Chapter 7: For Shogun and Country part 2
December 5, 2001
Takeru rotated his shoulders, adjusting his fortified suit as he turned into the hall where the briefing room lay. Outside, Takeru saw Chizuru leaning against the wall, eyes closed and head tilted back. "You alright Class rep?" Takeru walked up to Chizuru.
"Shirogane," Chizuru tilted her head to look at the floor. "Can I ask you something, Takeru?"
"Anything," Takeru shrugged, smiling at Chizuru.
"How did you become so strong?" Chizuru looked at her hands before balling them into fists. Takeru's smile turned gentler as he grabbed Chizuru's hands making her gasp.
"You're afraid," Takeru said plainly.
Chizuru looked away but kept her hands in his. She could not deny the sense of comfort they brought him. "Yes," she admitted it shamefully.
"Chizuru, fear isn't a weakness. Actually, someone very dear to me once told me being a coward was just fine with her." Takeru thought of the day he passed out during the Niigata BETA incursion. He remembered Marimo's words dearly as they got him through Iceberg, Babylon, and beyond. "Everyone is afraid of dying. The key is to remember why you shouldn't die."
"But you aren't afraid Takeru!" Chizuru balled her hands into fists. How can you say it's okay? What if my fear gets somebody killed?
Takeru held her balled hands firmly in his own. "I am always afraid Chizuru."
Chizuru gasped, not used to Takeru using her first name. He always used his little nickname for her.
"I'm afraid of you dying on me," Takeru sighed, letting the worry he usually kept hidden worm into his words. "I'm afraid any of you will die on me. I'm so scared that I will lose the people I care about in my life again." Takeru shook his head, "so be afraid, and remember to come back." Takeru took a deep breath and exhaled it shakily. I'm also afraid you'll see the kind of man I am. I'm afraid I'll expose how easy it's become to kill my fellow man. All of you will look at me with fear if I become the Dragon of the West again. Takeru pursed his lips, the words of his enemies echoing in his mind.
"He's a monster!"
"S-stay away from me!"
"Oh god, he's coming for me, somebody, anybody, help me!"
"Please…I don't want to die."
"Shirogane," Chizuru looked at her friend in a new light. Despite Takeru's friendliness, she always felt Takeru was so far away from her. She was always looking at his back like he had everything figured out. "Then, I'll do my best to ensure we all return." Chizuru turned her hands and held Takeru's. Chizuru blushed, looking down at their hands. She had never held hands with a boy before.
Takeru closed his eyes, forcing the voices down. After all, he's had plenty of practice. "Yeah, I would appreciate that Class rep," Takeru sighed relieved, and let Chizuru's hands go.
"Shirogane!" Chizuru straightened and crossed her arms. "We'll come back alive, and when we do." Chizuru blushed, looking away. "You have to stop calling me Class rep!"
"Awh, but I think it fits you?" Takeru gave her a sad look.
"Still, when we make it back, you have to call me Chizuru1" Chizuru turned away from Takeru. Ah, this is so embarrassing!
Takeru blinked once, then grinned. "Alright, then make sure we all come back, Class rep."
With their conversation over, Takeru and Chizuru entered the briefing room. Marimo saw them come in and saluted Takeru along with the other girls sans Chizuru. "2nd Lieutenant Shirogane, XO Kouzuki wants to have a word with you."
"Shit, how long till the briefing?" Takeru scratched his head, slightly annoyed.
"You have time; just make it quick 2nd Lieutenant." Marimo smiled with a laugh.
Takeru jogged down to Yuuko's office and slowed to a walk a foot from the door. "Jeez, at least Yuuko Sensei didn't interrupt that tender moment with Chizuru," Takeru grumbled as he walked through the door. Ah, wait, let's come back alive before I give in to her demand.
"Forgive us if we interrupted you and my daughter's time together."
"Eh," Takeru froze in place, noticing an older man standing next to Yuuko. He had slicked-back brown greying hair, spectacles, and all too familiar eyebrows. No way this is who I think it is. My luck can't be this shitty!
"I know I'm not one for formalities Shirogane, but this is the Prime Minister of Japan." Yuuko looked at him with a Cheshire grin.
"Sorry, Sir, I'm 2nd Lieutenant Shirogane, and you didn't interrupt anything, Sir!" Takeru stiffened to attention and saluted.
"Hm, shame," Sakaki hummed inexplicably.
"Anyway," Yuuko prevented further interactions and addressed Takeru. "I'm sure you'll get the briefing in full detail, but I expect you to pick up a very important package. It should be simple once the package arrives. Bring it here to Yokohoma, and things should line up nicely."
"Meaning?" Takeru raised a brow and stood at parade rest.
"It is essential for future cooperation with the Americans, and perhaps the UN." Sakaki filled in, nodding somberly. "2nd Lieutenant it is no exaggeration when I say this, but you will be holding the heart of Japan in your care."
"This brings us to the next topic. I need you to ensure the Americans do not get the package." Yuuko narrowed her eyes pointedly.
Takeru resisted the urge to groan, but his face probably gave away his feelings. Politics were the bane of his existence, and half the time all of humanities. "I understand your feelings, 2nd Lieutenant, but remember, two countries cannot become allies if one holds something above the other. If we are to stand on equal ground with the Americans, this operation must be handled by someone of Japanese birth."
"So basically you're saying not letting the Americans gloat they fixed Japan's problems for us?" Takeru sighed and slid his hand through his hair.
"I'm glad we understand each other 2nd Lieutenant Shirogane." Sakaki bowed slightly. "This also goes without saying, but only you know this objective. While I personally do not understand Professor Kouzuki's reasons. She assures me we can count on you to carry this task out without informing your squad."
"Very well, I will complete my mission at all costs!" Takeru saluted and left to participate in the briefing.
Takeru entered as Marimo turned on the display screen. "Ah, 2nd Lieutenant, you arrived just in time." Marimo saluted, and the girls followed suit.
Takeru returned the salute, "right, please start the briefing."
"Very well, first, let us go over what we know so far." A tactical map of southern Japan was displayed on the screen. 2 points were highlighted: Yokohoma Base and Tokyo. "Our intelligence says the enemy consists of the 1st and 2nd Captial Guard Regiments." Two red arrows appeared over Tokyo. "Additionally, the 12th Armored Division has abandoned its posting at the Secondary Defense Line." The map zoomed out to include Niigata and its 3 Defense Lines. From the 2nd line, a red arrow streaked southeast to Tokyo labeled 12th Armored Division. "The Captial Guard Regiments and elements from the 12th Division have also encircled the Shogun's Residence at the Royal Palace." The map zoomed into Tokyo, displaying several red arrows labeled RJF.
