra laughs. "Thank you General. We'll take good care of her; you have my word. Casey, I'm going to have to tell Julie you were naughty, such a stickler for the rules."
Casey grunts. "There's a Restaurant called The Tandoori Flame near the airfield. They serve Indian food, not that commie stuff. Be on time. I want you guys home safe."
Zondra sighs, "Aw Casey aren't you sweet? But you do know I'm going back to Naples."
"Sweet my ass. I've been stuck in this apartment with the bearded elf for two days. He's making me crazy. Not to mention I can't have a cigar in here. I know where you're headed, I'll catch you at the wedding."
"Dad, you're sitting next to me. You know I can hear everything you're saying."
"Yeah, and? Look all kidding aside, is New Bartowski okay?"
"She seems to be having a little bit of a rough time. I'm not quite sure what's going on. I've never seen her fold in like that. Chuck has her back. I figure a little time to breathe and maybe a glass of wine and she'll be okay. Casey what's all this talk about her Mom and a daughter?"
The comms go quiet for a few moments. "Yeah, look Rizzo, she's been carrying some stuff for a while. I think maybe Original Bartowski finally busted the crap dam. Ask Sarah, I have a feeling she'll be happy to explain now."
Gretchen taps Z's shoulder, "Let Sarah tell you."
"Okay John thanks for the info. I'm removing my comms now. But if you need us back, I have my cell phone." She smiles wide. "I know you have my number."
Casey grunts, and Zondra pulls the earwig out and puts it in her pocket. "So, partner, you know what's going on, don't you?"
Gretchen shrugs, "You know, spies and their secrets. Let Sarah fill you in when she's ready."
"Nothing to worry about?"
"Not anymore. I think what's going on in the back seat is five plus years of stress dissipating. She'll be okay. See, if you came and worked with us in Burbank you could keep an eye on her."
"Don't think it's not tempting. I guess it's important to me that I prove myself as Station Chief. Sarah set such an outstanding example; I need to show her that her faith in me was justified. Plus, I've got a special friend, in the area, that I enjoy spending time with. We don't get to see each other often, but when we do, it's nice."
"Really, who is he? You seem pretty chummy with Johnny."
Zondra smiles, "Yeah, Casey and I had some fun. She's a lieutenant stationed in the Med." Gretchen smiles.
Chuck speaks up, "How is Commo?"
Zondra talks over her shoulder, "She's good, she sends her regards. How're we doing back there?"
Chuck looks down at Sarah's head in his lap and whispers, "Shhhh, she's asleep. How far are we from Home Base."
Gretchen answers in a low voice. "We're heading to a restaurant near the base. We figure a civilian environment, and a glass of wine might be nice. We're about two hours out."
Chuck strokes Sarah's hair and smiles, "That's a good idea. I'm a little tired too. I'm going to try and grab a quick nap myself. Thanks for looking after us, ladies. I know that Sarah felt safer knowing that you were on the team."
Chuck sees the back of Zondra's head nodding. "Thanks for bringing me in, I can't tell you how much I appreciated it. I've also missed the two of you a lot. By the way Mama told me to say hi. Get some rest, we'll wake you when we get there."
Zondra looks in the rearview mirror. She sees Chuck's head swaying with the motion of the car. Even asleep his hold on Sarah is firm. "G, what's up with that guy. He went from a total nerd I couldn't stand, to a guy I would die for."
Gretchen speaks in a low voice. "I know, I'm in the same boat. Zondra, I gotta tell you he's been treating me so good. Did you know I'm living with them. He won't let me leave until I'm totally healed. Z, he kicked my ass, and I never laid a hand on him. He blocked every punch and kick I threw at him for almost an hour. He fights like a demon, but at the same time he didn't lay a hand on me until I left him no choice. Sarah said he was miserable for some time because he hit me. Yeah, I would follow him anywhere."
"Yeah, he kicked my ass too, it took him all of three minutes, he never laid a hand on me. He used all of my moves against me, until I was face down in the dirt, I yielded. He was upset that he got me dirty. Jeez, what happened to him?"
"Sarah told me that for the two years that they were apart all he did was work and train. Now they train together. I watch them. I can't even come close to their skills. He didn't do bad on the work front either. Even though they were separated he made her a millionaire."
"I spent those two years with her in Naples. All she did was work. She didn't talk about it, or show it, but I knew she was miserable. Her apartment was like a closet. The walls were covered with pictures of him and them together. Remember that guy Decker. He went after Sarah. Chuck was taking him apart piece by piece. I heard his screams in the street. By the time I got there Chuck was ready to apply the finishing touch with his hands.
The only time I've ever seen any mean on that guy was when he was manhandling Decker. His eyes were dark, his face was like a mask of pure anger. Sarah freaked; she stopped him. She doesn't want him killing. I took care of that schmuck. Later on, he actually felt bad about beating the crap out of him. He felt he could have handled it more calmly and nicer. So, tell me pussycat, how did you wind up in Burbank?"
"Long story made short; I screwed up one too many times. The DEA let me resign. I tried to hustle Chuck for a job. Turns out he's the better hustler. I thought for sure I was on my way to jail. Instead, he gave me a job. His partners were not happy. Casey wanted to strangle me when he found out about me and his son-in-law. He risked losing a multimillion-dollar contract to take me on. I know he didn't do it for me. He loves that woman with everything he's got. He'll do anything for her. Including putting up with me. She's the same for him." Gretchen puts on a wry smile. "I guess spies do fall in love."
"It was good working with you again. You seem different, more settled."
Gretchen nods, "Repeat a word this and I'll sic Chuck on you." Zondra laughs. "I want what they have. When they look at each other my heart melts. Casey and I walked in on them christening the dining room table the other night. They were both immediately on the same page. Calm and as gracious as can be.
Yeah, I'm more settled. I don't feel like I have to prove myself quite so much. Now I just want my team to be proud of me." A short laugh bursts out of Gretchen. "Sarah put me with her nephews for the weekend. That's Morgan and Alex Grimes' twins, MJ, and LJ. Zondra, They loved me so hard. I never had a real family. To be honest I didn't even know what the word meant.
The first time I visited her in Burbank I described it as if a yawn could yawn. But Sarah was happy there, I couldn't figure it out at the time. But I see it now. Z, you have to come to Burbank, even if it's just for a visit. My guess is once you're there you won't want to leave."
"We'll see, I have to admit you're making a good case for it. Why don't you give the sleeping beauties a shout, we're two minutes out from the restaurant."
Gretchen turns towards the back and softly says, "Chuck." He moans. "Chuck, time to wake up."
Chuck moans again and lifts his head, "Hi, what's up?"
"Hope you had a good rest, we're about to pull into the restaurant. It's Indian food. Might want to give Sarah a shake."
Sarah opens her eyes, "I'm up, I wasn't willing to give up his lap. I'll get up now. I wouldn't want you siccing Chuck on me."
Gretchen glares at her, "Damn spies." Sarah and Zondra crack up.
Chuck looks puzzled. "Hey, I'm not going after anybody, but I really need to pee."
Zondra laughs, "Uh, uh, you're not gonna catch me off guard me with that one again."
This time Gretchen looks puzzled as the others all laugh.
When they enter the restaurant Chuck takes Sarah aside, "Hon, I'm going to use the restroom. Then I'm going to go sit at the bar."
Sarah is confused. "Why? Don't you like my friends?"
Chuck gives her a look, "Very funny, you know I love your friends. Gretchen told me that Beckman only gave us ninety minutes. When we get back to the plane Zondra will be leaving. You may not see her again till the wedding. I want you to have some time with your friends without me bothering you."
"Baby, why would say such a thing, the girl's love you and so do I."
"Sarah, I'll be fine. I'll be sitting right there having a beer." He points to the bar clearly visible from the dining area. "Don't you want to tell Zondra about the wedding plans?"
"Sure, but don't you want to know about the wedding plans?"
"Will you be there?"
"That's a silly question, of course I'll be there."
Chuck smiles. "That's all I need to know."
Sarah throws her arms around him, "I love this man more than anything in the world. Thank you, Baby. Thank you for letting me have time with my friends."
"Remember, don't eat too much, you know Julian will be putting on a feast."
"Thanks Baby, I'll remember. You don't have to worry about me, I'm okay now. That nap really helped. But I do want to talk later, okay?"
Chuck puts on a surprised face and in his bad Russian accent, "Huh, Svetlana, dangerous Russian espionage agent vishes to talk to Boris. Maybe she vants talk about hootchey kootchey? Boris very excited."
Sarah laughs, "I thought you had to use the restroom. Go, I'll be watching you from across the room."
"I know you vatch, because Boris very sexy, has cute tush." He walks away wiggling all the way.
Sarah is laughing hard when she joins her friends at the table.
Zondra asks, "What was that all about? It looked like he was having a seizure."
Sarah laugh harder, "That was my husband being sexy. He was letting me know that he's giving us time together." She holds Zondra's hand. "I can't believe we have to separate in like an hour. I miss you so much."
"Yeah, I know, me too. Gretchen has been pushing hard to get me to come to Burbank."
"You know I want you to. But I also know you have to do what you have to do. How is it, working for Mary Bartowski?"
Zondra laughs, "Well it's not like I'm a direct report, there are a few levels between us. I can't complain. Lately we've been getting all the gear and resources we need."
Sarah smiles, "I have a good Mother-in-law."
Zondra gives her a dirty look, "Sarah you didn't?"
"I may have made a phone call. I mean I had to talk to her about the wedding. Plus, her people are helping to provide clearance for the guests."
"Thanks Hon, nice to know you still have my back."
The waiter comes over and puts drinks and an appetizer platter on the table. Gretchen thanks the waiter. "I hope you don't mind, I ordered while we were waiting."
Sarah picks up a fried item, "Not at all I love Samosa, but it's on me. This was a nice idea. Our time is so short, and we wouldn't get much privacy on the plane. Before we start the chit chat let me say thank you for having my back. You two being there really helped me. Chuck is the best partner, but you're my team.
