THE CONNECTION
- CHAPTER 19 -
"Starting a new journey takes courage. Beautiful destinations have rough and rocky roads. Persevering is the only way to go." A fair young lady with bright sunset orange hair laid on her bed with a book on her stomach, pondering about the words she had just read out loud. After meeting with the head of the Kuchiki family, she received unexpectedly a present from him. It was a book together with a beautiful pink rose. In his letter, he thanked her for her company and taking the trouble to visit him. He wanted to show his care for her and apologize for all the terrible things she went through, knowing that a present could never be enough to compensate for the damage done to her.
Nevertheless, Orihime could appreciate the gesture and was beyond grateful for the book. It was a book that contained a lot of old knowledge and wisdom, written by Shunsui Kyōraku, a world-famous writer, known throughout the whole country. The young girl had dreamed about owning a book from him and without Byakuya knowing, he gifted her a treasure. In the book he wrote a little note saying: I believe you will appreciate this very much because great minds think alike and connect in different ways than only words.
Orihime did not exactly know what he was referring to, but she was to him forever grateful. The book: do not fear your own path was teaching her so much, and she felt it was destined for her, written especially for her because of her own situation. Shunsui's beautiful writing perfectly described her thoughts, doubts, fears and for some odd reason her exact situation. How a writer like him could depict this in such details was such a mystery to her.
Since a few weeks, Orihime could feel her heart sway to different sides. Aizen still sent her letters, and Byakuya suddenly sent her a gift. It was because of Ichigo's warmth and sudden approach that she was able to lay her mind to rest. The orange protector and crown prince was working hard to make amends with his wife, despite withholding the truth about Kamari from her. If it was not for her husband, she might have made some decisions she would regret afterward.
"Hime, you seem to enjoy that book a lot." Ichigo appeared from the bathroom, ready to enter the bed. "I do. It had always been a dream of mine to own a book from the wonderful Shunsui-san. Every time I open this book, I feel like I'm enriching my brain with thoughts and wisdom only gained by experience." The orange head laid beside his wife, his eyes scanning the cover of the book.
"You never seemed the type to be engulfed in self-help books. I thought you were more into fiction and stuff." He positioned himself on the bed on his side, so he could admire the face of his wife, who was now pouting. "I'm not a little child anymore, you know… I am growing up, and I want to learn more about the world and about myself. It's good to expand your interests."
The Orihime speaking to Ichigo was indeed a different person compared to the woman he married a few years ago. He had noticed it when he approached her again to reconcile and mend their relationship. Orihime strictly drew a line between the two of them, saying she was not ready for any kind of intimacy and that she would appreciate it if he gave her the space she needed.
It was hard for Ichigo, but he accepted her terms because he knew he was in no position to complain or negotiate. But he couldn't deny it, each conversation and each little gentle touch, like holding her hand while ascending the steps, made his heart flutter. The way she fed her mind with knowledge and the genuine care she has for the royal subjects warmed his heart, but it also made the pit of guilt in his heart even bigger. Who could lie to such a wonderful woman? He truly did not deserve her.
"Since it's good to expand my interests, do you have any recommendations on what I should try as a new hobby?" His eyes had a playful gleam in them, which made Orihime chuckle in turn. "Umm, what about pottery? I heard that it has a relaxing effect on you when you mend the clay. Also, I think it would be good for you to explore more creative subjects. It might suit you more than you think."
The male laughed, turning his head to the ceiling. "You think so? I'm horrible at drawing, and I don't like wasting my time on things I'm not good at." He said, while recalling all the terrible drawings and sculptures he made while growing up. "Practice is what makes perfect Kurosaki-kun. You have to fail before you can succeed."
"I tried. That's not it. I just don't have a talent for these things, I think." A sad smile appeared on Orihme's face. "You could at least try, again…? There are more creative things than drawing." She mumbled, taking the book off her stomach and putting a pink rose petal in between pages before closing it and placing it on the nightstand.
"It can never hurt to try, can it?" His reply surprised Orihime, since she was so used to hearing rejection coming from his mouth. She simply nodded, the sad gleam changing into a brighter one. "Since we're talking about trying new things, what about breakfast tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m.? I don't have any early morning meetings, so it should be fine, right? Unless you have anything planned?"
The girl shook her head in agreement. "Let's have breakfast, Kurosaki-kun. It would be nice to spend a morning together after all this time. Your parents would be pleased as well." Ichigo turned his head to meet her gaze and smiled.
"Let's get some sleep, Orihime. Goodnight."
"Goodnight, Kurosaki-kun."
The following morning, the couple prepared for breakfast, with Ichigo leaving the room earlier than his wife to prepare some documents for the meeting after breakfast. Orihime was pampering herself as usual when a sweaty Momo came running through the door, out of breath and her hair disheveled.
"Momo-chan, what is the matter? You are panting, and your whole face is red." Momo was now resting her hands on her knees to catch her breath, but Orihime soon helped her to sit down on the couch and took a seat beside her.
"M-My lady, there is news!" Orihime tilted her head in confusion, not knowing what her personal maid tried to say. "News about what?" She barely asked before Momo pushed a letter in her face. It had a black seal which could only mean one thing, the letter came from Aizen Sosuke.
Never had Orihime opened a letter that fast in her life, scanning the contents of the letter.
To my dear Orihime,
In our last exchange, I reassured you that there was nothing to worry about and that I always succeed in what I want. Today I am happy and both honored to tell you that my words never fall to the ground and that the mission you gave me has been completed.
