Chapter 8: Zero Hour

December 5, 2001

100th Atsugi Armored Battalion

"They're already here!" Shiro barked as he flew back, firing his autocannon at the rebel TSFs. His Squadron fell back in a crescent formation while the rebels took an aggressive Arrowhead formation. The rebel TSFs seemed to glide between Shiro's Squadron firing lines. "God damn it, we have the same specs. How the hell are they avoiding us so easily!"

"AAGH!" A scream reverberated in Shiro's ear as another of his comrades went down.

"Sword 04! Shit, it's just you and me Sword 03; move into, AAGH!" Shiro gasped, feeling his heart drop to his stomach. His TSF slid along the ground to a stop. He turned to his comrades and found himself alone among enemies. Shiro saw Sword 01 kneeling on the ground as a rebel kicked the TSF off its sword.

"Shit," Shiro gripped his controls before he rushed forward. "God damn it!" He shouted, firing his autocannon at the first rebel in front of him. The rebel charged back at Shiro, dodging his fire expertly with a sword drawn. Then, at the last second, the rebel pilot knelt, sliding along the ground, and cut Shiro's TSF in half at the hip. Shiro's TSF fell face-first, sliding against the ground before exploding.

"How many more of our countrymen must die before we achieve our goal." The rebel pilot who finished Shiro gritted her teeth.

"Have strength; the Shogun lies before us. If we can rescue her, we can end this once and for all." Her compatriot flew close. His TSF put its manipulator on her TSF's shoulder.

"Right, let's rescue her highness from the American dogs!" She reaffirmed her convictions, and they reformed their squadrons flying after the 207th.

207th Tactical 'Dragon' Platoon

"You gotta be shitting me!" Takeru glared at the map as he saw the last of their rearguard fall to E1. "Attention, the 100th is down. I say again, the 100th is down!" Takeru pursed his lips and closed his eyes momentarily.

"Already?" Chizuru's voice came over the radio. The rest of the girls did not respond, choosing to focus on flying.

"…" Yuuhi's face remained passive, but after spending 20 years with her, Takeru could tell when she was hurt. She would train her face into practiced aloofness and straighten her back. She would project the aura of 'The Shogun' and allow herself only a brief closing of her eyes and an exhale of threw her lips.

"It's okay to be sad," Takeru blurted after a few seconds of silence.

"Please, do not concern yourself with me, Takeru-sama. I shall manage as I always have.

Takeru shifted his eyes down for a second before nodding. "We're switching to combat speed, everyone stray at NOE flight level." Takeru pressed on the pedals, igniting his jump jets and pushing his Shiranui faster.

"Roger!" the girls replied and immediately sped up with him. They flew along for another 10 minutes, watching E1 inch closer on the map.

WARNING

The alarm blared in Takeru's cockpit, and he watched as multiple yellow dots appeared north of E1. To say they were hauling ass was an understatement. So, E2 makes its appearance, Takeru thought. Then Takeru's radio started receiving a transmission. "Attention UN forces, we mean you no harm. You are intervening in an internal matter of Japan. Cease all combat operations, and return the Shogun to the Japanese people. Upon her return, we will escort you back to your Base."

"Takeru-sama," Yuuhi looked up at him, her resolve clear in her eyes.

Takeru smirked, then winked at Yuuhi. Hell, like it matters if they know we have her or not. We're the only unit actively fleeing combat and have a Royal Guard escort. "Attention rebel forces, you're asking me to give up having a beautiful woman sitting on my lap. I cannot comply, I say again, I cannot comply."

"…" the rebel was quiet for a few seconds, but Takeru could practically hear the Eishi swallow their anger. "Identify yourself Eishi."

"2nd Lieutenant Shirogane, UN 11th Forces," Takeru looked down at Yuuhi, who stared back, shocked.

"Are you confirming her Highness is unlawfully in your possession?"

"Yes, but she won't be in my possession unlawfully for long," Takeru grinned, making sure his entire Flight and Royal Guards were listening. This ought to help you guys relax, though I can't help but know this is gonna bite me in the ass when it's all set and done.

"Are you ready to comply and return, her Highness?" The rebel sounded genuinely shocked.

"Nope," Takeru said with a pop.

"Then what are your intentions," The rebel Eishi said through gritted teeth.

"Since you insist, I'm taking Yuuhi to a temple to elope. Please keep it to yourself though; it's supposed to be a secret."

"You UN scum!" The rebel shouted.

"T-Takeru-sama!" Yuuhi gasped, placing her hands over her chest, as she looked at Takeru, her face tinged the loveliest shade of pink in Takeru's opinion.

"WHAT!?" His entire Flight and the Royal Guard shouted over the comms making Takeru flinch.

"Now if you excuse me, you're interrupting my private time with Yuuhi," Takeru cut the transmission before the rebel Eishi could bluster at him.

"Shirogane," Tsukuyomi's portrait showed up on his display. "I hope you understand you will have to pay for your words."

"Sorry, 1st Lieutenant, I couldn't help messing with them. I'll make it up to you on our date," Takeru smirked.

"DATE!?" The girls all shouted.

"Tsukuyomi, what is the meaning of this?" Meiya spoke up.

"N-no, please don't misunderstand; it is not what you think!" Tsukuyomi instantly blushed red and tried defending herself.

"1st Lieutenant, I didn't know you had feelings for 2nd Lieutenant Shirogane," Yui spoke up bewildered.

"1st Lieutenant Takamura, not you too!" Tsukuyomi gasped with betrayal in her voice.

"The 1st Lieutenant would never like a womanizer like him!" Kamiyo suddenly butted in.

"Never!" Ebisu and Tomoe adamantly insisted.

"That's not the point!" Tsukuyomi butted back in.

"Ahahaha!"

"!" Everyone gasped, shocked as the soft laughter filled the airwaves. Takeru felt his lips pull up in a smile as he spared Yuuhi a glance. She was covering her mouth to try and cover the laugh that escaped her.

"That's much better," Takeru sighed, content with his work.

The girls all suddenly realized what Takeru had done. The nerves that had been building inside of them had been forgotten. Chizuru looked at Takeru's portrait on her display, her mouth slightly agape. Chizuru sighed, smiling as she did so. I can't believe I've fallen for such a man.

"Let's focus back on the mission," Marimo finally spoke up. You have the makings of a great leader Shirogane. Marimo thought privately.

"Roger!" Takeru sounded off, his face set into a determined stare. The girls followed suit, and when the mood was once tense, now it was replaced by a sharp focus. They flew for another 30 minutes, keeping an eye on their pursuers.

WARNING

Takeru clicked his tongue as several new contacts appeared ahead of them. "Stay sharp, unknowns ahead, be ready to fight your way through!" Takeru looked down at Yuuhi, "things could get ugly, so prepare to brace for combat maneuvers."

"Please do not worry about me," Yuuhi nodded firmly at Takeru.

The unknown force drew into an effective firing range. Takeru aimed to lock on for good measure.

"Oi, watch who you're shooting, you assholes!"

The English retort made Takeru smirk, and he removed the lock on. "Just making sure you're awake!" Takeru replied. As the Americans flew closer, their IFF was registered on the data link labeling them as the 66th Tactical 'Hunter' Armored Battalion.

"cheeky son of a bitch," the American Surface Pilot laughed over the radio. "Now keep going; we'll let your admirers know you ain't interested!"

"Thanks, they didn't get the hint when we hauled ass away from them!" Takeru chuckled as the American Squadron of F-15 Strike Eagles screamed past the 207th Platoon.

66th Tactical 'Hunter' Armored Battalion 112th Alpha Squadron

The pursuing E1 rebels cursed as they screamed to a stop leveling autocannons at the Americans. The lead rebel transmitted instantly. "アメリカの船に注意してください、戦闘活動を直ちに中止してください。繰り返しますが、直ちに戦闘活動を中止してください。"

The Strike Eagle Surface Pilot sucked in air through his clenched teeth and narrowed his eyes. "Attention unidentified craft: follow UN military protocol and transmit in English, or enable your real-time translator. Follow the official international language." The American TSFs raised their AMWS-21 autocannons matching the threatening stance of the rebel TSFs.

"あなたは国家的に重要な内政に干渉しています。直ちに戦闘活動を停止するよう要求します!" The rebel forces transmitted again as soon as the words left the American Surface Pilot's mouth.

"I say again, transmit in English the international-" The American Surface Pilot started.

"アメリカ軍に注意:英語はたわごとを食べることができます。繰り返しますが、英語はたわごとを食べることができます。" The rebel lead Eishi cut him off, his tone insulting in nature.

"What?" The Surface Pilot's Strike Eagle raised their head from their autocannon. As soon as he did, the rebel's lead units charged.