Okay Z, time to fill you in. She tells the story of Ryker and the baby. "I haven't seen my mom in over six years. I feel like my daughter was taken away from me. I can never tell her who she is to me, but at least she'll be back in my life."
"Sarah why did you wait so long?"
"Z, the agency has been searching for him all these years. It took Chuck and his magic computer skills to find him. He did in less than a month, what various agencies couldn't do in years. He would have done it faster, but he's a busy man."
Gretchen reaches into her wallet, "Can I show Zondra pictures of our nephews now?" She holds out a picture of MJ and LJ giving her a hug. That's Morgan Junior, that's Little John. It's hard to believe that I'm Aunt Gretchen. If you move to Burbank, you can be Aunt Z."
Zondra laughs, "My gosh, they're gorgeous. I would never have imagined Carina Miller with kids. She never gives up does she?"
Sarah joins in the laughter, "No she doesn't. Not when it's important to her. I like that about her."
Zondra leans in and speaks in a low voice. "I know we have to go, but I do have one question that's been on my mind."
Sarah nods, "Okay, ask."
Zondra leans in and whispers, "Is he as good in the sack as he is in the gym?" Gretchen leans in to hear the answer.
Sarah laughs. Her left eyebrow goes up and with a big smile she simply says, "Better."
In unison Zondra and Gretchen both say "Damn."
Sarah still laughing, "Listen up kittens, I'm about to tell you a secret we would never have figured out on our own. Nerds make the best lovers."
Gretchen nods, "Yeah I gotta admit, Morgan was good, I wouldn't tell him that, but yeah…"
Chuck comes over to the table to find the girls laughing hard. "Ladies, I'm sorry to interrupt, but we should get going."
Gretchen looks up, "Damn it, I want a nerd."
Chuck looks shocked, "Excuse me." The ladies are still laughing as they get up. Chuck looks at the check and peels off some bills. He leaves them on the table. "What's so funny?" The ladies laugh even harder.
The drive back to the plane is short, but full of chat and laughter. Gretchen keeps looking at Chuck and saying, "Damn." Chuck looks at Sarah puzzled and shrugs. Sarah laughs even harder.
Climbing the stairway to the plane Chuck looks up to see Beckman waiting for them. Sarah is the first one through the door. Beckman wraps her arms around her and hugs her tight. Sarah is surprised. "Glad you're back safe. You know generals like a glass of wine with the ladies too."
Sarah hugs her back. "I'm sorry Diane, we thought you were busy."
Beckman releases her, "I was, but I'm free now. I wouldn't mind getting to know your old partners a little better. I can always use a good team on my roster."
Zondra is surprised at Beckman hugging Sarah. "That sounds good Diane, I'd like to get to know you better as well."
Beckman gives her a dirty look. "That's General Beckman or Ma'am to you Station Chief Rizzo."
Zondra's face blanches, "Yes Ma'am. No disrespect intended."
"UH huh, Get your ass ready for travel Rizzo. You're catching a ride back to Naples with Echo Team."
"Yes Ma'am. Ma'am permission to speak freely?"
"I know this can't be good. Fine go ahead."
Zondra throws her arms around Beckman. "Thank you for bringing me in. These people are my family. I've missed them."
Beckman acts angry. "Agent, I said speak freely. I didn't say anything about laying hands on your superior officer." She whispers into Zondra's ear. "I get it, they're my family too, thanks for having their backs." She pushes Her away hard. "Chief get your act together, have a little decorum for goodness sake. I'm a damn two-star general. I'll let it go this time. I'll chalk it up to those drinks you had. Now say your goodbyes and get the hell off my plane. Echo Team is sitting on the tarmac waiting for you."
"Yes General, I hear you loud and clear General. I'll say those goodbyes and be on my way. Please give my regards to The President and First Lady."
Beckman nods and waves her hand in a dismissing fashion. "Make it quick. Clearly these Bartowskis have been a bad influence." She walks aft into the aircraft. "Bartowskis, Fager conference room when you're done mauling each other."
Chuck is the first one to take Zondra in his arms. "I'll go first and get out of your way. Can't take the risk of getting cat scratch fever." The ladies laugh." It was good to see you again Z. You know you always have a bed and a job in Burbank."
"I do know that Chuck, it makes me feel good inside, safe. Thank you for looking after, Sarah. She needs you, as much as you need her. I'll see you at the wedding. Take care of yourself. In case you still have doubts, Gretchen is okay with what went down between you. You saved my friend, thank you."
Chuck releases her and smiles, "I was there for my friend that's all," then heads off to meet up with Beckman.
Gretchen and Sarah wrap their arms around Zondra. The three of them stand still for a couple of minutes. Zondra draws in a deep breath, "I don't want to, but I have to go."
They relax their hold and Zondra kisses them each on their cheeks. "I'm leaving this plane, but I'm not leaving you. Some weird nerd taught me that I can choose my family. I choose you and him. I'll see you at the wedding. Hopefully soon, I'll come visit in Burbank."
Standing at the hatch they wave as Zondra crosses the tarmac to the waiting military aircraft. She arrives at the plane and turns to wave before disappearing into it."
Gretchen and Sarah, arm in arm, head for the conference room as the airman closes the hatch. "You know she's right Sarah, Chuck changed us, all of us."
Sarah pulls her arm to draw her friend in tighter. "I know, It terrified me; what was happening to me. The feelings were overwhelming, scary. I have a feeling you get what I mean. Now… I couldn't go back to the way I was."
"Mmmm, I get it. I also know it would be much harder if I didn't have you to support me, guide me. It must have been rough for you, on your own."
Sarah sighs deeply, "I haven't been alone for a long time. Even when we were separated, I knew Chuck would always be there for me. It helped and hurt at the same time. Hey, that's all in the past, time to move on."
As they approach the conference room, "How bad is this going to be Sarah. I don't know Beckman very well. What are we heading into?"
Sarah laughs, "Nobody knows Beckman very well. She's the spy. Master-spies learn from her. We won't know what's up until she decides we need to know."
Sarah opens the door to the conference room and the two are immediately met with the sound of laughter. Beckman slaps the table, "I wish I could have been there to see his face."
Beckman looks to the open door and clears her throat. "Ahem, welcome ladies, I trust Chief Rizzo got off okay. Please join us." She picks up the bottle of wine sitting on the table and pours two more glasses. "Hopefully next time Rizzo can join us. Okay, time to debrief, fill me in."
Two empty bottles lie on the table, a third half empty. Beckman takes a sip. "I'm happy for you Sarah, you too Fager. So, Mr. Bartowski, You came up will all of this. Bringing Fager into the fold. Finding Ryker. The whole plan to take him down, making sure he couldn't see you coming. Reuniting Sarah with her family." She gives him a look that says, I'm not saying everything I mean. "You did all of this on your own? No Help from anyone or anything."
Chuck laughs clearly mildly inebriated. Still aware that he had to be careful. "Well, General I couldn't have done any of that without Gretchen and Sarah and the rest of the team. But, If I understand your question, no, no help."
Beckman puts her glass down. "Okay, then I take full credit for your success. I trained you; took you from total Buy More loser to Master Spy. My reward is that I will be known as Grandma Diane."
Chuck and Sarah look at each other and laugh. Sarah gets up and hugs Beckman. "Diane that decision was made a long time ago. That's not a reward, that's cause we love you."
It becomes apparent that the wine is affecting the conversation. Gretchen waves her arms in the air. "Wait a minute, wait a minute. If Sarah is my sister and Chuck is my brother and the general is grandma to your kids…" She stops to think through the alcoholic fog. "… that means you're my mom." She jumps up and hugs Beckman who's shock is apparent on her face. "Wow! My mom is a general."
"What the hell? Walker get her off me. Is your whole squad insane? Maybe I spoke too soon. I'll call your team when I need someone to hug the enemy." Chuck and Sarah are laughing insanely. "Bartowskis, you need to get her in a bed, right now. Lock her up, we need to keep the crew safe."
Chuck tries to get up but he's laughing so hard he can't. Gretchen is kissing Beckman over and over. Sarah moves over to sit on Chuck's lap. Beckman jokingly screams, "Security, security." Chuck and Sarah laugh even harder.
Having a hard time talking, because he's laughing so hard, Chuck chokes out, "Sarah, you'd better help her before Gretchen winds up in cuffs."
Sarah gets up and pulls Gretchen off of Beckman. "Come on Sis, you need some rest. Chuck and I got to nap on the ride back, she didn't. It been a long few days."
Beckman takes a sip of wine, "It's fine, make sure she's ok. Ask one of the agents to keep an eye on her, from a distance."
Sarah helps Gretchen out. "I love you Sarah, you're the best sister ever. But Mom is acting weird." Sarah is laughing as she walks Gretchen to her berth.
"Chuck, should I be worried?"
"Not at all, she's exhausted and drank a little too much, she's just blowing off some steam. Besides that, she works for me, not you; she really has been a great operator."
"Okay, point taken. You're doing quite well without the intersect, aren't you?"
"I am, I've learned a lot since we started. I guess Sarah believing in me was a lot of it. I realized that I'm not a total screw up. Shaw once said I was a cross between Jerry Lewis and James Bond. I like to think I'm more Bond with enough Lewis to make it fun. Not that I take what Shaw said too much to heart." Chuck looks across the table at Beckman. "Diane, can I ask you a question you may not like?"
"Let me guess, it's about Shaw." Chuck nods. "I wish I had a good answer. He came to me from the CIA with the highest recommendations. He had major political pull and a fantastic record. I guess he also had a charisma that made me want to believe in him. I had no idea that he was unhinged."
Beckman looks down at her hands. "Chuck I'm sorry for my involvement in all the trouble you've gone through. I'm not trying to avoid my responsibly in any of it. But I would like you to remember, Shaw, Decker, Ryker, all CIA. They weren't my people. Fulcrum and the Ring, somehow, they were able to get in deep. Not only in the lower ranks, but leadership as well. I'm glad Mary is in charge now. I know I can trust a Bartowski." She picks her head up and smiles at Chuck, "That's something you taught me. No, you're not a total screw up, you never were. Just a stranger in a strange land. I guess I've made my share of mistakes too. Trusting you, caring about you and Sarah, no mistakes there."
