Chapter 9: The Only Easy Day…
December 6, 2001
Heikawa Toll Booth 00:00 hours
UN, IJA, American, and ambiguous rebel forces had massed on one spot. With elements of the Atsugi Base, UN Yokohoma Base, and the nearest IJA bases, a venerable defense force was being prepared. However, unity was the last thing on anyone's mind. Clear divisive lines had been drawn. American and UN forces glared at Japanese rebel forces, and IJA forces watched all sides with mistrust. The BETA were hours away, and for Yuuya Bridges, history was repeating itself. He walked past various personnel to the hastily erected Command tent. A UN guard and an IJA guard stood outside. Upon spotting Yuuya, both men saluted him, and Yuuya returned the salute as he entered the tent. If tensions outside were high, Yuuya could practically feel the animosity inside the tent. Yuuya walked to his designated place by Major Walken and 7th fleet Admiral Frank Miller. Next to Yuuya was the Shogun and her Royal Guard, and next to them was the UN's Brigader General Paul Radhabinod. Yuuya stared across the table at Sagiri Naoya, his XO Komaki Sayoko, and the IJA's highest-ranking officer, who was available at short notice. Lieutenant Colonel Iwaya Eiji. As Yuuya promised the Major, he stood with his hands behind his back. Though he could not help them being balled into fists.
"We're getting nowhere, and time is short," General Radhabinod breathed out, doing his best to hide his frustrations. Clearly, Yuuya had entered at the tail end of an argument.
"Agreed," Colonel Iwaya nodded. "Therefore, under the act of the state of emergency and wartime measures. I hereby use my authority within the Ministry of Defense to acknowledge her Highness as the acting Commander and Chief of our Armed forces." Colonel Iwaya bowed deeply before the Shogun.
"Thank you, Lieutenant Colonel Iwaya," Yuuhi, the real one this time, bowed, thanking him.
"Very well," Sagiri nodded. "Your Highness, we humbly submit ourselves to your judgment at present." Sagiri and Komaki bowed before her.
"I accept your submission, however, until such a time that our country is no longer under immediate threat. I have chosen to reinstate you and your soldier's ranks and status within the Imperial Japanese Army." Yuuhi bowed her head briefly. "However, please know should you and any of your men survive the battles to come. You will be subject to a court martial for your actions."
"We understand and are prepared to face your judgment whatever the day holds for us." Sagiri and Komaki bowed respectfully.
"Very well, with this out of the way, we of the UN forces have come up with a plan." General Radhabinod nodded to his assistant.
A female officer with short blonde hair and a headset nodded. She put a laptop on the table and connected it to a projector. She projected her laptop's content on the tent wall and explained the plan. "Given that time is short, we cannot possibly hope to oppose the BETA landing. Therefore we propose to set up a 3-pronged Absolute Defense Line." The screen showed a map of Japan before zooming in. A blue line stretched from old Tsuruga to Lake Biwa, bisecting the Fukui and Shiga Prefectures. "American and UN forces would be tasked with holding this line."
"I assume this is to avoid a re-organization of the Sadogashima Defense Line." 1st Lieutenant Komaki raised her hand.
"Correct, we do not have the luxury of time to pull our forces from the Secondary Defense Line and switch out." The woman nodded.
"Thank you, Lieutenant Pyatkh. Please continue," General Radhabinod nodded.
Lieutenant Pyatkh tapped at her computer, "We also propose a secondary defense line here." The map zoomed out more to show a blue line drawn southwest from the southern tip of Lake Biwa to Osaka Bay. "We propose the IJA form this line."
"Kyoto," Sagiri breathed out. "Yes, it is fitting we face our mortal foe where they bested us." Sagiri, sitting and resting his folded hands over the pommel of his Katana, nodded.
"Colonel Iwaya, I would entrust the command of the Kyoto Defense Line to you." Shogun Koubuin Yuuhi bowed her head toward the Lieutenant Colonel.
"That won't be a problem, will it, Captain?" Colonel Iwaya emphasized the rank.
"I do not intend to compromise the chain of command," Sagiri closed his eyes.
"Good. Please continue Lieutenant," Colonel Iwaya nodded.
"Right," Lieutenant Pyatkh tapped at her laptop once more. "Finally, a combined force of UN, IJA, and American forces will deploy here." The map zoomed back out to show a third and final defense line stretching across the eastern shore of Lake Biwa on the Shiga Prefect. "These 3-line defense lines will compromise the Absolute Defense Line. Finally, to facilitate the ease of orders and maintain a tight chain of command. We ask that this be considered a UN Operation, thus submitting all forces underneath the UN 11th Forces command chain."
"Is this really necessary?" Komaki protested, "the IJA is perfectly able to cooperate with the UN."
"The 1st BETA invasion would beg to differ. There was a constant butting of heads between the IJA and US forces." Admiral Miller finally spoke up.
"Of course we butted heads. You kept suggesting the use of strategic weapons on our own soil!" Komaki gritted her teeth.
"These are lessons we learned fighting a losing war on the European continent." Admiral Miller scowled. "You cannot slug it out with the BETA; strategic denials are the only way to widdle their numbers down. Only then can an effective counteroffensive be mounted."
"Is that why you broke the treaty you imposed on us!?" Komaki spat out, pointing her finger at the Admiral.
"1st Lieutenant!" Sagiri barked, silencing her.
"A regrettable action, but make no mistake. Our decision was based on ensuring the African Union wasn't wiped out." Admiral Miller narrowed his eyes, "the BETA forces us to make sacrifices. I had to watch many of my friends and comrades deploy into battle and never return." Miller glared at the IJA members. "So remember, my countrymen and friends spilled their blood for yours! So don't come barking at me like the victim."
"Admiral," Major Walken looked at the Admiral.
Admiral Miller adjusted his cap, "please excuse my interruption." Miller nodded to Lieutenant Pyatkh. "The 7th fleet has no objections to submitting itself to UN command."
"Neither does the IJA. Are we clear 1st Lieutenant?" Colonel Iwaya gave the Lieutenant a cool stare.
"Cyrstal, Lieutenant Colonel," Komaki bowed apologetically.
"Excellent; then the deployment of our forces will be as follows." Lieutenant Pyatkh tapped at her laptop, but before she could continue, the tent flaps opened.
"Ah, I see you already started; sorry about the delay," Yuuko smirked, walking in with Takeru.