Your two and a half year old son, Kurosaki Kamari, who had been missing for almost 2 years, has been found and is taken into my care. The little fella, an exact lookalike of his father, is doing well. We are feeding him three meals a day. I truly wish I could go into detail about where we found him, but it would be best to discuss this in person.
Therefore, I, Aizen Sosuke, would like to formally invite you to the free state to visit my estate and to be reunited with your son. Please tell me when you are coming, so I can prepare for your coming immediately.
There is also another request, please bring your personal maid Hinamori Momo with you on your journey. She is familiar with the free state and can safely escort you.
Until we meet again, stay safe. I trust you will keep this between us.
Aizen Sosuke.
Chills were running over Orihime's body as a whirlwind of emotions was erupting inside her. On this glorious morning, she received the good news that he had found her son. A task that was even impossible for the Kurosaki army was made happen by an outsider like Sosuke. Her feeling was right. Aizen was a powerful man that could not be taken lightly, but for now, she was just happy that she ever got to meet him. It is because of him that she will be able to wrap her arms around her little boy.
She quickly wiped her tears as Momo tried to calm her down. "My lady! I'm so happy for you, but you can't break down now. Kurosaki-sama doesn't know about your contact with Aizen-san." Orihime nodded while containing the tears. It had been a long time since she felt this happy, but she knew that there was a bigger obstacle on her way. How was she going to ask Ichigo to leave the palace? "Momo-chan. Send a message as soon as possible to Aizen-sama that I will be there within three days." The maid nodded, taking out her little notebook to write down the details.
A half hour later, Orihime was seated across her husband, taking small bites of her breakfast. Her thoughts still on the letter she had just received. As always, she could ask Masaki for a favor to leave the castle again, but this time she did not wanted to involve Masaki. Even though Orihime trusted the woman with her life, she did not disclose her contact and the request she made of Aizen. She wanted it all to be a secret, until she is ready to tell it all to Masaki. This time, she needed to ask permission from her husband. They were getting along better anyway.
"Orihime, is the food not to your liking? You have been frowning like an old geezer for a while now." The female flinched and smiled sheepishly from embarrassment. "Ah, no! The food is beyond delicious, as always."
"Then why the frown and little appetite?"
"There has been something on my mind."
"You know you can tell me anything."
She nodded, chewing on her lower lip as she could feel her nervousness taking over.
"Kurosaki-kun, I've been thinking. It's almost 3 years since my brother's death, and I haven't even paid my respects since then. I feel really guilty about this for a while and that's why I would like to request a leave to visit my brother in his resting place."
Ichigo's happy eyes turned a tad serious as he kept on chewing before he answered. Memories of a crying Orihime paying respects to her brother coming to mind. "Hmm, it's been a while indeed. When do you wish to go? I'll personally escort you to your home village."
The auburn haired female quickly panicked and immediately said, "N-No…!" Ichigo frowned while looking at his wife, who seemed to be shocked herself from the sudden loud answer. A slight suspicion growing. "Why not?"
"W-Well…" The female started sweating, finding it hard to find the right words. "I feel like I should really do this on my own. Besides, you are a crown prince. It is not responsible to leave your duties to pay respects to my brother, a peasant of a little village."
"Your brother is not a peasant. How can you say that? He is your brother and therefore special to me. Orihime, I really don't mind going with you."
"I-I… I have been really sick these past years ever since Kamari has left us. Every day, I spent mourning about my son and forgot about my brother. Since I am in a better headspace, I would really like to visit my brother on my own. To pay my respects but most of all apologize for my behavior. I want it to be just between us, siblings."
Ichigo was at a loss for words as he knew the reason for Orihime's state of mind at that time. He wasn't even the reason for her getting better, it was all because of the new friends she made, according to his mother. "Orihime…."
His wife looked at him with tears in her eyes. Ichigo could tell she was upset, thinking about her brother. He closed his eyes for a moment and let out a deep exhale, as if he was letting go of all the tension in his body. "Alright, I'll let you go on your own, but I want you to return immediately after you paid your respects. I have some exciting news to share with you."
Orihime's tears dried up as she received his approval and bowed. "Thank you Kurosaki-kun. I truly appreciate your kindness. However, I do have an additional request. I would like to take my personal maid as my company. She is trained in martial arts and sword fighting, she will be a maid as well as a good knight, protecting me."
"Hinamori-chan?" His gaze shifted from the female with auburn hair to the brunette in the maid outfit, standing near the door. She was talking to the other maids who prepared the coffee and sweets for their breakfast. The girl had been Orihime's maid ever since she came to the castle. Never had he received a bad report from her, and even when Kamari was missing she was the first one to search for Orihime, worrying about her.
"Alright. I'll allow it." Ichigo's lips changed from a thin line to a bright and warm smile. Just like his mother told him, he would try and trust his wife more. Orihime returned his bright smile with a smile of her own. She hadn't felt so happy in a long time. Finally, she was going to meet her little angel after so long.
The next day, Hinamori Momo was leaving the castle gate, carrying a big suitcase to the trunk of the car. Orihime was still bidding her goodbye to her husband and parents-in-law. Isshin was usually busy, but felt he neglected Orihime lately and that it was his duty to say his goodbye's.
The king of the Kurosaki kingdom was standing next to his wife, while his daughter-in-law was standing in front of him. Ever since the reveal of her background, he found it hard to face her. A big secret weighing on his heart, but as a king, he had to rise above his emotions.
"Orihime-chan." Isshin said rather in a childish tone. "Please send my regards to your brother. Next time, I do hope you will let us visit him with you." He took her hand and planted a soft kiss on her hand. Orihime bowed down, feeling the same unease as the king. A familiar voice in her head accusing Kurosaki Isshin for the dead of her mother. The female never had any sort of attachment to her mother, but still, she felt uneasy, the reason to her unknown.