She leans back and puts her feet on the table. "Grandma Diane huh? I like it. Why don't you go spend some time with Sarah. Get some rest, you still have another long flight from DC. I'm certain Master Chief will want to feed you before we land." Chuck smiles, getting up he walks to the door. "And Chuck… You tell Sarah pink or green, whatever she wants is good with me."
Chuck smiles, "Thanks, I'll let her know. Maybe you could use some rest too."
Chuck enters their berth to find Sarah lying on the bed naked. He quickly closes the door. "Sarah, what if Beckman were with me?
"Baby, come here. I haven't paid proper attention to my husband for days."
"Hon, how drunk are you?"
"I want to make love with my husband so I must be drunk, really?"
Chuck lies down next to Sarah, "Baby, that's not how I meant it. I just want to be sure you're okay."
"Chuck I'm fine. I've just been so tied up in knots for so long. You know, you're my hero. You saved me again. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted. It's like I stopped worrying about the past and I can finally move forward. I want to be with you. I want to start our lives and our family. Is that so terrible?"
Chuck leans over and kisses her, "No Baby, it's wonderful."
"Good then get those clothes off and ravage me."
The couple are awakened by a knock at the door. Chuck calls out, "Yes?"
"Sir, General Beckman sent to me get you. We'll be landing in about twenty minutes. She requested you join her in the dining room."
Sarah kisses Chuck, "I am hungry Hon. We'll be there shortly, thank you. Hon, Do you have any idea what day or time it is? I've lost all track of time."
"Yeah, me too. But I'm used to it. You've been doing that to me for years."
Sarah purrs, "Good to hear. I'm sure Diane will know." They freshen up, dress and head to the dining room.
As they enter the dining room, "… what came over me. Please forgive me General. I assure you I have the utmost respect for you."
"Ms. Fager. if I have your word that you will continue to look after Sarah and Chuck, I'll forget the incident ever occurred." Gretchen nods. "Good evening, Chuck, Sarah, I trust you got some rest.
Sarah is cheerful as she steps over and kisses Beckman on the cheek, then takes a seat. "Yes, we did. I'm quite refreshed."
Gretchen looks at the smile on Sarah's face, "I'll bet you are. I was just apologizing to General Beckman for my poor behavior. Why didn't you guys stop me?"
Chuck sits down next to Sarah. "We wanted to, but we were laughing so hard we couldn't move."
Gretchen sneers, "Very funny."
Master Chief Child enters the room. "Good evening, folks, it's good to see you back safe. We'll be landing any minute now."
"Julian I'm disappointed. I was hoping to get one more taste of your fantastic cuisine."
Julian holds his hands out. "I understand Chuck. However, I'm under strict orders from the First Lady to not feed you."
Sarah looks at him quizzically. "Why would the first Lady do that? She knows we love your cooking."
The group feels a gentle bump as the jumbo plane touches down. A secret Service agent enters the room and addresses Beckman. "Ma'am, I've just received word, something is up. My orders are to keep you and your guests in here."
Beckman nods. "Understood Agent, carry on."
The four people are chatting when the door opens and The President walks in. Beckman pops tall, the others stand, "Good evening Mr. President, this is unexpected."
Frank walks in and waves Beckman down, "Relax Diane, this is a social visit."
He looks across the room at Gretchen standing stiff as a board, her eyes wide in a stare, "Who's this lovely young lady?"
Sarah gets up to hug Frank. "That's Gretchen Fager, one of our operatives and a close friend." Gretchen barely raises a hand to wave.
"I see, so you're the one who got my wife in trouble with the Secret Service."
Gretchen stammers, "No Sir, I mean Yes Sir, I mean… I didn't mean to, I didn't know, and Sarah said…"
"Relax Gretchen, if anyone could tell Joyce what to do, I wouldn't be standing here right now. I know who the boss is."
Flotus walks in, she kisses Sarah on the cheek, "That's right Honey, the people elected you, but I picked you. Hi kids, This was the only way I could get you together for a food tasting. We have to pick a menu for our … I mean your wedding. Sadly, I had to conspire with Julian to trap you all in one place. Gretchen nice to see you again Sweetie. Frank did you introduce yourself?"
"I was about to when you walked in. Hi Gretchen, I'm Mr. President."
Gretchen nods, still staring.
Joyce gives him a dirty look, "Frank!"
Frank laughs, "Blame Chuck, he's the one who taught me it's okay to have fun."
"Gretchen, this is Frank, my husband and a poor comedian. Everyone sit, we have lots of food to sample and I believe a number of cake designs to look at."
"Hello Sir, Ma'am it's nice to see you again."
Chuck snickers, "Hard to believe she spent years undercover with the cartels, isn't it?"
Gretchen stares at him, Sarah admonishes him, "Chuck!"
Joyce looks at Chuck, "Sarah do you think we'll ever get these two under control?"
Sarah laughs, "I hope not, I like him wild."
Frank waves his hands, "Sit, everyone sit. Gretchen nothing to worry about. Your record is quite impressive. You saved a lot of our countries' children during your time at the DEA. Thank you."
Gretchen nods. "Thank you for noticing Sir."
Frank nods, "Okay, where's the food, I'm starving."
Joyce presses a button and Julian steps in, "Good evening Mr. President, Madam First Lady. May I offer our first round of choices?" Joyce nods. "Thank you, Ma'am. I made a few assumptions but of course it's all up to the bride and groom. First, I'd like to offer bite-sized veggie pizzas no olives, Chinese dumplings served with Hoisin sauce, Sizzling Shrimp on toothpicks and of course mini-tamales, and burritos.
The food sampling goes on for quite some time. Chuck leans back holding his stomach, "I am stuffed, they may have been samples, but I think I ate three meals worth. Julian my taste buds are in love with you."
Julian places a book of cake designs on the table. Thank you, Chuck. I'm glad you enjoyed my food." Chuck and Sarah listen to the suggestions offered by the group then Sarah chooses a traditional three tier cake decorated with flowers.
Julian takes the book and heads into the galley. Sarah jumps up, "Oops I forgot something. Julian wait a second," she follows him into the kitchen. She returns to the dining room smiling, helping Julian carry cake samples.
The samples are all tasted, Julian waits anxiously. Chuck leans over to kiss Sarah. "My gosh Julian these are all delicious. Well Baby, which one do you want?"
Sarah smiles, "I want you to pick."
Chuck shakes his head, "Hon, I want you to be happy."
"Okay then pick, it'll make me happy if you're happy."
Chuck smiles. "I want the chocolate cake with cherry filling, with a marzipan topping."
Sarah smiles, "Yum, that sounds good. Julian can that be done with the design we decided on?"
"No problem, Sarah. Black Forrest cake with a marzipan topping. You got it."
Gretchen has remained uncharacteristically quiet throughout the tasting. She quietly offered an opinion here and there. When Chuck makes his suggestion for the cake, she gets excited. "YES! Great choice. Master Chief your cooking is rivaled only by Sarah's."
Sarah gives her a dirty look, "Gretchen, that's not cool. Julian, I don't even come close to your skills. I'm just a home cook."
Julian laughs, "Not a problem, nothing you're capable of surprises me Sarah. Mr. President will there be anything else this evening?"
Frank laughs, "We're well into the night, the evening was gone long ago Master Chief. Why don't you clean up and we'll give you a ride home. Thank you for your dedication to duty. General would you mind alerting the Secret Service and the crew that we'll be departing shortly." Beckman nods and speaks into the microphone hidden in her sleeve.
"No offense Mr. President, this has nothing to do with duty. These people saved my ass and the lives of my crew. There's nothing I won't do for them. I've already had their frozen food transferred to their plane."
Sarah gets up and hugs Julian, "Thanks Julian, you're too good to us."
Chuck takes his hand, then pulls him in for a hug. He whispers in his ear. "Maybe you should keep how we met under your chef's hat."
"Oops sorry, I'll see you soon, at the wedding. You're going to get my best cooking ever."
"Hon, Gretchen we should get going we've kept our friends long enough." She walks over to hug Joyce. "There is no way I can thank you adequately. You've both been great. Thank you for loaning us Diane and your plane."
She moves over to hug Frank. "The way I see it Sarah, it was an even swap. We got a rogue agent off the street, and Chuck's mother. You get a wedding and a ride. Seems fair to me. OH! Wait I almost forgot." He opens the door and speaks to the agent outside. He turns back in and places an attaché case on the table. He opens it and pulls out two velvet cases. "I wish I could do this in public, but I would be honored if you would let me put your medals on you now."
Chuck looks at Sarah and shrugs. Frank opens the cases and shows the medals to the room. Chuck shakes his head. "Frank this isn't…"
Frank gets very serious, "At this moment it's Mr. President. I'm officially representing the people of the United States. I ask General Beckman, Master Chief Child, and Gretchen Fager to stand in as witnesses for the American people. These medals are but a small symbol of the appreciation we feel for you.
You have both acted above and beyond what is expected of any citizen. I wish with all my heart that the nation could know what you've done for us. As a small token I am giving Ms. Fager only, clearance to hear Batman's story. There should be at least one civilian who knows how you saved them. General Beckman you will be my witness to that decision and complete the necessary paperwork when we return to the White House.
General Beckman since it was your team that accomplished this mission and Agent Walker was working for you at the time. Please, will you assist me by placing her medal around her neck?"
"Yes Mr. President, it would be my honor to be part of this ceremony."
Chuck and Sarah turn and hold each other's hand as the medals are placed around their necks.
Hugs, kisses, and tears are shared by everyone in the room. Joyce wipes a tear from Sarah's cheek, "Sweetheart, I couldn't be prouder if I had spent eighteen hours in labor, and when was the last time you saw Diane crying?"