"What are you cowards doing back in Japan? Drop something on your way out the door?" The rebel lead Eishi rushed the Strike Eagles, finally transmitting in English. The rebel swung at the lead TSF, but the Strike Eagle outclassed the Shiranui in speed.

The Strike Eagle boosted left and opened fire with its 36mm autocannon. The rebel flew up, aiming its autocannon. The Strike Eagle booster jumped back before shooting a 120mm armor-piercing shell through the rebel's cockpit. The Shiranui was blasted away as the back of the cockpit block exploded outward in fire and shrapnel. "Asshole," The American Surface Pilot clicked his tongue and rushed headlong into the rebel attacking squadrons. "Arrowhead 1 formation, let's go!" The Surface Pilot barked as the Strike Eagles formed up at his flanks.

"Those are Strike Eagles, don't let 'em' get close. Instead, assume wing 03 formation; we'll encircle them and wipe them out!" One of the rebel Squadron leaders ordered as he flew back, dodging incoming fire.

"Roger!" The second Rebel Squadron commander acknowledged as they formed into two inward crescents. The two crescents next to one another reflected the wings for which the formation was named.

"Shit, they're gonna surround us; keep it tight!" The Surface Pilot barked. The opposing force flew at one another, exchanging fire.

Then, to the rebel's shock, their left-wing immediately came under fire from the north. Two TSFs fell to 36mm fire before the rebels broke formation.

"Were taking fire from the north!" A rebel Eishi turned to return fire before a 120mm armor-piercing shell blew out her cockpit block.

"What? There's nothing on the radar, AAAHH!" The Eishi screamed as his TSF was torn to shreds by 36mm fire.

"I-I see them; it's the American's new model, the F-22 Raptor!" A woman rebel Eishi yelled, fear in her voice. Then, from the ridge line to the north, a single F-22 Raptor flew straight at the rebels before three more flew from behind the lead TSF to engage the rebels in CQC.

"All units scatter; try to pincer them!" The right-wing commander ordered! But it was too late as they closed in for the kill. The 4 Raptors drove through the scrambling rebels, shredding them piecemeal.

"How…we're the Captial, geh!" The left-wing commander turned and swung his blade, hitting the air. What!? The commander gaped, and his Shiranui turned its head. The Raptor had been faster and flew under the sword swipe. The Raptor fired a 120mm armor-piercing shell through the rebel's back. The Shiranui's cockpit block exploded outward as it crashed onto the forest ground.

The Raptor hovered gently down to the ground rearing its autocannon over their shoulder. "All units, give me a status report."

"Spike 02, all green."

"Spike 03, no problem."

"Spike 04, A-okay."

"Outstanding, we got more insurgents coming this way; let's show 'em how Uncle Sam does it." Spike 01 smirked as the Raptor 'Spike' Flight moved to assist the Strike Eagle Squadron.

207th Tactical 'Dragon' Platoon

Takeru smiled as he watched E1 grind to a halt in their pursuit. "God bless the Americans and their big ass wallet."

"You seem fond of the Americans Takeru-sama," Yuuhi observed.

"Served with them on the front line, whatever their government is, their Surface Pilots are okay in my book." Takeru shrugged with a grin. I guess we get to meet again, Major Walken, Takeru thought of the older American man.

"That is good to hear," Yuuhi smiled kindly. "For Japan to stand against the BETA, we must form strong bonds with other nations." Yuuhi looked at her folded hands over he lap. "I'm glad there are people like you, Takeru-sama. People who want to believe we can all work together despite our differences."

"For humanity to stand against the BETA, we have to learn to work together." Takeru frowned, his hands tightening around his controls. "I hope we can end this rebellion quick," Takeru sighed, giving Yuuhi a sheepish smile. "By the way, sorry about what I said to the rebels. I was trying to get my team to lighten up."

"O-oh," Yuuhi shook her head, her cheeks tinged pink slightly. "Think nothing of it. It certainly eased my mind as well."

"I'm glad. Seeing you smile makes me feel at ease too," Takeru shrugged nonchalantly. Yuuhi felt her lips quirk upward and nodded her thanks.

"This is Hunter 01 to the 207th Tactical Platoon, respond."

Takeru recognized the deep and surprisingly good Japanese-speaking voice instantly. "This is Dragon 01 of the 207th Tactical Platoon. We read you Hunter 01." Takeru smiled at the portrait of Major Walken on his display.

"Copy, continue on your current course while I update you on the situation." Major Walken transmitted his Battalion's location to the 207th.

"Understood, please proceed Major Walken," Takeru nodded at the portrait of the American man.

"You will rendezvous with us at Kameishi Pass where you'll refuel."

Damn, hope we have time for that.

"We have reports of further reinforcements being deployed to aid the insurgents. So once we finish refueling, Bravo Squadron will begin to cede ground in a delaying action. That should buy us enough time to avoid the chokepoint."

"Understood; we'll be reaching your location soon!" Takeru nodded and gripped his controls.

"Roger, Hunter 01 out," Alfred cut communications promptly.

"All Dragon and Blood elements, the 66th is waiting for us at Kameishi Pass; we'll be refueling before continuing our mission. Fire afterburners, I say again, fire afterburners and maintain burn for 120 seconds."

"Understood!" Takeru received the uniformed reply as their TSFs fired their burners. Takeru felt pressed against his seat, and Yuuhi closed her eyes. Takeru shifted his eyes at her and narrowed his eyes in response. Hold on, Yuuhi, we'll make it through this. I'll do my goddamn best to make sure it does!

Special Task Force 'Valkyries' A-01

Michiru narrowed her eyes and transmitted to the incoming rebel forces. "Attention rebel forces, I am Captain Isumi Michiru, UN 11th Forces. Cease all combat operations and disengage from your current course."

"I am 1st Lieutenant Komaki Sayoko, 1st Captial Guard Regiment. UN forces, you are intervening in an internal Japanese matter. We do not acknowledge your authority, return to your Base, or you will be engaged." Sayoko gripped her controls tightly. She had two squadrons against the enemy's one. She had the advantage, yet she was weary of her opponent. A single squadron? Sayoko pursed her lips; the data link didn't recognize their IDs either. They aren't registered with the UN 11th Force database. That must mean only one thing. Black Ops unit. "Stay alert; I don't like the look of these UN forces. Sayoko warned her comrades.

"1st Lieutenant Komaki, we have been instructed by the Prime Minister, the provisional government in Sendo, and the Shogun herself to bring all hostilities to an end." Michiru tried one more time as the enemy squadrons entered effective combat range.

"I say again, we do not recognize your authority, and the Prime Minister has been declared an enemy of the Japanese people. We also do not recognize the provisional Sendo government and cannot trust her Highness has not issued this order under duress."

Michiru closed her eyes and sighed, "then you leave us no choice." Michiru cut contact and addressed her unit. "Valkyries, assume Arrowhead 1 formation, take down as many as you can!"

"Roger!" The girls replied and opened fire.

"Wing 3 formation, surround them!" Sayoko jerked her TSF left, then up, avoiding 36mm fire. The rebel forces fell back, forming two crescents covering a wide area.

"Tch," Mitsuki clicked her tongue, "they're taking us lightly; that kind of pisses me off."

"Then we'll take a page from Shirogane, move into CQC and use their own IFF against them!" Michiru ordered, using her supplemental armor to deflect incoming fire as the Valkyries dove straight into the center of the wings.

"1st Lieutenant, they're coming for us!" Sayoko's left wing commander barked as he banked left to avoid incoming fire. Michiru dove straight for Sayoko, firing her autocannon. Sayoko flew back, zigzagging before bringing her sword and charging. Michiru's jump jets twisted left, catching Sayoko's blade with her supplemental armor. Sayoko swung her other TSF's arm and fired her autocannon. Michiru booster jumped, avoiding her fire.

"You're wide open!" A rebel rushed Michiru to take advantage of the bracing refractory period.

"Who do you take me for!" Michiru barked as her back-mounted autocannon swung out and shredded the rebel TSF.

"AAGH!" The rebel died screaming as his TSF exploded.

"How did you," Sayoko gasped before she flew back along the ground, avoiding a trail of autocannon fire. Then, Sayoko fired a 120mm explosive shell in retaliation.

"Tch!" Michiru clicked her tongue, letting go of her supplemental armor as the shell exploded against it. Then she rushed Sayoko, drawing her sword and firing her autocannon.

"Damn it!" Sayoko went on the backfoot once more, avoiding Michiru's autocannon fire. Michiru rushed Sayoko. Michiru landed on the ground, and Sayoko fired a 120mm shell.

"Not even close!" Michiru fired her jump jets, boosting to the side before rushing Sayoko!

