Chapter 4

Journey across the Ice

Dreams turned into nightmares as I watched everyone die in front of me. Just standing in a middle of a field looking over the bodies of my friends the Beavers, Fox, Susan, Lucy even Edmund all slain in a battle. Standing in front of me was Peter who was badly wounded looking at me with death in his eyes. "Why did this happen?" He asked me. Trying to get to him when an arrow pierced his skin. Dropping down to my knees taking him in my arms as he died. Screaming in anger and pain when something hit me and everything went dark.

Bolting up into some ones arms as they tried to calm me down. Looking around trying to remember where I was. Then remembering that I was in Narnia with the Pevensies trying to make our way to see Aslan. Finally calming down the arms around me relaxed enough that I pulled back looking up to see that it was Peter. He was alive and well no wounds on his person anywhere.

"Are you alright?" He asked worried. Nodding he let me go as the day began with a pale shade of pink of the sunrise.

"Just a bad dream." We stood up going over to the others to wake them up for some breakfast.

Once breakfast was consumed we packed up following the Beavers as they took point in our new journey. Lucy bounded over to me making me smile but I couldn't shake that awful dream and made a silent promise that I will do whatever necessary to keep my new found friends safe and alive.

"Come on we have to cross the river," Beaver instructed as stopped on a cliff looking out at the snow covered land. "Like what you see?"

"Yes I do. It's beautiful," I said smiling.

"It's so big," Lucy said.

"It's the world dear did you expect it to be small?" Mrs. Beaver asked.

"Smaller." Susan glared at Peter. Rolling my eyes at how negative she could be when something like this exists. Now I really wanted to see what this place looks like with all the seasons not just winter.

Heading down to the river we started our long trek across it. Staying near the Beavers as they led the journey looking back every few minutes at Peter and Lucy. Trying to shake the dream from my mind repeating that it was just a dream and nothing more.

Not paying attention when I tripped over a piece of ice. Falling face first into the snow as pain radiated from my ankle. Everyone came over to me as I groaned in pain. "Are you alright?" Lucy asked. They helped me to sit up instead of being face first in the snow.

"No I hurt me ankle." Groaning in a lot of pain. Peter knelt down looking at my ankle.

"Can I see if it's not broken?" He asked nodding as he touched it making me hiss in pain.

"Peter you're not a doctor. How can you tell if it's broken or not?" Susan said earning a glare from me. She stepped back and just shut up.

Peter started to take my shoe off and felt my ankle. Letting out another cry of pain as he looked up at me. "I don't think it's broken but it looks like a bad sprain. Can you walk?" I nodded as he helped me up.

Going much slower now with a limp and in so much pain but I didn't want to burden anyone. I refused to lean on Peter and cause problems. "Come on humans. We don't have all day!" Beaver yelled as Peter bent down to pick up Lucy.

"If he tells us to hurry one more time. I will make him into a big fluffy hat," he growled making me laugh.

"He is getting bossy," Lucy said getting on Peter's back.

"Come on!" Beaver shouted again. Shaking my head then saw Mrs. Beaver pointing. I turned around and saw something coming straight for us.

"It's her!" she shouted as we started running. Ignoring my ankle running as fast as I could.

Making it to the forest following Beaver down to a hollowed space. Feeling tears flow down my face with fear and pain flowing through me. Peter took my hand squeezing it as a figure loomed over the hollow casting its shadow in front of us. Then whoever it was left and Beaver started to sniff the air.

"I'm going to take a look to see if it's clear." Peter stood up to leave but I wouldn't let go of his hand.

"No I will go and look. You're no good to Narnia dead." Beaver stopped him.

"Neither are you Beaver." Mrs. Beaver took his paw.

"Thanks sweetheart." Patting her paw then went out to see if the witch had left. He was gone longer than I would have like. Hearing crunching above us he popped his head down scaring us. "I hope you all have been good 'cause there's someone here to see ya."

Leaving the safety of the hollow everyone in front of me. Standing up only to fall when taking a step letting out a cry. Looking down seeing my ankle was the size of an orange. Peter turned seeing me on the ground. "Are you alright?" he asked.