Chuck shakes Frank's hand, "Thank you Sir. I can't begin to tell you how honored I am. Not only for this medal, but also by your friendship and trust. Thank you."
Chuck, Sarah, and Gretchen walk across the tarmac to their craft. Gretchen is still in mild shock. "Congrats Guys. That was the most amazing thing I've ever been part of and that was just the food sampling. I do have one question, "You're talking about a comic book character again. Who the hell is Batman? Why would I want to know his story, and why is it classified?"
Sarah and Chuck laugh so hard they have to stop walking. Sarah pulls Gretchen in close to whisper in her ear, and points at Chuck. "He's Batman, you'll have to wait until we're home to hear the story. We'll need a SCIF, It's highly classified, I guess The President has decided to trust you."
HM is standing by the steps as they approach the plane. "Hey Bosses, Hi Gretchen did you have a nice vacation? Some people dropped off some coolers. It's weird, it looked like they came from the President's plane."
Chuck pats him on the back. "Really, that is weird. How about you get us in the air and home before that food defrosts and gets ruined?"
Gretchen offers to keep HM company as long as he promises to let her fly some. He agrees and they head off to the cockpit. Chuck and Sarah strap in for the takeoff. Once at cruising altitude she pushes the button on the intercom. "Nice takeoff HM, Chuck and I are going to catch a nap. We would prefer not to be disturbed until it's almost time to land."
"No problem, Boss. I prefer to remain a man and I've had breakfast." Chuck and Sarah laugh.
Gretchen looks at HM puzzled, "What the hell does that mean?"
HM grimaces, "It means if I go back there, she'll take my manhood off and feed it to me."
Gretchen laughs, "Sarah said that to you?"
HM nods, "And I totally believe she meant it. That lady scares me."
Gretchen shakes her head, "Well HM, I guess you're not as dumb as you look. That lady could take you apart before you see the knife. Maybe we should just be considerate and give them some privacy."
Chuck and Sarah are cuddled up in the cabin on the pull-out bed. Sarah touches his lips with her fingers. "Baby, have a told you how grateful I am to you? I love everything about you. Your lips are the best. I love when they touch mine. When I lie like this with my ear against your chest, I can hear your heart saying over and over, I love you Sarah, I love you Sarah." She sighs, "I'm the luckiest woman on earth. Thank you for loving me, Chuck."
Chuck pulls her in tight, "You've got it all wrong Sarah, I'm the lucky one. Before you, I had nothing to live for. I was an empty shell of a man with no plans and no purpose. You've given me everything I've ever wanted. Thank you for loving me. More importantly thank you for being here so I can love you."
He takes in a deep breath. "Here's my short-term plan. When we land, we get Gretchen and the food back to the residence. We take some time to freshen up then we head out to see my mom-in-Law and daughter. There's only one problem with my plan."
Sarah kisses his chin, "What Baby? That sounds like a great plan."
Chuck shrugs, jostling Sarah's head. "I have no idea where they are. Do we have to fly to England, or France or something?"
Sarah laughs. "Baby, they live forty-five minutes from us in the valley."
"That's good, I'm a little tired of flying." He starts to speak in an accent. "Boris remember, Svetlana wanted to speak about hootchey kootchey."
"Nyet, Boris. I vish only to speak about the secrets you hold. Tell me Boris Vhat is secret about how you capture Svetlana's heart."
Chuck shrugs, "Is easy. Boris steals plans for SoRTS."
Sarah bends her neck to look up at him. "Vhat is dis SoRTS?"
Chuck pulls her up and kisses her. "Is obvious; Secrets of Russian Toe Sucking."
Sarah holds her hand against his cheek. "Yes Boris, is obvious. You are best toe sucker in Vorld." She pulls his face to look at her. "But… Svetlana also has studied this technology. I vill show you." She slides down under the covers.
Chuck groans, "You have learned vell, dangerous Russian espionage agent. I vill report to the kremlin your good Vork."
The intercom comes alive. "Hello back there, time to get up. Touch down twenty minutes. We should be in the hangar by about three A.M. Since you've had plenty of sleep, I assume I'll be getting that briefing when we get home."
Sarah snuggles into Chuck. "Hon, I think it's time for us or Gretchen to move out."
Chuck pulls her close, "Mmmm, I'll call the contractors and see how soon we can move into our house. How do you feel about letting her use the residence once we leave."
"I'm okay with her staying there temporarily, but I think it's important that she start her own life. She has a good paying job. She'll always have us and the rest of the family if she runs into trouble. Maybe it's time for the baby bird to fly off on her own. I was thinking we can let the Woodcombs use it while we're on our honeymoon. You know to house hunt and lay out plans for the clinic and foundation."
Chuck pulls her tight. "See, and you thought I married you because you're beautiful. It's your brain. Damn you have a sexy brain."
Sarah fakes a disappointed tone. "You don't think I'm beautiful?"
"BABY, that's not what I said, nor what I meant…"
Sarah rolls over on top of him and gives him a huge grin. "Now you know how Jeffrey feels when you twist his words."
Chuck presses his lips together. "Yep, I can see I'm going to have to devote more time to spanking you."
Sarah's eyes go wide. "OOOHHH, promise?"
"I can see you're not going to let me win. Maybe we should get up and get dressed."
Sarah is sarcastic, "Yes Husband, whatever you say Husband."
As they get up Chuck shakes his head, "I'm doomed, aren't I?"
Sarah stretches up to kiss him. "Yes, My Love, I believe you are."
The plane touches down and is pushed into the hangar. Gretchen walks into the Cabin. Sarah runs up to her and hugs her. "Gretchen it's so good to see you again."
Gretchen is taken by surprise, "Uh yeah, good to see you again too." Looking over Sarah's shoulder she mouths to Chuck, "What's going on?"
Chuck smiles, "Sarah, you're freaking Gretchen out. She's never seen you so happy."
Sarah laughs, "Really, well you should have been at our first wedding. I'm going to see my mom today, and Molly. I'm going to get to hug Mom and Molly." She releases Gretchen and turns to wrap her arms around Chuck. "He did it, this wonderful man made it happen. Now get your act together pussycat, time to head home."
Sarah is strangely animated for the entire drive home. The trunk is packed with the coolers, and one is sharing the back seat with Gretchen. The top on the mustang is down. The wind blowing Sarah's hair wildly. She's laughing as she shakes her head. "Gretchen, this is so good." She turns the best she can in her seat. "I can't wait for Mom to meet you and all the rest of our family. I know Molly is going to love the twins… oooooo and Clara, I know they're going to be best friends. GRETCHEN, we have a family."
She turns around and throws her hands in the air. She allows them to be limp and lets the air push them around. "Baby, is it me or does the air smell better?"
Chuck glances over and squints his eyes, showing some concern, "Sarah, the air always smell good when you're around."
Sarah turns to face him, "Gretchen, do you see? Do you see why I love him? He always says the right thing."
Gretchen throws her head back and laughs. "Sarah, I don't know what's up with you, but I like it. What do you think Batman, do you like her this way?"
Chuck turns to look at Sarah. "I like her every way, but I think we'll talk more about it at home."
Arriving back at CI they unload the three coolers and baggage into the elevator. When they arrive at the residence level the door opens, and they find Casey waiting arms crossed. "It's about time you got here, the alarm sounded fifteen minutes ago. Let me give you a hand with those. Master Chief took care of us again huh?"
Before Casey can bend to grab a cooler, Sarah jumps into this arms and kisses his cheek. Casey is rocked back and has to catch his balance. "WHAT THE HELL!
"I love you John Casey, you're the best."
"Bartowski, get this woman off me. What the hell is wrong with her?"
"Nothing John, she's just happy." He gently pries her off. "Guys, would you mind putting the food into the freezer? I need a minute with Sarah. Come on Hon, let's take our bag into the bedroom."
Sarah laughs, "My husband just can't get enough of Svetlana."
Gretchen looks at Casey as she picks up a cooler, "Who the hell is Svetlana? Is that Sarah's cover for Batman?"
Casey stands up surprised, "How the hell do you know about Batman? Has the whole world gone insane?"
Gretchen heads into the kitchen. "The President told me." Casey's face betrays his shock.
Chuck pulls Sarah into the bedroom by her hand. She giggles, "Calm down Chuck, I'm all yours. But can't this wait, it's the middle of the night and we have company?"
Chuck sits down on the bed and looks up at his wife. "Sarah talk to me. What's going on?"
Sarah sighs exasperated, "Chuck, you tell me what's going on. It's like none of you have ever seen me happy before."
Chuck frowns. "Baby, I've seen you happy. What's freaking me out is that I've never seen you scared before."
Sarah's hand goes to her throat, tears start to run down her cheeks. In a low whimper. "Oh!" Her head falls to her chest as she starts to sob.
Chuck stands up and takes her into his arms. She collapses into him. "How do you know me so well? You're the only one who sees me."
Chuck holds her tight and kisses the top of her head. "I guess that's what happens when two people share one heart. Any chance you want to tell me what's going on?"
Chuck waits patiently as Sarah holds him tight and cries. Suddenly the words burst out, "Baby, what if she's forgotten me, doesn't want me anymore? What if Molly doesn't like me? What if she can see inside me and realizes how broken I am?"
Chuck strokes his wife's hair. "Baby take a breath." Sarah breathes in deep and lets it out. "That's my girl. I hope you don't mind if I answer your questions with more questions." Chuck feels her shrug into his chest. "What if your mom missed you as much as you missed her? What if, like you, she thought of you every day and prayed for your safe return? What if every day, she showed Molly a picture of you and told her all about her big sister that was doing things to help people everywhere? What if Molly looks at you and sees the incredibly beautiful, smart, brave woman that I love? What if Molly is looking forward to having a big sister, she can have tea parties with? Do you think Molly will enjoy having Clara as a cousin close in age she can play with? What if, no matter how things turn out you're surrounded by people who love you? When we find out the answers to all these questions… I'll be standing right next to you."