"Be careful Orihime. Be alert and don't miss us too much, okay?" It was Masaki who's voices chimed in like a worried mother, pulling the girl in a warm embrace. "Like Isshin said, we'll love to come next time." The princess smiled while returning the hug.
After the long hug, Orihime turned around and faced her husband, a small blush appearing on the apples of his cheeks. "You-You…." Ichigo stammered, feeling nervous as he looked away, his usual scowl appearing. "You look too stunning for a trip. Your beauty is blinding me." He muttered softly so that he and Orihime could be the only one to hear it.
Her heart made a jump as she heard his low, husky mutter and looked at his scowl. Her favorite feature of his, the most famous scowl in the entire kingdom. A giggle escaped her cherry pink lips, which made the scowl deepen. A light blush on Orihime's cheeks as she closed the distance and placed a kiss on Ichigo's cheek.
Her left hand rested on his chest as her lips were glued to his cheeks. His strong musk wood smell infiltrating her nose. She closed her eyes while taking in his scent before pulling away. "That is for being such a kind husband to me."
Then the unthinkable happened. Orihime tiptoed her way up to reach Ichigo's face and placed her lips on his rough, dry lips. Ichigo's eyes widened upon feeling her lips on his own, but he soon returned the kiss, carefully. Tingling sensations emerged in the bodies of both the male and female, but Orihime soon pulled away before Ichigo could grab her to deepen the kiss. She took a step back and stared right into Ichigo's dark chocolate eyes, showing his affection for her. "And that is for letting me visit my brother."
Isshin and Masaki their mouth both were shaped in a circle from shock, while Hisagi, the guard standing near them, was grinning. He certainly was going to tease a certain strawberry.
Orihime then bowed down before walking past Ichigo. As she passed him, a feeling of regret filled him, and he soon stopped her by taking her hand. She looked back in surprise, but felt herself being pulled in another hug. It was a firm and warm hug, one that made her think back to the first days they met.
"I'll miss you, Hime. Make sure to return home. You must come back. I have something really special for you waiting when you are back." He kissed her head and savored the moment with his wife. "I promise, I'll return, Ichigo." He smiled and unwrapped his hands, letting Orihime go.
The girl then waved to the people watching her and went to the car where Hinamori Momo was waiting to escort her to Aizen's estate.
Uliquiorra was in his quarters, handing out a bandage to a raven haired woman who was patching herself up. "I am truly delighted that we were able to meet, Arisawa-san. I'm positive that Orihime will think the same way." Green eyes were watching a female around 21 years old sitting on the floor, attending to her leg that was covered in blood caused by needle jabs. Upon hearing the name Orihime, her face shot up, her bloodshot eyes expanding. With all the strength, she could muster, she pushed herself up the ground and grabbed the pale man by his collar, pulling him in.
"Orihime is coming to a place like this? What will you do to her? Don't tell me she will be a servant here? This place is just as messed up as that other place!" Tatsuki couldn't contain her anger. Drops of saliva flying out of her mouth while she talked, landing on Uliquiorra's face. He didn't seem to mind as he experienced worse.
"It's already bad enough, I became like…. this!" She released the male and immediately her body dropped to the ground, her voice sounding dejected as tears welled up in her eyes. "If I barely made it, how… how will she survive?" Her lip quivered as she looked up at Ulquiorra, gripping the end of his cloak.
"Arisawa-san." His monotone voice made Tatsuki feel cold. It had always made her feel cold, ever since she was little. "Have some faith in Orihime. She's not that girl you protected back in Haiku. That little girl that you met crying in the valley is gone. I'm certain."
"How can you be so sure of that? I barely made it here, my parents barely made it. We are still alive, but our lives are ruined. The life in that facility was horrible. How can you be so certain that she is doing better?" The young adult was now crying. Tatsuki always hated to cry, but the pain she bore in her heart after selling out Orihime ate her inside every day. Each night, she was tormented with nightmares of Orihime visiting her and blaming her for all the things she had done. "I don't think she'll even want to see me."
"You are going to meet her, Arisawa-san. So, go take a shower and wear the clean clothes I have prepared for you. If it becomes too painful, I have a few meds for you." He pointed to the rack next to the bookshelf. "I'll leave the key on my desk. No one will ever know." Ulquiorra placed the keys as he said on his desk and glanced one last time at the female, who was too busy aiding her wounds again. Then he left through the door.
Tatsuki eventually made it to the bathroom and turned on the shower. A wave of warm water gushing over her. It had been ages since she took a good shower. Ever since she had left the huge facility in the Kuchiki kingdom, things had been going downhill. Both Tatsuki and her parents were abandoned in the middle of nowhere, and they did not receive the medical help needed. Eventually, they walked randomly into a direction and arrived at a little city called Hueco Mundo. It was a barren city with little food, but they managed to survive. Mainly because of one thing.
The warm stream of water brought back memories to Tatsuki. She started shaking under the shower as tears once again fell. Her two eyes went from the soap bar to her arm, seeing all the scars the needles had left her with. "How will I ever face Orihime? I'm too ashamed. I am a failure as her friend. Will she hate me? A druggie from t-the… streets?" Loud cries erupted from Tatsuki, but those cries never reached the outside, as the stream of water muffled out every sound from the bathroom. Except, there was one person that could hear her cries. Ulquiorra stood before the bathroom door, eyes closed and hands clenched.