Rebel Japanese Forces, is this what the UN has decided to call them? I'm sure the Americans would have preferred insurgents or terrorists. Takeru crossed his arms, humming in thought before looking at Meiya. When Marimo mentioned the Royal Palace was under siege, Meiya had gone rigid. He could tell she wanted nothing more than to saddle up and liberate her sister.
"Captain," Marimo paused, sucking air through her closed teeth. "Forgive me, Sagiri Naoya has declared this 'rebellion' in the Shogun's name." The red arrows around the Palace were all facing away from the Palace. "He has thusly kept his forces facing away from the Royal Palace so as not to be seen raising arms against the Shogun." The screen updated with three arrows in the immediate Palace grounds facing the Rebel forces. "The Shogun as well is being protected by the Royal Guard. The 1st Royal Guard Regiment is currently guarding the Shogun's Residence. While the 2nd and 3rd Regiments patrol the royal Palace perimeter. Our intel also suggests the 16th Royal Guard Regiment is on standby to deploy at any moment." The 2nd and 3rd Regiments were divided into squadrons spread around the Palace grounds. A final Arrow labeled 16th Regiment remained smack on the Shogun's Residence. Takeru clicked his tongue, narrowing his eyes at the 16th Regiment. He's not a coward. If he's not deploying, why do I feel he has a plan to turn things his way?
"Instructor Jinguuji, I have a question," Chizuru raised her hand.
"Go ahead," Marimo nodded.
"Has the rebel leader made his demands?" Chizuru lowered her hand and stood at parade rest.
Marimo's eyes soften briefly looking at Chizuru. "Sagiri Naoya has demanded Prime Minister Sakaki be handed over for trial. He has also demanded the Provisionary government at Sendo to resign their position and establish her Highness Koubuin Yuuhi as the head of state." Marimo's eyes turned to Ayamine next, "he also demands the immediate release of Ayamine Shuukaku."
"!" Both Ayamine and Chizuru gasped, surprised. Hell, Takeru himself felt his eyebrows shoot up. Hold on, I thought he was executed. Just what kind of ripples did my looping cause?
"The UN would never agree to release Kei's dad," Tama looked down, feeling a sense of shame.
Tama, you're probably worried about your dad's involvement in all this. Takeru frowned and looked away briefly. Sagiri, you've made this personal. Making those precious to me feel like this is unforgivable!
"Thank you Instructor Jinguuji; please proceed." Chizuru bowed her head.
Marimo nodded, turning back to the screen. "While Sagiri secures the capital, we have received word that squadrons from other bases have defected." The map zoomed out, and several bases popped up. Of the bases, at least half turned red making everyone gasp. "While our reports indicate the bases are under the control of the rebels, we can be glad in knowing they can only spare a token force to reinforce Sagiri. The rest remain to ensure the Base remains firmly in their control." Marimo crossed her arms and nodded. "Now for the battle plan, keep in mind this plan was agreed upon by the UN, the Provisional Government, and Prime Minister Sakaki himself."
The screen zoomed closer to Yokohoma and Tokyo. "UN Command has authorized the deployment of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Tactical Armored Battalions to the Secondary Defense Line." The screen zoomed out and showed 4 blue arrows deploying north towards the Defense Line. "Additionally, the 5th Air Support Group and 5th Tactical Armored Battalions are deploying as we speak to Tokyo." A blue arrow and plane silhouettes deployed from Yokohoma Base toward Tokyo. "The 2nd Air Support Group and the American 132nd Armored Battalion will deploy shortly after from Yokohoma Base." Another blue arrow and plane silhouettes deployed towards Tokyo. "The Americans will also deploy their 66th Tactical Armored Battalion to Izu and secure the northern end of highway 414. Should the rebel forces advance from their position. The American 108th Tactical Armored Battalion will also deploy further southwest towards Izu." The map zoomed out to show arrows marking the respective battalions deploying to their assigned areas. "Finally, the 209th Tactical Armored Battalion from our UN Yokosuka base will deploy across Sagami Bay to old Ito before securing highway 141 west of their landing." A line from Yokosuka flew straight across Sagami Bay to Ito and then the highway. "Finally, we will be performing rearguard duties for our forces. We will deploy southwest to guard Fort Tougashima, located on the south shore of Lake Ashi." A blue arrow labeled 207th Tactical Platoon flew straight to Tougashima.
"Excuse our tardiness," the door to the briefing room opened, and in walked Tsukuyomi and her subordinates. "Your UN personnel are not as familiar with our Takemikazuchis and require some assistance."
"Please, continue the briefing Sargeant Jinguuji," Yui bowed politely in a golden fortified suit. They waved away the salutes for the sake of the briefing.
"It's no problem, we have already gone through the general battle plan. But, you have arrived just in time for our part to play in the battle."
Our? Takeru gave the Royal Guard Flight a sideglance. He wasn't the only one; Meiya in particular was glaring daggers at Tsukuyomi. Marimo ignored her student's reaction and continued on. "The 9th Independent Guard Flight will be joining us on our mission. 1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi volunteered, and Command has taken her up on her offer."
"It shall be an honor to fight alongside the UN forces today," Tsukuyomi, Yui, and the three girls bowed politely.
"Thank you 1st Lieutenants," Marimo nodded. "Now for our route to Tougashima." The map zoomed in displaying the old roads toward Hakone. "At 19:40 hours, we will deploy north on the old highway 16 on Type-87 Maintenance trucks. Then we'll turn southwest along the Tokyo-Nagoya Expressway towards the ruins of Ebina." A blue arrow left Yokohoma Base north before turning southwest to Ebina. "We will rendezvous with a supply unit from Atsugi Base and the 100th Atsugi Tactical Armored Battalion. They will act as our rearguard, turning Ebina into a supply point for our deployed forces. After we resupply, we will follow the Odawara-Atsugi highway down to the ruins of Odawara." The blue arrow continued southwest, stopping at the Odawara West Interchange. "We will stop once more at the Interchange and deploy in Type-C equipment. This will become our secondary supply point, guarded by the 100th Atsugi Armored Battalion's Sword and Halberd squadrons." From the Interchange, the blue arrow deployed straight to Tougashima. "Finally, we will take Hakone Road and deploy to the fortress."
"Right, this is where I take over," Takeru stepped up before everyone, not missing the glare from Tsukuyomi. "since I'm in command of 207th Tactical Platoon, I will separate us into fire teams." Takeru looked at the girls over. "Yoroi, Tamase, and Sakaki will be the first fireteam. Sakaki, you'll be the flight leader."
"Roger!" Sakaki straightened to attention.
"Mitsurugi, Ayamine, Mikoto and me will be fireteam 2. Sargeant Jinguuji, I want you to command the supply unit."
