"I feel like you're up to something," Serena looked Darien up and down, as he held her hand. His grip was not too tight to the point her hand hurt, but enough for her to know he didn't want her to let go. He checked his phone again.
"Maybe I am..." He said with a coy smile. The door to elevator opened.
"My apologies ma'am, sir." A man in a suit with a name badge said moving to the side to the let the two out. His face was clammy and he was nervous.
"Have a great night," Serena nodded as she walked by him.
"And happy Valentine's Day to you two." He said slipping into the elevator, slamming one of the buttons.
"What was he doing up on this floor? This late?" Serena asked confused. "Shouldn't he be guarding the door?"
Darien, just rolled his eyes and sighed.
"What's wrong?" Serena asked as the approached the door to the apartment.
"Look you're going to know the second you walk in...anyways... and you're going to know.." He said stopping at the door to look at her. "I am not good at planning these things okay? I like the idea of being romantic, but sometimes to be romantic you need to be spontaneous. And sometimes spontaneous is hard, with work, friends, plans that do not fall through correctly."
Serena listened confused, but did not want to interrupt his rant.
"Outside of the coffee, and first set of flowers, nothing went right."
"Dinner was great." Serena reassured him.
"I threw that out on a whim because your pizza was bad." Darien explained.
"It wasn't bad, I just didn't want it." She justified. "And just because you didn't make a reservation doesn't make it less great. I hate places like those anyways."
"Then dessert, I had this last minute idea in my head, to just do our own sundae bar, but nobody was replying. Finally the guard replied and helped me grab some things for the little store in the hall way. I am not even sure what he got. I am sure he didn't have time to make it 'cute,' so you're going to know it is was a last minute idea."
Serena just looked at Darien surprised with a smile.
"And now you're looking at me with nothing to say."
"Darien... just open the door. Whatever it is in there, I will love it, because you thought of it." Serena putting her hand to his face to softly caress his cheek.
"You say that because there is no mean bone in that entire body of yours." Darien answered with frustration and anger.
"Please open the door, I wanna see what is in there."
He sighed and aggressively grabbed the nob. Swung the door open to his regular apartment. Everything still in its place. The food they left behind.
"The didn't have rose pedals or roses in that stupid mart." He kicked off his shoes, and slipped on his house slippers, as Serena entered.
"But loooooook at all these amazing desserts, and candies," Serena sang, as she kicked off her shoes and ran towards the kitchen.
"He didn't even set them up nicely." Darien huffed as he grabbed her shoes out of the walk way and slammed the door.
Serena slammed her hand on the counter top, "Darien would you please stop! First of all that is not his job. His job is to make sure weirdos don't come into our lobby. And second, this is perfect!"
"Again, you-"
"No, I am not just saying that! This is perfect!" Serena said pulling out a spoon from the drawers. "You can never go wrong with double chocolate ice cream you know, and gummy bears."
"This is not what they would have done in those movies, this garbage compared to them."
"Darien, if you don't stop, I am going to take all this stuff to Mina, and call it a night." Serena snapped as she slammed the ice cream lid down. "I literally told you this, all of this... was perfect."
He walked over to her defeated.
"What I love about those Lifetime movies, is the thought and the effort. And you did that all tonight." She grabbed his hand. "You may have had help, but I am sure they always do in those movies too. You cannot take it so literal."
"So you wouldn't like if you came home to flowers on flowers?" Darien asked skeptical.
"I didn't say I wouldn't, I love flowers, who doesn't love flowers" Serena responded as Darien slumped into the stool. "But I love more that it came from you. You thought about it, and the effort you took to make it happen."
She started to rub his shoulder.
"I know you can easily pay someone to make a Lifetime Movie moment happen, but it is not the same. You being involved in all this... I would take it over all the roses." She kissed his cheek. "Can you stop sulking now and make a little sundae with me?"
"Did he grab vanilla?" Darien responded.
"Yes he grabbed you a vanilla." She pointed.
"He couldn't even open the candy?"
"Darien!" Serena scolded.
"I am sorry, I am sorry." Darien replied getting up to stand next to her. "I just wanted something... to wow..."
He watched as she licked some chocolate off her finger.