She playfully slaps his chest. "Shut up. Why do you always have to be right?"
Chuck laughs. "I guess you inspire me. How about you freshen up, we go out to the dining room, and I make you a nice cup of hot chocolate. I believe you owe Gretchen a story. Make sure you leave out certain parts."
Sarah steps back and wipes the tears from her cheeks, "Hot chocolate sounds good. I know Baby, I'll be careful. I'll be out in a minute." She puts her hand on the doorknob and turns back. "I don't know how I ever got by without you. I pray I never have to do it again. Thank you for loving me Baby."
Chuck steps out into the dining room where Casey is grilling Gretchen, "… Okay he told you about Batman, but what else did he tell you?"
"Johnny how many times do I have to say it, all he said was that they can tell me Batman's story. Then all Sarah would tell me is that Chuck is Batman, whatever the hell that means."
The two turn when Chuck enters the room. He immediately sees the concern on their faces. "She's okay, I'll let her fill you in. John if we're going to have this discussion and we are, please set security. Thanks for putting the food away. I'm making hot chocolate, any takers?"
Casey gets up and presses the button to set up the SCIF. Gretchen nods, "Can I have some of those little marshmallows?"
Chuck smiles, "Sure, coming up. John?" Casey grunts. "Got it hot chocolate no marshmallows."
Sarah walks in. Gretchen catches the red eyes and weak smile. She runs over to hug her. "Did that beast make you cry? I'll make him pay. I'll hit him from behind."
Sarah laughs, "No he's the best. I guess I don't have meltdowns very often but when I do, I do it right. Sorry I was so weird. I'm a little nervous about seeing my mom again. By the way good luck sneaking up on him."
Sarah sits at the table as Chuck brings out four cups of hot chocolate. He sits down and takes Sarah's hand in his. "Don't freak out John. The President cleared Gretchen to hear Batman's story." Casey looks shocked he opens his mouth to argue. "Relax Casey, Sarah's got it."
Sarah begins to tell the tale of how Chuck saved Europe. She wasn't involved in the part where Chuck flew the F-18. The story begins with her being sent out to the Ford. She leaves out all references to The intersect and Chuck doing "special" things, as she relates the tale of A Heart Torn Chapters one through eight. She even fills Gretchen in on how she and Chuck worked through their issues and the wedding.
The tale done Gretchen sits back, "Holy shit. You guys saved Europe and maybe the world from a nuclear holocaust. No wonder you got medals." Sarah and Casey smile wide.
Chuck shakes his head, "SHHHH!"
Gretchen sees the smiles and looks at Chuck, "What, what aren't you telling me?"
Sarah looks at Casey, he shrugs. Sarah takes her hand in hers. "You can't ask questions…"
Chuck interrupts. "Sarah, don't."
Casey scowls, "Shut up nerd. It was the third time he averted nuclear war. Our boy's a hero alright. There aren't enough medals."
Gretchen stares at Chuck as he shrinks back into his chair and puts his cup in front of his face. She turns her gaze towards Sarah. "I want a nerd of my own."
Sarah laughs, "Sorry sister, he's one of a kind and all mine." Chuck shrinks further into his chair and groans.
Casey stands, "Listen up Red. This conversation is never to be repeated, none of it. Even Rizzo doesn't have the whole story, and she was there. Now, I'm gonna get some sleep. While you guys were having a fun vacation I've been sitting here dealing with Grimes, I'm exhausted. By the way Boss, Alex did a bang-up job running the company, thanks for trusting her. She worked hard to make you proud. It was Good to have Mae, nice to know we can get rid of you now." He heads to the door.
Gretchen looks at Casey with a puzzled look, "What conversation?" Casey nods and smiles.
Chuck wants a shot at payback. "Hey Casey, You forgot to tell her; when I was Batman, you were Robin the Boy Wonder."
Gretchen and Sarah start to laugh.
Casey turns and growls, "Well played Nerd. I should have put you down when I had the shot."
Sarah stops laughing and gets very serious. "Casey, what do you think I would have done if you had followed that order?"
"Hmmm, point taken Walker. I was joking, but had I followed that order there be a hell of a lot of dead people all over the world. Good night, or whatever time it is." Casey pulls at the door, but it won't open.
Sarah gets up and pushes the button to release the SCIF protocols. The shutters open to let the morning sun in. "Good morning, John. We'll see you in a few hours. Get some rest. And John…" He stops and turns. "… thanks for having our backs. You're still Overwatch number one." Casey grunts as he exits the residence.
Gretchen gets up. "Well guys, while you were "napping" in the cabin, I was flying the plane. By the way, HM is very weird. I'm going to grab some sleep too. I do have one question. Who the hell is Svetlana?"
Chuck laughs and gets up to hug her. "She's my lover on the side. She's a very dangerous Russian espionage agent."
Gretchen screws up her face in disbelief and looks at Sarah. Sarah puts her hands out in surrender, "What can I say he's insatiable. I can't keep up with him."
Gretchen stares at her, "Are you shittin' me?"
Chuck walks over and wraps his arms around Sarah. "Nyet, she speaks the truth. Svetlana has used her sexy vays to get many secrets from Boris."
Sarah responds in her Russian accent. "Da, Boris you are veak and Svetlana vill get many more secrets from you."
Gretchen shakes her head. "You people are nuts; I'm going to sleep."
"Gretchen, thanks for backing us up. Chuck and I are going to be heading out. We'll be back later this afternoon."
As Gretchen walks towards her bedroom Chuck calls after her, "Da, run avay red headed American agent. Ve Vill find you. Ve know vhere you lif. You cannot escape dangerous Russian espionage agents Boris and Svetlana."
Over her shoulder she calls back. "You're both nuts, instead of medals they should have given you rubber rooms." She closes the door behind her. Chuck and Sarah hug each other and laugh.
"Baby, you up for a ride?"
Chuck smiles, "Any place special?"
"I was thinking it might be fun to fight rush hour traffic into the valley."
Chuck laughs as they walk to the door. "I hear the 101 is a great place to park and make out at this hour."
Sarah laughs with him, "That does sound like fun, mind if I drive."
"Well, it could be more fun if I drive since I have no idea where we're going, but sure, I'll let you drive."
They enter the elevator and Sarah attacks Chuck, kissing him hard. "I love you, Chuck. Thank you for loving me." The elevator door opens into the garage. She draws in a deep breath. "Time to meet your Mother-in-Law."
As they Walk to the Mustang, "What's the rush I'm looking forward to our two hour make out session on the freeway." He helps her into the car then walks around and climbs into the passenger seat.
"Hon you ever wonder why they call it the freeway? When no matter what time you drive on it you can't move."
Sarah laughs as she makes sure he's buckled in and backs the car up. "Do you really expect me to believe that you're not nervous?"
Why would I be nervous? Your mom and Molly will love me, I'm fantastic."
Sarah smiles, "Yes you are."
"I just hope she's nicer than Endora, I don't think I'd enjoy being turned into a chimp."
Sarah looks at him like he's crazy. "Who's Endora?
Chuck shrugs and laughs. The rest of the ride is filled with light conversation as Chuck explains how he spent most of his childhood being babysat by the TV. They laugh together as they enjoy the nice weather and being stuck on a crowded freeway.
Sarah pulls in front of a house in Encino. Chuck looks at it. "Hon is that your mom's house?" Sarah nods. "Um, do you see anything familiar about it?"
Sarah looks at him puzzled, "Of course I do, I've been here before."
Chuck takes her hand, "I was noticing the white picket fence and red door."
Sarah shakes her head, "Crap, it never occurred to me."
Suddenly the front door opens, and a blonde woman runs up the walk screaming. "REBECCA! REBECCA! Is that you? OH MY GOD it is you." She runs around the car and reaches in to grab Sarah. "My baby is home." She kisses Sarah over and over. "My Becky is home. I've missed you so much. Thank God you're safe." Sarah is in tears as she hugs her mother back.
Chuck is smiling wide, tears running down his cheeks. "Rebecca huh?"
"Mom if you let me out of the car, I could give you a proper hug."
Emma releases Sarah who turns toward Chuck, "Are you upset? You didn't want to know."
Chuck smiles, "I'm fine, Sarah. Get out of this car and hug your mother who doesn't seem to remember you."
"She leans over and kisses Chuck. Don't you ever get tired of being right?" Before he can answer Sarah climbs out of the car and takes her mother in a tight embrace.
Emma holds her tight. "Becky, who's that man, and why did he call you Sarah? Is that your cover name?" She lowers her voice. "Are you still working for … you know who?" She stares at Chuck. "How dare you think I would forget my daughter." Rebecca Lisa Cole, who is that rude man?"
Sarah releases her. "Mom there are somethings I have to explain." She takes a deep breath. "Mom, this is Charles Bartowski, Chuck, my husband, your son-in-law. He's not rude, he's teasing me."
Emma stares at Chuck then back at Sarah, "You're married? My baby girl is married?" She grabs Sarah again. "Well, Chuck get over here. I can't very well hug my son-in-law from there."
Chuck climbs over the seat and jumps down to the street. Emma let's go of Sarah and hugs him. "I don't know you, Chuck. However, I'm sure if my daughter chose you, you're a good man."
Chuck hugs her back, "It was in a weak moment, she felt sorry for me."
Sarah laughs, "Chuck stop it. Mom this is the best man you'll ever meet. I know he's the best man I've ever met. I wish I could tell you everything he's done for me, sacrificed for me."
"Well standing here in the middle of the street is great for the neighbors gossip-vine, but no way to treat family."
Sarah gasps her hand goes to her throat. "Mom, I'm not sure I'm ready to meet Molly."
Emma takes her hand, "Come on, she's in school, first grade now. I know she's dying to meet her big sister. We say our prayers for you every night and I tell her stories about how much I know you miss her, but you have important work." She pulls Sarah towards the house, Chuck follows. "So, tell me am I a grandmother?" Sarah laughs. She stops and pulls her mother into a hug. "No not yet, but we're hoping soon, after the wedding. Mom, I've missed you so much."