"Understood!" Marimo and the girls replied in unison.
"1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi, since this is a UN operation and you have submitted yourself to our command structure, I hope you do not find any objections to taking orders from me if necessary." Takeru stared evenly at Tsukuyomi.
"…" Tsukuyomi pursed her lips before nodding. "I understand; what would you have us do?"
"Act as you see fit. I trust your judgment; I only ask that you trust me that the lives of my Platoon are as important as the mission to me." Takeru smiled slightly.
The implication was clear as Tsukuyomi glanced at Meiya briefly. "I shall bear it in mind, just as I hope you keep my primary mission in mind."
"I can work with that, Tsukuyomi-san," Takeru smiled sheepishly and winked at her. All the women in the room groaned, minus Yui who blinked confused at everyone's reaction. Takeru laughed and shrugged. "Alright, that's it for the briefing, everyone to your TSFs, dismissed. Ah, actually, Sakaki, please stay behind for a moment." Takeru crossed his arms, nodding to Chizuru.
"Uh, sure, I-I mean, yes Sir!" Chizuru straightened at attention.
"1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi, I would like to speak with you as well." Meiya looked at Tsukuyomi, who grimaced slightly.
"Of course, Meiya-sama," she bowed low.
"Please meet me outside the PX," Meiya walked out, leaving Tsukuyomi behind.
"1st Lieutenant Takamura, please finish the final preparations without me. I shall join you shortly." Tsukuyomi nodded at Yui who saluted and silently left to do as told.
When everyone left, Takeru stepped up to Chizuru, "so, have you seen your old man?"
Chizuru flinched slightly and looked away. "What if I haven't?"
"Nothing per-say, but keep in mind," Takeru crossed his arms. "My whole family is dead."
Chizuru looked at Takeru, "Shirogane." She looked away quickly, "that's not…" she tried but could not come up with the words.
"I'm not here to judge you Class rep, I'm just saying your father is still there. Better a chance to fix something than to live without ever even having said goodbye." Takeru tapped her shoulder and walked out, leaving Chizuru alone with her thoughts.
Shirogane, why do you always make me doubt myself so easily? Chizuru sighed and put a hand to her heart. She thought of her departed mother. After she died, Chizuru and her father grew distant. It started with him working more and with Chizuru rebelling against him. Chizuru balled her hands into fists. She walked out of the briefing room to her own quarters. She grabbed the still unopened letter given to her and set about finding her father. She found her father in the TSF hangar housing her platoons machines. 2 UN guards were with him as Chizuru approached them, but they stopped her. Chizuru saluted her father as expected, "I am Cadet Sakaki Chizuru requesting to speak with Prime Minister Sakaki."
The soldier gasped slightly before quickly recognizing the familial features. They parted with Sakaki, who turned to his daughter. "Chizuru," Sakaki breathed her name out with a sigh.
"I'm here to return this, Sir!" Chizuru presented the unopened letter to her father. One of the soldiers was about to take it on his behalf when Sakaki stepped up to Chizuru. "Unopened I see," Sakaki almost sounded amused.
Chizuru closed her eyes, then snapped them open, a fire burning behind them. "I think if a father has something important to say. He should say it to his daughter personally."
Sakaki's eyes widened before he smiled slightly. "Yes, I believe you are right."
"Good," Chizuru saluted him and did an about-face. "I," Chizuru started, balling her hands into fists. "I'm glad you're okay…father." She promptly walked towards her TSF. As Chizuru walked away, Ayamine from inside her TSF, watched her go, her eyes locked on the Prime Minister. Ayamine closed her eyes, remembering her father.
"So, you want to be a soldier like your papa?" Shuukaku knelt down to his Ayamine's level. His eyes were kind and oh so very expressive.
"…" Ayamine nodded vigorously.
"Well, I guess every father should be proud that their children want to emulate them." Shuukaku laughed. "Can't say I don't wish it were different, but if you want to serve your country, I want you to always remember this Kei." Shuukaku patted her head lovingly, electing a blush from Ayamine, who leaned into her father's touch. "The People should do what they can for their country, and the country should do what it can for its people." He nodded sagely, "I believe that is how a country should be, with the people and the government working for their mutual benefit."
"I understand," Ayamine raised her little fists up.
"Good," Shuukaku smiled at Ayamine.
"Sir, Prime Minister Sakaki called again; he's asking about your departure." Sagiri, barely old enough to be drafted, saluted Shuukaku.
"Right, that man is a salve driver." Shuukaku stood up and stretched. "he was always a wet blanket in college." Shuukaku grinned and winked at Ayamine.
Ayamine laughed softly like her mother used to do. "Bye-bye papa," Ayamine hugged Shuukaku's midsection.
Shuukaku patted her head lovingly and grinned, "don't forget Naoya."
"Uh, it's okay really," Sagiri blushed, embarrassed, and waved his hands.
Ayamine walked up to Sagiri and looked up at him. Sagiri swallowed a lump in his throat, unsure what to do himself. Then, Sagiri caught a glint in Ayamine's eyes, and she threw a sucker punch right at his gut!
"Guh!" Sagiri doubled over, holding his stomach.
"I'm gonna be Papa's wingman!" Ayamine proclaimed, then ran away to the laughter of her father.
"I-I'm not even an Eishi yet," Sagiri lamented as he uprighted himself and adjusted his glasses.
Ayamine blinked as she felt something wet slide down her cheek. She wiped her face with her palm and sighed. "Let the past go, Kei." Ayamine shook her head and started another systems check-up for her Shiranui.
TSF Hangar 22
Yui and the three girls stopped outside their temporary Hangar. Two American soldiers stood guard outside, with one of them raising a hand between the two parties. "Okay, F-22 maintenance is complete, and all sensitive material has been stowed. You can enter now." The two soldiers stepped aside and stood at attention to let the Royal Guards through.
"愚かなアメリカ人" Kamiyo muttered under her breath.
"Hm?" one of the guards looked at her with a raised brow.
"Pay her no mind. She's merely complimenting you on your dedication to your duties." Yui smiled and waved at the soldiers.
"Uh, thanks, I guess?" The soldiers looked at one another and shrugged.
The doors to the elevator closed, and Yui glared at Kamiyo. "Kamiyo-san, don't antagonize our allies."
"Forgive me; I detest having to ask the Americans for help. I also don't appreciate being told I must wait on the American's graces to enter our assigned Hangar." Kamiyo scowled.
"I understand your feelings. However, this is standard procedure when dealing with sensitive technology. The Americans must do the same for us when we do maintenance on our Takemikazuchis."
The girls looked down, having no answer to that. Yui looked at Kamiyo and sighed. Even among the Royal Guard, who were privy to the American's reasons for retreating, they still held a grudge against them. "Remember, the Americans are our allies in this operation."
