Chapter 3

At the Beavers Dam

Taking longer than I originally thought we finally made it to Beaver's dam. It was a little hill of sticks sitting in the middle of a frozen pond. Another beaver came out of the dam looking around. "Beaver is that you? If I find that you have been with Badger this entire time I..." she complained then stopped when she saw us. "Those aren't badgers. Oh my I never thought I would live to see this day," she gushed looking at us each in turn. "If only you'd have given me a ten minute warning," she hit her husband.

"I would have given you an entire week if it would've helped," he chuckled and she ushered us inside.

"Let's get you inside and warmed up and some civilized conversation." She reminded me of my mum as she fussed over our coming. Going inside we went straight to business about helping Mr. Tumnus.

As Peter spoke to the beavers about saving Mr. Tumnus I noticed Edmund kept looking at the door. Deciding to keep my eye on him as the night wore on. Beaver started talking about Aslan.

"Who's Aslan?" Edmund asked. Beaver spat in his cup and started chuckling.

"Who's Aslan? Who's Aslan? You cheeky little blighter you," then Mrs. Beaver hit her husband causing him to look at our confused faces. "You really don't know do you?"

"We haven't actually been here long" Peter explained the obvious.

"Well Aslan is the real king of Narnia. The head honcho. It has been for told that when Adam's flesh and Adam's bone sits at Cair Paravel in throne, the evil time will be over and done,"

"You know that really doesn't rhyme." Susan blurted.

"That's not really the point." Beaver sounded exasperated.

"It has long been foretold that two sons of Adam and two daughters of Eve will defeat the White Witch and restore peace to Narnia." Mrs. Beaver explained further.

"And you think we're the ones? I think you have the wrong people," Peter said.

"Besides it called for four people. With me it makes five." I interjected not fully understanding. "What reasons do I have for being here?"

"You dear have a special reason for being here. Even if you don't know it yet." Mrs. Beaver said. Hearing shifting behind me I noticed Edmund sneaking out of the dam while the others were still speaking. Quickly and quietly I followed him.

"Edmund what do you think you're doing?" Shouting at him once I was out of the dam. Turning around he sneered at me.

"Leave me alone!" He shouted turning back and started up the hill towards the mountain. Racing after him grabbing his arm pulling him back.

"If you're going to that place between the mountains don't. There's something wrong about that place and you shouldn't go there." Trying to keep him from leaving his family.

"You're not my mum. I can go anywhere I want. Now shove off!" Pushing me away I slipped, losing my balance falling backwards hitting my head blacking out.

Coming too I was in Peter's arms as he was calling my name."Bri are you alright?" Helping me up feeling unsteady on my feet he helped me to Mrs. Beaver.

"Where's Edmund?" Susan asked. Pointing up the hill they took off in the same direction as Edmund had gone. Mrs. Beaver helped me back inside. Handing me something warm to drink I took it gratefully.

Fifteen minutes later everyone came running back. "Hurry mama they're after us!" Beaver yelled. Mrs. Beaver and Susan started packing food.

"What are you doing?" Peter asked.

"You'll be thanking me later. Beaver gets cranky when he's hungry." She explained.

"I'm cranky now!" He shouted going over to a secret door.

Following Beaver down a tunnel that he and his friend Badger dug. Mrs. Beaver got after him for something I didn't hear since my heart was pounding in my ears. Following Beaver in the lead I was behind Peter and in front of Susan and Lucy was behind us Lucy fall causing us to stop. Wolf howls echo through the tunnels towards us.

"They're in the tunnel." Lucy whispered hurrying toward the exit. Pushing Lucy out first following after her then helped Susan out and Peter. Lucy stumbled over something as Peter and Beaver rolled a barrel to block the exit. Looking around noticing stone statues of animals. This can't be good.

Beaver went up to a Badger statue looking sad. "He was my best mate." Placing a paw on the cold stone of his friend.

"I'm sorry dear." Mrs. Beaver placed her paw on her husband's shoulder.

"What happened to them?" Lucy asked taking mine and Peter's hands.