Emma pulls away, "Okay, now you're confusing me. You just told me Chuck is your husband."
Chuck steps up, "Let's go inside we'll explain everything. Can I call you Mom?"
Emma looks at him and laughs, "Oh, this is going to be a good story. Let's give it a couple of minutes. My mind is still whirling. I can't believe I got my daughter back, I'm not even sure what to call her. Now I have a son. Becky is he potty trained? Let's start with Emma and work our way towards Mom." The three of them are laughing as they enter the house and close the door.
When they enter the house Sarah looks around. This is a house she never lived in. It's another reminder that she never had a home, until Chuck.
Chuck takes a look at his wife and immediately knows what's going on in her mind. He puts his arm around her and kisses her cheek. He softly whispers, "It's time to move forward, the only thing important about the past is that it brought me to the woman I love."
Sarah leans her head back on his shoulder and holds his face to hers. She nods. "Mom your house is lovely. I'd forgotten what it looks like." Sarah strolls around looking at the books on the shelves. She comes to a group of pictures. There's many of a little blonde girl. That must be Molly, she's beautiful. There's also a few of a young woman with blond hair. She turns and looks at Chuck, "Mom, there's something I need to warn you about."
"Emma is busy putting out coffee cups and cookies. "Really Honey, what's that?"
"You need to know that Chuck is always right. His instincts are fantastic. Doubting him is a waste of time. I'm guessing this is Molly, she's gorgeous. Is she a good girl? Does she do normal little girl things?"
Emma looks at Chuck, "Well Chuck, that's quite the testimonial from my daughter." Chuck shrugs." Yes Sweetheart, that's Molly. She is a good girl. You gave me a very special gift when you brought her into my life. She's smart as a whip, and she loves to play with her friends. I kept my promise to you she's a little girl with a normal life. You'll meet her soon. Now Chuck tell me about yourself, and why do you call Becky, Sarah?" She pours coffee as the two join her at the table.
Chuck looks at Sarah, she nods. "Until today it's the only name I've ever had for her. When I met her, she was Sarah Walker. Please understand there was no intent to cause you harm. When we met, she could only tell me her cover name. I was drawn into her previous line of work as an analyst of sorts. I work in computers.
As time went on and we grew closer, she was always Sarah to me. She decided that she wanted to always be my Sarah. Seems that she was happy to leave aspects of her life behind and start anew. When I met her father, I got a better understanding of that. I should also mention that I didn't know about you, until after we were married. She guarded your, and Molly's, existence with her life."
Emma looks at Sarah, "Chuck met your father? Should I ask how that went?"
Sarah takes a deep breath. "He loved Chuck. Gave us his blessing. That's a longish story. Dad had gotten into some trouble, doing what Dad does. We helped him, saved his life. He's in prison again. I've decided that I would rather not have his influence in my life. When we have children, I don't want him teaching them like he taught me."
Chuck holds her hand. "Baby, it was what he taught you that eventually brought us together. He wasn't all bad. He did offer to pay for our wedding."
Sarah puts on a sad smile, "Hon, why don't we talk about happier things."
Emma can see that the topic was troubling for her daughter. "Hon, tell me about this wedding that's happening for my married Daughter. You might also help me find a way to explain to Molly how her big sister Rebecca is now her big sister Sarah."
Sarah takes Emma's hand, "Mom. that is a very long story. It's connected to the story that Chuck brought up." She sighs. "Chuck and I were living together, we were engaged. I got sick, that delayed the wedding." Sarah looks at Chuck. "Chuck took care of me, nursed me, he actually saved my life. Then I did something awful." She starts to cry.
Chuck takes her hand, "Hon, please stop. That's all in the past."
Sarah shakes her head. "Chuck let me finish. "Mom, I left him. Walked away from the best thing that ever happened to me. I was so scared, so stupid. I couldn't imagine why a man as good as Chuck would want me. I broke his heart. Tore it in half. For two years I was miserable, I couldn't find the courage to call him. Beg for his forgiveness. Then fate intervened. We were thrown together for an assignment.
I begged for him to take me back. This man, this wonderful forgiving man took me back. He wanted to get married right away. He said he didn't want to wait one more minute to have me as his wife. I wanted to wait until you could be there.
Of course, we had to clear up that little problem that had been hanging over our head for all those years. Chuck figured out how to do that as well. We'll never be bothered by that jerk again.
We compromised. We got married right away, with the agreement that once I could have you in my life, we would have a family wedding. That time is here."
Chuck smiles, "Hon, you're forgetting a little detail."
Sarah looks at him puzzled. Her face brightens and a big smile covers her face. "Oh! I forgot to mention, we're getting married at the White House, by the President. Would you walk me down the aisle?"
Emma sits back in her chair, her mouth open, "Excuse me, I think I misheard you. Were you saying you're getting married in a white house and you want me to be present? Sweetheart, I've missed so much of your life. Of course, Molly and I will be there, and I would love to walk you down the aisle."
Chuck and Sarah laugh hard. Emma starts to cry. "Emma it's okay we weren't laughing at you."
Emma shakes her head as she dabs her eyes, "No, you're misunderstanding. Chuck, I haven't heard my daughter laugh like that since she was a tiny little girl. Oh God! It makes me so happy. Did you do this Chuck? Did you teach my daughter how to laugh again?" Sarah nods. "Well, that settles it, you'd better call me Mom." Her tears start to flow freely. "You gave me my sweet, beautiful baby girl back. I can never thank you enough."
Sarah smiles, "I told you he was wonderful. Mom are you okay with the name change. I would never want to disrespect you."
Emma smiles she stands and hugs Chuck from behind. "It's okay, I get it. You're not the sad, frightened Becky who left here, You're Sarah now." She walks around and hugs Sarah. "Now tell me about this wedding again."
"I'm Sarah Lisa Bartowski. Mom, a friend of mine is helping me plan the wedding. Maybe she could explain better. Would you mind talking to her?"
"Be… Sarah, that's going to take some getting used to."
Chuck laughs, "It seems to be an ongoing issue for our previous profession. You may hear people call me Charles Carmichael at some point."
Emma smiles and pats his hand as she retakes her seat, "Of course, I understand. Sweetheart I'm sorry I couldn't help you plan. I'm glad you had someone to be there for you. I would love to meet a friend of yours."
Sarah smiles and pulls out her cellphone. "Mom, I have a lot of people helping me. Chuck helped me find a whole new family while I waited for us to be together again." She presses speed dial.
The phone rings. "A formal voice answers, White House, First Lady's office. How may I direct your call?"
Emma's face goes white, and her mouth moves but nothing is coming out. "This is Sarah Bartowski, is FLOTUS available to take a call?"
"Please hold Ma'am, I was told to notify her anytime you call."
Emma is pointing at the phone giving Chuck a pleading look. He simply nods. Emma grabs her throat and Chuck laughs quietly.
"Sarah, hi Sweetie, how's my favorite daughter?" Emma's eyes go wide.
"Hi Joyce, you just freaked my mother out."
"Well, I can see where I might have. Sarah you never mentioned your mother. Ma'am I'm sorry I didn't mean to steal your daughter. But I'll warn you, I want to."
Sarah laughs, "Sorry Joyce I didn't mean to sneak up on you with this. Until this last mission, her existence was top secret. Would you mind talking to General Beckman, she can tell you the whole story. In the meantime, Mom… Emma, this is the First Lady, my dear friend Joyce."
FLOTUS is exuberant, "Emma you have the most wonderful daughter, and you couldn't do better for a son-in-law. Could you wait a minute please. They hear a voice. "Yes Ma'am." Please put me through to General Beckman. Diane, Joyce. Are you free? Good get your ass to my office ASAP, I want to know the full story on Sarah's mom. Good, I'm on the phone with them now hurry, I'm dying from curiosity. Okay, I'm back."
Emma is breathing hard, "um, Madam First Lady, I'm at a loss for words. So much is coming at me so fast. You know my daughter and Chuck? I don't understand."
Joyce laughs, "I get it. Those two have a way of making surprises happen. I'll give you the quick read. They did a big favor for my husband. He wanted to meet them to say thank you. When we met them, our lives were changed. We adopted them. They told us the story of how they got married in a hurry and wanted to have a wedding that you, and the rest of their family could be at. Frank, The President, was so moved by their story he insisted we be allowed to pay for their family wedding at our home. By the way my name is Joyce."
"At your home? The White House?"
"Yes Emma, that's correct." They hear a door open, "Oh here's Sarah's second adoptive mother, General Beckman."
"Hello, who am I talking to?"
"Hi Diane. It's Chuck, and Sarah and Sarah's mom, Emma. Emma this is Major General Diane Beckman, the President's Special Advisor, and our old Boss."
"Watch it Bartowski, Who're you calling old. Hello Emma. Please, call me Diane. I think you should know your daughter is wonderful, the finest woman I know. Your Son-in-law isn't bad either. He's been a pain in my butt for years, but he's okay. My recommendation would be to keep him."
Emma is fanning herself, "Oh my, this is too much."
"Thanks Diane, I love you too. Emma is a little thrown."
"Would this be a bad time to mention those two have received the highest honors, medals, this country has to offer?"
Emma gasps, "My baby. A hero. Thank you General, thank you for telling me."
Chuck leaves the room to wander around and look at pictures while the women chat and talk wedding. He walks down a small hallway; the walls are covered with pictures. There's pictures of two babies. The time frames are obvious based on Emma's age in the picture. He gets to see Sarah as a baby for the first time. There is a picture of her as a little girl, her blonde hair in pigtails. He touches the picture; his face has a sweet smile. We're going to have the most beautiful children. He follows the pictures, clearly lined up in a timeline. The pictures of Sarah stop when she's a young girl, then pick up again showing her as an adult. Hmmm, I'm going to have to ask my wife about this time jump.