"Understood 1st Lieutenant Takamura." The girls replied formally. It was honestly about as good things were gonna be for the time being. With the issue settled, the doors on the elevator finally slid open.
"All personnel on the main floor steer clear. The 66th Tactical Armored Battalion is deploying. I say again, stand clear of the main floor."
Yui walked out with the girls to the loudspeakers blaring. The main door to the Hangar was open, and Yui watched the F-22 Raptors walk out to the tarmac. Huh, is that Raptor using a Type-74 BP blade? Yui watched the last Raptor with the sword on its back walk out of the Hangar. "Takamura-san!" Ebisu called her name, rousing Yui from her thoughts.
"Right, coming!" Yui walked briskly to catch up with the girls.
PX
Takeru walked out into the open, squinting at the setting sun. He searched the horizon and found his intended target. Tsukuyomi and Meiya were standing not too far from the PX. He walked up to them, catching the tail end of their conversation.
"You should have gone and protected her; that is your duty Tsukuyomi!" Meiya seethed through gritted teeth.
Tsukuyomi opened her mouth to respond but shut it close with a click. She looked over Meiya's shoulder, noticing Takeru's approach. "2nd Lieutenant Shirogane," Tsukuyomi greeted him stiffly.
"Takeru," Meiya crossed her arms and averted her gaze from him.
"I don't normally stick my nose into people's business." Takeru raised his hands defensively. "But, if it might impact the mission, I'd like to know about it." Takeru crossed his arms and looked at Meiya. "I assume you asked Tsukuyomi-san why she didn't go defend the Shogun."
"It is her duty as her Highness's personal guard," Meiya muttered.
"Tsukuyomi's also sworn to obey her commands. I'm guessing her last standing order was to protect you, Meiya." Takeru shrugged his shoulders.
"I do not need you to come to my defense," Tsukuyomi glared openly at Takeru.
"Stating the facts hardly counts as defending someone," Takeru raised a brow.
"It matters little," Meiya continued to frown. "I am expendable, my life is not worth wasting the Shogun's personal bodyguards." Meiya looked at the floor.
"M-!" Tsukuyomi began.
"Meiya!" Takeru grabbed Meiya's shoulders, forcefully cutting Tsukuyomi off. "That's enough of that," Takeru said through gritted teeth. "I don't want any talk about anyone's life being expendable," Takeru looked into Meiya's eyes. "Especially your life Meiya."
"Takeru," Meiya looked at Takeru, unsure how to respond.
2nd Lieutenant Shirogane is right," Tsukuyomi bowed her head. "Your life is important to all of us," Tsukuyomi shared a brief look with Takeru.
"Forgive me," Meiya calmed down and put a hand over Takeru's. "I let my emotions get the best of me. I have no excuse for my shameful display before you both."
"It's okay," Takeru sighed, smiling at Meiya, "remember, there are people here who would be very distraught if you died, Meiya."
"Thank you Takeru," Meiya smiled back, then blushed slightly. "Y-you can let go now."
"Right, sorry!" Takeru let Meiya go quickly.
"Thank you for understanding, Meiya-sama," Tsukuyomi's lips pulled up ever so slowly.
"I do not deserve your devotion Tsukuyomi. My behavior does not warrant it, but I thank you nonetheless." Meiya crossed her arms and smiled at Tsukuyomi.
"I'm glad we call see eye to eye," Takeru sighed in relief as the tension ebbed away.
"Well, I best go check on my TSF. It is almost time for our deployment." Meiya nodded to Takeru and walked off.
"Shirogane," Tsukuyomi addressed him after Meiya was out of hearing range.
"Hm?" Takeru crossed his arms and looked at Tsukuyomi.
"I want to ask you a personal question," Tsukuyomi closed her eyes.
Takeru walked up to Tsukuyomi and grabbed her hand, catching her off guard. He brought her hand up between them and stared intently into her eyes. "Please, Tsukuyomi-san, save your love confession until after the mission. I will gladly accept then!"
Tsukuyomi felt her heart flutter, and she pulled her hand back. "Fool!" Tsukuyomi took a step back, "stop with your antics and listen to me Shirogane Takeru." Tsukuyomi crossed her arms regaining her composure. "Shirogane Takeru, what are your thoughts about this rebellion."
Takeru sighed, resting his hands on his hips. "I don't think you'll like the answer."
"I would hear it all the same," Tsukuyomi looked toward the orange-tinted sky.
"I hate it, I'd call it pointless even, but I've also learned that people put a lot of stock in the idea of a nation." Takeru followed Tsukuyomi's gaze at Japan's skyline. "But, when it comes down to it, I guess I'm just a bad Japanese. I don't have any particular pride, and I don't claim to hold lofty ideals about my country." Takeru smiled slightly, "men like Sagiri have this sense of community and belonging, so much to launch this foolhardy rebellion."
"You claim this endeavor foolhardy," Tsukuyomi narrowed her eyes at Takeru. "What right have you to judge people's ideals when you claim to hold none of your own."
"So that justifies killing your countrymen?" Takeru raised a brow at Tsukuyomi. "Because your ideals for our shared nation are different, does that mean I should die so your ideology becomes the norm?"
"So you would prefer to keep the status quo to spare lives, even if it is against the people's wishes?"
"Humans have become masters at justifying violence against their fellow man." Takeru closed his eyes. "So I won't argue whether it's right or wrong to kill someone based on ideals." Takeru shook his head, "because ultimately, we'd just go in circles trying to impose our beliefs onto one another."
"Then you have no answer to my question."
"No, because the answer should be obvious," Takeru turned to Tsukuyomi. "If you die, you only let the opposing ideal remain. I guess if you died holding on to what you believed isn't a bad way to go. But what did that accomplish in the end? Nothing, just a life lost and an idea snuffed out with it." Takeru smiled at Tsukuyomi, "if we are alive, we can always look towards tomorrow. Dying serves no one but one's self."
"A hypothetical for you then, Shirogane Takeru," Tsukuyomi looked at him passively. "What if these events are all being perpetrated by an outside force? All to exert control over the people against their will."
"Not even a question, the BETA come first. Whatever problems we have among ourselves can be sorted out afterward." Takeru shrugged.
"If you believe in dialogue over conflict, would you say the same if the BETA offered us our lives in exchange for our planet?" Tsukuyomi narrowed her eyes.
"No," Takeru shook his head. "I will exterminate the BETA from this planet; I refuse to accept anything less."
"You contradict yourself, Shirogane Takeru," Tsukuyomi tilted her head up and raised a brow.