Again!? Sayoko gritted her teeth. It was too late to counter; her only chance was to dodge. She booster jumped up. Even as Michiru's sword was mid-swung, her back-mounted autocannon twisted up, aiming at Sayoko. Sayoko felt her stomach drop, and she braced for the end, Captain Sagiri! Sayoko thought of her Captain one last time.

"1st Lieutenant!" A rebel TSF collided with Sayoko, taking a 120mm explosive shell head-on. "P-please, get to the C-Captain!" The soldier's portrait came up on Sayoko's display. He was bleeding, and there was a fire inside his cockpit. "Long live Japan!" He shouted before his TSF exploded.

"1st Lieutenant, we got this, go!" her left wing commander shouted as his Squadron attacked the Valkyries with almost suicidal zeal.

"You're asking me to abandon my comrades!?" Sayoko barked before her Flight formed around her, having broken free of the valkyrie's relentless assault.

"As if I'll let you pass!" Michiru flew straight at Sayoko's Flight before Mituski's picture appeared on her display.

"Captain, Haruko needs backup, and we're cut off!" Mitsuki grunted, her TSF dodging a rebel sword before she cut the cockpit block in half diagonally.

"I'm coming!" Michiru flew away from Sayoko.

"1st Lieutenant, let's go!" half her Squadron flew past Sayoko, and she pursed her lips. "Don't die, that's an order!" She barked as she blasted off after her comrades.

Michiru watched as a quarter of the enemy force disengaged beyond combat range. "Sorry Shirogane, we'll leave the rest up to you and your friends." Michiru closed her eyes briefly. "Haruka, support Takahara, I'm coming!"

"Roger, oh no, Takahara!" Haruko shouted, and Michiru watched a TSF explode in the distance. "Hold on!" Michiru bared her teeth, pushing her TSF to its limit.

12th Tactical 'Dragon' Platoon/ 66th Tactical 'Hunter' Armored Battalion

Takeru stretched, letting the cold winter winds blow through his hair. He checked his display, checking the fuel gauge.

Fuel 98%

"Welp, break time's over; let's get back inside, your highness." Takeru looked to Yuuhi on his left. She was leaning against his Shiranui's foot.

"Of course, Takeru-sama," Yuuhi pushed off the TSF and walked up to Takeru. He called down the boarding cable and gestured to it. "After you," Takeru smiled.

"Thank you, but we must make haste; let us go together." Yuuhi shook her head slightly, gesturing for the cable.

"Alright," Takeru swallowed. The Americans that chose to disembark, and even the ones that hadn't left their TSF, seemed to immediately stare at them. Calm down, Takeru. This is just both of you boarding at TSF. Takeru stuck his foot through the grip at the bottom.

"Excuse me," Yuuhi stepped on his foot and wrapped her arms around his waist. Takeru wrapped his arm around her waist reflexively.

Takeru looked past Yuuhi and saw an American TSF pilot make eye contact with him. The man grinned and waggled his eyebrows suggestively before moving on. Takeru gaped before snapping his mouth shut with a click. Damn it, I knew what I said early would bite me in the ass.

"Is something the matter, Takeru-sama?" yuuhi looked up at him as the cable lifted them up. Her eyes shone in the moonlight, and Takeru noticed how alike Meiya and Yuuhi were.

Takeru lay on his back, feeling a gentle breeze against his skin. He watched the night sky illuminated by the lights of Seattle. Cloth rustled next to him, making him smile, as he felt Yuuhi climb atop him. She straddled his waist, and Takeru sucked in air, feeling their sexes pressed together. Yuuhi smiled at him mischievously, her naked body wrapped in a blanket. "I love you, Yuuhi." Takeru snuck a hand into her blanket cover and slid it up to cup her chest to feel her.

"Takeru," Yuuhi sighed at his touch, her cheeks tinged in light pink. "Make love to me, Takeru." Yuuhi let the blanket drop, and Takeru hissed, feeling her grind her hips against his. Takeru rolled them over, and he gazed into Yuuhi's eyes. "As her highness orders," Takeru smiled and captured her lips.

"Takeru-sama," Yuuhi shook his shoulder, making Takeru snap out of the vivid memory. "Are you alright?" Yuuhi gave him a concerned look.

"Just," Takeru stepped off the boarding cable with Yuuhi. "Forget it, it's nothing. Come on, let's get going." Takeru took his seat and strapped yuuhi in before closing the cockpit hatch. "Dragon 01, fueling complete; give me a status report." Takeru instantly went into 'business' mode to avoid talking to Yuuhi. That was a really strong memory. I still feel the feelings in my heart, the love I once had for Yuuhi must have been strong. Takeru shifted his eyes at her briefly and thought about it. So in one of my lives, I moved on from Meiya and got together with Yuuhi. I can't believe she would love an idiot like me. Much less the whiner I once was. I must really have lucked out to have two sisters fall for me.

"Dragon 00, reporting all green across the board, were ready to depart." Marimo's portrait made Takeru shift his focus again.

"Understood," Takeru switched channels, "Major Walken, were fueled up and ready."

Alfred's portrait showed up next, "roger Dragon 01, then as ranking officer, I am now taking command of this operation. We will continue as planned and head through the Izu skyline. Additionally, we have word that E3 and E2 have disengaged and restarted their pursuit." Alfred sighed, shaking his head.

"Roger, where do you want us?" Takeru nodded.

"Maintain your earlier formation. Hunter Battalion will form around you and keep you guarded."

"Roger, we're ready to move out on your signal Major," Takeru grinned, pushing his thoughts of Yuuhi to the back of his mind for the moment.

"Alright, Hunter Battalion, 207th Platoon, move out!" Walken ordered as all the TSF blasted off.

Walken's Flight of Raptors took point, while Yuuya Bridges and his 'Hunter 2' Flight took the right flank. Yuuya pressed his lips together, glancing at the golden TSF flying rearguard duty for the trainee squad. Wonder if the Surface Pilot of that TSF knows Yui? Yuuya shook his head and focused ahead. Damn, I gotta keep my mind on the mission.

Alfred frowned when he looked at his map, "attention, I got word from the 108th ahead of us. They got contact to the north, maintain speed, and be prepared for anything."

"Understood!" Everyone responded as their machines flew at breakneck speeds

108th Tactical Armored Battalion

WARNING

Bravo 01 gritted his teeth as an unknown contact entered their radar range. "Attention unknown contacts, you are entering an active UN operation. Turn back immediately, or be considered hostile!" Bravo 01 raised his AMWS-21 as the contacts drew closer with no response. "Assume hostiles, Hammerhead 1 formation."

"Roger," all Bravo elements assumed the tight-knit formation.

"Last warning, leave the operation area immediately or be fired upon!" Bravo 01 pressed his finger on his control's trigger. The units entered effective combat range, and the data link instantly identified the contacts.

Fuji Training Corps 444th Training Squadron

"What?" Bravo 01's strike Eagle lifted its hand, signaling to disengage. The unknown split into two Flights of Shiranui in wedge-one formations pressed on them. Shit, they're not slowing down! "Damn it, they're insurgents, open fire!" Bravo Squadron fired off their jump jets and flew at the Fuji corps.

The Shiranui, sporting the Soviet colors provided an ironic retelling of history to the American Surface Pilots. Though the moment the Strike Eagles engaged, the training corps spread into independent elements harassing the flanks of the Squadron. Bravo 04 dodged to the right, barely staying ahead of the insurgent Shiranui's firing line. "God damn it, these guys really are instructors, GAH!" Bravo took a hit to his jump jet, sending him to the forest below.

"Bravo 04!" Bravo 03 shouted her wingman's callsign. She checked his status and saw he was alive but unconscious. Then, to everyone's surprise. The Fuji rebels ignored the downed TSF. They aren't finishing him off. What the hell man!? Bravo 03 thought as she tripled up with Bravo 02 and 01 as a defensive measure.

"Shit, keep it together, don't let their reputation get to you!" Bravo 01 barked, but he was puckered tight if he was honest with himself. The Fuji training corps were living up to their reputation and then some. Despite outnumbering them and flying the superior Strike Eagle, the Fuji instructors were without equal in the IJA. "We can't let them reach the tollbooth, give them everything you've got!"

"OORAH!" The rest of Bravo Squadron sounded off, revitalized by their flight commander's bravado.

WARNING

Another group of contacts showed up coming in from the northeast. Bravo 01 cursed his luck tenfold. The new group was labeled E2.

207th Tactical 'Dragon' Platoon/ 66th Tactical 'Hunter' Armored Battalion

Alfred came alive on the radio, much to everyone's chagrining. "The 108th has engaged with the Fuji Training Regiment. They requested to cede ground, and I agreed. The crossing might be under fire; stay on Guard!"

"Roger!" everyone replied.