He moves to the other wall. The older Emma tells him this is Molly. It's amazing, she really resembles Sarah as a little girl. More and more I believe things happen the way they're supposed to. He walks back into the dining room where Emma and Sarah are sitting side by side holding hands and laughing with Joyce and Diane. Sarah looks up and smiles at him. His face flushes, he feels loved and appreciated. He throws her a kiss. Sarah smiles wider and throws one back.
Joyce's voice breaks through the laughter. "This has been fun, but The President has been yelling for Diane for five minutes now. We need to go. I don't understand why these men think national security is more important than a wedding. Clearly their priorities are all messed up.
Emma it was lovely to meet you. I look forward to meeting in person at the wedding. Sarah, please give my private number to your mother, in case she has any questions. We'll need to coordinate our wardrobes. Thank you for sharing Sarah with us. We'll talk soon. Give Chuck a kiss for me. Bye."
Emma sits back still holding Sarah's hand tightly. "Baby, I couldn't be prouder. There's no way I could have imagined the life you would have. I'm so sorry I wasn't able to be there for you growing up. Obviously, you did fine without me."
"Mom, that doesn't mean I didn't miss you every day. You gave me the foundation I needed to accomplish what I did."
Chuck can see where Sarah gets the need to question herself. He decides to change the subject. "Emma, Mom, have you caught your breath yet. You still have to say hi to my Mom."
"Oh dear, I don't know. Let me guess she's the Prime Minister of England."
Chuck laughs, "No, she's just the Director of Central Intelligence."
Emma gives him a dirty look, "Very funny."
Sarah takes Emma's hand. "Mom…" She nods.
Emma's face shows her disbelief. "Why do I keep hearing the music from the Twilight Zone? Is this for real? My grandchildren are going to be Superboy and Supergirl."
Sarah shakes her head, "No. More likely Batboy and Batgirl."
Chuck laughs. Emma sighs, "Okay what exactly does that mean?"
Chuck laughs as he pulls out his phone and presses the speed dial marked Mimi. "Nothing, Sarah's just joking."
The phone rings. "Hi Chuck, is everything okay?"
"Yeah Mom, everybody's fine."
"Is Sarah with you?"
"She's right here, you're on speaker."
"I just wanted to thank you both for handling that problem for me. Station Chief Rizzo checked in with my office, good job."
"Hi Mary. Dealing with that problem was good for me too. I thought you might like to say hi to my Mother. Emma this is Chuck's Mom, Mary."
"Okay, no more shop talk. Hello Emma. At the risk of embarrassing you, you have a wonderful daughter. My son couldn't have found a better wife."
"Hello Mary seems we both lucked out. Your son is a very nice man. I know my daughter respects him a great deal and is very much in love with him." Sarah smiles.
"I'm sorry I can't talk long. I would love to spend some time together at the wedding."
Emma nods, "It's a date. In the meantime, I'm going to get to know my new son-in-law. I guess they still work for you."
"Mary laughs, "I wish. They have their own company. I got this job when they turned it down. Okay, Tell the President I'm on my way. Sorry folks, gotta go. Love you all. Chuck, you behave take care of my daughter-in-law. Bye." The call ends.
Emma looks at them. "You have your own company, Mom, and Pop kind of thing? What do you do?"
Sarah looks at Chuck. "Mom while I was gone, Chuck built a multi-million-dollar, international security company." She shrugs, "He said without me he was bored and needed to fill the time."
Emma shakes her head, "So, let me get this straight. My new son-in-law is a millionaire hero, who's friends with the President, and he makes my daughter deliriously happy. I'm going to guess he's a good lover too." Chuck's face goes red. Sarah smiles and nods. "Is he any good with kids?"
Sarah smiles and strokes Chuck's cheek, "They love him, almost as much as I do."
"That's good, because the bus will be dropping Molly off any minute."
Sarah gasps, Chuck looks at her, "Baby, take a breath. She's going to love you."
Emma gets up and hugs Sarah, "Sweetheart, how could she not love you? I tell her about her big sister all the time. How much you love and miss her. Come let's go meet the bus, you'll see."
Sarah gets up shakily, "How will we explain where I was, my new name? Mom, maybe this is a bad idea? Do you have a back door?"
As Sarah looks for a way out, the front door opens. "Mommy, how come you didn't meet the bus? Are you okay?" She steps in the room and stares at Sarah. She walks over and hides behind Emma's leg. She peeks out again and takes a good look at Sarah. She yanks Emma's shirt to pull her down. Emma bends and she whispers something in her mother's ear.
Emma stands up, "Yes Sweetheart, that's your big sister." Molly pulls her down again to whisper in her ear. Emma stands up, "Actually Molly, she changed her name. She calls herself Sarah now. If you want to give her a hug you have to ask her, not me?"
Sarah stands frozen, her arms aching to pick Molly up. Chuck sits at the table watching the woman he loves in pain. He wants to rescue her but knows he can't, he shouldn't. That awareness doesn't stop his tears from flowing.
Molly peeks out from behind Emma. She looks Sarah in the eyes. "Are you scared; you look scared." Sarah nods. "How come?"
Sarah drops to her knees. "I'm afraid you won't remember me. I've been wanting to hug you for such a long time. I'm afraid you won't want me to."
Molly steps out in front of Emma, "Don't be sad, I want to hug you too. Mommy told me all about you. She told me you love me, and you were sorry you couldn't come visit."
Sarah opens her arms and Molly rushes over to fall into her embrace. A wave of relief washes through Sarah. She weeps openly and begins to sob. She holds Molly tight and kisses the top of her head. Chuck is doing his share of crying as well. He wipes the tears from his face. Emma looks at him and smiles. I'm glad she found a good man.
Sarah leans her head down to speak in Molly's ear. "Would you like to meet someone super special?" Molly nods her head against Sarah's breast. That man over there. His name is Chuck. He's my husband, your brother-in-law.
Molly looks up without letting go. "You mean I got a sister and a brother?"
Sarah smiles, "Yep, and you should know he's lots of fun. He makes me laugh all the time. Would you like to say hello?"
Molly nods and releases Sarah, she slowly walks over to Chuck and places her hands on his knees. "Hello, I'm Molly. I'm your sister." Sarah stands up and is taken into a hug by Emma. They both watch as Molly talks to Chuck.
Chuck chokes up and has to clear his throat before he can talk. "Hello Molly, I've looked forward to meeting you for a long time. Your sister told me how beautiful you are, but you're much prettier that I thought you would be. Is it weird that Rebecca changed her name to Sarah?"
Molly shrugs, "It's a little weird, How come she did that? Can I sit on your lap? It would be much easier to talk."
Chuck picks her up and hugs her. "I'm sorry, I should have asked if I can hug you."
Molly smiles, "It's okay, you're a good hugger. So, how come she changed her name?
Emma whispers to Sarah, "I've never seen her take to someone like that."
Sarah laughs softly. "He does that to all the ladies; she didn't stand a chance."
Chuck looks at her, "Do you want the real story, or the magical story?"
Molly bounces on his knees, "OH! The magical story, please."
"Okay, Magical it is. Once upon a time a beautiful Princess named Rebecca Lisa Cole went into a shop to get her magic talking machine fixed, nowadays we call it a phone."
Molly bounces again, "That's my sister's name."
Sarah looks at Emma. Emma returns the look and smiles.
"Wow! What a coincidence. Anyways, The Princess walked up to the man at the repair counter. He was just a guy, nothing special about him at all. That is until he picked his eyes up and looked at the Princess. He saw her golden hair and lovely face. When she spoke, she sounded like an angel. Suddenly he was a man in love.
Now, he had no idea who she was. All he knew was that she was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in his whole life. She was so stunning that she took the breath right out of him. He could barely talk. Kinda, like how I felt when I saw you."
Molly smiles, "She was really beautiful, was she magical?"
Chuck nods, "She was. With one look she changed his whole life. He had to ask for her name. He needed to know who she was. Well, the princess didn't want people to know who she was. Because, well you know how people can be when they find out someone is a princess. So, she told him that her Name was Sarah Lisa Walker.
That repairman fell in love with the princess on the spot. But princesses aren't allowed to be in love with repairmen. She spent time with him, but she kept telling him that they just couldn't be together. He worked very hard to prove that he deserved her love. Quite some time passed, They had many adventures together. One day the princess finally accepted that she loved the repairman. She wanted to tell him her real name. The man shook his head, 'I fell in love with Sarah Lisa Walker,' he said. 'That's who you will always be to me.'
She touched his cheek, 'I'm sorry I lied to you. But sometimes princesses have to do that.' The man nodded, 'I understand,' he said. 'Perhaps I have a solution. How would you feel about the name Sarah Lisa Bartowski?' She looked at him, shocked. 'Are you asking me to be your wife?' The repairman nodded, 'I am.' He said.
The beautiful princess took him in his arms and kissed him. 'I would like that,' she said.
No sooner had the words left her mouth when there was a shimmering in the air and a gorgeous rainbow appeared. From out of the rainbow trotted a stunning jet-black Mustang horse. The Princess and the repairman climbed on the Mustang and as they rode away, she said to him, 'We can't get married until you've met my little sister. I haven't seen her in a long time, and I miss her.' The repairman directed the horse to a kingdom called Encino where he met the princesses' little sister. He waited, scared to find out if she would like him. The end.
Emma and Sarah are in tears, "Baby, you found a good one."
Sarah shakes her head as she holds her mother. "I found the best one."
Molly throws her arms around Chuck's neck and hugs him. "That was such a good story. I think the princesses' little sister liked the repairman very much."
Chuck hugs her. "I'm glad to hear that. I forgot to tell you the part of the story where the man tells the Princesses' sister, by the way her name is Molly, that she has two little boy cousins who love to play and a girl cousin who is 2 years younger and she loves to have tea parties. She has a special magical unicorn teapot."
Molly turns excited, "Mommy, did you hear that, Molly… I mean, I have cousins." She turns back to Chuck. "You forgot to tell me the repairman's name. Was it Chuck?"