"Humans tend to do that a lot," Takeru smirked. "fact of the matter is, the loss of life between humanity and the BETA is too significant. So no peace will be garnered there, even if the governments agree. The people would not abide by it, but the Americans aren't the BETA."
Tsukuyomi gasped slightly, then looked away. "So you also suspect their hand in this?"
"Yeah, and I'm willing to deal with another human. After all, your distrust of them comes from their retreat during the invasion, doesn't it?" Takeru frowned, "even though you know they pulled back to save the African Defense Line, and if they hadn't, humanity would have never had the resources to fight back." Takeru scowled, "so let me ask you this Tsukuyomi-san, do you set the value of a human life based on the country they are born?" Takeru shrugged, "to me, Japanese, American, Chinese, it matters little. A human is a human. I will stake my life to save anyone."
"I am a Japanese and a member of the Royal Guard. I have chosen to protect the lives of my countrymen." Tsukuyomi stated.
Takeru stretched his arm out, pointing at her, "and I am a soldier of the United Nations; I swore to protect all mankind, regardless of politics, race, or gender." Takeru smirked, "that is where we differ, Tsukuyomi-san. I see beyond these shores and take humanity's struggles as my own. You have chosen to protect the people around you," Takeru raised his hands. "There is nothing wrong about that. But, for someone like me who's dedicated their whole life to humanity, to be deployed to fight the people he swore to protect."
"This is not the UN's matter; your superiors chose to intervene." Tsukuyomi retorted.
"Where would Japan be now without us?" Takeru countered.
"…" Tsukuyomi pursed her lips.
"I'm not your enemy, Tsukuyomi-san, and though you seemed insistent on it, neither are the American soldiers." Takeru took a step back, ready to leave. "I will make my stance clear, Tsukuyomi-san." Takeru glared at the horizon and the darkening sky. "My mission is to destroy the BETA and protect all those precious to me. This rebellion? It's nothing to me but an obstacle to that goal. So, I say this with all my heart. I will kill anyone who gets in the way of my goal." Takeru glared at the memories of all the losses he had to suffer and the hell of Alternative V's aftermath fresh in his mind. "I'll simply bear the scars on my soul until I meet all those I killed in hell and face their retribution."
"That is a lonely path, Shirogane Takeru." Tsukuyomi sighed and bowed her head. "I must say, I envy you somewhat. To find such convictions in something so simple yet meaningful as love." Tsukuyomi put a hand to her heart. "However, I love this country and its people. I cannot simply ignore their suffering, nor can I ignore that which is in their hearts."
"Tsukuyomi-san," Takeru walked up to her. "Then, let's make a deal here and now." Takeru offered up his hand. "Let's end this rebellion, and afterward, let's have some tea together."
"To what end?" Tsukuyomi raised her brow.
"Because I want to do something I wish I'd done before." Takeru smiled and shrugged, "I want to understand what makes you such a passionate and driven woman, Tsukuyomi-san."
Tsukuyomi blinked, eyes wide. "You mock me at your own peril Shirogane Takeru."
"I mean it, Tsukuyomi-san," Takeru's eyes bore into hers.
Tsukuyomi felt her heart start to race. "F-fine," Tsukuyomi coughed to hide her stutter and regain her composure. "I shall agree to your terms if you agree to share your convictions with me." Tsukuyomi smirked, "I wish to know what kind of man Meiya-sama finds worthy of her friendship."
"Deal," Takeru shook Tsukuyomi's hand, "I guess this will be our first date." Takeru grinned.
"D-date?" Tsukuyomi blushed. "I-I agreed to no such thing!"
"Too late," Takeru took his hand back. "We already shook hands, we are both honored bound to our first date Tsukuyomi-san!"
"Fool, unbind us this instance!" Tsukuyomi protested, raising her fist between them.
"Come now, it's unbecoming of a Royal Guard to go back on her word, you know?" Takeru crossed his arms.
"Geh," Tsukuyomi stepped back as if Takeru had slapped her. She glared at Takeru, her face red with embarrassment. "F-fine, call it what you wish!" Tsukuyomi sighed, "honestly, you are a confounding individual, Shirogane Takeru."
"Huh, I just noticed something," Takeru smirked. "You've been calling me by my name."
"That's, well, a slip of the tongue is all," Tsukuyomi turned from him, hiding her red face.
"You also let me call you Tsukuyomi-san without correcting me. I must have grown on you, Tsukuyomi-san."
"Dispell the notion," Tsukuyomi demanded, "I simply respect Meiya-samas wishes!"
"Sure, sure," Takeru raised his hands in defense. "Anyway, let's do our best, 1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi!" Takeru straightened and saluted her.
"You really are a strange man, 2nd Lieutenant Shirogane." Tsukuyomi saluted him, and Takeru took his leave.
Watching him walk away, Tsukuyomi put a hand over her chest. She felt her heart thumping against her ribcage rapidly. I can't believe I let him get to me like this. Maya must be laughing at me from her Highnesses side.
Odawara West Interchange
Takeru's Shiranui finished arming up. He loaded up his TSF in a commanders-type load-out. A Type-74 BP Sword, 2 knives, and 2 autocannons. "Alright, everyone set?"
"Ready!" the girls sounded off.
"Alright, once we reach Tougashima, Sakaki will take the west wing, and my team will take the east. 1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi, please guard the center." Takeru ignited his jump jets and flew up.
"Understood, Blood squadron arrowhead 01 formation, let's go!" Tsukuyomi's crimson Takemikazuchi blasted off, followed by Yui's golden one and the three girls in their white TSFs.
"Oi," Takeru glared at his display. "Who came up with our unit name?"
"Huh, it was assigned to us?" Marimo's face came up on Takeru's display.
"That's a mouthful," Takeru rolled his eyes, "I mean 207 00? I'm updating our unit name."
"2nd Lieutenant, you're not supposed to do that mid-operation!" Marimo sighed exasperatedly.
"It's fine; you worry too much, Sargeant," Takeru grinned, replacing the unit name. "We are now acting under the 207th Tactical 'Dragon' Platoon. Assume no change to number designations; updating data link now." Takeru saw the stacked unit cards on the left side of his display change to 'Dragon.' "Alright, Dragon platoon arrowhead 01 formation let's go!" Takeru blasted off, and the girls fell in order to his flanks.
The operation was now in its first two hours. Takeru leaned back on his cockpit, sighing. "Once I deliver this package, I'll ask for a sortie order to Tokyo. The Sagiri I remembered always fought with his men front and center. Tch, someone that talented, should be fighting the BETA. Damn it, why couldn't it be different!" Takeru tightened his grip on his controls. "I really didn't want to kill more people." Takeru gritted his teeth, I do what I must, but damn it I don't like it one bit.