"XO Kouzuki, is everything alright?" General Radhabinod stared passively at Yuuko as she walked up beside him.
"Merely preparing for contingencies." Yuuko smiled mysteriously. "As you were, Lieutenant Pyatkh."
"Yes Mam," the blonde woman nodded. "As I was saying, the forces deployments will be as follows." The map zoomed in to the far north defense line. "The 108th Tactical Armored Battalion, 132nd Tactical Armored Battalion, 5th Tactical Armored Battalion, and finally, the 209th Tactical Armored Battalion. These forces will compromise the Alpha Defense Line and be in charge of containing Killbox Alpha." The map was updated to form a red square with an 'A' in the center. "The Second Defense Line will be compromised of the 7th Tactical Armored Battalion, 66th Tactical Armored Battalion, 101st Tactical Armored Battalion, and 404th Tactical Armored Battalion. They will be responsible for Killbox Bravo," the map made a square around Lake Biwa with a 'B' at the center. "Finally, the third defense line will deploy all elements of the 12th Armored Division, 1st and 2nd Captial Guard Regiment, 16th Royal Guard Regiment, and Atsugi Base 601st and 608th Tactical Armored Battalions. They shall be in charge of Killbox Charlie." The map updated accordingly.
Lieutenant Pyatkh tapped away at her keyboard. "Now, on to our supporting elements. The Imperial Navy will provide its 1st, 2nd, and 3rd fleets to hammer the BETA landing at Kami, while the 4th and 6th fleets hammer the Oda landing point. From there on, until the Laser Class makes its appearance, all Air power will be deployed in full force to intercept the BETA forces that get past the saturated bombardment."
Everyone in the room tensed; sending air power before Laser Class confirmation was always a gamble. Takeru, with his arms crossed, gripped his biceps tightly. Still, the situation was do or die for all of them.
Unperturbed, Lieutenant Pyatkh continued. "For ground support, a secondary support line will be formed behind the Absolute Defense Line. The first line will have the support of the UN's 1st, 2nd, and 4th Artillery Battalions and the 6th and 7th Rocket Battalions. The second line will have the IJA's 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th Artillery Battalions and 6th Rocket Battalion. Finally, the third defense line will have the IJA 3rd and 4th Artillery Divisions and the UN's remaining 6th, 7th, and 8th Rocket Battalions." The map showed a second red line with all mentioned units lined behind the Absolute Defense Line. "Finally, the UN 11th fleet, US 7th fleet, and IJA 8th fleet will provide further support from Osaka Bay." Two blue triangles blipped into existence on Osaka Bay.
"To conclude this briefing, each Defense Line will contribute a flight from each Battalion to form 3 Squadrons. These volunteer Squadrons will be designated Jeager 1, 2, and 3. These Jeager Squadrons shall have a dual purpose. The Jeager Squadrons will be in charge of reinforcing their respective lines should there be a threat of a breakthrough by the BETA. However, please keep in mind this is only a secondary objective. The Jeager Squadrons' main purpose will be to perform Laserjagd when the Laser Class shows themselves." 3 blue arrows behind the Absolute Defense Lines showed up labeled J's 1 through 3. "Now, are there any more questions anyone would like to ask?"
"Yes," Yuuya raised his hand, and Lieutenant Pyatkh nodded at him. Yuuya crossed his arms and looked at the map. "We're gonna be pressed tight. What's our hope of being reinforced?"
"For that, you should thank your lucky stars," Yuuko spoke up, smirking. "I have already contacted the UN 12th Forces, and they are preparing an expeditionary force as we speak. We may be luckier in receiving reinforcements from the COSEAN forces as well. The COSEAN submarine has used its escape submarine to deliver the news to the COSEAN 11th fleet in the Yellow Sea."
"Then I hope they make it in time," Yuuya sighed. "That was all I needed to know, thank you." Yuuya saluted before returning to parade rest.
No one else asked questions, and Lieutenant Pyatkh bowed politely. "If there is nothing else, I suggest everyone report to their units. All units will be deployed promptly, and all Surface Pilots should remain inside their TSF in forced sleep until they arrive at their designated positions."
"Understood," Major Walken stood up along with his comrades. "Good luck to us all," Alfred closed his eyes. Then, Alfred turned to Yuuhi and saluted her, "God bless Japan."
Yuuhi smiled slightly and stood up and bowed lower than the Shogun ever should. Everyone gasped, and even Alfred was stunned by the display. Yuuhi straightened again, smiling at Major Walken. "Thank you for once again fighting for the sake of my people, Major Walken. Though it may be paltry words, I want to say each and every one of your comrades of the 7th Fleet will always be welcomed in Japan." Yuuhi closed her eyes, her smile never leaving her face. "I hope one day you can visit when we have driven the BETA from our homeland and returned it to its former beauty."
Alfred smiled back and bowed respectfully to Yuuhi. "I would like that, your Highness. Now, please excuse us." Alfred and Miller walked out.
Yuuya lingered for a moment and shared a look with Yui. She smiled and nodded at him. Yuuya turned to leave, "don't die on me out there, Princess." Yuuya said before walking out of the tent.
"Princess?" Yuuhi blinked and looked at Yui.
"O-oh, please think nothing of it, Your Highness. It's simply a nickname Yuuya gave me during our time together at Yukon." Yui blushed self-consciously.
"Oh, I see," Yuuhi hummed, still confused.
"It's like when love birds call each other cute nicknames, Yuuhi." Takeru suddenly appeared behind Yui and Yuuhi.
"Oh! I had no idea you had such a relationship with 1st Lieutenant Bridges, 1st Lieutenant Takamura." Yuuhi smiled approvingly at her.
"L-love b-birds!?" Yui gasped before whirling around and glaring at Takeru while blushing harder. "2nd Lieutenant Shirogane, please don't fill her highness's head with misconceptions!"
"He seems to specialize in such scandalous behavior," Tsukuyomi walked up to them.
"Hm?" Takeru raised a brow at Tsukuyomi, "could it be you want me to give you a cute nickname too, 1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi?" Takeru grinned devilishly, not unlike Yuuko.
"Geh!" Tsukuyomi blushed instantly. "Excuse me, I must see to my TSF. Call on me if you require anything else, your Highness." Tsukuyomi made her hasty excuses and doubled timed out of the command tent.
"There she goes," Takeru shrugged and grinned at Yuuhi.