Ever since he found the strong Arisawa Tatsuki confused and high on drugs, something in him stirred. The little tomboy that he met while saving Orihime in the valley was now a broken, addicted woman. The feelings emerging within were foreign, new, and made him feel unpredictable. Ulquiorra did everything to conceal these feelings, but hearing Tatsuki weep for her friend made him realize that he no longer could hide what was inside of him. He needed to explore these feelings to know where it came from.
Orihime and Momo were on their way to free state, which took around 7 hours to reach. The entire trip, Orihime felt nervous and if it wasn't for the book she got from Byakuya, she would've gone crazy. Momo tried to distract Orihime by singing songs, telling her silly stories, but nothing could keep Orihime's mind off that little orange haired boy.
"Oh, Momo, I'm so curious what he looks like! What if he can't remember me? I'm sure he doesn't… he was so little when they took him. Whoever is responsible will lose their head! But… isn't that too cruel? Oh, maybe they didn't mean to take him? Wait, am I defending a criminal?" Momo deadpanned and sighed. "Kurosaki Inoue-san, this is already the twenty-seventh time you have been over this. I'm sure Kamari-kun will recognize you and will be very happy his momma came to save him."
The princess beside her nodded and sighed. "I'm just worried, as a mother, you know." Momo's eyes softened. "I understand madam."
"Since I can't talk about Kamari…" Orihime pouted. "Can you perhaps tell me more about the free state, Momo-chan?" she turned to the female sitting beside her. "I've been meaning to ask you this for a long time, but how did you come in contact with Aizen-san? He must trust you, since he asked you to accompany me." The maid sighed and rested her arms in her lap, looking at them. It was hard for her to formulate her thoughts. "It's a long story, but…"
"We have time!" Orihime took Momo's hand in her own, Momo meeting her large gray orbs that were showing no ill intent. "I'm really curious, and I promise I'll let nothing bad happen to you." Momo knew that Orihime was a friendly master, heck, she was the friendliest and most selfless person she had ever met. People said that Masaki and Yuzu were the most selfless, but Orihime was on a whole different level.
"It's just like Aizen-sama said." Momo whispered, receiving a blank stare from Orihime. "I'm sorry, is there something on my face?" The maid laughed and shook her head. "No ma'am. It's just that you are too kind to me. I don't deserve it."
"I don't agree." Orihime replied. "Everyone deserves kindness. Those who can't give it must crave for some kindness too, don't you think? So now, will you tell me about you?" Indeed, this woman was amazing. Momo never saw it before, but Aizen was right. After all the things she had been through, Orihime was shining brighter than ever.
"Okay… if you insist." Momo took a deep breath before speaking. "I come from the free state. It is where I was born. Aizen-sama took me in when I was just a little girl, wondering on the streets of Hueco mundo. I was almost on my last string, but then he came, my knight in shining armor." Momo's eyes were shining, thinking back of that one day.
"He took me in and cared for me, and then one day he said he found a place for me. I was really sad when he said that. Never did I want to leave his side, but then he said I would be in good hands in the Kurosaki kingdom. He promised that if I would follow his plan, that he would make sure no one can hurt me. And he was right! I met and serve the kindest lady in the entire country, I'm sure of it." Momo's face was radiating, as if she had seen the sun.
Aizen must have a big influence on her… and how did Aizen know that I would end up at the Kurosaki house?
"It's great that someone like Aizen-san took you in, Momo. You are very fortunate to have met such a favorable fate." Momo nodded. "Momo-chan, do you know why Aizen-san wanted to come in contact with me?"
The maid in her black dress suddenly became excited when hearing Orihime's question. "O-Of course! He wants to restore the past and restore the honor of the Aizen and Inoue family. First, I was a bit skeptical. Why would he restore the honor of his father's lover and her family? Sometimes things are so weird, but after hearing Aizen-sama's point of view and meeting you, I totally understand. You two belong on the throne to reign over a country. It will be a country of wealth and you both will make such a lovely family. You and Aizen-sama as a royal couple, feeding…"
Orihime couldn't hear Momo's rambling as she was too occupied with her thoughts. It was as if a cold bucket of water was thrown over her and someone had brought her back to reality. Her own words ringing loud and clear in her ears.
"If you, Aizen Sosuke, can find and bring me my son Kamari, then I will support you fully and trust in you and your plan."
What was Aizen, his plan? He said he would support her and restore the Inoue kingdom, but what is in it for him? How could she make such a foolish proclamation towards a man she had barely met? Something deep inside had already warned her for this man, but she needed to see with her own eyes what he was capable of. Ichigo couldn't give her Kamari, but this man could. Orihime tried to calm herself down and not being carried away by Momo's words. She was still married, which meant that she couldn't just marry someone else. She was already married, for crying out loud! Maybe Momo was wrong and Aizen doesn't want to become king. Or at least, my king.
The car came to a full stop and Orihime was pulled out of her thoughts, looking at Momo, who had a bright smile on her face. "Finally, las Noches. We're home." Orihime gulped as she looked at the estate. It was very white and cold on the outside, surrounded by mountains of gray sand. It brought shivers to her body. Home… it sure doesn't look very 'homey.'
It took forever for the two girls to reach the huge hall where Aizen awaited them. The castle of las Noches had eight towers and was very spacious. There were at least six long hallways, Orihime and Momo had to pass. With each step, Orihime's nervousness was building up, while Momo seemed happier than ever.
Before the two could enter the castle, they went through a thorough security inspection. Momo reassured Orihime and told her that it was part of local protocol. The free state was a dangerous place, and often times barbarians would try to force their way into the palace. It didn't give Orihime any peace of mind, but she could understand where it came from.