"Dragon 02 to Dragon 01, all's clear on the western front," Chizuru said with a sardonic smile.
Takeru felt his lips pull up slightly, "roger, report again on the hour."
"Understood, Dragon 02 out." Chizuru's frame retracted to Takeru's Dragon stack on his left. All's quiet, huh? Maybe it's too much to hope for. But I wish we could resolve this peacefully.
Tokyo Royal Palace outskirts
Private Yoshida Toru tapped his heel repeatedly and shifted his eyes nervously. Then, he adjusted the strap of his missile launcher and looked nervously at his comrades. For my family, for my family, Toru repeated the mantra in his head. Finally, Toru unslung the missile launcher and walked past his comrades.
"Yoshida, what are you doing?" Ito, Toru's friend, approached from behind.
For my family
A gunshot rang out, and Ito fell back dead, bleeding from his head. Toru rushed forward, past a stationary APC, and fired his missile launcher at a black Takemikazuchi. The unguided missile caught the Eishi unaware as it exploded against the cockpit block. There was a moment of utter shock before the TSF toppled over on its back. Machinegun fire erupted as Toru climbed atop the nearby APC and fired the mounted 50 Caliber gun. The rest of the Royal Guard Squadron moved to stand in front of their fallen comrade.
"Yoshida, cease fire, cease fire!" Sargeant Kouta shouted at the soldier. The Sargeant then noticed the dead body of another of his men. "Yoshida, I order you to cease fire!" The Sargeant raised his rifle at him. "Yoshida!" The sergeant squeezed the trigger executing Yoshida.
For a brief moment, Kouta felt relief. Until the sound of another missile swooshing past him made him snap his head left. The missile was shot from the sky by one of the Royal Guard TSF. The TSFs then turned their guns on the rebels. Kouta pursed his lips and closed his eyes. "Shit."
Tougashima Fortress
Takeru narrowed his eyes, turning his TSF eastward. For the past 3 hours, the flashes of weapon discharges on mass had been going on. "Dragon 00, any update from Command?"
Marimo appeared on Takeru's display. "Negative; all fighting is currently within the capital, but our forces and the Royal Guard are holding steady." Marimo closed her eyes in thought. "I think Command would sooner send reinforcements from Yokosuka than move any of us."
"Roger, keep me posted then," Takeru nodded, and Marimo offered a small smile as she cut the transmission.
"Dragon 01, this is Dragon 03; your shift is over." Meiya's portrait showed up in Takeru's display. Her face was all business, and he wondered how she was holding up in all of this.
"Meiya," Takeru breathed her name.
"Yes?" Meiya seemed to be staring past him at the fortress.
"After this battle, I want to go back to the hill with you." Takeru smiled slightly, assuming I don't expose the darkness inside me in this battle.
The words caught Meiya's attention, and she looked at Takeru. "Takeru," Meiya sighed, the corners of her mouth quirking upward. "I'd like that. Now get some rest, okay?"
"Understood, I'm gonna take some fresh air," Takeru cut the comms and opened his cockpit. The winter winds cooled his exposed face instantly. Takeru grabbed the boarding cable and repelled down to the ground. He checked his sidearm strapped to his thigh and a knife on his lower back.
What a damn mess, fighting in the capital, and my supposed package hasn't shown up. I'm tempted to get a priority transmission to Yuuko Sensei. Takeru walked up the path leading to a shrine. The last time he was here was as a child in his old world. Those memories seem so distant they are almost like a dream. The old me never really appreciated the peace afforded to me. My entire world was the bubble I lived in. Takeru turned and leaned on a nearby Torii gate. Meiya, if you end up seeing the darkness within, would you look at me differently? You will probably think I'm a monster. The Dragon of the West, a title soaked in blood given to me by my enemies. The fact that I called our platoon Dragon shows how I've resigned myself to it.
Snap
Takeru pushed off the Torii gate taking cover behind it, and drew his sidearm. "What the hell was that?" Takeru reached up to his headset, connecting to his TSF, and used its infrared sensors. His Shiranui closed its cockpit and tilted its head down scanning the forest nearby. After a few seconds, it picked up two heat signatures. Civilians? Nah, not this far out; maybe it's my objective. Takeru pursed his lips and jogged into the forest to intercept the unknown contacts. He rounded their position as he tracked them with his TSF. Finally, he came through tall shrubbery and aimed his gun into the darkened forest. "Freeze!"
"!" The two figures gasped, one covering the other with their body.
"You are interfering in a UN operation; come forward and identify yourself," Takeru spoke loudly and clearly. Then, he reached for his headset, contacting Meiya, "Dragon 01 to Dragon 03, I got, huh?" The transmission instantly turned to static. What the hell?
"Fall!" the snow to Takeru's left erupted as a woman fired a pistol at him.
"Fuck!" Takeru cursed, feeling bullets impact his suit before he dove through the shrubs firing at his attacker. She hid her heat signature under the snow!?
"Wait!" A soft yet firm voice called out.
The woman drove through the shrub, pointing her gun at Takeru's head. Takeru's hand lashed out, grabbing the barrel and putting his pinkie behind the sights stopping the hammer from moving. The woman wore a cloak, but Takeru could tell she was wearing a fortified suit beneath it. Takeru swung his other arm up to aim at her head. The woman blocked his swing, and Takeru bucked her off by pushing against the snowy ground. He twisted the gun out of her hand as she rolled off and leveled his gun. The woman rolled and threw a sweeping kick knocking the gun out of Takeru's hand. Takeru scrambled to his feet, drew his combat knife in a reverse grip, and attacked the woman. The woman drew a tanto of all things, and their blades clashed in a series of swipes.
"Damn, rebel, how the hell did you get here?" Takeru seethed as he slowly gave ground to the woman's attacks. Shit, she's good, better than Ayamine!
"You dare insult me!" The woman declared indignant, and she pushed forward. Takeru threw a horizontal cut, and the woman ducked beneath his swing and brought her hand, pushing his outstretched arm further.
Shit! Takeru gritted his teeth. The woman pulled back her tanto for a stab at his face. No choice; I have to use that technique! Takeru fell back and hooked his leg behind the woman's knee, bringing her down. Takeru slid his arm under her hand and curled it next to his face blocking her stab just in time. He pushed her off, and both scrambled to their feet. Here it goes, shock and awe! Takeru rushed forward in a low stance, arms curled up at his sides, protecting his face. The woman drew up her tanto, putting her open palm against the pommel, and stepped into a stab meant for his head. Now! Takeru stopped and drew up at the last second. The stab hit his chest harmlessly, absorbed by his fortified suit. Takeru lowered his hands, grabbing both her wrists. Then he pulled them apart and stepped forward! The woman's eyes widened as Takeru planted his cold lips against hers!