"2nd Lieutenant Shirogane, you do not have permission to engage unless it is to keep her Highness alive. You see an opening. You blast through it, understood?"

"Like mud Major!" Takeru smirked.

Alfred chuckled, his lips pulling up slightly, "an oddly American saying from a Japanese UN soldier."

"I blame the US Army. The first time I met an American, he taught me the best English curse words." Takeru shrugged, and Yuuhi giggled softly after him.

"You served in the US Army?" Alfred's brows shot up in surprise.

"Yeah," Takeru shrugged, my parents moved to the US when I was a kid, and I enlisted." Takeru looked at Yuuhi. "Met some good soldiers and even better people. That's why after my parents died, I returned to Japan and joined the UN." Takeru had practiced this story in his head by now.

"Didn't want to remain with the friends you made?" Alfred hummed.

"Let's just say it wasn't my choice to leave," Takeru smiled somewhat sadly. "But, meeting those people taught me something, mankind can beat the BETA when we stand together!" Takeru grew serious, looking into Alfred's eyes.

"Truer words have never been said, Shirogane Takeru," Alfred smiled. "I'm glad we have met on the battlefield today."

"Likewise Major, so let's live to beat those crab alien motherfuckers from our planet!" With that, Takeru saluted Alfred, who respectfully returned the gesture and ended the transmission.

Shortly after, Tsukuyomi and Yui's portraits showed up in his display. "I see you get along well with the Americans 2nd Lieutenant Shirogane," Yui commented.

"At times, it only makes my suspicions of you grow, 2nd Lieutenant." Tsukuyomi narrowed her eyes.

"I'll have you both know I get along with everyone," Takeru stuck his tongue out childishly. Yuuhi, still patched into all communications, smiled at Takeru's antics.

"To be frank, I was once like 1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi. Unfortunately, living as a Fudai of the Shogunate leaves little time for socializing outside Japan." Yui nodded, and Takeru couldn't agree more. Even as an honorary member, his exposure to the US and later Canadian and French forces had been limited to military actions. He was glad for the friends he made among the IJA/MDF, but he had also formed outstanding bonds with American and even French soldiers.

1st Lieutenant Hill, and 2nd Lieutenant Bernadette, I hope you guys are alright out there. I would have asked Major Walken about 1st Lieutenant Hill if it didn't raise suspicions. But, who knows, if I met Alfred, maybe I'll see both again if fate allows it.

"1st Lieutenant Takamura," Yuuhi said Yui's name with something akin to reverence and regret.

"Do not misunderstand, I still don't think the Americans have any right to interfere with this, but at the same time, if it wasn't for them, we might have been intercepted by Sagiri's men." Yui sighed in evident frustration. "I do not condone Sagiri's actions, but I understand them. Especially after seeing what political strife can cause to the soldiers of countries and the ruin it brings to the battlefield." Yui's face grew serious, "but the spilling of our countrymen's blood is unforgivable even for a noble goal. I keenly understand one should not shy from bloodying one's hands to achieve one's goals. But, to kill one's countrymen for disagreeing with that vision is far too gone from idealism." Yui shook her head, "no, it is because of what I experienced that I understand. Thanks to the people I met, I can also see the UN's feelings on this matter." Yui smiled wryly, "even the American's frustrations have become more palpable."

"1st Lieutenant Takamura," Tsukuyomi gasped, clearly shocked that someone in the Royal Guard held such views.

"Think of it this way, 1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi," Takeru interrupted. "The American people are some of the most divisive in the world. They differ significantly in politics and beliefs, leaning one way or another to the extreme. But, in my time around Americans, I never met a weirdly tolerant and intolerant people." Takeru laughed, thinking of a story Hibiki had told him once about his comrade. During the starting months of the Japanese Seattle leasehold settlement, many children were conscripted to fill the gaps the sinking of Japan had left in the IJA/MDF. If Takeru recalled, one of those children, barely 14, was a gifted young girl. Some Americans had bad-mouthed the Japanese people for using child soldiers, but Hibiki explained later how the Americans, even in their time of crisis, only instituted conscription of 18 years of age. They absolutely detested the idea of children fighting in place of adults. Though Japan was in dire straights, and the matter was forced, Hibiki had also privately harbored those same feelings as the American soldiers. This, along with his experience aboard an American Carrier, started Hibiki's broadening horizons, leading to his joining the reinstated UN Armed Forces.

"Yeah, there are no more confusing people than the Americans," Takeru sighed with a grin. "But, I think a British man once said this about the Americans." Takeru closed his eyes, searching his previous memories and the broadening of his own horizons. "Americans will always do the right thing after trying everything else."

"Quite the backhanded compliment," Tsukuyomi spoke up, but something close to a smile graced her lips.

"Funny thing is, the British themselves can't seem to agree if the words were actually said." Takeru laughed, "the quote is credited to their Prime Minister Winston Churchill."

"Heh," Yui covered her mouth, smiling, "that quote sounds like an American I know." Yuuya's frustrated face passed through Yui's mind.

"Anyways," Takeru interrupted, "were coming up on the tollbooth; let's cut the chatter and get ready!"

Atsugi Base 112th Tactical Armored Regiment/ 1st Capital Guard 1st Daimyo Squadron earlier…

Sagir walked up to the gathered Eishi on the airstrip. A whole regiment and his own Squadron all lined up in good order. Behind them, the Atsugi base personnel were finishing preparations on the Antonov-225 transport planes. The moment of Atsugi's base capture and the confirmation of the American's deployment of the F-22 Raptors, Sagiri had concocted this plan. When he approached Atsugi base with only his Squadron, Sagiri was able to turn the Base personnel to his side. However, Captain Iwane, in charge of what remained of the 100th Atsugi Armored Battalion, would not relent. In what Sagiri thought would become a skirmish, Captain Iwane ordered his men to stand down. Then demanded Sagiri be his second as he committed seppuku, refusing the dishonor of being imprisoned. Sagiri, could not help but accept and bowed deeply to Captain Iwane. Despite our differences, asking me to be your second, I cannot describe the honor you have given me, Captain Iwane. Just as you have acknowledged my cause, I too, recognize your convictions. So please wait for me on the other side. I wish to share Sake with you beneath the cherry blossoms of Kyoto.

"Captain, the planes are ready, and the last of our TSFs have been loaded." 1st Lieutenant Saito of the Atsugi 112th Regiment saluted Sagiri.

"Understood, let us begin," Sagiri nodded to a group of base staff that rushed forward from behind him. They handed each man a small saucer and poured warm Sake on them. Sagiri raised his saucer before the gathered men. "For our fallen countrymen, regardless of side and ideology!" Sagiri downed the bitter drink, as did his compatriots. The saucers were filled once more.

Sagiri looked at the gathered men and women and raised the saucer. "Patriots, fellow brothers and sisters in arms, lend me your ears!" Sagiri closed his eyes before opening them again slowly. "Our allies have been hampered by the interloping UN and American forces. As we speak, they plan to sequester her Highness in the UN Yokohoma Base. I cannot think of a greater insult than placing her Highness where the Americans who abandoned us dropped 2 G-bombs. Then the UN eagerly claimed our sovereign territory for their own, taking the Hive reactor and its resources for themselves!"

"…" The gathered Eishi and staff silently listened, their face etched in growing anger.

"As if the American's abandonment wasn't enough, they now hold her Highness. Therefore, we will commence Operation Starfall, reclaim the Shogun, and expunge the foreign interlopers from our lands!" Sagiri straightened to attention and held his saucer slightly higher. "Comrades, falter not, and remember your courage today will save Japan. Long live the Shogun. Nippon Banzai!"

"Nippon Banzai!" They all threw their saucers to the ground, shattering them and spilling the Sake onto the cold runway.

Sagiri threw his hand out, "to your TSFs!"

"Sir!" The Eishis saluted and scrambled to board their respective cargo planes. Sagiri got on a jeep waiting for him and was driven to his plane holding his TSF. Your Highness, bare your capture a moment longer, and we will free you from the UN and the American's greedy hands.

207th Tactical 'Dragon Platoon/ 66th Tactical 'Hunter' Armored Battalion

"Hunter 02, the 108th is ceding too much ground!" Alfred looked at Yuuya's portrait as it appeared on his display.

"Understood 01!" Yuuya barked and addressed his Flight. "Spare Flight, wedge 1 formation, attack their flank!"

"Roger!" His Flight answered as they broke off and flew ahead of their escort. Yuuya gritted his teeth, feeling his heart beat against his ribcage. Damn it, do I really have to fight humans again!

"Hunter 02, your heart rate is increasing. Are you okay?" Irma's portrait showed up in Yuuya's Display.