Yuuhi laughed, covering her mouth with the back of her hand. "You tease the 1st Lieutenant too much, Takeru-sama." Yuuhi sighed contently and looked on at Takeru in a slight melancholy. "Well, excuse me, I must return to Tokyo post haste. I hope we can converse once again." Then in a moment of boldness that absolutely caught everyone off guard. Yuuhi walked up to Takeru and placed a kiss on his cheek.
"Y-your Highness!" Yui and the 3 girls gasped in disbelief.
"Forgive me," Yuuhi sighed. "But, it seems I have entered into a battle of my own. If I am not bold, I shall lose this battle. So with that in mind, please give me your hand Takeru-sama." Yuuhi reached up and undid the ribbon on her head. Yuuhi's hair pooled around her, and she tied the ribbon around Takeru's hand. "Take this token, with the hope we shall meet again, Takeru-sama." Yuuhi bowed slightly once more before making her exit. The three girls of the Royal Guard recovered first and trotted after their charge, leaving a still stun Takeru and Yui.
"Shirogane," Yuuko walked up to the group.
"Huh?" Takeru shook his head and looked at Yuuko.
"You know what to do; now get to it," Yuuko nodded at him.
"Right, I'll make sure we're all ready." Takeru straightened to attention. Then he took his leave, and Yuuko, the General, and Lieutenant Pyatkh followed suit.
"1st Lieutenant Takamura," Eiji walked up with Sagiri and Komaki.
"Sir!" Yui saluted the Colonel and shifted her eyes to Sagiri and Komaki. They did as military protocol dictated and saluted Yui in return.
"It's good to see you alive and well, 1st Lieutenant Takamura." Eiji smiled at his best friend's daughter.
"Thank you Sir," Yui smiled slightly.
"Colonel, we should go prepare; excuse us." Sagiri saluted them along with Komaki before they took their leave.
"So, that was the Yuuya Bridges you talked highly about?" Eiji smiled knowingly.
"S-Sir, please don't you go misunderstanding things too." Yui blushed and looked away, frowning.
Eiji laughed and patted Yui's head, "it's good to see you have not given up. Though I would have liked to talk to him." Mira…is he? Eiji closed his eyes and sighed. Thoughts for another time.
Yui sighed but could not deny the comfort of her adoptive Uncle's hand on her head. "Uncle," she sighed exasperatedly.
"Right, right," Eiji grinned. "Well, I need to go prepare. Take care of yourself out there, Yui." Eiji placed a firm hand on her shoulder.
"You too, Uncle," Yui smiled, putting her hand over his and squeezing it.
Sometime later, Takeru rounded up the girls in a tent provided for them. "First things first!" Takeru clapped his hands. "I want to congratulate all of you. Isn't that right, Sargeant Jinguuji?" Takeru smirked at Marimo.
She, in turn, sighed and shook her head. "What 2nd Lieutenant Shirogane means to say, under exceptional circumstances. UN 11th Forces command has decided to grant all of you your commissions. The paperwork will be submitted at a later time. However, you are all now soldiers of the UN 11th Forces. Congratulations, 2nd Lieutenants!" Marimo saluted them all.
The girls looked unsure how to react; given the circumstances, Takeru wouldn't blame them. "Look, I know this isn't how you all expected to get your commissions. But, in my book, I think you guys are well into earning your spurs. But today, the enemy of humanity is knocking at the gates. So whatever happened yesterday, put it behind you." Takeru sighed, "I know that's hard, and honestly, you'll see a lot of other people doing the opposite. But we're the UN; we represent the united front of humanity. It's our job to go out there and show them nationality and creed don't matter. Were the protectors of all mankind!" Takeru threw his hand out, sweeping it across the room.
"You're right," Chizuru walked up to Takeru and saluted. "2nd Lieutenant Sakaki Chizuru, reporting for duty!"
The girls looked at Chizuru before finding their own resolve. Meiya walked up to Chizuru and silently saluted before Tama, Ayamine, and Mikoto followed suit. "We won't back down, not now!" Meiya proclaimed.
"Not when Shirogane acted so cool," Ayamine said.
"Takeru-san, please keep watching over us!" Tama puffed her chest up.
"Takeru, when did you become such a grown-up!" Mikoto teased.
"Hey," Takeru didn't raise to their bait. "I'm glad you've found your nerve. But the BETA aren't like anything we've faced before. We haven't started simulated battles with the BETA yet, so you'll have to face them in live combat." Takeru looked them all in the eye. "The BETA don't retreat, they don't feel fear, they don't tire, they. Never. Stop." Takeru closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "We will do everything in our power to help our comrades. But I want you to understand not everyone is going to make it. We won't be able to save everyone, and you're going to hear a lot of people die screaming." Takeru narrowed his eyes dangerously. "The BETA will tear a TSF to pieces in minutes. Sometimes, they won't even get that far and tear a Surface Pilot out of their cockpit and eat him alive. All the while, the poor soul is gonna scream and beg for help the entire time before the BETA tear out his lungs to eat them." Takeru shook his head, "no matter how much it hurts, I want you to remember the words I'm going to tell you. Do not let a comrade die like that. If you can't help them, then there is nothing left to do for them than grant them mercy. Fire a 120mm shell through their cockpit."
"Takeru!" Chizuru gasped, horrified at the prospect.
"Fighting the BETA isn't for the faint of heart," Marimo finally spoke up. "Shirogane is right; I expect you all to do the same for me if the time comes." Marimo nodded solemnly. "Remember what I told you during your first TSF lesson?"
"The 8 minutes of death," Tama gulped, but her eyes remained determined.
"That's right," Takeru nodded, "I expect all of you to overcome those 8 minutes of death. Once you do, I promise to consider you all my equals!" Takeru nodded.
"!" The girls gasped before looking at one another. Chizuru nodded first and swallowed a lump in her throat. "We'll do everything in our power to meet your expectations!"
Takeru smiled at them and put his hand over his heart. "I know you can do it, so stick with me, and we'll make it through." I won't lose you again. I won't let any of you die! Takeru made himself a mental promise. "Now, we're to be embedded with the Special Task Force A-01 Valkyries for this operation. We will comprise a special Squadron that will be used as reinforcements for the Absolute Defense Line." Takeru then detailed the battle plan laid out and their role in it. They would be part of Jeager 2 Squadron in charge of the secondary defense line at Lake Biwa. "Alright, everyone, get to you TSFs. We're gonna be in forced sleep until it's time to deploy."