The tanto slipped from her grasp as her entire body slacked. Takeru pulled back fast, let go of one arm, and ducked beneath the other, bringing her arm around to lock it firmly behind her. He pushed on the back of her knee, bringing her down. Holy shit, I can't believe that worked! If I ever meet Matsukaze this time around, I'm gonna buy that man all the drinks he wants! "Damn, you are a hell of a fighter." Takeru finally got a good look at the woman. She had long, flowing blueish hair, and her green-eyed glare seemed very familiar, even if he could only see her profile. Takeru drew his blade and placed it beneath her throat. "I subdued your comrade; come out immediately!"
"Very well, but please do not harm Captain Tsukuyomi; she was merely doing her duty as my protector."
Wait, that voice there's no way! Takeru watched with bated breath as Yuuhi walked around a tree to meet him. But wait, then that means! Takeru instantly let go of Maya and stepped back. "S-sorry, I didn't mean to!" Takeru panicked before he straightened at attention before Yuuhi. "I am Shirogane Takeru, 2nd Lieutenant, 207th Tactical Platoon, UN 11th Forces!" Takeru saluted, and he would forever curse his muscle memory as his mouth involuntarily opened. "I also liked mature curvy women!" What!? Did I seriously just let that slip!? Takeru looked at Yuuhi, whose eyebrows shot up for a brief second. Then her face broke into a smile as her lovely lips parted, and the sweet sound of her laugh brought out a memory he did not recall.
"Takeru-sama," Yuuhi covered her mouth with her hand. She was sitting on a rug with Takeru lying on her lap. Takeru grinned as he reached up, cupping her cheek. Yuuhi leaned into his palm before leaning down. Takeru pushed off his elbows and met her halfway in a chaste kiss.
Takeru blinked the memory away as his heart twisted with emotion. "Yuuhi," Takeru breathed out her name with raw feelings.
"How dare you address her Highness so casually!" an older woman stepped between Takeru and Yuuhi.
"Sorry!" Takeru coughed awkwardly into his fist. "Anyway, Captain Tsukuyomi, are you the one jamming my signal?"
"Actually, that would be me Shirogane-kun, hohoho."
Takeru instantly felt annoyed as the voice reached his ears. Yoroi walked into view, holding a device in his hand. "I'm here to deliver the heart of Japan into the UN's hands. But who would have thought you'd be chosen as its caretaker Shirogane-kun." Yoroi grinned cheekily.
"If you knew there was a UN unit here, why didn't you step in before Captain Tsukuyomi shot at me!" Takeru glared at the older man.
"Hohoho, I wanted to see you in action, Shirogane-kun. I need to know my son-in-law can protect my tomboyish daughter." Yoroi adjusted his trenchcoat, smirking at Takeru.
"You're a real piece of work, you know that old man?" Takeru glared at the older man. "Now, can you turn that off? I need to report before my platoon swarms this place."
"Not yet. First, we must speak privately, Shirogane-kun," Yoroi nodded.
"About?"
"Your mission," Maya pulled out some glasses and donned them.
"I'm afraid I must impose on you to get to Yokohoma Base 2nd Lieutenant Shirogane." Yuuhi bowed her head politely.
"I was already aware I had to escort her Highness to Yokohoma." Takeru nodded.
"I'm afraid the situation changed. To stop the fighting in the Captial, her Highness has leaked her escape to the rebels." Maya explained. "As we speak, rebel forces have probably already broken away from the UN and American forces engaging them."
"Then taking our original route back is no longer an option." Takeru sighed.
"Forgive me. I could think of nothing else to stop the fighting in the capital." Yuuhi closed her eyes sadly.
"It's no trouble to me Yuuhi, er, I mean your Highness." Takeru quickly corrected himself.
"Is this man really the best the UN can do?" Maya glared at Takeru.
"Look, I'm a soldier, alright. I kill BETA, not host tea parties." Takeru crossed his arms, looking away from them.
"I believe you can vouch for Shirogane-kun's skills, Captain?" Yoroi grinned at her.
Takeru made eye contact with Maya. She glared, looking away and blushing. "Y-yes, I suppose I have."
"Anyways, we're wasting time. Bring down the jammer," Takeru put his hand on his headset
As soon as yoroi brought it down, 6 girls shouted his name in his ear.
"Takeru!" The girls shouted
"Shirogane!" Marimo, of course, used his last name.
Takeru flinched closing one eye, "sorry about that, ran into some trouble." Takeru activated his slave system and marched his TSF to his position. "I encountered some unknown contacts while I was outside my TSF. I investigated and have identified them as Shogun Koubuin Yuuhi, her Chamberlain, and Captain Tsukuyomi of the Royal Guard." Takeru watched Yoroi put a finger to his lips to ask him for his silence on his appearance.
"What!?" Everyone shouted in unison.
Takeru flinched again, "I know, but could you stop shouting in my ear?" Takeru sighed, "I'm going to take the Shogun into my TSF, Dragon 00 contact Command, and ask what they want us to do."
"I would think it obvious they would want us to bring her Highness to Yokohoma Base!" Meiya interrupted.
"Regardless, we have to contact Command, everyone group up on me. Then, we're gonna form up on my TSF and keep the Shogun safe." Takeru ordered.
"Understood!" The girls replied.
"Dragon 01, I want to remain with the supply unit to coordinate our next step," Marimo spoke up.
"Roger Dragon 00, keep me posted; Dragon 01 out." Takeru nodded to Yuuhi and noticed she wasn't wearing a fortified suit. She was in plain civilian clothing. "That's gonna complicate things," Takeru crossed his arms and then looked at Maya.
"W-what?" She still couldn't look Takeru in the eyes as she turned away. "Captain, I think you won't need that fortified suit."
"Geh!" Maya blushed beet red and covered her chest, looking at Takeru horrified.
"Hohoho, Shirogane-kun, I don't think now is the time to indulge in your proclivities," Yoroi smirked.
"No!" Takeru groaned and rolled his eyes, "I'm not some kind of pervert you know!" Takeru glared at Maya and Yoroi, "I mean, since her Highness is going to be riding in my TSF, Maya should let her use her fortified suit."
"Good thinking. I'm surprised he thought of that," the chamberlain looked at Takeru, shocked.
"Oi," Takeru sighed before slacking his shoulders in defeat. "Come on, let's just get this over with.
Yuuhi once again graced Takeru with a smile and a soft laugh behind her fist. "You are everything 1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi describes you as, 2nd Lieutenant Shirogane."
"R-right," Takeru blushed and coughed into his fist. "Please change quickly; I'll start setting up the harness." Takeru walked towards his TSF smiling as he did so. I really missed seeing you, Yuuhi.