"I'm fine," Yuuya snarled through clenched teeth before taking a deep breath. "Just really didn't want to end up fighting humans again." Yuuya lamented, flashes of the Yukon Base incident passing before his mind. Damn it! Yuuya's Raptor pushed forward, reaching effective combat range. Yuuya aimed his dual autocannons and fired on the unsuspecting insurgents. The Raptor's stealth capabilities did their job, and the insurgent TSF was destroyed. So my hands are stained with blood again, so be it!

Yuuya's Flight tore through E1's formation, breaking all their sense of cohesion. He strafed several Shiranui along with his Flight as he raked their line. All the insurgents he shot fell, exploding against the ground. The insurgents quickly recovered and reorganized their ranks to protect against Yuuya. "Here they come, stick to your elements, break!"

Yuuya and Irma broke off left, and John and Arthur broke right. Yuuya led Irma to the first insurgent group at the head of the new formation. He used his Raptor's superior speed to avoid autocannon fire and counterattack with his own.

"Damn F-22s!" An insurgent pilot yelled as he dodged right only to be blasted by Irma.

"Hunter 02, to your right!" Irma warned, flying and firing.

"I got him," Yuuya dropped, sliding onto the ground and firing at an element of Shiranui. The insurgents split off, and Irma tagged the one to break right. She destroyed its arm before Yuuya fired a 120mm armor-piercing shell through its cockpit block. The remaining Shiranui rushed Irma, sword in hand. Irma flew back and fired at the insurgent. The insurgent deftly boosted left and right, avoiding the shots. Just then, a warning blared in Irma's cockpit

LOCKED ON

Irma clicked her tongue, pressing her thumb on the button on the top of her right control stick. Her would-be second attacker panicked as his auto-targeting system lost the lock on. "Active Jamming, AGH!" The insurgent screamed as Irma's back-mounted AMWS-21s destroyed him. She turned and felt her heart drop to her stomach. The distraction allowed the other rebel to close in on her. Irma braced for oblivion.

"Back off!" Yuuya came over the radio as he flew up, bisecting the insurgent TSF from the crotch to the head. The two halves fell, exploding as Yuuya swung his sword to his right. "Hunter 03 you okay?" Yuuya's face popped up in her display.

"Yes, thank you," Irma said from the bottom of her heart, smiling at Yuuya.

"I'm sure the Major would kill me if I let his former XO's wingman die," Yuuya smirked, turning to face a new Insurgent Flight coming their way.

"Is that all?" Irma teased, "you need to learn how to comfort girls better, Hunter 02." Irma flew up next to Yuuya.

"Sorry, I've been told as much before, so how about we take care of this guy first? Then you can help me out with that!" Yuuya blasted off with Irma close behind.

"So this is you asking me out on a date, Hunter 02?" Irma grinned.

"What, when did that happen?" Yuuya said incredolus.

"It's too late now; I expect you to treat me to lunch after this, Hunter 02!" Irma chuckled.

"Fine, whatever, let's get this done then!" Yuuya aimed his autocannon and opened fire, as did Irma. Yuuya was once again reminded of Stella by Irma's antics. Man, why do I keep attracting crazy blondes?

207th Tactical 'Dragon Platoon/ 66th Tactical 'Hunter' Armored Battalion

"They're still losing ground, Charlie Squadron, get in there!" Alfred ordered.

"Roger!" Charlie 01 flew off with his Raptors to help battle at the tollbooth's north.

"This is Alpha squadron. E1 received reinforcements; we're being battered here!" Alpha 01 came over the radio.

"Damn, I knew it was only a matter of time," Alfred muttered. The insurgents had been pushing their numbers in just the right places. He was running out of choices with the 108th locked down protecting the tollbooth. "Delta Squadron, reinforce our rearguard."

"Major, that's gonna leave you with just your Flight," Delta 01's face frowned concernedly on Alfred's display.

"I'm aware." Alfred sighed, "I'll recall Hunter 02's Flight as we pass the toll booth. Now get moving."

"Roger!" Delta 01 saluted Alfred. Delta Squadron, entirely made up of Raptors, flew up and shut the jump jets off, letting their comrades zip by. Then, they turned on a dime and ignited their jump jets to join Alpha Squadron.

"We're reaching the toll booth!" Alfred warned.

WARNING

E3 entered everyone's Radar range. However, their numbers were considerably less than before. Still, Alfred was not about to risk the Shogun. "All units, fire afterburners, continuous burn for 60 seconds!"

"Roger!" Takeru and the girls responded as their jump jet thrusters flared out bright red flames.

"Hunter 02, disengage and follow behind!" Alfred barked.

"Understood! Spare Flight cut 'em loose!" Yuuya blasted past an insurgent cutting the Shiranui in half. Another Flight of Insurgents moved to cut off their path until two of the insurgent's TSFs exploded from behind. The remainder scrambled right but were tagged by John and Arthur clearing their way. Yuuya and his Flight flew past the F-15s of the 108th that helped them with the insurgent Flight. AsYuuya flew past, his Raptor threw a thumbs up to the Strike Eagles, and their flight leader returned it with a thumbs up of their own. The 88th and the 207th straked past, leaving smoke trails. "We're catching up, fire afterburners, continuous burn for 30 seconds!" Yuuya ordered as Spare Flight reorganized itself and flew off after Alfred.

We made it past! Takeru grinned like a kid on Christmas! Now we gotta stay the course and were home free! Takeru allowed himself to relax in his seat for a moment.

"Wait, above us, heads up!" Tsukuyomi's voice came alive on the radio. Everyone's TSFs looked up. Then, flying low just above the mountains, massive Antanov-225 transport planes flew ahead of everyone. They opened their bays, and TSF slid out of them on their backs. Parashoots deployed from packs tied to the TSF shoulders.

"All units full stop," Alfred ordered! Everyone slowed down to a stop before landing.

Takeru punched the side of his cockpit in frustration. The moment the TSFs powered up the data link identified more than half as Atsugi Base 112th Armored Regiment. Damn it, how can you turn your coats after Sagiri's men killed everyone from the 100th!? Takeru glared at the units that now moved to surround their small elements.

"Attention American and UN forces, I am Captain Sagiri Naoya of the 1st Captial Guard Regiment. You are now surrounded and outnumbered. Therefore, in the interest of the safety of her Highness, I am calling for a ceasefire."

Takeru's glare grew tenfold after hearing Sagiri's voice. He's here; he showed up personally! Takeru would thank his stars, but Yuuhi's safety exceeded his vendetta. "Major, what's the call?"

"We hold our position," Alfred answers. "We can't count on the 108th, they're holding off our pursuers. The 209th UN Tactical Armored Battalion is 2 hours away. That's our best hope to break this encirclement."

Sagiri's voice once again filled the open channel. "Surrender, her Highness, and you will be allowed to return to Yokohoma Base. I plead you seriously consider this offer for the lives of your men. We expect a response in the next hour." Sagiri finished his demands before shutting off communications.

"Damn him," Alfred cursed. "All TSFs power down to standby mode. Let's not give the insurgents our exact position." Alfred threw his head back, cursing their rotten luck. With that, the contacts on the rebel radars disappeared one by one.

"What do we do, Major?" Takeru felt his finger hover over his control trigger inadvertently.

"That depends on whether this ceasefire is real," Alfred responded.

"For what it's worth, Sagiri Naoya is a man of his word." Takeru surprised everyone with his words.

"Do you know the man personally, 2nd Lieutenant Shirogane?" Alfred raised a skeptical brow.

"No, not personanlly. But he's a staunch traditionalist. So if he gives his word, he means to keep it." Takeru nodded; also, while we were never friends, crossing swords with a guy multiple times creates a bond of sorts. While Takeru never called Sagiri a friend, he did respect him as Surface Pilot.

"Still," Alfred closed his eyes in thought." Everyone disembarks your TSFs. Let's prepare for an infantry raid."

Ten minutes later, all TSFs made a circle formation in a clearing. Yuuhi had absconded the moment they disembarked by her Royal Guard. Though Takeru wanted to protest, her safety was the Guard's primary goal. So he chose to remain on standby by his TSF while Major Walken thought of a solution to their predicament. Takeru sighed and brought two fingers up to his headset. He located Meiya and pushed off his TSF, and made to find her. When he reached her position, Meiya was standing straight, her hands resting on the pommel of her Katana. "Meiya," Takeru called out to her, and Meiya turned to see him. She smiled and nodded to acknowledge his presence.

Takeru moved to stand by her, crossing his arms. "You doing okay?"

"…" Meiya closed her eyes and sighed. "Am I truly so easy to read?"

"Well, I'd like to think it's because we know each other well." Takeru smiled and nudged his shoulder against hers. "After all, no one here knows me as you do," Takeru coughed into his fist, looking away, flustered.