"Yes Sir!" The girls saluted, and Takeru and Marimo returned the favor. They quickly scrambled to their TSFs.
"Good luck out there, Shirogane," Marimo spoke up after they were alone. "I'll be entrusting their lives to you now."
"Don't worry. I think they can handle it." Takeru smiled at Marimo. Then Marimo saluted, and Takeru returned the gesture. "I'll get them all back home."
Imperial Navy 3rd Fleet Yamato Battleship 06:00 hours
Captain Todokoro of the Yamato stood on his ship's Bridge. All around, his sailors moved to prepare for the battle of their lives. "Captain, the Musashi is on the horn, it's for you." The Radioman smiled.
Captain Todokoro chuckled and grabbed the receiver, "eager, aren't you Iguchi-kun? I suppose we all are. This is where we make up for our failure."
"Ah, Abe-kun was just saying the same thing," Captain Iguchi chuckled over the radio.
"Captain, BETA have entered effective range!" An operator shouted.
"Well, let's show our enemy a proper welcome this time, Iguchi-kun," Todokoro hummed and glowered at the distant shoreline.
"Yes, let's not be improper hosts," the old Captain chuckled. "Godspeed Todokoro-kun." The transmission was cut, and Todokoro calmly put the receiver down. His heart beat faster, and his mind was racing. But, it wouldn't do to show the youngsters under his command an old man's worries. Instead, he fixed the crew with a calm stare. "3rd Fleet, spare not a single shell. Show these monsters the resolve of the Imperial Japanese Navy!"
"Aye aye Captain!" the crew sounded off smartly.
Outside, the massive guns of the Yamato swiveled south towards the mainland. "Turrets 1 through 4 loaded with HE shells, targets are clustered for maximum effectiveness. Maximum ranger of 50 kilometers."
"All ships are reporting a ready status on your command Captain Todokoro." The Operator turned to the old Captain.
Todokoro closed his eyes and then extended his hand forward. "Fire!"
The Operator gave a smirk and a thumbs-up before returning to his station. "All ships, guns, guns, guns!" The Yamato's 16-inch guns cracked with a thunderous clap, and all ships followed in a cacophony of war. Kilometers away, the first Destroyer class peeked through the Kami shore. The Air was filled with piercing whistles before countless explosions tore BETA apart and sizzled the water into vapor. Shortly after, missiles hit, exploding on impact. For the next hour, hell rained on the BETA. But, the alien invaders continued their march forward as the periodic lulls between volleys allowed the herd to march onto the mainland. Further east, the 4th and 6th fleets prepared for the BETA landing at Oda.
Second Defense Line Jeager 2 Squadron 10:00 hours
Takeru rubbed his temples and shook his head to clear the cobwebs. Forced sleep is the god damn worse. Always makes you feel like the night after a bender. Takeru groaned and powered up his TSF from low-power mode. "This is 2nd Lieutenant Shirogane, rise and shine sleeping beauties," Takeru smirked and rolled his shoulders around.
"Awa," Tama lamented, "why am I so groggy?"
"It's the forced sleep, can't help the grogginess," Chizuru sighed and donned her spectacles.
"Mm," Ayamine yawned, stretching in her cockpit.
"I am awake as well," Meiya responded before yawning. "Excuse me," she blushed, embarrassed.
"Alright, get yourself sorted; I'll talk to the Captain." Takeru nodded and switched lines. "Captain, you awake?"
"Have been for an hour now," Michiru's face showed up in Takeru's display. You're just in time. I got an update on our situation."
"Good or bad?" Takeru pursed his lips.
"Good, but that's subject to change at any moment." Michiru smiled slightly at him.
"Laser Class?" Takeru raised a brow.
"None yet," Michiru shook her head, and as she said this, Takeru watched vapor trails streak across the early morning skies.
"Air strikes are still on track and doing gods work out there." Michiru nodded, "but that's liable to change at any moment. We're expecting the BETA vanguard to reach Killbox Charlie first."
"So the IJA get to wet their swords first," Takeru thought about the third defense line. He also thought about that man. The fact he was leading the 16th Royal Guard Regiment on this made Takeru apprehensive. That man didn't make a move unless it benefitted him. Yuuhi, please be careful. Takeru looked at his hand with Yuuhi's ribbon tied around it. Takeru closed his hand into a fist and frowned. A problem for another day, let's focus on what can be done.
"Alright, all Jeager Flights report in!" Michiru finally said after 30 minutes to allow everyone the chance to get up.
"Flight Bravo reporting," Takeru quipped.
"Flight Charlie reporting," Misae smirked.
"Flight Delta reporting," Yuuya from the 66th reported.
"Flight Echo reporting," Tsukuyomi bowed her head respectfully.
"Flight Foxtrot reporting," A young IJA Eishi gulped nervously.
"Good. As you may have noticed, our Squadron is larger than average. However, Command insists we aren't a Battalion. Still, this will work to our advantage. This way, we can work on supporting the second defense line in multiple places. Accordingly, I will divide all flights into Independent Squadrons. Given how some of us have never worked together, I shall prioritize the Flights that have for ease of cohesion. Therefore, Flight Bravo and Flight Charlie will make Squadron 2, Flight Delta and Echo will be Squadron 3, and Finally, Flight Foxtrot and my Flight will be squadron 1." Isumi informed everyone and updated the data link accordingly. "Everyone deploy to your assigned squadrons in Arrowhead 1 formation and wait for further orders."
"Roger!" All Flights replied in unison.
Takeru sat back in his seat and sighed. Looks like I'll be commanding a Squadron again. I wonder if Watanabe and Yuki are on the Kyoto defense line? Well, whatever. I guess now we sit and wait. Takeru gripped his controls and looked ahead. The battle for Japan had only just started.
"Shirogane."
Takeru jumped slightly when Yuuko's portrait showed up on his display. "Secure line? What's wrong, Sensei?" Takeru narrowed his eyes.
"It's nothing so serious," Yuuko hummed. "Well, no, it is serious, but to put it simply. We have an opportunity, and I will need you for this."
"Roger, what do you want me to do," Takeru gripped his controls.
"A few things, but we'll get to the second one afterward. First, an update on Alternative IV's progress." Yuuko frowned. "Thanks to those equations, I am on the verge of completing Alternative IV's primary purpose. The completion of a parallel quanton computing unit. I call it the 00 Unit, the 00 Unit will be completed in a few days, and thanks to you and Kasumi, we have a… somewhat agreeable circumstances. The 00 Unit will still need to be calibrated after the battle. But right now in its current stage it can be used. However, the 00 Unit needs to be used with a weapon we acquired from the Americans."
