Jeff's eyes slowly flutter open as the morning sun streams through his window. He stretches his limbs, feeling the stiffness of his muscles after a long night's rest. Jeff's morning routine is always the same, he rises at the same time every day, showers for exactly 8 minutes, brushes his teeth for two minutes, and dresses in his perfectly pressed shirt and pants. He heads straight to the bathroom to begin his daily ritual. The shower water cascades down his body, cleansing him of any impurities. He takes his time washing every inch of his body, trying to scrub away any potential germs. After his shower, he carefully dries off and gets dressed, selecting his usual outfit of a blue shirt, yellow-tan shorts, and white socks w/sandals. He heads to the kitchen to make himself breakfast, his usual bowl of oatmeal and a cup of skim milk.
As Jeff sits down to eat his breakfast, he turns on the TV to check the morning news. To his surprise, the headline reads "Missing Kids Court Case Involving Bucky O'Neil."

Jeff finishes his breakfast and decides to call his parents to let them know that he'll be hanging out with Clarence today. He grabs the phone and dials their number.

"Hey Mom, just wanted to let you know that I'm going to hang out with Clarence today. We're going to our treehouse in the woods."

After receiving his mom's approval, Jeff packs his backpack with his notebook, pens, and some snacks, then heads out the door. He hops on his bike and pedals his way to the woods where their treehouse is located.

When he arrives at the treehouse, he sees Clarence and Sumo already there, looking a little concerned. "Hey guys, what's up?" Jeff asks as he climbs up the ladder to the treehouse.

"Jeff, you gotta see this," Clarence says, holding a news article. "Bucky O'Neil is going to court and they're saying we might have to testify."

"I know right! I just saw it on the news, what are we going to do if we have to testify?" Jeff asks, looking up at his friends.

Clarence and Sumo exchange a worried glance before Sumo speaks up. "We gotta figure out what to say if they call us up there. We can't just let Bucky go down for something he didn't do."

Jeff nods in agreement. "Yeah, we need to be prepared. We'll have to remember everything that happened that day and be ready to tell the truth, no matter how scary it is."

Just then, the sound of footsteps interrupts their conversation and they turn to see Chelsea climbing up the ladder to the treehouse. "Hey guys, have you heard about Bucky O'Neil?" she asks, a worried expression on her face.

"We just saw the news report," Jeff responds. "It looks like we might have to testify."

Chelsea's eyes widened in shock. "Oh no, this is bad," she says. "We need to make sure we have our story straight if we're called up to the stand."

The four friends sit in silence for a moment, each lost in their own thoughts. Finally, Jeff stands up and speaks. "Alright, let's get to work. We need to start taking notes and making sure we remember every detail of that day."

As the days passed, Chelsea, Jeff, Clarence, and Sumo worked tirelessly to get their story straight. They met at the treehouse every day after school, pouring over every detail of their encounter with Bucky O'Neil and the events that followed. They wanted to make sure they were ready to testify in court, no matter what questions were thrown their way.

Jeff paced back and forth in the small room, muttering under his breath as he tried to recall the exact timeline of events. Sumo and Clarence were huddled over a map of the town, marking the different locations they had been at during their journey. Chelsea sat nearby, flipping through a notebook filled with notes and observations she had made during their trip.

"Okay, so we met Bucky in the forest around noon," Jeff said, his voice growing more frustrated with each passing moment. "Then what? We drove around for a while, stopped at that diner...no, wait, that was after the car broke down."

Chelsea glanced up from her notebook. "I think we got lost around 1:00 pm," she offered. "And we didn't meet Bucky a day after, or was it two days?".

Sumo and Clarence looked up from the map, nodding in agreement. "Yeah, that sounds right," Sumo said. "And we were definitely by that one town when we got pulled over by the cop."

The four friends worked late into the night, piecing together every detail of their journey with Bucky O'Neil. They debated the best way to explain their involvement without incriminating themselves or Bucky. It was a delicate balance, but they knew it was essential to getting the truth out.

The next day, the group gathered at a diner to continue their preparations. They scribbled furiously on napkins as they tried to come up with a clear and concise statement of what had happened. They debated different phrasings, trying to ensure that everything they said was accurate and convincing.

As the day wore on, the group grew more confident in their ability to testify. They practiced their testimony in front of each other, stumbling over their words at first but gradually growing more sure of themselves. They went over different scenarios that the prosecution might bring up, trying to anticipate any curveballs that might be thrown their way.

"All right, let's start with the basics," Chelsea said, looking up from her notebook. "What was the date of the field trip?"

"Um, it was last month, right?" Sumo asked, scratching his head.

"More specifically, it was on Sept 13th," Chelsea said, flipping through her notes.

"Right, right," Jeff said, nodding. "And then we got lost in the woods and stumbled upon Bucky O'Neil."

"Who helped us get back to Aberdale in his car," Clarence added.

"But then the car broke down and he stole it back from the mechanics," Sumo said.

Jeff interrupted Sumo. "We can't say that, Sumo. If we do, we're incriminating Bucky," Jeff said firmly.

Sumo looked at Jeff, confused. "But it's what happened," he protested.

"I know, but we need to come up with a different excuse. Something that doesn't make it look like Bucky stole the car," Jeff explained.

Clarence nodded in agreement. "Jeff's right. We need to be careful. We don't want to make things worse for Bucky."

Chelsea spoke up, offering a suggestion. "What if we say that Bucky went back to the mechanic to check on the car, and the mechanic gave it back to him?"

The others thought for a moment before nodding in agreement. "That could work," Jeff said with a smile. "Let's make sure we remember to say that in court."

"And then we got pulled over by that cop in the other town," Chelsea said. "And he thought Bucky was kidnapping us."

"What if they ask us what kind of car Bucky was driving?" Sumo asked, grinning.

"Uh, a red one?" Jeff guessed.

"That's not very helpful," Chelsea said, rolling her eyes.

"Well, I mean, I don't know much about cars," Jeff admitted, shrugging.

"You don't know much about anything," Sumo teased, earning a playful punch from Jeff.

After finishing their testimony practice, the four friends took a deep breath and looked at each other with a mixture of determination and anxiety. They had done everything they could to prepare for the court case, but the looming sense of uncertainty was still present.

The following day, as they walked home from school, Jeff noticed a flyer posted on a telephone pole. "Guys, look at this," he said, pointing to the poster. "The Aberdale Community Fair is tomorrow. It might be a good way to take our minds off things before the trial."

Chelsea nodded in agreement. "It could be fun to just relax and enjoy ourselves for a little while."

Clarence and Sumo grinned at the idea. "Yeah, let's do it!" they said in unison.

The four friends spent the rest of the evening excitedly planning out their trip to the fair, trying to forget about the impending court case for just one night.

The next day, they spent hours wandering through the colorful stalls and booths, munching on corn dogs and cotton candy, and playing games. As the sun began to set and the fair started to wind down, the group found themselves sitting on a grassy hill overlooking the festivities.

"It's been a good day," Jeff said, smiling contentedly. "I feel like we're ready for tomorrow."

The others nodded in agreement, and for a few moments, they simply sat in silence, watching the sun dip below the horizon. But even as they enjoyed the moment, the nervous anticipation of the trial still lingered in the back of their minds, a reminder that their adventure was far from over.