Without thinking he put his hand on her waist and pulled her into him. She looked at him surprised.
"I really do love you," Darien whispered. "I know I never tell you..."
"Unless you're drunk." Serena inserted. "Some people will say that doesn't count, but I think it does." She shrugged.
"Wow, trying to be romantic right now." Darien replied.
"I know, and I love you too." Serena replied, as he leaned in to kiss her.
"I have loved you since the first day I met you," He whispered. "That night with Mina and Malachite, you wore that pink top, with the skirt."He moved her bangs out of her face.
"You remember what I wore that night?" Serena asked shocked.
"I remember everything. What you drank. The song you made me dance too." He rolled his eyes. "That loser that tried to ask you to dance, and wouldn't take the hint."
"I remember him! He smelled like teeny bopper clothing store cologne." Serena made a disgusted face. "And how you yelled at the poor kid."
"What? He wasn't taking the hint. You were being too nice, and honestly, I didn't want you going off with him. I knew if you went off with him, I would have never gotten a chance again."
"You would have," Serena whispered."I thought you were cute." She smiled.
"Well thank god for my looks." He acknowledged. He then looked deep into her blue eyes. "Are you sure you're happy here, with me?"
She gently caressed his face. "I wouldn't be here if I wasn't."
"I need to hear you say it." His voice displayed a vulnerability Serena had never heard before.
"I am happy here, with you, the way we are."
"I am going to be better. I am going to be the man that you will brag to all your friends about."
"You do-"
"Yes, I do. I am not going to let some guy come in and swoop you away. I would die losing you that way." He pressed his lips against hers and pulled her in tightly to him. Her hads rested on his chest.
It was not like a kiss they normally shared. It was deeper kiss, one that he needed to make up for all the other kisses he had missed while she was away. He put his hand on her other side, and like a reflex, he lifted her on to counter top.
"Wow, it really does happen just like that." He joked between a moment for air. "Just like in the movies."
"You're such a dork." Serena exhaled take in a quick breath before his lips against connected with hers for a peck.
"I will always be your dork." He replied.
"Oh my god! How many of my movies did you watch?" She threw her head back with a laugh.
"Enough." He shrugged.
"So what are we going to do now. Make sundaes? Or let everything melt." She looked at all the food items on the counter. Almost regretting mentioning it because who knows what the moment would be like after.
"It is your day, whatever you want..."He kissed her cheek.
"Hmmmmm, as yummy as this all looks," She took a scoop of ice cream and put it in her mouth. She let it fully melt. "I think we can save it for tomorrow."
"Are you sure?" Darien double checked.
"Wait one more bite!" She took a bigger scoop. "Now you can put it all away."
"Thanks," Darien looked at weird. "Please don't get a brain freeze."
"Please don't get a brain freeze." She mocked in a higher pitch voice, making a face at him.
"You left some chocolate on your chin." Darien said putting the candy in the drawer.
"Where?" Serena wiped her face with her hand.
"I was just kidding, I am just using that excuse to do this." He grabbed her face kissed her again. He pulled away seconds later. "You know I never was a huge fan of chocolate, but you definitely make it taste better."
Serena shook her head. The first time she could ever remember Darien speaking like this was after Malachite's birthday party, when they had first started really talking. He had had so much to drink. Not on purpose, he claimed, but still too much, and he was just like this. Goofy, trying to be romantic, not worrying about his doctor image, even slouching. And that had to be when she fell for him. Seeing him finally let loose. Every now and then she would get a small glimpse, but this time it was more than that.
"Let me guess...so cheesy?" Darien mocked interrupting her thought process.
"No... Serena said running her hands down his collar.
"Then what are you thinking about?" He kissed her forehead.
"Nothing..." Serena said looking back at him.
"You're obviously thinking something." He gave her small kiss on the lips. "Tell me what are you thinking."
A pink tint appeared upon her cheeks. She cleared her throat. "I am thinking, this is the part of my movies, where we go to the room, and it then cuts to the scene where we just lay there, cuddled next to each other. What happens in between..."
"So... to the room we go?" He asked scooping her into his arms.
She wrapped her legs around him, encircled her arms around his neck, and nodded.
