Chapter 5

Ava and Jimmy were still holding hands an hour later, as they followed Ryan and Chance in silence. Ava knew that her brothers picked up on her lie but wouldn't say anything until they were safe. Chance turned around to make sure the kids were still behind them, and noticed the hand holding.

"So Ava, how close are the two of you anyway? Anything I should know?" Chance asked while he turned around and continued walking backwards so he could look at the teens. He had to do his best not to smirk at the look of panic come across her face.

"Jimmy's …..Umm….we…just... um" Ava sputtered while her cheeks turned rosy. Jimmy could see the smirk on Chance's face and knew he was teasing his sister. Ava looked at Jimmy and saw him smirking at her. Punching him in the arm she said "It's not funny!"

"Ouch, that hurt, Babe" Jimmy whined as he rubbed his arm. Ava punched his arm again.

"I think they are pretty close, he so just called our baby sister Babe." Ryan pitched in as well. "Maybe we should stop walking and have the birds and bees talk with them."

"No! No way, I think walking's a good thing. Right Jimmy?" Ava said as she picked up her speed. There was no way she was going to let them have that talk with her and Jimmy. She had suffered thru it with her dad. Jimmy was blushing as bad as Ava. Ryan and Chance smiled at each other. Sometimes it was so much fun to torture their younger sister. Chance was about to say something when the ground began to shake. Everyone froze on the spot. Ava and Jimmy were about three feet in front of Chance and Ryan. Looking around trying to figure out where the mechs were coming from.

"Oh shit, I don't have my gun" Jimmy said tremble evident in his voice. Ava looked back at Ryan and Chance they both had pistols pulled out. That's when Ava saw two mech's, then the laser beams were pointed directly at Ava and Jimmy's heads. The teens were frozen to the spot in fear. Ava screamed as Ryan tackled them out of the way. The blast that had been aimed at their heads caused a tree to explode. Chance was firing his gun at the mechs as Ryan pulled the kids up.

"Run!" Ryan yelled at them and he started pushing them toward the wooded area nearby. Ava's heart was pounding so hard she thought that it would come out of her chest. They were running when all of the sudden a Skitter appeared in front of them. It grabbed Ava, she screamed. "Ryan!"

Ryan started shooting at the green monster. Jimmy stood paralyzed with fear as Ryan continued shooting that skitter. Finally the thing fell on the ground trapping Ava under it. Jimmy ran to help Ava out from under the skitter

"Ava! Are you okay? Ava!" Jimmy kept yelling while pulling on the skitter. Finally he moved it off of her. Ava started screaming.

"Oh God! Jimmy! It Oh God!" Jimmy was helping her to her feet as Ryan came running toward them.

"Run Ava Jimmy Run! We ran out of Ammo!" Ryan yelled as he started pulling them along Chance was hot on their heels. They made it into the woods and Ryan shoved them into some bushes. Jimmy and Ava lay down as flat as the could while Ryan and Chance covered them with their bodies. Ryan was right above Ava.

"Shh, we have to be quiet, Munchkin." Was all that he said? That's when they heard gunfire and people shouting. Looking to her side she saw Jimmy under Chance. Jimmy locked eyes with her.

"I think Evan and Mr. Mason found us" Jimmy whispered. Chance put his hand over Jimmy's mouth, as signal to be quiet. They lay like that listening to gunfire and would flinch every once in a while as did Jimmy. As much as they wanted to believe that they were grown, they were still a couple of kids glad to have adults looking out for them.

The four of them heard footsteps approaching the woods.

"Hello, it's safe to come out of hiding, I know you have children with you, I heard the screams, you will be safe with us, we are with the resistance" Ava and Jimmy both recognized the voice of Mr. Mason. Feeling slightly guilty the teens looked at each other as Ryan and Chance helped them to their feet.

"We are coming out. "Chance yelled back. As they came into the clearing, Tom instantly recognized the teens.

"What are you two doing this far from camp!" he practically shouted. Running forward to check on the teens. Evan was also beside them within seconds.

"Ava? " Evan said looking her over but stopped as he realized who the two men were that accompanied the two teens. "Ryan? Chance?"

"Yes it's us, little brother" Chance said embracing him. Ryan did the same as soon as Chance released him. Once everyone got over the shock of finding the teens and the missing siblings, Evan, Tom, Ryan, and Chance turned toward the teens.

"Which one wants to explain why you left camp?" Evan asked all paternally. He had his arms crossed in front of him. Jimmy and Ava exchanged looks. Evan had seen the two of them do this before; it was like they were having a silent conversation. Ava saw Jimmy give her the look that said, do-something-that-will-hold-them-off, so she immediately burst into tears.

Not being able to stand seeing her in tears Evan wrapped his arms around her "Sshh, it's all over now."

Chance gave Ryan a knowing look. "Evan, I think maybe we should get back to your camp then continue this discussion in private"

Jimmy saw Ava turn and give him a wink as she dried her eyes. Tom gave the signal and they all started walking. Chance decided that Ava looked rather tired and picked her up to carry her.

"Thanks" she mumbled right before she laid her head on his shoulder and fell asleep.

Jimmy watched as Ava slept on her brother's was amazing; she seemed to know how to get them out of tricky situation, that was a definite. They walked in silence for another two hours before they reached the school. As they approached Ava woke up and Chance put her on the ground. She fell into step with Jimmy. Jimmy reached out and took her hand. Hal and Anne were standing at the doors glaring at the two teens,

"Where did you find them, Dad?" Hal asked not even trying to hide his anger. "They snuck off when I was distracted"

"Yeah with Karen's face" Ava snorted. Then looked down as all the men turned to look at her. Hal was blushing.

"I can see we need to talk, but let's take it somewhere more private, shall we use the clinic?" Anne said to the group. Tom nodded and led the way.

Ava and Jimmy had a lot to explain and neither was quiet sure how to start. Dreading the conversation coming up the teens drug their feet as they followed the group.