Meanwhile, Aizen was sitting in a large chair in a huge ballroom. The black tiles on the floor reflecting his face, which carried a smirk. Finally, the day had come that his perfect flower would come home. It didn't take him long to find Kurosaki Kamari, but it would seem too suspicious if he immediately took the child after his meeting with Orihime. After all, he needed her to trust him and this was the perfect way.
"Aizen-sama, they have arrived." A panting Starrk entered the room, followed by an eating Lilynette who was gulping down a huge chocolate muffin. "Starrk, you should really take a bite of this muffin. It's sooooo good." The tall well build brunette turned to the girl behind him and gave her an uneasy look, whispering; "now it not the time Lily, don't you see Aizen-sama sitting there?" Their leader, however, was in a good mood and decided to smile friendly at the pair. "I'm glad the muffin is to your liking. I'm sure Orihime and Momo will be thankful that someone pre-tasted the sweets."
"This child…. Aizen-sama I apologize." Starrk said, pushing Lilynette's head down, so she would make a bow in front of the male. "It's okay Starrk-san. Today we have good company, so I'm just as happy as Lilynette-chan." Aizen said, his head still resting on the palm of his right hand.
"How long until they are here?" Starrk pulled out his watch. "Just a few minutes." Aizen snipped his fingers, Ulquiorra appearing before him. "Make sure our prisoner is ready to be presented and get the kid too." Ulquiorra bowed. "Yes, Aizen-sama" and once again disappeared.
In the hallway, Orihime's gray eyes met two familiar green ones. He was staring at her with his cold eyes, piercing through her, and it brought her back to the first time she had met him. Immediately, Orihime ran towards the male and pulled him into a tight hug. "Ulqui-kun… you're alive!" Her happy banter turned into sobs as she felt relieve come over her. All these years she tried to believe Ulquiorra was okay, just like always.
"Woman, the water of your eyes are staining my uniform. Do you want me to get scolded by Aizen-sama?" Orihime wiped her tears and laughed, hitting him playfully on his chest. "I'll take your side. I won't let Aizen-san do something like that to you. You're my friend after all… who totally abandoned me! Did you even try to find me? And how did you end up here? Did you get hurt?" Ulquiorra was being bombarded with questions from his auburn haired childhood friend.
As usual, he looked calm, but inside he was relieved to see the woman he cherished since childhood safe and sound. She looked good, better than him and Tatsuki. "Woman, stop your questions. You are here to meet Aizen-sama and your son."
"Do you know Kamari?" A delightful expression of happiness on her face. "Where is he? I wanna see him. Oh, no… I'm too nervous." She was biting her nails, looking like a little squirrel. "Woman…" Ulquiorra sighed. Orihime's behavior and personality definitely did not change in the last few years. Something he was grateful for, but would never admit to the woman.
"You first have to meet with Aizen-sama before you get to meet your son. It is customary to bring greetings to the person you are indebted to." Orihime stopped biting her nails and looked up, an awkward smile on her face as she had forgotten something. "Oh yeah, right. I'm just so happy to see you and to meet Kamari. Such pleasant surprises… after all these years."
"I have another present for you, if you behave." The tone of the male sounded like a father. Orihime nodded like a little child. "I'll behave. I promise Ulquiorra-kun. But!" She placed her right hand on her hip and pointed to him with the other. "Don't think you're getting away from me, Ulquiorra! You have some explaining to do!" The male blinked a few times and stared at her blankly.
"Yeah whatever. We're going in. Aizen-sama is ready for you."
The princess of the Inoue kingdom was ushered inside by no one other than her childhood friend Ulquiorra Cifer, who had pinned a golden brooch on her right chest and placed a mantle on her shoulders before entering. The brooch was made of gold and had little diamonds on it. Orihime first did not want to put it on because it looked too expensive, and she truly did not feel worthy to have it.
"Aizen-sama, I present to you Inoue Orihime, our princess." Orihime started blushing as she saw her childhood bowing in front of Aizen and herself. It was awkward and unfamiliar to her. Ulquiorra however didn't have any problem with it and continued his duties as Aizen's servant.
"Welcome Orihime. It's good to see you again after a long while. How was your trip?" Orihime stood in front of Aizen's throne and simply gave him a gracious bow before answering. "I am delighted to see you as well, Aizen-san. Thank you for inviting me… and for rescuing my little angel. My trip has been fine, thank you. I do have a question… to what do I owe this honor of carrying this brooch?"
"Is it to your liking?" Aizen stared at the brooch, a sentimental look in his eyes. "I-I do… but I can't accept this. It's too much…" The female stammered. "It belonged to your mother. Your grandpa made it especially for your mother, since she was the only princess out of the four children." Orihime was at a loss for words, her slender fingers touching the brooch and the diamonds on it.
"My mother… but how?" She looked at Aizen with a puzzled look, still touching the item that was pinned on her chest. "She trusted my father with it. Our parents really loved each other, so it seems. It is too bad that other people kept them apart." Aizen's eyes hardened again, while Orihime's eyes softened. Regardless of the bad memories she had, it did her good to have a keepsake now from her mother. Something that proved that she truly was of royal standing.
"Let's cut the small talk. There is someone special waiting for you. I believe you are here to see him rather than to visit me." Orihime waved her hands in embarrassment. "N-No… that is not true…" Aizen smirked and snapped with his fingers. "I know a lie when I see one."
"Bring him in, Starrk."