"This is what becomes of those who go against the White Witch," a voice said behind us. Peter pushed me behind him as I pulled Lucy close to me.

"You take one more step, traitor, and I'll chew you to splinters!" Beaver warned trying to get to the fox but Mrs. Beaver held him back.

"Relax. I'm one of the good guys." The fox chuckled as he came nearer.

"Yeah? Well you look an awful like one of the bad guys!"

"An unfortunate family resemblance," he sighed. "But we can argue breeding later. Right now we've got to move."

A howl came from the hole. Making us look back at the hole where the barrel was blocking the exit. We needed to think of something and fast.

"What do you have in mind?" Peter pressed. The fox looked up at the trees getting the idea. Rushing over to the trees helping Lucy first then the beavers. I was the last one in the tree. As Fox brushed away our foot prints leading up to our hiding spot the wolves broke through the barrel surrounding him.

"Evening gents, lost something have we?" he asked watching the wolves circle him.

"Don't patronize me," barked the general of the pack Maugrim I think it was. "I know where you alliance lies. We are looking for humans."

"Humans here in Narnia?" fox acted surprised. Just then another wolf lunged at him grabbing Fox in its teeth. I felt my stomach tie in knots wanting to help him but stayed were I was.

"Which way did they go?" he threatened. "Your life is your reward which isn't worth much." He chuckled making my blood boil. Fox looked up at us my breath caught in my throat. He was going to rat us out.

"North. They went north." Dropping his head acting like he was defeated.

"Smell them out," Maugrim demanded. The wolf threw Fox like he was nothing more than a rag doll. Jumping down rushing to him kneeling down into the snow.

"Are you alright?" I asked touching his head giving him some attention.

"I wish I could say their bark is worse than their bite." He tried to joke but let out a whimper of pain. As Mrs. Beaver tended to his wounds. "Ow!"

"Will you stay still?" Mrs. Beaver complained. "You're worse than Beaver on bath day!"

"Worst day of the year!" Beaver joked.

"Thank you for your kindness." Fox stood up. "But that is all the healing I have time for."

"You're leaving already?" Lucy asked.

"It has been an honor my Queen, but I must go. Aslan himself has asked me to gather more troops," he sounded hopeful and full of pride

"You've seen Aslan?" Beaver asked in awe.

"What's he like?" Mrs. Beaver questioned.

"Like everything we have ever hoped for." Fox answered. "You will be glad to have him fight by your side in your battle against the Witch."

"But we're not planning on fighting any Witch!" Susan clarified.

"But surely, King Peter, the prophecy!" Fox looked to the eldest Pevensie.

"We can't go to war without ya!" Beaver added.

"We just want our brother back." Peter claimed.

"Really what about Mr. Tumnus, Badger? Others she has in slaved or even killed. We have to help them," Feeling my temper raise at the mere mention of the witch.

"My lady, I thank you. But I must be going now be careful on your way." Fox bowed then disappeared into the woods.

Deciding that it was too late to travel any more we stayed there for the night. Needing to cool off and be alone I sat away from everyone just looking into the dark just thinking about why I was here. How could I help? Someone sat next to me holding out a piece of bread with some jam on it. Looking over seeing Peter.

"Thought you might be hungry." Taking the bread from him giving him a small smile.

"Thanks." Eating in silence wondering what he was thinking. When I finished turning to face him. "Peter we saw a majority of Narnia so far. What do you think when you look at it?"

"A land covered in snow." He looked out at the darkness. Then looked back at me.

"Wouldn't you like to see this place full of life instead of death?" He just looked at me. "Peter we can't leave this place until we help them."

"Bri we aren't hero's we are just kids. I am just trying to get my family back safely then go home. I don't know about you," Taking my hands in his. Pulling them out standing up staring at him fuming that he won't help.

"You can do whatever you want but I am helping these people be free of that Witch." Leaving him sitting there as I went back to the others. There was an ache in my heart that I didn't understand why it was there. Ignoring it laying down close to the fire to keep warm until sleep came.