"The GX unit you were talking with Yoroi about?" Takeru recalled the conversation.
"Yes, you see, the pro-Alternative IV members from America used the 66th Tactical Battalion to get me two vital pieces to help with Alternative IV. The first piece was picked up at Yukon, Alaska, and the second at Kamchatka. With that second piece, the operation of the 00 Unit might be more viable." Yuuko sighed, "that second link, however, requires the survival of someone on the battlefield."
"Who?" Takeru raised a brow.
"Keep in mind that while already imperative, your survival is now doubly so. The 00 Unit cannot be tuned by anyone else but yourself, Shirogane." Yuuko glared at Takeru.
"Right," Takeru nodded firmly.
"Second, it is imperative you make sure 1st Lieutenant Yuuya Bridges survives, no matter what."
Takeru gasped, "Bridges? What does he have to do with this?"
"It is a condition I agreed to for the sake of the 00 Unit." Yuuko sighed.
"Right, I got questions, but I'll wait until after the battle." Takeru nodded.
"Good; keep in mind the Americans already finished the GX unit; it only requires assembly and fine-tuning. Something we can and will do under pressure." Yuuko explained, crossing her arms.
"I gotta ask," Takeru hummed, "what changed the American's mind on getting you the GX unit?" Takeru raised a brow.
"You did," Yuuko smirked. "The XM3 is a powerful bargaining chip; with that said, please know the Americans will have their eyes on us today. Everyone using the XM3 will have their data sent to the Americans." Yuuko shrugged, "a small price to pay, but also, I will be using the data to bargain with the Japanese for something else later on."
"So, we're really gonna see this GX unit deployed?" Takeru frowned.
"It all depends on how you all do," Yuuko closed her eyes. "If the Absolute Defense Line falls before the 3rd day, I'm afraid Alternative IV will be finished."
Takeru gasped before gritting his teeth, "we'll hold; don't you worry about that, Sensei!"
"Good, the Japanese are putting their all into this, but keep an eye on the Americans as well." Yuuko glared. "The 66th Battalion is all well and good, but the Alternative V supporters could be anywhere on the 7th Fleet. So I wouldn't put it past them to do something to push their plans forward."
"Understood; ensure the survival of Yuuya Bridges, and hold for at least 3 days to let you complete the 00 Unit and get the GX combat ready. I won't let you down, Sensei!"
"You've shown yourself to be a reliable partner Shirogane," Yuuko smirked. "I don't see a reason to doubt you now." Yuuko paused before looking at him seriously, "get it done, Shirogane, for all mankind."
"Understood," Takeru gave Yuuko a smirk and mock salute. With that, Yuuko cut the transmission. Takeru closed his eyes, thinking of everything at stake. Life keeps getting more complicated. Damn, I almost wish I'd stayed in my world…almost. Takeru smirked to himself.
Third Defense Line 13:00 hours
Sagiri snapped his eyes open as an alarm blared inside his cockpit. No more time to meditate on what's to come. It's due or die.
CODE 991
"BETA entering sensor range, running herd scans." Colonel Iwaya came alive on the radio. "10, no, make that 15,000 and counting." Colonel Iwaya was quiet for a second. "Final count 24,000, a Division size herd. All IJA elements maintain the Defense Line no matter the cost. 1st Lieutenant Komaki and her Jeager 3 Squadron will react to threats as needed. Keep an eye on ammo and propellant. The Support Line will send supply runs regularly as supplies become available."
"Roger!" several IJA officers replied.
"This is it; this is the fight you were born for. For those of you who have never fought the BETA, welcome to hell, ladies and gentlemen. Remember to survive the 8 minutes of death, and you will become an invincible warrior on the battlefield!" Colonel Iawaya exclaimed.
"Yes Sir!" The IJA forces replied with fire in their hearts.
Sagiri smiled slightly; he had no qualms against Colonel Iwaya. Still, his willingness to work with foreigners had made Sagari warry of him. But where it counted, the Lieutenant Colonel was, first and foremost, an IJA soldier to the core. For this alone, Sagiri didn't resist his appointment of the Kyoto defense line command. Let's defend our country, Lieutenant Colonel Iwaya Eiji.
"Support artillery and missiles away!" the radio crackled to life. Distant thumps reached sagiri's ears, followed by the scream of artillery shells and the vapor trail of missiles. Then, after a few seconds, the horizon lit up with flashes of explosions. "Confirm good hit on targets; saturated bombardment will continue for as long as possible. Godspeed Eishis!" With that, the support line officer cut the transmission.
"Captain, the enemy vanguard is closing in. Several destroyer classes confirmed!" an Eishi moved his TSF next to Sagiri.
"Roger, Storm Vanguards, move in!" Sagiri ordered and blasted off along with all Storm Vanguard elements to intercept the BETA Destroyers. As they drew close, the artillery explosions grew louder, and the BETA stampede ever onward. Sagiri drew his sword as he reached the Destroyers. The first Destroyer pounced on Sagiri, but he dodged left, raking his sword along its belly. The Destroyer slid forward in a trail of blood and innards. Instantly Sagiri boosted up above another Destroyer, firing a 120mm explosive shell into its backside. The Destroyer's back exploded into chunks killing it. Sagiri, however, was already moving on to the next target. His blade was a blur as he danced around the charging BETA, killing them in scores.
"The Captain's something else," an Eishi smirked with an uneasy smile. "Come on, let's not get left behind!"
"Roger!" The rest of the Storm Vanguard flew in, guns blazing and swords swinging. They began thinning the Destroyer numbers at a steady rate, so the Kyoto Defense Line was held.
Second defense Line 13:43 hours
The BETA arrived an hour after they hit Killbox Charlie. Alfred, in charge of the Lake Biwa defense line, immediately ordered all support elements to hammer the BETA across the lake. Initial scans had placed the herd at 26,000. The saturated support strike had been devastatingly effective. So when the Destroyer Vanguard emerged from Lake Biwa on their side. The defenders were already there, flying above the water, shooting the Destroyers as they merged. Alfred, with all four AMWS aimed forward, tore the BETA apart. "Maintain firing screen; once you reach 15% ammo count, switch out!"