Almost 30 minutes later, Takeru, with Yuuhi safely inside his TSF wearing Maya's suit, awaited further instructions. "You're not too uncomfortable, are you Yu-I mean your Highness."
"2nd Lieutenant Shirogane, if it pleases you, call me by my name if it eases your mind." Yuuhi tilted her head down slightly, giving her permission.
"Don't mind if I do!" Takeru said, breathing out in relief. "Meiya likes that I call her by her first name too." Takeru clamped his mouth shut too late.
"I see you are aware of my sister," Yuuhi smiled sadly. "As I recall, she is part of this unit, is she not?"
"Y-yeah, she's callsign Dragon 03," Takeru nodded, hating himself for bringing down the mood.
Yuuhi smiled, looking ahead, "I should have known she would not accept it."
Takeru thought of the Takemikazuchi gathering dust back at Yokohoma. "She is one stubborn woman," Takeru smiled fondly.
Yuuhi looked at Takeru's expression and was immediately glad Meiya had found someone she could trust.
Takeru frowned, "finally got an update on the situation; please give me a moment to hear the briefing."
"2nd Lieutenant," Yuuhi started.
"Takeru, please, it only seems right if I get to call you Yuuhi," Takeru winked at her and smiled.
"Then please, Takeru-sama, let me listen in."
Takeru looked at her briefly and nodded. Then, he linked her headset to allow her to listen but not speak. Finally, Marimo's portrait came alive on his display, and the briefing began. "Command has finally given us new orders. We are to escort her Highness back to Yokohoma Base." Marimo stated the obvious, then a screen on everyone's display popped up a map. The map zoomed out to show Yokohoma Base, Tokyo, and Atsugi Base. "A sizeable enough force has disengaged from Tokyo. That force is currently heading towards our location. That said, the force has splintered into 3 echelons. Additionally, we have lost contact with Atsugi Base." The map showed a red arrow flying out of Tokyo before splitting into 3 arrows. One arrow labeled E1 flew straight toward Tougashima, while the other 2 flanked north and south, respectively. "E2 is heading north along highway 413, while E3 flies south along the Tokaido Shinkansen rail line." E2 and E3 flew along their projected routes.
"They don't know where the Shogun is," Takeru hummed.
"Command agrees with this assessment," Marimo nodded. "Luckily, E3 will be intercepted soon by a special unit from Yokohoma."
Takeru smirked. Give em hell Valkyries.
"the 100th Atsugi Tactical Armored Battalion will intercept E1 and E2 respectively. Their job will be to slow down or stop E1 and E2 if they can." Marimo nodded as the map updated with 3 blue arrows, 2 deploying from Edina and the other from the Interchange. While the last one, simply labeled A-01, deployed from Yokohoma. "Now, on to our escape route. We will be traveling southwest along the remains of the New Atami road until we reach the Izu Skyline." The map updated, showing an arrow labeled 207th Tactical 'Dragon' Platoon heading along the Atami road. "We suspect once we start moving, our enemies will deduce we are the most likely unit carrying the Shogun. E2 will immediately move to the Ashinoko Skyline to keep us from going north. It is also possible E1 will try to catch up and follow us on the Izu skyline." The map showed the 3 Echolons bypassing the 100th and A-01 units to their predicted routes. "E3 will more than likely continue their track along the shoreline to keep us boxed in. Thankfully, the American 108th Tactical Armored Battalion will cover our retreat once we get closer to Izu."
"Thank god for that," Takeru grinned. Then, the map moved south towards Izu, showing the 108th fly past the 207th to intercept E1.
"At this point, we believe E2 will coordinate with E3 to catch us in a pincer maneuver. E2 will likely go through the ruins of Nakaizu to intercept us, and E2 will diver north at Atami." The map showed E2 and E3 turn to intercept the 207th. "Their best bet to catch us will be to use the old Heikawa tollbooth as a chokepoint." The map zoomed in on the designated area, followed by E2 and E3 converging on the site. "If we can clear this chokepoint, our retreat will be much simpler. After that, we will fly into the mountains near MT Togasa and make for old Shimoda City. Whether the enemy chooses to pursue won't matter, as the UN's Yokosuka 209th Tactical Armored Battalion will be waiting for them at old Shimoda." The map showed the 209th waiting at Shimoda. "Finally, we will rendezvous with the UN's 11th fleet and return to Yokohoma by sea."
"If only I had been able to stop this," Yuuhi whispered to herself. Takeru glanced at her, and his heart went out to her. Don't worry Yuuhi. If we can get you to Yokohoma, the rebels will lose their vital cause, and we can end this rebellion once and for all.
"2nd Lieutenant Shirogane, I suggest we fly in arrowhead 03 formation, and 1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi's 19th Flight flies in Hammerhead 01 to further reinforce our rearguard." Marimo brought up their units in the proverbial formation.
"Tsukuyomi-san is here?" Yuuhi perked up and looked at Takeru.
"Good thinking Sargeant Jinguuji; we will follow your suggestion," Takeru smirked.
"Alright, this is it, 207th Dragon platoon. I want you to do whatever it takes to complete your mission. After all, your mission is now to save the heart of Japan!" Takeru gritted his teeth and scowled. "But that's bullshit!"
"!" Everyone gasped at Takeru's words. Yuuhi looked up at Takeru.
"I didn't work my ass off to have you die here in a goddamn civil war with humans! None of you have my permission to die!" Takeru bared his teeth. "I only fly with the best and demand the impossible! If you don't think you're good enough, the moment the rebels show their face feel free to lay down your weapons and beg for mercy!" Takeru crushed the air with his fist. "I'll finish this damn mission alone if I have to. I'll carve a damn path through anything that gets in my way! So you better keep up!"
The girls all looked at Takeru, speechless; this was a new side of him. This was the true Takeru on the battlefield. The one they only caught a glimpse of in training. Chizuru gripped her controls and was the first to recover. "Well, you heard the man; sound off!" Chizuru barked.
"Yes, Sir!" The girls and even Marimo sounded off smartly. While Tsukuyomi and Yui smiled at the incredulous words of Shirogane Takeru.
The 207th Platoon and 19th Independent Flight ignited their jump jets and flew off to save Japan.
Damn, this chapter was starting to get big, so I decided to split it. Sorry again for the lack of action. Next chapter, you're gonna get some of the meetings you've been waiting for! Other meetings are still to come. Not to mention we'll get down to the needy-greedy of the rebellion forces duking it out with UN and US forces.
By the way, nice catch on the Ghoda cameo, lol. I have a soft spot for him and his terrible luck with women. While Takeru is a love nucleus, my poor man Ghoda is a love repellant! But I digress, enjoy the chapter, and let me know what you think about it.