Meiya looked at Takeru for a brief moment forgetting their situation. "Takeru, may I ask what you were going to say to me before all of this started?"

I love you. Takeru looked at Meiya, the words burning to get out. "I want to tell you, but I wanna save the words when we're on the hill again." I don't know how things will turn out. I know we're gonna fight again, and I'll have to cut my way to Sagiri. Will you still wanna hear my words afterward?

"2nd Lieutenant, there you are."

Takeru and Meiya turned to see Ebisu walk up to them. "Forgive the intrusion Meiya-sama, but her Highness wishes to see 2nd Lieutenant Shirogane."

"Right," Takeru nodded, and he turned to Meiya. "Stay sharp," Takeru patted her shoulder.

"Yes Sir!" Meiya saluted Takeru. Takeru saluted her back, and he followed Ebisu to Yuuhi.

Tsukuyomi stepped up where Major Walken was talking with his second in command. She opened her mouth to speak but gasped slightly. He's Japanese; Tsukuyomi stared at the American Eishi before he locked eyes with her and gestured to Major Walken. "Forgive my interruption. Her Highness is requesting your presence, Major Walken."

"May I ask what this is about?" Alfred turned fully to Tsukuyomi.

"She did not inform me of her intentions, I'm afraid," Tsukuyomi bowed politely to Alfred.

"Very well," Alfred nodded and put two fingers to his headset. "2nd Lieutenant Thesleff, the Shogun has requested a meeting with me. I'll be taking the 1st Lieutenant so everyone's reporting to you for now."

"Understood, Major"

"1st Lieutenant Bridges, let's go," Alfred motioned for Yuuya, who fell in step behind him.

Tsukuyomi walked beside Walken and spared another glance at Yuuya.

"Kinda rude to stare 1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi," Yuuya narrowed his eyes slightly.

Tsukuyomi closed her eyes briefly before staring ahead. "Forgive me, I'm just surprised a fellow Japanese is serving in the American military." Tsukuyomi didn't miss the side glance Major Walken spared his 1st Lieutenant waiting for his response.

Yuuya would take his own lack of anger as a testament to his growth. "I'm not a native," Yuuya said somewhat tightly. "I'm half Japanese though," Yuuya shrugged.

"I see, forgive my presumption," Tsukuyomi bowed her head slightly and said nothing else. He tensed up when I called him Japanese. He must not be entirely proud of the fact. The thought alone bothered Tsukuyomi. She could only guess it had something to do with his parents.

Without further conversation, Yuuy retreated into his mind. I don't know why the 1st Lieutenant's assumption ticked me off. I mean, I guess I'm used to my countrymen calling me a jap. Damn it, I'm overthinking things. Shit, I really am overthinking things; Yuuya shook his head to clear it. He spotted one of the white Royal Guard girls and figured they'd arrived at her location. Alfred stepped up and saluted, "your Highness, I'm Major Alfred Walken, and this is my second in command, 1st Lieutenant Yuuya Bridges."

"Y-Yuuya?"

That voice! Yuuya forgetting the formalities, stepped from behind Walken to see Yui's equally shocked face. So it's really you, Yui! Yuuya couldn't help the full-blown smile that spread across his face. "It's good to see you again, Princess," Yuuya sighed as his smile grew into a grin.

"Ahem," Alfred coughed into his fist, looking at Yuuya.

"Oh, right, sorry!" Yuuya Straightened at attention. "Forgive my rudeness, your Highness!" Yuuya instantly became all business.

Yuuhi looked between Yuuya and Yui before smiling. I see. This must be the man who helped broaden your horizons. "It is alright, but before I begin, may I ask how you and 1st Lieutenant Takamura met?"

"Oh!" Yui and Yuuya reacted simultaneously.

"We!" they started in unison again.

"Sorry," both apologized together.

Takeru covered his mouth with his fist suppressing a laugh. "Relax, you two are acting like newlyweds being asked when they met."

"Eh!?" Yui stepped back, her face reddening.

"The hell man!?" Yuuya glared at Takeru, who held up his hands and shrugged.

Yui recovered first and bowed to Yuuhi. "Forgive me, your Highness, but 1st Lieutenant Bridges and I met at Project Prominence in Alaska. He and I were part of Test Flight Argos."

"I see; I'm glad one of my vassals has expanded their horizons; thank you for your hard work 1st Lieutenant Takamura." Yuuhi smiled and thought to everyone it looked like a polite smile. Takeru knew it was one coming from the bottom of her heart. "Oh, please forgive my distraction. Let us proceed to why I called Major Walken and 2nd Lieutenant Shirogane." Yuuhi's face grew somber, and she leveled her eyes at Takeru and Alfred. "I will negotiate personally with Sagari Naoya."

"Your Highness!" Tsukuyomi stepped up to Yuuhi, "I cannot agree to such a plan!"

"I can't agree to such a plan either;" Major Walken nodded.

"Maybe we can," Takeru crossed his arms.

"What?" Tsukuyomi looked at Takeru, almost looking betrayed.

"Dragon 03, report to my location immediately for retasking." Takeru put two fingers up to his headset.

"Wait," Tsukuyomi realized what Takeru was up to now. "You cannot mean to do this, 2nd Lieutenant Shirogane."

"1st Lieutenant, if you have any better options, I'm open to them." Takeru narrowed his eyes.

"1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi, that is enough; I wish to hear 2nd Lieutenant Shirogane's suggestion." Yuuhi closed her eyes patiently.

As Yuuhi finished, Meiya rounded past a tree. She spotted Yuuhi, and her eyes widened before she regained her composure. "Cadet Mitsurugi Meiya reporting to receive new orders," Meiya straightened at attention and saluted her superiors.

"Your Highness, please tell us your plan once more," Takeru nodded to Yuuhi.

"I wish to personally negotiate with Captain Sagiri Naoya." Yuuhi shifted her eyes in Meiya's direction.

Meiya gasped and looked at Takeru. The two stared at one another for a moment, and it dawned on Meiya why she was there. "Your Highness, I am but a humble servant and have prepared myself for a moment such as this. Please, allow me to go in your stead and deal with Captain Sagiri Naoya." Meiya knelt and bowed her head in submission before Yuuhi.

"Cadet Mitsurugi, do you truly wish to put yourself in peril for my sake?" Yuuhi narrowed her eyes slightly.

"It is my duty to give this life of mine in your service," Meiya remained in her submissive position, not raising her head. "If today is the day I must give my life, it shall be my honor to do so."

"I see," Yuuhi replied softly.

"…" Alfred narrowed his eyes at using a Cadet as bait. Is this where the mentality of self-sacrifice of the Japanese becomes a burden?

"I propose an alternative," Takeru raised his hand.

"2nd Lieutenant," Yuuhi looked up at Takeru.

"Major, you get our forces into position, and I will challenge Sagiri Naoya to single combat." Takeru proposed.

"What?" Alfred balked at the idea. "What reason have we to believe he will agree?"

"Because Cadet Mitsurugi will deliver the challenge, I will act as her champion. I know men like Sagiri Naoya. They live and die by set principles, and he has lived as a samurai despite not being of noble blood." Takeru gestured around them, "he also is a man of his word, as he has not broken the ceasefire or tried to take the Shogun by stealth."

"Such is your belief on a man who turned on his own countrymen?" Alfred glared before closing his eyes. "I can't in good conscience agree to put a Cadet in danger over the word of an insurgent."

"Major," Takeru walked up to Alfred, "I wouldn't ask a sensible man like yourself to place blind faith in words." Takeru shook his head, "use your Raptors stealth advantage to prepare for a breakthrough. "Should I fail to beat Sagiri, I shall leave Cadet Mitsirugi's hands on 1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi's hands."

"Mine?" Tsukuyomi blinked, confused.

"Yes, 1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi, as a Royal Guard and a direct Vassal of her Highness, you can arrange the duel. Then I will transfer Meiya to your TSF to battle Sagiri."

"I see," Alfred spoke up, a smirk pulling at his lips. "2nd Lieutenant, you have the makings of a leader. I respect a man who puts himself in danger before his subordinates."

"I only gamble with what I'm willing to lose," Takeru gave a sardonic smile and a shrug.

"Very well, I will arrange our forces, and 10 minutes before the end of the ceasefire, 1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi will contact Sagiri." Alfred nodded, "would this arrangement work for you, your Highness?"

Yuuhi looked at Meiya, who dutifully remained submissive as they all talked. "Very well, I shall again place my trust in all of you." Yuuhi bowed politelty.

"Alright, Cadet Mitsurugi should change fortified suits with the Shogun. It wouldn't do well for Sagiri to see her wearing a UN trainee suit and get suspicious." Takeru added.

"Of course, please excuse us," Yuuhi nodded, and the men took their leave.