"Roger!" the American and UN Surface Pilots responded, while the IJA forces reluctantly grunted in agreement. Soon, the fruits of their labor colored Lake Biwa crimson, and the Destroyer's corpses started piling up and impeding their comrades.
"Keep it up!" Alfred encouraged the men as his ammo count reached 15%. "Moving to resupply, switch out!" Alfred blasted forward, heading towards the line. They had set up on a ridge line some 400 meters from the lake shoreside. The elevated ground proved perfect to conserve propellant, allowing the defenders the advantage of firing from above without flying. The ruins of old cities along the lake also provided excellent cover. All and all, Alfred would call the operation a turkey shoot. At least until the god damn laser class shows up. Alfred pursed his lips in anticipation. For now, the secondary defense line was holding.
Yokohama Base 16:00 hours
Paul Radhabinod hummed, watching the tactical display before him. The entire Absolute Defense Line data link was fed directly toward Yokohama Base. Paul crossed his arms behind his back and hummed. "Situation report," he calmly commanded.
"First, second, and third defense lines are holding. No casualty reports so far."
"The Imperial Navy resupply ships have arrived and are in the process of resupplying all fleets."
"All bombers have returned and are undergoing maintenance and resupply."
"Sattelite reconnaissance has detected a Second wave approaching Killbox Alpha. Preliminary scans put it at another Division size herd."
"Imperial Navy reports no sighting of Fortress class BETA, as well as Laser and Heavy Laser class."
"Wait, something is happening!"
Paul frowned and looked at the Operator, who sounded panicked. "Proceed, Lieutenant," he nodded.
"The BETA that landed at Oda have moved further inland but are not participating in the assault!" She panicked, typing away at her station.
"Do we have a satellite imagine?"
"Bringing it up now!" She tapped a few keys and displayed the feed on the primary monitor.
Paul looked over the BETA as they moved about. Tank class and Grappler Class were digging in the ground. But, what really made everyone feel the fear of god was the swarm of BETA covering something with their bodies. It was emitting a faint light, and everyone feared what it was. "Get me XO Kouzuki; tell her it's an emergency."
About ten minutes later, Yuuko rushed into the command center. Paul didn't even bother explaining and had the footage played back to her. Yuuko glowered at the screen and crossed her arms. I see; this time, they're playing it safe. "How old is the footage?"
"Satellite caught it this morning at 04:00 hours." Paul shifted his eyes at her. "By your reaction, I can assume our fears are assured."
"Yes," Yuuko crossed her arms, baring her teeth and digging her nails into her bicep. "We're looking at the beginning of Objective 27." Yuuko closed her eyes, thinking of Shirogane and the 00 Unit. "They're building a Hive."
"How long until the 00 Unit and the GX are operational?" Paul turned fully toward Yuuko.
"…" Yuuko looked at the Hive. She reached into her pocket and grabbed a small square box. She pressed on the corner end of it, and a slot slid open. She dropped two pills onto her palm and swiftly downed them. "I'll be working overtime and will shoot for 2 days. Though I'm afraid, 3 days will be the optimal time to ensure everything is in working order."
"Then we will buy you 3 days, Professor Kouzuki, we of the UN forces," Paul paused. "No, all of us, American, Japanese, and UN, fighting for the future of mankind, will deliver you the three days required."
"I have the utmost confidence in them, General," Yuuko smirked and took her to leave.
As Yuuko left, Paul looked back at the forming Hive. The data link had already labeled it Hive 27, Maniwa Hive. Even if the fleets moved towards the shore, they would still be out of range. Our current hope is an air strike, and the hope Laser class doesn't show up. Paul sighed and looked down at his tactical display. In the end, Professor Kouzuki, you are our only hope. "Dispatch the bombers as soon as possible, and have them destroy Objective 27."
"Sir, the 1st Air Support Group is fueled and ready. At the maximum speed, they can arrive within the hour."
"Then have them deploy on the double. If the BETA gets that reactor below ground, things will be much more complicated." Paul scowled at humanity's enemy.
"Understood, and General," the Operator turned on her chair. "Should we inform everyone about the Hive?"
Paul closed his eyes, "no, we will not inform anyone until we have a proper countermeasure."
"Yes Sir!" The Operator turned back to continue her job.
Secondary Supply Line 17:00 hours
Yui's gold Takemikazuchi touched down on a clearing. With the front holding steady, Captain Isumi implemented a rotation to allow everyone to rest and stretch their legs. "This is 1st Lieutenant Takamura, requesting maintenance."
"Roger, 1st Lieutenant, moved to truck 26, and we'll take it from there."
The radio went silent, and Yui moved her TFS to the truck. After disembarking, she was pointed to a tent near the center of the FOB. There she found a hastily set up mess under an awning. Yuuhi felt her tummy rumble and promptly got in line for a meal. She grabbed the synthetic mackerel on offer and sat on a long empty table. Well, I can't say I missed the synthetic food at Yukon.
"Ah, 1st Lieutenant Takamura,"
Yui looked up at the feminine voice that called to her. A woman with short blonde-haired walked up to her table with a food tray. She saluted with her free hand, and Yui returned the gesture. "2nd Lieutenant Thesleff Irma, correct?" Yui smiled at the woman.
"Yes," Irma chuckled, "I'm still not used to the eastern last name, first name, second manner."
"Ah sorry, I wasn't thinking," Yui apologized and bowed her head.
"Oh, it's no bother. Do you mind if I join you?" Irma nodded at the empty table.
"Not at all," Yui shook her head and gestured to the seat in front of her.
Irma sat down, nodding her thanks. "So, do you mind me asking about you and Yuuya's history together?"
Yui sighed exasperated, "2nd Lieutenant Shirogane is behind this, isn't he? Yuuya and I are," she paused. What are Yuuya and I? I suppose we are comrades, though we never could get much closer, what with all that happened. Yui gasped and shook her head, "colleagues, yes, we are good colleagues."
Irma's smile broadened, "I see; I was under the impression you two were much closer than that."
"As I've said, 2nd Lieutenant Shirogane is spreading misconceptions." Yui closed her eyes and crossed her arms.
"I can't say I've had the pleasure of talking to the 2nd Lieutenant you're talking about. But, Yuuya always walked around with a Katana he said was given to him by a special person."
Yui felt a strange light feeling in her chest. "O-oh," Yui blushed, looking at her untouched food.
"So it was yours?" Irma's blue eyes narrowed slightly.
"It was meant as a promise of sorts," Yui said, closing her eyes. "A promise to continue doing our best and return to the XFJ Program back on track."