He smiles, "Yes it was."
Molly hugs him tightly, "I never had a brother before. I think I like it."
"Well, I have a big sister, her name is Ellie. She's your Cousin Clara's mom. But I've never had a little sister before. Will you teach me how to be a good big brother?"
Sarah walks over and kneels next to them. "I'm going to need some help being a big sister too. I'm a little rusty."
Molly nods, "I'll try."
Emma joins the group, "I've never had a son before, I guess we all have a lot to learn."
They all nod. Chuck puts his arm around Sarah. "Anyone want to take a ride in the magic black Mustang. We can go meet more of our family and eat pizza made special for your sister by the President's chef. I have a feeling somebody wants to show off her little sister. Mom, do you have a booster seat we can use in our car?"
"We do, where are we going?"
Sarah stands up, "Burbank, it's where we live. We have a penthouse apartment in our company headquarters. We're staying there while our new house is being renovated. Come on I can't wait for everyone to meet you both. There is a little something I need to prepare you for. Chuck, would you help me out here. Molly, may I pick you up?"
Molly nods and Sarah scoops her up. "Chuck, time for a Molly sandwich, with extra raspberry." Chuck comes up behind Molly and wraps his arms around Sarah. He squeezes and Molly starts to giggle, suddenly it turns into a full-on laugh when Chuck plants a raspberry on her neck.
Emma's hand goes to her throat a smile on her face when Molly giggles. When Molly starts to laugh, she can't help but join in. She wraps her arms around Sarah and Chuck leaning in to kiss Molly. Chuck yells out "Group hug." Molly laughs harder.
Sarah pulls back, Molly in her arms, "Nope she's all mine, I'm not sharing." Molly laughs.
Chuck whines, "But I want some." Molly reaches back towards Chuck. Sarah pulls her back.
Molly admonishes Sarah, "Didn't Mommy teach you to share when you were little?"
Sarah puts on a shamed look. "She did, you're absolutely right, I should share." She moves towards Chuck and then quickly turns towards the door. "I should, but I'm not gonna." She runs out the door, Molly screaming with laughter.
Emma steps in front of Chuck, "I don't know how you did it, but thank you. I'm watching my daughter have fun for the first time in years, decades." She wraps her arms around him. "Thank you."
"I wish I could take credit. You'll see, you're going to meet MJ and LJ. They're the ones that you'll want to thank. Our nephews are magical." As they walk out to the car. "By the way, would you like to be Grandma Emma to them?"
"Don't they have a grandma?"
Chuck puts his arm around Emma, "They do. But our philosophy is the kids can never have too many grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, or cousins."
Sarah yells from the car. "Chuck, you'll have to drive. I'm sitting in back with Molly. I have to tell her all about her new family."
Chuck calls ahead and when they arrive at the residence everyone is waiting. Morgan, Alex, Casey, Gretchen, the twins even Mrs. Sawyer and Maggie were there. When Emma and Molly walk in, they're met with loud cheers and applause. MJ and LJ run up and hug Molly. MJ is the first to speak. "Hi Cousin Molly, I'm MJ, this is LJ, we're your cousins. Do you want to play?"
LJ looks at MJ, "No! Cousin Molly want to play with me."
Molly kneels down, "I want to play with both of you."
Alex steps in to rescue Molly. "Boys let's give Molly time to say hello to everyone. Hi Molly, I'm your Aunt Alex. These troublemakers belong to me. This is my husband Your Uncle Morgan."
Alex grabs LJ, Morgan grabs MJ. "Hi Molly, Sorry for the twin attack. I'll bet you remind them of your cousin Clara, they love to play with her. It's nice to meet you. Morgan sees that Emma is in shock. "Oops sorry I'm Morgan, this is Alex my wife, MJ, and LJ Grimes. Chuck and I have been best friends since we were Molly's age. I know we can be a little overwhelming. Come say hi to the rest of your family."
Sarah sees that Emma is unsure of what to do. "Grimes, this is my Mom, Emma."
It's okay Mom, you're in good hands here. Molly will know nothing but kindness and love from these people. When we have some time alone, I'll tell you who everyone is. For now, come say hi."
Chuck is in discussion with Maggie and Mrs. Sawyer on the other side of the room. Morgan leads The group to Casey who's sitting at the table chewing on a cigar. "Emma this is John Casey, our Dad and the boys Grandpa."
LJ points at Casey and yells "Grandpa."
MJ yells back, "My Grandpa."
Alex admonishes them. "Boys do you want Molly to think that you don't know how to share that you're not nice boys?"
The twins shake their heads and in unison say, "No Mommy."
"There's my good boys, will you share Grandpa with Molly?"
Again, in unison "Yes Mommy."
"Molly, this is your Grandpa John." Casey grunts. Molly steps back.
Sarah laughs. "Molly don't be scared that means; you're very pretty. It's nice to meet you."
Molly looks surprised, she looks at Casey, "For real?" Casey nods.
Molly shrugs, "It's nice to meet you also Grandpa John." She pulls at Sarah to bend down and softly asks, "Can he speak words?"
Sarah laughs. "Yes, he can. John say hello."
Casey leans forward and the boys run to climb on his lap. "Hello Molly, it's nice to meet you. Would you like a cigar?" Molly and Emma look shocked and the group laughs.
"It's okay Mom, he's just teasing. He would never share his cigars."
Casey grunts, nods, and smiles as he hugs his grandsons. Gretchen steps up, "She's telling the truth Molly, he'll share anything else though, especially those wonderful bear hugs he gives. Hello Emma, Molly, I'm Aunt Gretchen. Your sister and I have been close friends for many years. May I give you a hug?"
Molly looks at Emma who nods. She reaches her arms out, "Okay."
Gretchen scoops her up and hugs her tight. Molly hugs her back. "Wow, Molly you give good hugs too. Thank you. Can I get you something. We have hot chocolate, cookies, juice boxes…"
"No thank you, my big brother said we're going to have pizza that the President made."
Sarah smiles, "Not quite Molly, he said the President's chef made it. However, it's still the most delicious veggie pizza I've ever eaten."
Gretchen puts Molly down. "Yum, I love veggie pizza. Would it be okay if I take the olives off? I don't like olives."
Sarah's hand goes to her neck. "You know what Molly, there are no olives. I don't like them either. I guess that proves we're sisters." Molly smiles and nods. Okay, a couple more people to meet then you can go play, if you want."
"Okay, I really want to play with the twins, they're so cute."
Sarah takes her hand, "Just a couple more people then you're on your own until the pizza is ready." She walks over to Chuck. "Mom, this is Mrs. Sawyer, Chuck's work mom."
Mrs. Sawyer extends her hand. "I prefer to think of myself as the company traffic cop, who may have to spank the boss every now and again. My name is Beatrice, but my friends call me Bea. I would call you Mom, but nobody would believe that a woman as young and beautiful as you is my mother."
Emma laughs. "My friends call me Emma. This Sarah's sister Molly."
Mrs. Sawyer offers her hand, "Aren't you the beautiful young lady. I can see that beauty runs in your family."
Molly shakes her hand, "Thank you Mrs. Sawyer."
"Mrs. Sawyer, that a little too formal for me. Would you be okay with Grandma Bea?"
Molly smiles, "Yes Ma'am. I like that, Grandma Bea. Yesterday I didn't have a grandma, a grandpa, aunts, or uncles, or even cousins. Now I have lots. This have been a wonderful day. I even got my sister back and a super nice brother."
Chuck looks at her, "You got a nice brother, will I get to meet him?"
Molly laughs and wraps her arms around his legs. "I mean you silly."
Chuck acts surprised, "Oh me, well thank you. One more person for you to meet. This is Maggie. She's going to teach you all about computers. She's a very smart woman. Personally, I'm not sure if she's an aunt or a cousin. I'll let the two of you work that out, while I go in the kitchen and put the pizza in the oven."
Sarah puts her arm around his waist, "I'll give you a hand." As soon as they're in the kitchen alone she pulls him in for a long kiss. "Do you ever get tired of me telling you how wonderful you are and how in love I am with you?"
Chuck kisses her back, "Yeah it's getting old, I'm going to give you another seventy-five years to cut it out."
Chuck pulls the pizzas out of the freezer, "It's a good thing Julian stocked us up."
Sarah unwraps the pizzas and puts a couple in the oven. When she bends over Chuck caresses her behind. She stands up shocked, "Getting a little handsy there Original Bartowski?"
Chuck acts innocent, "Just watching your six New Bartowski."
"Uh huh, that didn't feel like your eyes back there." She takes him in her arms. "you're lucky we have company, or I would take you in the bedroom and make you pay for your fresh behavior."
"Wait right here, I'll throw them all out."
"Don't even think about it. Chuck thank you for being so welcoming to Mom and Molly. They've already fallen in love with you."
Chuck sighs, "I love them too. I wish we could keep Molly."
"I know Baby, me too. It would be too hard to explain to her… one day we'll tell her. Until then we can do our best to keep her close and love her."
The oven dings, Sarah pulls out the two pizzas and puts in two more. Chuck cuts the pizzas. "Let's eat, we have a whole life to enjoy her." Sarah grabs the plates, and they head out into the dining room.
The party is lively as everyone sits down to eat. Gretchen brings out the salad she prepared, and Alex and Morgan bring out beer and soft drinks. The kids are in their booster seats and Molly is sitting between them. Casey stands up. "A moment of your time people. He lifts his beer; I want to make a toast." Everyone is shocked, Casey wants to make a speech.
"When we all met for the first time, let's just say, it was hard on me. A nerd, a pushy skirt, a bearded elf who wouldn't grow up, a handsome brave Marine." Everyone laughs. "Yeah, it was weird. Look where we are today. A wonderful family growing more each day. Welcome Emma and Molly, you are truly an answer to Sarah's prayers. I'm grateful to be part of this thing." Casey pauses, "I heard from the White House today. Congress approved my medal. I have the date of the ceremony, and your wedding.
