The roaring of an engine was almost the only thing Cardin could hear, that and the noticeably unhinged laughter of the red haired ram boy who gleefully pushed on the pedal of the black, beaten to hell car the two boys sat in. The slums of the city had a severe lack of law enforcement which almost encouraged Adam's driving. Broken down cars, trash and beggars littered the streets they drove down. This was an area most would believe to be dangerous, hostile and to be avoided at all costs, but to the two of them and to people who shared their "Disability" it was home.
"Adam! Would you slow the fuck down already? You just got out of jail, you wanna go back?" Cardin held onto the half broken, dingy handlebar residing just above the window as he shouted "You're gonna get us killed real damn quick!" The copper haired dropout would be the first to admit Adam was a reckless driver even before he got a license and because of that, Cardin now had a permanent fear of speeding.
"Live a little Cardin!" Adam retorted, slowing only a little just to make a turn without flipping the car before speeding back up with a laugh. This was only normal for Adam when he had gotten his hands on a Happiness booster. Something incredibly hard to get, especially for a felon. But that was the least of Cardin's worries as his hand gripped the handlebar even tighter in both fear and irritation.
"Are you using again?"
"Am I what? Using? Of course! You think I can be this happy without some support?" The red haired boy pointed accusingly to his 'friend' "I'm having the time of my life and you're bringing down the damn mood, like always!" A sharp turn, which was a bit too careless, causing them to slam the back end of the car into another car parked on the side of the street. A loud screech from the wheels and desperate whine from the brakes latching hard against the routers so suddenly, filled the air, while inside the car, Cardin screamed and Adam, high on his booster, could only laugh. His eyes were positioned in surprised terror yet his lips curled into a carefree, open smile that leaked uncontrollable laughter.
It must have been only minutes from spinning out to be halted sideways in the street. But to the view of the two in the car, it was much longer. The next thing Cardin knew, he was looking over the dashboard, both hands on the now completely broken handle bar in front of him. He could see the streaks of black, marked concrete the tires had made along the street, where they started at the beginning of the curve of the street, heading to the parked blue car with a now completely destroyed front end, and ending where they sat.
Stunned silence broke with a chuckle of Adam's harsh voice, completely unable to feel anything but a good laugh as he clenched the steering wheel of his car and simply pushed on the gas pedal slowly, the car somehow able to roll along but not without a loud grinding of metal on pavement.
"Y-You're insane." Cardin was still reeling from what had just happened but before he could scold Adam, he was cut off.
"Shut up! And don't say shit! You're an accessory to this now, if I go, you go. So just chill out!" Adam was clearly as upset and stunned by what happened. But when he yelled like that, he got scary. Cardin, of all people, knew how easy it was for him to fly off the handle so he needed to calm the air.
The engine roared again, driving down a long stretch of road. Pieces of the back fender flew off at the speed they were going.
"I guess your 'Perfect driving' claim just got tossed out the window." Cardin attempted a joke, a poor attempt at that. His hand clenched the fabric of his jeans tight, trying to hide his anxiety and fear as best as possible to make sure this man didn't drive them off a cliff or worse. The weak chuckle that left Cardin was pitiful, just another attempt to raise the mood.
This all did bring a smile to Adam's face, a light laugh that slowly turned into a full loud one just as they suddenly braked hard at an open area surrounded by fields and bushes. It was a place where people went to be alone, a large hill that overlooked the decrepit city.
"I can't believe I didn't notice till now. Do you think I'm an idiot Cardin? Fuck, you're just like her." Adam spoke sharply, yet the Happiness drug still held its effect on him. That permanent smile, making his chapped lips curve almost painfully and that anger in his eyes that didn't move from looking out the window.
"What? You mean Blake? What are you talking about?"
"She said and did the same shit you just did, you're scared of me, just like she was! You said you would never be scared of me." Adam finally looked at Cardin, his smile beginning to fade, the drug was starting to ware off, and because of that, Cardin knew he had a limited time before things would get really bad.
"I should have known, I thought maybe since you were a guy it would be different. That maybe I can be myself and I wouldn't have to worry about anything. I thought since you were defected where it counts I could just be me." Adam's hands tightened on the steering wheel. "But you're just as sensitive and annoying as she was, the only difference between you two is I still can't get her out of my head!"
Now it was Cardin's turn to get angry. "Maybe the problem is you! You dumbass! You just slammed this piece of junk into another car and drove away, then threatened me immediately! Do you even think how that might feel?! No, of course not! You're too busy feeling guilty all the time and getting high off your ass!"
Cardin started grabbing his things. "I shouldn't have dropped out for you. I shouldn't have gotten in this stupid relationship with you. I wasted my time and fucked up my life for false promises and a dead beat boyfriend." His hand rested on the handle of the car door.
Suddenly, a fist, hitting Cardin's face. The strike caused his head to bounce off the hard glass of the window, disorienting him to the point of opening the door and falling out of the car.
"Fuck off!" Adam screamed from the car followed by the distinct sound of a door opening and slamming shut.
Cardin fought to see straight and attempt to stand, wobbling as he did. It was the first time he had been sucker punched in his life, dealing with the pain would be the job of the adrenaline for now. When he did get to his feet, Adam was already in front of him, striking again.
The stomach, the ribs, chest, Cardin was lost on what to do. He tried to put his arms up to defend himself even a little but failed as he was outmatched and overwhelmed.
"I can't trust anyone anymore. You and everyone else looks at me like I'm some kind of villain!" Adam grabbed ahold of Cardin's sweater, pulling him close and moving the both of them. All Cardin could see was Adam at his angriest and that they were getting farther and farther from the car and the road.
"You are... Fucking insane." With busted, bleeding lips, it was the last thing Cardin would be able to say as Adam grinned, a triumphant, knowing grin made out of pure evil enjoyment.
"I might be, but I'm the one still alive!"
Suddenly, he pushed Cardin.
A gasp left the dropouts lips as his feet stepped on nothing. Adam had pushed him over the large hill the car rested on. He tumbled for what felt like an hour, trying to catch himself on anything to stop his fall, but he wasn't that lucky.
The last thing he remembered was looking up to the sky when he had finally stopped tumbling. He could feel the dirt and rocks stabbing into his back and getting into new opened wounds. He heard the car's engine come to life far above him and soon leave.
All he had now was the silence of nature, the cool breeze that came through the trees and bushes, stinging his cuts. And a beautiful sunset.
The last thought he could remember at that time was if he died there, at least he would have had a nice sight before going. His eyes soon shut before succumbing to unconsciousness.