"My ankle is really swollen. I don't think I can walk on it." He helped me hobble over to where the others were staring at someone. I couldn't believe my eyes for standing in front of us was Father Christmas himself smiling.

"Merry Christmas sir." Lucy exclaimed as he laughed.

"It most certainly is Lucy." he said.

"We thought you were the witch." Peter explained why we ran from him.

"In my defense I have been driving one of these longer than the witch."

"But I thought there was no Christmas in Narnia?" Susan asked making me shake my head.

"There hasn't been in a long time. Her powers have been weakening thanks to you. But I do say that you could use these." He laughed picking up his bag.

"Presents!" Lucy cheered. He got a pouch and handed it to her.

"This is the juice of the fireflower, one drop and it can cure any injury. And I hope you never have to use this," he handed her a dagger. "Battles are ugly affairs."

Then he gave Susan a bow and a quiver of arrows and a horn. Peter was handed a sword and shield. Then it was my turn, pulling out a sword and a bracelet. "This bracelet lets anyone know that you are a Guardian of Narnia." he said making me nod. I put it on and fingered the beautiful gold and silver leaves entwining together like vines.

"Thank you so much sir." Smiling as I hooked the sword around my hip.

"Well must be off. Things do tend to pile up after being gone for 100 years. Long live Aslan and Merry Christmas!" he shouted and he rode off.

"Bri how is your ankle?" Lucy asked coming over.

"It really hurts." Looking down at my ankle as it throbbed.

"Here try it." She handed me the vile of the fireflower juice. Taking one drop feeling a warm tingling sensation flow through my body. Down to my ankle which seemed to burn for a second then a cooling sensation took its place then fading away. Taking a testing step Peter held onto my arm to catch me if I fell. It didn't hurt and the swelling was gone it works it really works.

Continuing our way towards Aslan when we came to a half frozen river. A long wolf howl echoed through the air sounding not so far off in the distance. "We have to hurry." Peter started down towards the frozen part of the river. Peter took the lead as he started to step on the ice, cracking sounds caused him to step off the ice.

"You better let me go," Beaver said.

"Good Idea," Peter replied. Beaver climbed down to the ice testing places as we followed carefully behind him. Turning around he used his tail to find places that were still thick and sturdy enough to walk on sometimes sounds of cracking could be heard when he stepped on thinner places.

"You've been sneaking second helpings haven't you?" Mrs. Beaver said.

"Well you never know what meal will be your last. Especially with your cooking." Beaver joked trying to make light of the matter at hand. Sounds could be heard above us as the wolves ran over the frozen waterfall to the other side.

"Oh no!" I shouted as the wolves cornered us. Stopping Peter and I drew our swords for protection. Beaver tried to fight against them when another wolf grabbed him in his teeth. Peter faced the wolf who seemed to be their leader named Maugrim. I faced the way we came from making sure that we weren't ambushed from behind.

"Put those away and your brother goes with you." Maugrim growled. Peter and I wouldn't withdraw our swords and Susan grew angry.

"Do as he says. You aren't a hero!" She yelled to her brother.

"Smart girl." Maugrim chuckled baring his teeth.

"No run him through!" Beaver shouted. I turned to see what was unfolding behind me as well as keeping attention to the wolves in front of me.

"Peter what promises does a wolf actually keep?!" I yelled. Lucy looked up and yelling as giant pieces of ice broke off from the waterfall causing it to fall around us.

"Hold on to me!" Peter thrusted his sword into the ice. Going to grab him only to lose my balance falling into the chilly water. The force of the currant drew me further down the river towards some large roots pulling myself out of the water and on to the bank coughing up water.

Looking around I must have been a little further down from where the others were. Sitting calming my nerves hearing Susan yell "Where's Lucy?"

"Has anyone seen my coat?" she asked.

"Don't worry your brother has you well looked after." Beaver mentioned.

"Where's Bri?" I heard Lucy ask. "Bri!"

"I'm alright." Coming over to them, Lucy was the first to hug me then Susan and finally Peter.

"I don't think you're gonna need those coats anymore," Mrs. Beaver announced. She was right the trees started sprouting blossoms and the snow was melting and the grass became visible.