The big black doors of the hall were opening. A bright light coming from the other side while the mother in the room could feel her heart beat racing, hands becoming sweaty and toes dancing. Orihime did know how to react when she saw two little legs walking into the room that belonged to her boy, his bright orange hair still the same since the last time she saw him, only it was longer, rougher and becoming more like his father's. His deep dark chocolate orbs were staring into the room, not knowing where to look until he saw his mother. Kamari's eyes started to twinkle as he dashed towards his mother, recognizing her from the pictures his father had shown him many times. Orihime in turn felt her body move forward, legs running towards the little boy. Immediately, when her body felt a little body against her own, the tears started to fall. Happy tears. She couldn't believe the little baby that was taken from her could now walk and make sounds!
"Kamari-kun…" was all she mutter while the boy in her arms looked at her questioningly. He couldn't understand why the woman in the picture was crying, but inside he felt calm, the main reason he didn't fuss in Orihime's arms. Orihime started kissing his forehead, his cheeks and made sure to check his arms and legs for any sign of injury. "Ahhhh Kamari-kun, mommy is so relieved you are okay. I missed you so much." The little boy who simply stared at the woman started giggling when he received the kisses. The only person who would kiss him like that was daddy and maybe Rukia?
"Again!" He screamed, and Orihime happily complied with his demand. Aizen was coolly observing the scene in front of him and loudly cleared his throat, gaining attention from mother and son. "M-My apologies, Aizen-sama. I got a bit carried away." Orihime wiped her tears and held Kamari in her arms.
"Do not apologize. It's always wonderful to see a mother reunite with her child. No play or book can beat a real life display of affection that big." Orihime smiled and bowed. "Thank you Aizen-sama. My heart will forever be grateful for your efforts to reunite Kamari with me, his mother." The male waved his hand and crossed his legs over each other. "It was my honor, Inoue-sama. But aren't you a tad curious about where I found your son?"
Orihime ruffled her little boy and shifted her gaze back to Aizen. At this moment, she was already happy. She was content with the little boy in her hands, but somewhere deep deep in her heart was a little spark of curiosity. But did she really want to know where her little boy had been? What if the truth was unbearable, and she would blame herself for being a failing parent? Aizen could sense the hesitation in her eyes. "I think it's quite important to know who is on your side. Please be assured, the situation does not reflect your responsibilities as a mother, quite the contrary."
The young mother let out a breath she was holding and put down Kamari. "Okay. Please tell me everything."
"As you wish. Bring her in." He commanded. The green-eyed servant came in, behind him could be heard chains clashing against each other. A chained prisoner in black clothing appeared in sight. Raven hair and violet eyes revealed itself, looking around the ballroom.
Orihime could feel all the muscles on her body tighten as she was faced with the female that was mainly the reason for her misery. The auburn haired female started hugging herself, while Rukia was forced to take a seat on the ground.
"I present to you the kidnapper of your lovely child. Kuchiki Rukia." The former heir of the Kuchiki family looked at Orihime, a neutral look in her eyes. Kamari's eyes, however, lit up once again as he pulled his mother's dress, pointing at his caregiver. "R-Rukia-tan! Rukia-taaaan! I wanna go to Rukia-tann!" He looked at his mother with his big eyes, tugging and tugging her dress, but Orihime was like a statue. Various thoughts went through her mind as she remembered the recent pictures Byakuya had presented to her.
In an alternative word, Orihime would run up to Rukia and force answers out of her, maybe slap her even from anger. But in reality, nothing came out. She simply stared at Kamari, who walked towards Rukia. He seemed happy, which meant that she did him no harm.
"Inoue-sama, I am just as shocked as you are. I can't imagine how you must be feeling right now. But I hope you do feel better now that you see this kidnapper all chained up." Orihime flinched at Aizen's voice. She mustered the courage and walked towards Rukia, staring right into her eyes.
Rukia, however, just smiled at Kamari. It was a smile, a warm smile, but it was a smile that Orihime despised and annoyed for some reason. "Ulquiorra-kun, could you take Kamari away for a moment?" Her former guard and childhood friend walked up to Kamari, his eyes showing a slight concern for his friend. Orihime seemed unpredictable at that moment, he disliked it.
"Of course. Kurosaki Inoue-sama, Aizen-sama, I'll take Kamari-san to the garden." Kamari, who didn't want to go with the guard, started to fuss. Orihime was just about to crouch down as Rukia's voice could be heard through the room. "Don't be afraid, Kamari-chan. I'll be fine. Have fun with, mister." Her words seem to calm down the boy, and he immediately obeyed the woman who spoke with authority.
Aizen who had witnessed the interaction was mentally smirking, no, he was even laughing. He knew that this would add fuel to the fire that was already igniting in Orihime's heart, which could work to his advantage if he played his cards right.
"Such a fearless woman we have here." Aizen joined Orihime and stood beside her, his hand resting on her shoulder as a form of support. His big warm hand indeed bringing comfort to Orihime who seemed to be grateful for this, as she looked back at his arm. "You know, if I were Kamari's parent, I would've already cut off your tongue and each of your fingers. Just to make you realize who is the real parent. You're lucky you're at the mercy of Miss Inoue, or should I say Ku-ro-saki?" His dark brown eyes met Rukia, which instantly made her weak. The gaze he held sucked the life out of her and brought immense fear to her, but she kept herself upright. Hearing him emphasize the Kurosaki name made her clench her teeth.
"I-Isn't she j-just one of your m-minions? Following you b-blindly w-without a mind of her own? So p-pathetic." Rukia had trouble speaking, but being the stubborn woman she is, did not want to give in to Aizen and his power game. "J-Just being h-here makes h-her g-guilty f-for trea-treason. D-Don't think y-you're better." The petite woman managed to say.
