Chapter One: Ayash

The Fire Lord had been defeated, and the world was once again at peace. Aang and Katara stepped back in from the balcony, cheeks flushed from their kiss. All of a sudden, the door to the room flew open, revealing a girl with long wavy black hair. It went down to her waist, framing her pretty face. She had large, gray eyes, a small nose, and full pink lips. "Oh, Aang!" she cried, "I've finally found you!" She threw her arms around him and held him tight for a moment. Katara was a little annoyed. "Um, Aang, who is this exactly?" She felt a little cheated, she and Aang had just kissed, and now some other girl randomly appeared!

"I, I think that this is my twin sister, Ayash, but I was positive that she died along with the rest of the Airbenders one hundred years ago." The girl let go of Aang and said, "It's true, Aang! It's really me. I searched for you for so long. I missed you so much!" Ayash began to cry. "How come I never knew that you had a sister?" asked Sokka, confused. "I didn't want to think about the possibility that she had died. It was just so painful, so I didn't mention it," Aang whispered.

"What I want to know, is how she survived all this time," Uncle Iroh said. "Actually, I'd really like to know that too," added Aang. Everyone else agreed and pulled chairs around the one that Ayash had sat down in and waited for her to start. Ayash looked shyly around herself and began her story.

"It was a cloudy night and Aang had learned the day before that he was the Avatar. It was custom that the male and female monks live their lives separately most of the time. We trained and slept on different halves of the temples, but met in the heart of the temple to eat our meals and celebrate on special occasions. I hadn't been able to talk to Aang the day he found out because I was so busy with my Airbending lessons that I couldn't visit until late the next evening." "Ayash, you're an airbender?" Suki asked, amazed. "Yes," answered Ayash, "but you can call me Aya. As I was saying, I couldn't see Aang until very late, and I arrived at his room just as he placed a note on his bed and flew out the window. I carefully opened the note and read it.

Aang was running away. I couldn't believe that he would leave me, but I had heard that he was very upset about being separated from Monk Gyatso and had not left his room for quite a while. I opened my glider and flew out the window after putting the note back on the bed. I guessed that you were going to run away on Appa, so I headed to where the Sky Bison slept. I saw you fly off into a storm cloud as I touched down, Aang. Then, I did a kind of stupid thing, I followed Aang on my glider. The storm was extremely strong and it was a while before I noticed something following me. It was a baby Sky Bison. I don't know why it followed me, but it did, and the wind was picking up.

I had been following Aang for an hour and my glider was no match for Appa. Then, the wind blew me straight into Appa's tail, along with the baby bison. We held on for dear life while I called to you, too scared to climb up into the saddle. I doubt that Aang heard me over the storm and all of a sudden I was falling through the air. The baby bison flailed helplessly next to me, so I grabbed her and held her tightly. We plunged deep into the cold ocean water and struggled to stay afloat until Aang and Appa fell on top of us and we were pushed under. By this time, I was cold and numb and I could barely feel my fingers. All of a sudden, the water got even colder, and I was suspended at the very bottom of an iceberg for a hundred years."