"As I recall, there was an incident at Yukon Base. Yuuya couldn't say much on it as it was deemed classified information." Irma hummed in thought, taking a bite of her food.
"Yes, I'm afraid I cannot disclose anything beyond its name either." Yui sighed and thought about her futile efforts.
"That's alright; I just wondered what must have happened for you to have such an impact on Yuuya." Irma shrugged, eating more of her food.
"Did he talk about me?" Yui looked down at her food, poking at it with her chopsticks.
"Not directly, but I learned fast that's just the type of man he is," Irma chuckled.
"Yes," Yui smiled, thinking about him. "He used to be much more upfront and confrontational if you can believe it." Yui laughed, thinking of their initial meeting and their rather antagonistic relationship.
"Really?" Irma hummed, finishing her food. "He's a sincere and straightforward man in my eyes, but it is clear he's lived through much in his life." Irma looked at Yui and could not help the small stab of jealousy. Ah, what is there to be done regarding matters of the heart. "It seems your quite lucky to have grown as close with Yuuya," Irma shrugged, placing her fork on her tray. "But, you say you and him are just colleagues, yes?"
Yui suddenly felt her warrior instincts kick in. she almost felt like she was suddenly in her TSF, and someone had a lock on her. "Y-yes," Yui gulped, looking at Irma, unsure.
"Well, that's a relief," Irma grabbed her tray and stood up, "don't worry, as his wingman, it's my job to take care of Yuuya." Irma grinned devilishly, "I plan to take good care of him. After all, I plan to have him meet my mother and siblings after our deployment here is done."
"I-I see," Yui smiled tightly.
"Well, I'll leave you to it, 1st Lieutenant," Irma turned to leave.
"2nd Lieutenant Theslaff," Yui suddenly said, her eyes hard as steel.
"I want to show Japan to Yuuya, so I hope you understand if that shall take precedence over meeting your family." Yui closed her eyes and bowed to her opponent respectfully.
Irma looked over her shoulder and hummed. "colleagues, huh?" Irma sighed and turned fully to Yui. She balanced her tray on the one hand and put her fist against her cocked hip. "Then to the victor goes the spoils, Yui Takamura."
"As are all matters in battle, Theslaff Irma." Yui acknowledged her challenge. With that, Irma turned and disappeared into the crowd. Yui looked down at her food, unsure how to feel about her and Irma's discussion. It doesn't matter, I've more pressing matters to think about. Yui grabbed her chopsticks, finally ready to eat. She ate a mackerel and noticed she forgot to grab a drink.
"Here," a green tea drink pack waved in front of her.
"Oh," Yui turned and saw Yuuya look at her with a little smirk on his lips. "Yuuya, thank you," Yui grabbed the tea and took a sip. "Have you eaten yet?"
Yuuya sat down next to her, plopping a tray down. "Ugh, I did not miss this synthetic stuff after leaving Yukon."
Yui chuckled behind her fist before taking another bite of her food. "Are you saying you prefer field rations?"
Yuuya shuddered and took a bite of his food. "Never mind, this is the best damn meal I ever had." Yuuya had grabbed the mackerel like Yui, though he was using a fork. I wonder, would he be mad if I asked him about it? Yui hummed, watching Yuuya eat.
"You okay?" Yuuya raised a brow at Yui.
"Nothing," Yui blushed and went back to her food.
"You didn't say anything before when you cooked for me," Yuuya chuckled. "Never learned to use the sticks. My mom wanted to teach me but," Yuuya sighed. Thinking of all his previous anger and the relentless torment of growing up half Japanese.
"I can teach you," Yui mumbled to herself.
"Sure," Yuuya shrugged. "I guess it's about time I try to learn something about being Japanese." Yuuya grabbed the chopsticks he was given along with his fork. "Alright, how do I hold these things?" Yuuya frowned at the sticks.
"Like this," Yui brought up her hand, showing him.
"Gr," Yuuya growled, trying to imitate her. "I don't think I'm getting it."
"No, you have to hold one between your pointer and index finger," Yui instructed.
"Er, like this?" Yuuya's scowl deepened as he pinched the stick too hard and couldn't align it properly.
"You're holding it too hard Yuuya," Yui frowned slightly and sighed.
"Well, sorry!" Yuuya grunted, using his other hand to adjust the chopsticks.
I plan to have him meet my mother and siblings after our deployment here is done
2nd Lieutenant Theslaff's voice resonated in Yui's mind. Yui got a determined look and put her chopsticks down. "Here, let me show you how it's done." Yui gently grabbed his hand in hers.
"Yui," Yuuya said her name, looking down at her hands. It was odd; he felt a weird sense of calm come over him when she touched him. Which he found strange, as both of them were in fortified suits. Yet despite this, he somehow felt like her hands were soft underneath. Yuuya smiled and chuckled mentally. I doubt she has the hands of a soldier; he looked at Yui moving his fingers around the chopsticks. Each touch felt gentle but had firm guidance that he felt adequately expressed her personality. From getting to butt heads with her, Yuuya felt he had come to know the Iron Samurai that lay beneath the aloof exterior she presented. Like a beautifully sheathed Katana eh?
"Yuuya," Yui frowned, annoyed at him. It's embarrassing having to hold your hands like this. The least you could do is not space out on me!
"Yui," Yuuya reached up with his other hand placing it over one of hers.
"Huh!?" Yui gasped, feeling her blush spread far across her face. "Y-yes?"
"I was wondering," Yuuya looked into her lilac eyes. "After all of this, would you show me around Japan?" Yuuya closed his eyes and thought of the man who was his father. "Can you also come with me when I confront my old man?" Agh, I feel so stupid for asking that!
Yui gasped, her embarrassment forgotten. "Yuuya," Yui put her other hand above his squeezing it back. "I would like to show you Japan and hope you might glimpse how I see it." She looked into his eyes. "Also, if my presence is of any help, I would be honored to help you with your estranged father."
"Thanks," Yuuya smiled at her. "I already saw him, and he didn't recognize me. So I'm assuming he doesn't remember me," Yuuya pursed his lips. "Or, he never knew about me. I honestly don't know, which pisses me off more." Mom, you always defended him when I called him a bastard. So why, why didn't he ever see us? Was I really just a mistake?
"Yuuya," Yui reached up in a moment of boldness and cupped his cheek. Though awkward with his headset on, Yuuya leaned into her touch.