Orihime, who now was simply a bystander, watched Rukia change in front of the man, but she disliked what she saw. She was grateful that Aizen was supporting her, but she didn't want to seem weak, especially not to this woman whom she believed had a complicated relationship with her and her family. She walked to a now collapsing Rukia and crouched down, her hand reaching out to her face and placed the palm of her head on her forehead, turning worried to Aizen.
"Aizen-sama, she's burning up." Her big gray doe eyes filled with worry as she was masking the anger she held in her heart. Rukia managed to push Orihime's hand away, which made Orihime lose her balance and fell backwards on her bum. "I-I d-don't need help from an m-minion." She gritted, hating the look in Orihime's eyes. How dare a low life like her have pity for her. Couldn't Ichigo see that the woman he married was pure evil? She even conspired with Aizen, the devil that was banned from the Kuchiki kingdom.
The young female started at the prisoner and let out a sigh, rubbing her back. "Ouch, that hurt. It's not really nice to push someone away when they're trying to help." Aizen was watching the scene play out with curiosity on his face. Orihime kept surprising him with her candid responses. "Rukia-san, I still remember the last time we met at the facility. Do you? Back then, our roles were quite reversed, wasn't it? I was a prisoner, pregnant of a child who was placed inside me against my will. You were one of my aggressors. But when I met you, I found it hard to believe you were part of such an evil plan. The entire meeting, you wore such a sad smile on your face. I still remember as if it happened yesterday."
"Now, we are almost three years further and… and…" Orihime stopped in her tracks, feeling herself choke up from tears. "you still carry that sadness in your heart. I can feel that when you were carried in here. Even from your interaction with Kamari, I feel this heavy feeling on my chest, pressing me down. I can feel that you care a lot for Kamari, but when you look at him, you are sad. Sad that he can't be yours, ever. I can feel your immense hate for me, but most of all…" Orihime now looked at Rukia with teary eyes, and she looked drop death gorgeous. Even the guards in the room took in her beauty as she was crying, not for herself but for the prisoner who had done her wrong. "Your love for my husband, Kurosaki Ichigo."
When Orihime had spoken these words, Rukia felt herself becoming angry. She wanted to scream, fight and give Orihime a beating of her own. Why was this woman telling her how she felt? Who was she to take Ichigo's name in her mouth with such familiarity? Rukia rather received Aizen's treatment than to be pitied by a woman who had gained it all by just carrying a child, the child that was supposed to be hers from the start.
"I am mad… I truly am. But why can't I help but to cry when I see the sadness etched in your heart? Why do I feel annoyed when you smile with such a sad heart? Why do I feel grateful when Kamari seems to warm up to you? Is it because he is unhurt? Rukia-sama, I just have one question for you." The strong woman wiped her tears and managed to get off the ground, her gaze never leaving Rukia's form. "Please tell me why? Why did you take him from me?"
Her voice sounded small, fragile, weak and filled with compassion, but it enraged the prisoner, who was now staring at Orihime with hatred all over her face. Rukia collected herself and then changed her expression into a smile. "Why. don't. you. ask. your. dear. husband." She said slowly, making in her way a statement to the woman. "He can tell you all about my reasons. The reason why I do what I do and the vow we made to each other. Don't kid yourself, peasant. Not because you birthed his child means that he loves you." Rukia knew Ichigo's heart, but that didn't mean that Orihime knew what was inside his heart. This foul move was Rukia's way to make Orihime's heart waver. "Not because you sleep together means you know him."
Orihime bit her lip and nodded. "You are correct. The closest people to us sometimes hold the biggest secrets. I'm no different, I will admit that. Being from royal heritage sometimes brings big secrets that we can't just share with anyone. You surely must know what I mean." The woman turned around and took off her cloak. On Orihime's dress was the golden emblem, showing the sign of the house of Inoue, Rukia's eyes widening from shock as it was an emblem she had only seen in the history books she was required to read before being appointed as heir. 'No way…'
"Guards, take her away and make sure she receives a good meal. I'm afraid I can't face Kuchiki-sama while knowing his sister is being mistreated." Rukia was blown away by sudden confidence, Orihime exteriorized and mumbled "N-Nii-sama." Starrk was already pulling up Rukia by her arm. "Come on, you heard our princess. It's time to go back." He dragged her with him while she kept on watching the princess, whose back was now turned to her.
The big door closed, and an immediate applause came from Aizen. He was amused, but most of all proud of the display of power Orihime showed towards her first enemy. "Orihime, you truly amazed me." To her surprise, she was pulled into a strong hug. Aizen rested his head on hers and inhaled her sweet scent. He closed his eyes for a moment to take at the moment. His flower was in his arms. "You know what you promised me, right?" The tone in his voice was lightly threatening, but made enough of an impact to send cold shivers down Orihime's spine.
It had been around one and a half day since Orihime left and Ichigo was walking in the woods, on his way to the small house his friends lived with his son. More than ever was he determined to bring up the issue about Orihime meeting Kamari. It was now or never, or he would simply kidnap his own son back to the house he belonged.
To his surprise, he found the house empty and dark. Hmm, did Renji take Rukia and Kamari for a walk? He ran to the house and immediately entered the house, finding it in a desolate state, as it was obvious that a struggle took place in the house. He went out to see if he could find any trace of them, but just when Ichigo wanted to run back inside he met an angry Renji who was just as confused and in panic as him and just returned from a late afternoon hunt.
"Renji, what happened? Where are Kamari and Rukia?" The red head that was still examining the room and screamed back at Ichigo: "HOW SHOULD I KNOW?! ICHIGO, THEY TOOK HER!" Renji was now turning the entire house upside down, looking for a trace of the kidnapper. Instead of helping, Ichigo could feel his throat close up as he could hear screams and a crying Orihime in the background.
