Chapter 4

The sun was starting to set in the distance before Jimmy decided that they were officially lost and should take another break. Taking a seat on the grass near a broken down car, Ava patted next to her for Jimmy to sit down. Jimmy looked at her as he sat next to her.

"Ava, I …." Jimmy started to say as he reached over and took Ava's hand. "I think maybe this wasn't the best idea I have ever had."

"No kidding Jimmy. We are in the middle of nowhere without food or water. I don't even think we could find our way back. Boy when we screw up, we do it big time. "she bit out sarcastically. Squeezing his hand to let him know that it wasn't his entire fault.

"Yeah, I'm really sorry that I talked you into this. " Jimmy rambled.

"Jimbo, I could have said no, but I didn't. Hey look at it this way. We get to spend the night next to each other." Ava said as she gave him a flirty little wink.

"Oh yeah , I can only imagine the look on Mr. Mason and Evan's faces when they find out we slept together in the backseat of this car. "Jimmy said with a smirk. Ava began to giggle at that thought. Evan would blow a gasket if he heard it said that way. Jimmy joined her laughter. Ava lay back on the grass and Jimmy was hovering just above her head. He licked his lips, she was staring at him, he leaned in and their lips touched. They smiled at each other as he pulled away.

Ava couldn't believe that Jimmy had just kissed her; she had been waiting on this for the past five weeks. She really liked Jimmy a lot. Rolling onto her side she laid her head on his chest,

Jimmy put his arm around Ava as she lay on his chest. Jimmy felt a lot better after he finally kissed her. He had been so scared that she wouldn't like him kissing her.

"I really liked that" Ava whispered.

"Me too" Jimmy whispered back. They both fell asleep in each other's arms.

Jimmy was jerked out of his sleep by the sound of voices. He put his hand over Ava's mouth as she was startled awake by the voices as well.

"I really think we should stop and rest" one deep male voice said.

"Yeah I think so too, I just wish we could find this resistance group." Another deep male voice said. "I just really hope the kids are with them."

Ava pushed Jimmy's hand away from her mouth and jumped up. Jimmy tried to hold onto her but she was halfway around the car before he could stop her.

"Chance! Ryan!" Jimmy heard Ava yell. He jumped up and followed her but at a slower pace.

Ava ran and jumped into Chance's expecting arms. Chance clung to his little sister as she started blabbing "Oh God Chance, Ryan I can't believe ya'll are alive. Jimmy and I got lost and we should have listened to Evan and Mr. Mason and stayed at camp but we didn't, now here you are I was so worried that ya'll were dead like daddy!"

"Whoa slow down there, Munchkin. I can't understand you when you ramble like that. Now you said that you were with Jimmy, who is that?" Chance told her in that paternal tone. Ava sheepishly realized that she had just sold out her and Jimmy, who was still standing hidden in the shadows. Chance placed here back on her feet.

Ava hollered out "Jimmy, its okay, It's Chance and Ryan"

Jimmy began to shuffle his way over, looking rather 's brothers were both well over six foot tall and very muscular. They were definitely intimidating. Ryan had picked up his sister in a huge bear hug. Ava was trying to wipe away the tears that started falling. Jimmy gave her a concerned look. "Ava?"

"I'm ok Jimmy just overwhelmed" she said from the comfort of Ryan's arms.

"Munchkin, why are the two of you out here by yourselves?" Chance asked her in a very stern voice. He looked around for signs of anyone else. Ava buried her head into Ryan's chest. Jimmy looked at the ground as Chance's stern glare landed on him. "I expect an answer. Where's Evan? Has he been with you?"

"Evan left a week ago with a group looking for survivors like us. " Ava's muffled voice came from Ryan's chest. "I decided that I couldn't wait any longer and was going to go look for ya'll I and Jimmy just came along to make sure I didn't get hurt"

Jimmy couldn't believe that Ava was lying to these huge men. Ava cast him a look that said just goes with it. Jimmy swallowed hard as Chance looked back at him. He saw a flash of frustration go across his face before it disappeared. Chance knew she was lying to protect the kid she was with it was written all over the kids face.

"Okay, we will discuss this in the morning, for now I think we need to find shelter to sleep in."

Ava was placed back on the ground. Ryan and Chance began to walk and it was unspoken the two teens should follow. Ava took Jimmy's hand in hers as they started walking. Jimmy looked at the men making sure they weren't looking and leaned down and placed a quick kiss on her lips. Smiling they followed the men into the night.