30 minutes later, Takeru sat in his TSF with Meiya on his lap. She had been quiet for a while, and Takeru was starting to wonder if she was mad at him. Meiya shifted her eyes at him finally and spoke. "Thank you," she whispered softly.

Takeru looked at her and glanced at her hands. She was holding something made of cloth, and Takeru couldn't tell what it was. "I wasn't particularly thinking just about you," Takeru grinned. "But, I'm glad you two got to talk, if only briefly."

"Takeru," Meiya looked at him, her eyes shining with something familiar. Takeru paused in his preparations and stared at Meiya. That look, it reminds me of that time in the simulator. "Meiya," Takeru couldn't help himself. He leaned forward, pressing his lips in a thin line.

"Takeru," Meiya leaned in, her lips quirking in a soft smile. "In case something happens," Meiya whispered. "I want to tell you something."

"I'm not going to die," Takeru stated firmly. "I refuse to die before I can take you back to the hill." Takeru's eyes bore into Meiya's.

"Takeru," Meiya felt her heart beat faster at his words. "Takeru…I!"

"It's time, are you ready?" Tsukuyomi appeared in both of their displays.

Takeru and Meiya pulled back, startled, and Takeru sighed. Bad timing on your part Tsukuyomi-san. "Yeah, we're ready to go ahead and contact Sagiri."

"Understood, standby."

"Takeru," Meiya looked at Takeru and leaned in.

"Meiya," Takeru froze as he felt her lips brush his cheek.

"I've been told a kiss from a woman is considered good luck," Meiya blushed and straightened on his lap.

"Ah," Takeru chuckled. I better not tell her about the widow's kiss. She'll worry herself silly.

"This Captain Sagiri Naoya, have you decided to surrender."

"Captain Sagiri, her Highness wishes to meet you personally," Tsukuyomi stated.

"If this is true, for what purpose does her Highness wish for my humble presence?"

"She wishes to speak with you to end this madness. But, failing that, she wishes to appeal to your honor as a warrior and issues a challenge against her chosen champion." Tsukuyomi narrowed her eyes.

"You will fight on her behalf, 1st Lieutenant?"

"No, she has chosen her escort, 2nd Lieutenant Shirogane Takeru of UN 11th Forces." Tsukuyomi shook her head.

"What?" Sagiri's eyes narrowed, "why would she choose an interloper instead of her Royal Guard?"

"I guess you missed my name," Takeru cut into the conversation.

"2nd Lieutenant!" Tsukuyomi admonished.

"I am Shirogane Takeru, and I'm Japanese too!" Takeru glared at Sagiri as his portrait showed up in his display.

"Or have I lost my right to call myself that because I chose to fight for mankind in the UN's armed forces?" Takeru gritted his teeth, and he laughed at himself in his mind. So this is what pretending to be a patriot is like?

"…" Sagiri pursed his lips at a loss for words, "so you have a grievance against me, 2nd Lieutenant? It sounds to me like you volunteered for this duel."

You damn right I do! You're out here wasting time and resources on this damn rebellion! Takeru took a 'calming' breath. "You've killed a lot of good soldiers just doing their jobs. Worse, you pulled forces from the Defense Line to serve your ends. You god damn right this is personal!" Takeru did not fake his anger this time. "As a soldier of the UN, who has sworn to defend mankind, battles against humans like this piss me off!" Takeru shook his head, "so if you won't listen to reason, I'll kill you myself!"

Sagir bared his teeth and glared, "if you call this battle meaningless, then what right have you to call yourself a Japanese!" Sagiri closed his eyes, "would you turn a blind eye to your countrymen's suffering while foreign powers use us as their pawns against the BETA?"

"I am a soldier, as are you!" Takeru barked right back, "I swore to defend the people, whoever they may be. I swore to sacrifice everything for the day we drive the BETA of our world. But if we're all dead, what the hell does it matter who's in charge of what?"

"Being a soldier isn't enough to save humanity or our people! We must look forward to the day the BETA are gone and ensure the freedom and lively hood of the people we swore to protect. If we don't rise to that, we will let men of greater ambition and ill will determine our country's fate!"

"Then you'd rather we all die than live to solve our problems in the future? The hell kind of answer is that if you don't have hope in people. Then go die by yourself somewhere, and don't drag everyone else with you!" Takeru snarled, "I refuse to give up on people, no matter what. I want to trust that we can stop the BETA and protect the dream that is Japan. But I refuse to do it at the expense of all humanity!"

Sagiri glared at Takeru, and the two stared each other down. Finally, Sagiri closed his eyes, "there is no more need for words."

"No, but if you still want to hear her Highnesses words, I don't mind waiting. If you still don't listen after that, then our blades will do the talking."

"Very well, I will agree to her Highness's request. The meeting point on this plateau," coordinates were sent through the data link. Takeru accepted the information outside their network and displayed it to all his comrades.

"Understood. To keep things simple, It will only be 1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi and me."

"Very well, I shall agree to this, and I will bring my second as well." With that, Sagiri cut off the transmission.

"Takeru, those words you spoke. That is to say, your initial feelings." Meiya looked at Takeru, her expression unreadable. "Forgive me; I hope I do not offend you by saying this. But, your words were insincere."

"Huh?" Takeru gasped, taken aback. Meiya, can you really see through me so easily?

"Takeru, you once told me you wished to fight for all humanity," Meiya smiled. "Japan is also part of humanity, is it not?"

"Yeah," Takeru nodded, pursing his lips.

"Then, I hope your initial words were not for my sake." Meiya shook her head, "because I do not need such needless platitudes." Meiya reached over and placed her hand over his. "I know you will always fight for us, for our comrades, even the Americans. So don't worry about me, I know I can entrust the safety of my countrymen to you, Shirogane Takeru."

"Meiya," Takeru felt his chest tighten and forcedly closed his eyes. "I'm not; that is to say, I only said those words to make Sagiri want to fight me." Takeru gripped his controls in a deaths grip. "I'm going to kill Sagiri; that has been my mission from the beginning."

"Takeru," Meiya gasped, shocked.

Takeru swallowed a lump in his throat; he couldn't bare to look at her. "For the sake of the world, for Japan, I have to kill him!" Takeru finally opened his eyes and looked into Meiya's. "I'm just a killer, Meiya. I have the blood of humans on my hands." Takeru couldn't help it. He spilled the feelings of regret that ate away at him. "I'm a monster, so many dead, so many pleading for Mercy. But if I didn't kill them, they would just…they would come back to the battlefield!"

Takeru remembered the last time he faced Sagiri Naoya and the look of utter devastation on the person who was closest to him. Captain Komaki Sayoko, the pure look of devastation as she had run from her disabled TSF, only to watch Takeru drive his sword through Sagiri's Rafale. But at the time, Takeru could recall nothing but a feeling of accomplishment, and only after he noticed Komaki's face did he realize his evil. He had taken pride in killing a fellow human, and up to that point, the name of The Dragon of the West ceased to be a title. It had dawned on Takeru that the name didn't originate from his fellow soldiers. The title he once admitted pride to was the moniker the French and Canadian forces placed him for killing so many. Then that man had moved his TSF to Takeru's side and shouted at the top of his lungs!

"THE DRAGON OF THE WEST, HERO OF SEATTLE!" A blue Takemikazuchi grabbed his TSF arm and raised it up. The cheer of American and Japanese forces filled the airwaves. Takeru, eyes wide and face horrified, stared at the slumped Rafale and the blood that leaked from the pierced cockpit. "You've ended a war Captain Shirogane. Now the Japanese people will rally behind our divine banner. The world will forever be in your debt."

"You fool," a gentle voice brought him out of his stupor. Takeru opened his eyes and gasped before Meiya cradled his head against her chest. "What monster would cry for his slain foes?"

Takeru gritted his teeth," Meiya," Takeru let go of his control sticks and embraced her.

"Enough," Meiya lifted his head and wiped his tears with her thumb. "You are Shirogane Takeru, our pillar of strength. The time for tears should be a private affair." Meiya smiled gently. "Do you truly believe the death of Sagiri Naoya to be necessary?"

"…" Takeru wiped at his eyes and took a steadying breath. "I've met men like him; they live for a cause and infect others with that cause. Sometimes a charismatic leader is more dangerous than a mad despot."

Takeru gripped his controls tightly as a blue Takimkazuchi flew ahead of him. The Eishi of the blue TSF came alive on the radio. "Shirogane, tell me something. Would you save humanity from themselves if you could? Would you become their idealized savior to guide them to salvation?"

"I'm not looking to lead anyone into my idea of what the world should be. We all have to determine our own paths." Takeru looked at Meiya, "but as I said to Sagiri, I will always believe in humanity. So if you tell me you can convince him to stop him, I will support you all the way Meiya."