"Ichigo, they took him! My baby!"
The orange top stared to stumble as the room started spinning. His breath accelerating as memories and reality seemed to intertwine itself. Renji heard a body fall on the ground, and he immediately ran over, seeing his friend in a state that was unfamiliar to him. The orange top was shivering, and his head was shaking. "Oi Ichigo, oi oi oi!" It took a slap in the face from Renji to return to his old self, calming down as he saw a worried Renji on top of him. "Ichigo! What the heck?! You never lose your cool, man." Ichigo groaned and pushed Renji off him, trying to regulate his breathing. "I-I… I…" He couldn't talk, instead he felt tears flow from his tears. Normally, Renji would make an offensive remark, but instead sympathy was written all over his face.
Quickly, Ichigo wiped the tears away and dusted himself off, embarrassed by his own behavior. He chuckled and picked himself up from the ground. Coincidentally, his eyes fell on a little note that was on the rug near the door. "Oi Renji, I see something here." Renji grasped it from the rug and started cursing.
'A little boy was taken back to his home. A home he truly belonged to. But oops, we also took in the wicked witch of the west that happened to be with him. Want them back? Why don't you come to the free state? Las Noches is where are your nightmares come true! I dare you to come and get back your treasure. What is your treasure? We'll soon find out! Because you treasure is where your heart is. But hurry… because tik tok…'
"What the heck?! The free state? Who is that bastard who took them all the way there? The free state? Come on! We need to hurry, Ichigo, you know how dangerous the free state is." Ichigo nodded. He was still weak from what happened and followed his friend out, praying in his mind that both his friend and son were safe.
It was about an 8-hour trip from the little house in the woods to Las Noches, but traveling in full speed, it took about 6.5 hours for the guys to made their way to the free state. The most dangerous place in the entire country. Deep at night, the guys kept on travelling and only stopped for a short while to catch their breath.
The entire evening, Renji was thinking back at the event that happened at the house. It was for the first time he saw his friend showing signs that something was not okay. "Yo Ichigo, just a couple more hours and we're there. I'm sure we'll find them in one piece."
"I know, Renji… I am just worried about our opponent. If it were Byakuya, it would be a whole different story." His red haired companion nodded. There was an awkward silence between them until Renji once again broke it with his remark. "You know you need to talk about what happened back at the house. We can't just act like nothing happened."
Ichigo tensed up, his head hanging while looking down at his lap. "I really hoped you wouldn't bring that up." He answered in a more silent tone than his tone he used with Renji. "Sorry, Ichigo, but you know me better than that. I can't afford to have you slip out during combat. So, care to tell me about what happened?"
The male found it hard to find the right words, but decided to give it a try. "You know how Orihime and I have our ups and down, right? Well, ever since I started to approach her again, I keep getting these nightmares. Nightmares where she is crying and screaming to me about Kamari. I feel like my guilt is finally catching up to me." He smiled bitterly.
"Is it the first time this happened?" Ichigo nodded. "This occurrence never took place before, it used to be only nightmares, but I think the panic of not knowing where Kamari has driven me off the edge."
"I know you're a prince and all, but did you even process all what happened all these past years?" Ichigo sighed and shook his head in defeat. "How could I? I had a depressed woman by my side and a family that I couldn't turn my back on. A kingdom that is counting on a future king. How could I?" Ichigo's eyes were filled with tears, a lump forming in his throat. "I couldn't share my pain with Orihime. Her own pain was already too much to bear, how could she carry mine?"
"Maybe that's wrong between you two. You carry everything by yourself. Ichigo, you need to share this with her. You know that?" Renji confronted his friend. Of course, Renji felt bad for Ichigo, but if there was one thing he hated about Ichigo, it was the fact that he feels that he needs to do everything alone. Ever since they were kids, he wanted to protect Renji and Rukia by himself. Rather than doing good, it pushed the two males apart.
"But first I need to find Kamari. I can't come home without my son. I owe that to Orihime. I can't ever face her without knowing that my son is safe." Ichigo said, the sadness still noticeable in his voice.
"I know. That's why we are making this journey. To find him."
The night continued and at sunrise they finally had reached the free state and eventually made it to las Noches. Behind Aizen, his castle was an open field where small flowers would bloom. It was the only soil in the country that was healthy. The rest of the country was filled with parts of desert and dried land. Ichigo was on his horse as he saw a pair of two orange heads sitting in the grass, enjoying the early morning breeze.
"Do you want to make a flower crown with me, Kamari-chan?" Orihime's voice danced through the wind as she followed her son, who was now running through the field of flowers. Orihime eventually picked up her son and started dancing with him in her arms, humming the song Ichigo had heard every morning when she was pregnant and after the first night of their love making. It was the song she would hum when she was truly in a good mood.
Was he dreaming? Ichigo froze on the spot.
"Orihime?"
Woooooooo! So much happened! Orihime meeting her little angel. I'm truly happy for her. But Rukia totally ruined it. I feel so bad for writing her in this story like a horrible woman. Actually, I really like Rukia. She's sooooo cool. Small secret... I started writing another fanfic where Rukia is actually a good friend to Orihime. Will it ever see the light of day? Who knows because I first have to finish this story, hahaha! (Talking about commitment.) - What did you guys think of Ichigo's part in this episode? Did you guys notice that I'm trying to make him into less of a jerk? It's a IchiHime story after all, so he really needs a recovery arc. :D
Anyways. I'm always happy to hear from you all and read your reviews and feedback! I appreciate all the reviews I am receiving and it also helps me to implement some of the feedback in future chapters. So please, show some love 3. Until the next chapter!