"Yui," Yuuya felt his heart beating faster in his chest. What am I doing? Cryska, is this okay? Am I allowed to feel like this for someone else? It's Yui, someone I respect and have come to care about a great deal. Yuuya's eyes closed halfway, and he leaned closer to Yui. She locked her eyes on Yuuya's, and the chopsticks in his hand clattered on the table.
Their fingers threaded together, and what she had thought was lost after Yukon returned. When he had escaped with the Scarlet twins in the Shiranui Phase 2, she had given him up. I have denied it before my Uncle and her Highness. But, if I really have let go, why did 1st Lieutenant Tehsleff's words bother me so? Why did I rise to her challenge? Yuuya, you're so close now. Even in the midst of the battlefield for my homeland, I still want you by my side. "Yuuya," Yui let the emotions burst, and she leaned forward throwing caution to the wind. Everything ceased to matter for a tiny moment. Just this one instance, with all the loss she had suffered and the feelings she sealed away in Alaska, Yui pressed her lips against Yuuyas. His lips were rough, and he massaged them against hers gently while his other hand rested against her hip. They squeezed their hands tightly, and Yui felt a tear of sheer happiness run down her cheek. Please forgive my weakness and let me be just a woman and the man she loves.
After a minute, the two parted from one another. Yui felt Yuuya's intense stare and blushed, finally breaking eye contact and looking down at her lap. "S-so," Yui broke the silence.
"Y-yeah," Yuuya rubbed the back of his neck. "Well, uh," Yuuya closed his mouth, not willing to sound more like an idiot. It felt good, not just physically, but like things would be okay.
"S-so," Yui repeated before clearing her throat. "What do we do now?" Yui fidgeted in her seat before looking at their still-clasped hands.
"I don't know, honestly." Yuuya laughed but kept his eyes firmly on Yui.
"Yuuya," Yui swallowed a lump in her throat. "Let's survive this," she said, bringing reality back to the foreground. "So we can do things properly," Yui insisted and looked Yuuya in the eyes again.
"Yeah," Yuuya thought about his mother again and the reality that he had nothing back home. His life had been the US Army after her, he dedicated everything to the service of his country. But, when he thought about it, with Yui here with him he didn't feel lonely, and while he had ignored it in the past and put his whole mind into his career, Yuuya was alone. It wasn't until he arrived at Yukon with Vincent that he began letting people in. Chobi, VG, and stella. Yuuya had finally made friends after his fallout with Leon and his distancing from Sharon. This is okay, right? To want to be with Yui is okay. But why do I feel like kind of a bastard about it? My feelings for Yui are real. The fact I want to never let her go is proof of that. Yuuya took a deep breath and looked back at Yui. "Hey, after this battle, wanna go on a real date?"
Yui felt her heart beat against her chest madly. She straightened up, feeling her cheeks burn bright. "Y-yes!" She exclaimed slightly louder than she intended. Yui coughed and tried to regain her composure. "Yes, let's do that," Yui smiled. "I think it will be a good celebration after we save Japan." Yui felt a warm feeling spread from her chest all over.
Before Yuuya could say anything else, an alarm blared across the FOB. "All Eishis, report to your TSFs for emergency scramble. I say again, all Eishis report to your TSFs emergency scramble!"
"Yuuya!" Yui and Yuuya stood up at the same time. "I'll see you on the battlefield," she squeezed his hand and stepped in.
Yuuya stepped in with her, and their lips met again in a soft, chaste kiss. "Don't worry, I don't plan on dying. Let's go kick ass out there!" Yuuya smirked and stepped back, and saluted Yui. She returned the sign of respect, and both ran opposite each other to their respective TSFs. Yui was the first to reach her Takemikazuchi. She was given the all-clear to board and scramble as soon as possible. As soon as she was secured in her cockpit and her TSF powered up, Yui contacted Tsukuyomi. "Echo 2 to Echo 1, do you read?"
"I read you Echo 2, are you aware of what is going on?" Tsukuyomi's face appeared on Yui's display. Yui shook her head but looked visibly worried. Tsukuyomi sighed, closing her eyes, "It's best if you see for yourself. Updating the data link now."
Ukyo Ward 15:00 hours earlier.
The UN 1st Air Support Group flew in standard arrowhead formation. Captain Iga Itoki gripped his control stick tensely. They had deployed out of Yokohama and were en route to bomb what UN Command called Objective 27. Things were going smoothly so far, which had everyone on edge. Any operation against the BETA that was going this smoothly worried everyone involved.
"Drake 01, this is Command Post; turn back this instant!"
Itoki gritted his teeth, "Drake 01 to Command Post, say again?"
"Itoki, get out of there, Laser Class!"
Itoki opened his mouth to order an immediate retreat but was cut off when a beam of light cut his wingman in half before exploding. "Shit, evasive actions, deploy countermeasures!" Itoki twisted his control stick, banking left deploying several canisters that exploded into heavy metal clouds. "All Air elements drop ordinance and RTB!"
LASER WARNING
"Fuck!" Itoki jerked his control stick, barely missing a laser. But all around him, beams of light everyone apart. "Shit!"
LASER WARNING
"Shiiiit!" Itoki tried evading again before a laser caught his left engine, causing him to spiral out of control. "I'm hit, I'm going down, I'm!" Itoki was cut off as a second laser beam exploded his spiraling bomber into a ball of fire.
A massive hole 176 meters in diameter had opened up on the ground at the Ukyo Ward. A new Vanguard of Destroyer Class poured onto the field from the hole. Followed closely by Tank, Grappler, and Fortress Class. From the Fortress Class, platoons of Laser Class spread out, stopping briefly to shoot down the last of the 1st Air Support Group. Then, as soon as the skies were clear, they hopped back on the Fortress Class BETA and stomped to the Absolute Defense Line.
Yokohama Base 15:15 hours
"They're gone Sir. The entire 1st Air Support Group has been shot down." The Operator closed her eyes tightly. "Preemptive readings caught at least a company-size Laser Class herd. The new BETA coming from the breach is predicted as a Corps-size herd."
"I see, have all standby forces deploy at once. Then contact the Commander in Chief at Tokoyo." Paul sighed, allowing no emotion to show.
"Yes Sir!" The Operator put her grief aside and did as told.
"Good; cancel all further air support and inform the units at the Absolute Defense Line." Paul sighed again and looked at the tactical display as the new BETA herd approached the defenders.