"Takeru," Meiya looked at him seriously, "Sagiri has chosen a path of blood, and it can end in no other way. Your words only ring true in my heart. His cause will divide the Japanese people. Though it pains me greatly, I see things as you do. I shall ask Sagiri to surrender and pay for his crimes and that of his men by falling on his sword." Meiya looked down and clutched the sack in her hands. "One should not hesitate to bloody one's hands to achieve their goals. That is the world we live in, Takeru. I will not turn my eyes away from it. Rather, I must embrace it and follow my own path."

Yuuhi, Takeru thought of her and smiled broadly. "Spoken like a true Daimyo," Takeru chuckled.

"I see you've come to your sense," Meiya blushed and glared at him.

"Sorry," Takeru shrugged. "But you're right; let's face this head-on, no matter what. So let's make sure we make it to the end!" Takeru gripped his controls and addressed Tsukuyomi. "Sorry for the delay. Let's go!"

"Understood," Tsukuyomi nodded, and they flew off to the meeting point.

After 10 minutes Sagiri and his escort arrived at the agreed location. His black Shiranui touched down five meters from Takeru's. Sagiri's TSF cockpit opened, and out stepped the man himself.

"You ready?" Takeru looked at Meiya.

"Yes," Meiya took a deep breath, "please open the cockpit, Takeru."

Whoa, that sounded really close to Yuuhi's voice. Takeru nodded as his cockpit slid out, and Meiya stood up. No one spoke for a few seconds, and a warning popped up in Takeru's display

ENEMY SCAN IN PROGRESS

Shit, he must be verifying Meiya's identity!

"Calm yourself, Takeru," Meiya replied in Yuuhi's voice. "The Shogunate has planned for a situation like this in advance."

Finally, Sagiri closed his eyes and knelt, as did the TSF accompanying him. "Your Highness, thank you for granting me this audience." Sagiri's voice was amplified by his TSF speakers.

"It seemed only right to do so after you raised arms in my name and that of the people's." Meiya closed her eyes and brought the sack doll Takeru guessed to her chest. "With that in mind, tell me, Captain Sagiri, why have you slayed your countrymen and brought chaos to our homeland."

"Your Highness, please understand," Sagiri's hands balled into fists. "That the Imperial Diet was a corrupt organization, and the head of that corruption was Sakaki Korechika! Your Highness, the Imperial Diet has been making backroom dealings with an American intelligence agency!"

"!" Meiya gasped, and Takeru winced. That's right, I forget how sheltered we all were from the power struggles before.

"Sakaki and his cabinet have spent years trading our resources and the lives of Japanese soldiers for the Americans and the UN!" Sagiri opened his eyes and looked at Meiya, "The UN and the American government have been waging a shadow war for years, and our country is caught in the middle of it. The Alternative program is headed by the UN and backed by the Imperial Diet. According to the information I extracted from the American dogs who thought they could manipulate me. The Alternative Program has had several iterations, and now they are at the phase they call Alternative IV."

God damn it, he's spilling all our goddamn secrets! Takeru gripped his controls. "Meiya," Takeru hissed, but Meiya was in utter shock hearing Sagiri's words.

"Because of this program, the Americans have sent their CIA dogs to cause friction and animosity between ourselves and the UN. They went so far as to help me plan my rebellion, believing I would strike at the UN to destroy the Alternative Program." Sagiri glared and bared his teeth in anger. "They even believed I would assault the Royal Palace to hold you hostage. They even planted agents in my forces to sow the chaos wrought before us. But, I shan't place the blame solely on them. For I took up arms against my compatriots of my own free will. I shall bare that responsibility and pay for it accordingly. But before I do, please, your Highness, allow me to finish rooting out all these foreign interlopers from our homeland. Though I admit to baring some animosity personally against the UN forces. I shall not lift a finger against them so long as they do not interfere." Sagiri looked down, a deep sadness weighing on his shoulders. "I must rebel until Japan is free from foreign influence. Only then can we walk as equals with the UN."

He spilled so much, but more than that. He has vital information that might help us against the Alternative V backers! God damn you, Sagiri! I need you alive now, for the sake of everyone! Takeru growled and looked up at Meiya. "Meiya, we need him alive," Takeru said through gritted teeth. Meiya looked back at him, and Takeru prepared for the counterargument. He was ready to make Meiya see his way without revealing more vital intel.

"Captain Sagiri," Meiya finally responded. "If your words are true, I ask you to sacrifice yourself for our homeland. Captain Sagiri, end this rebellion and hand yourself over to the UN."

"Meiya," Takeru smiled behind her.

"I cannot willingly throw myself at the mercy of the UN," Sagiri shook his head. "However, the words of your UN Eishi have stirred my blade arm. If he is prepared to fight me, I have ordered my men to surrender upon my death."

"So you would decide things as warriors," Meiya breathed out, resigning herself. "Then hear me, Shirogane Takeru, my chosen champion. Capture Captain Sagiri alive!"

Sagiri gasped, his head snapping up to look at Meiya.

"Yes, your Highness!" Takeru shouted with a smirk. He brought his TSFs hand up, and Meiya stepped out on it.

Tsukuyomi's TSF stepped up and opened its cockpit. Tsukuyomi stood up and offered her hand to Meiya. Once Meiya stepped into her cockpit, Tsukuyomi started to walk away.

"1st Lieutenant," Takeru called after her.

"Hm?" Tsukuyomi turned her blood-red TSF to him. "Would you allow me the use of one of your swords?" Takeru stretched his TSF's arm out to her.

"I don't think," Tsukuyomi began.

"It is fine with me," Sagiri boarded his TSF and unsheathed his sword from his pylon.

Tsukuyomi nodded and turned around. Takeru tossed his autocannon aside and grabbed her sword. Then he ejected his back-mounted rifle and drew his own blade. He held them up before spinning them and held them in his signature reverse grip. "Alright, I'm ready!"

Tsukuyomi cleared the immediate area, as did Sagiri's second. Then to Takeru's surprise and dread, his second opened their cockpit and revealed themselves. Komaki-san, Takeru pursed his lips. No, this isn't like back then. I'll capture Sagiri alive. I have to, for the sake of Alternative IV!

Sagiri ejected his autocannons following Takeru's lead. I will respond in kind and let our blades finish our argument, Shirogane Takeru!

Both TSFs stared one another down before taking combat stances. "Sagiri, you're coming with me!"

"Shirogane Takeru, show me your resolve!" Sagiri barked as both TSFs ignited their jump jets!

CODE: 991

"What!?" Sagiri and Takeru gasped, and the warning blared across every TSF in Japan. Fighting ceased almost immediately, and all command structures were launched into chaos as the message was being played across every frequency possible.

"W..bzzt….are….bzzt…1…" Takeru tapped his headset. Mountains are interfering with the signal. "Sagiri!"Takeru shouted at his opponent. Then, Takeru's TSF pointed upward.

Sagiri's Shiranui nodded, and both blasted off to get above mountain level. After both suits cleared the mountains, everyone around them also flew up. Finally, Takeru placed his hand against his headset and felt his stomach drop.

"I say again, all forces currently engaged in combat in Japan, cease all combat operations. I am now transmitting Code: 991 over every bandwidth frequency and data link. I am Captain Yi-Sun Sin of the HMS Yangtze Ballistic Submarine, 11th COSEAN fleet. We detected an Army-sized BETA group going into the East China Sea headed straight for Japan. The Army Group divided itself into two Corps size herds. The first will make landfall in the Shimane Prefecture, we estimate the herd's vanguard will emerge at old Oda. The second group had been on a direct course to Sadogashima. However, until December 4, it changed course and will appear at Hyogo. Our estimated landing is in the old city of Kami. We made haste to warn the Japanese people. We're six hours ahead of the first herd and five hours away from the second. This message will now repeat."

Takeru gritted his teeth and gripped his control sticks tightly. "Damn it," Takeru seethed. "DAMN IT!" He screamed inside his cockpit and smashed his fist against the side of it.

December 6, 2001, 00:00 hours, the 2nd BETA Invasion of Japan had begun

Oh boy, this one took me a while to finish, but here we are! Anyways, hope you all enjoy this chapter. BTW, for anyone wondering why there is no hypnosis for Irma? Well, Walken's 1st Lieutenant was the Alt V handler for them. But, the Alt IV pro elements from Langely replaced him with Yuuya. So without the handler, Alt V Langley aborted the sleeper agent activation. At least for now, we will see in the future, won't we?

Anyways, I digress. Please enjoy this chapter and the 2nd BETA of Invasion of Japan to come! Shoutout to all the mad lads who continue to leave reviews. Thank you all for your continued support!
