To save a pig tailed idiot final chapter
The slow and steady intake and release of oxygen was accompanied by rhythmic beeping. Like a heart rate monitor was near her. Maka felt stiff, sore and in pain. Like her arms had been stabbed with needles a bunch of time by incompetent nurses.
It sounded like she was in a hospital
It felt like she was in a hospital
It even smelled like she was in a hospital.
She wanted to sleep. Was that what she had been doing before? Hadn't she been on a date with a newly revived Soul? Back from the dead by Lord Death! Then he started saying strange things to her, like it was the other way around. Like she had been dead! But that couldn't be true! She had all of the notes from Steins lectures and remembered each word as per usual.
A dead person can't take notes!
It's illegal...
But none of her pondering was getting her any questions. Only raising more questions in her head. Because, none of this made any sense! She couldn't be in a hospital bed. Healthy people are rarely in hospital beds or hospitals for that fact. So by this logic, she wasn't in a hospital bed. If her theory was correct, then she should open her eyes.
Maka tried, she honestly tried to open her eyes. But that task was as impossible as Kid deciding symmetry wasn't important at all or her father deciding he was gay. The only thing she could do was breathe, even then she felt assisted by something. Possible the machine sound that resembled a dragon snoring. Or possible a large guard dog. No, it still sounded like a dragon more than a guard dog. The machine wasn't whining or sighing in its sleep. So dragon fit much better.
The evidence was piling up that she was in hospital. But that couldn't be right. She had been on a date with Soul, he bought her expensive things, took her a night on the town and even took her to a bookstore. That all happened right?
"Are you sure it did?" A chuckling voice echoed through her thoughts. It took Maka a moment to place as Soul's little demon. Which concerned her because he wasn't supposed to be able to hear him.
Maka felt the pull of her soul, calling her consciousness to appear. Maka had never been inside her own soul before, giving into temptation she let the pull take her.
Unlike her weapons soul, a black and red that went on forever curling with madness. Her own soul was very different. For one she could see walls in the distance. But they were very far off that it seemed to take a days run to reach them.
Life was in her soul. Not to say her partners was dead. But he didn't have large green pine trees everywhere along with grass and flowers under her bare feet. Maka also noticed that. She seemed to be wearing her normal clothes minus her boots, jacket and yellow oxford. The grass felt slick under her feet and cold. Bookshelves with rolling ladders lines up everywhere. She supposed it was symbolic. Her soul was at least. Her grigori soul that breathed life into things. The walls she used to keep herself guarded and kept out any unwanted visitors. The books for her love for her love of knowledge. Maka wondered what the electric blue night sky muddled with dark clouds was. She could see the twinkle of the stars clearly but it intrigued her. She wanted a closer look at them.
On cue a ladder rolled to her with great speed and smacked into the side of the nearest bookshelf. It was as tall as a building. The bookshelf not the ladder. Well the ladder too since it went to the top.
Bracing herself for a long climb ahead, Maka firmly gasped the latter and hoisted herself up. She was surprised when it started ascending on its own. With as much speed as it rolled to her it took her up. Her pigtails whipped around and her knuckles went white from clutching the latter so hard.
It sped up when nearing the top then violently thrashed downwards. Causing her to let go and fly onto the surface of the bookshelf. Landing with a painful thud Maka groaned and slowly sat up. Dizzy from the very rude latter that shot her up here. Her vision took a minute to focus and clear the doubles away.
They sky was as beautiful as it was from the ground. She still couldn't figure out what it symbolized.
'But maybe it's not for you'
The voice made her snap her head around. The demonic chuckling echoed but nothing changed. Nothing...except that her old stuffed rabbit was in front of her.
"Flopsy?" Maka gasped. The well loved toy was standing in front of her. Its pink plush looked old and made the clear blue ribbon around its neck look brand new. The long eared rabbit waved an arm at her. Motion her to follow it somewhere. Somewhere that she had to be right now. It was impatient as Maka slowly stood up, her eyes never leaving her beloved childhood toy. It hopped frantically and Maka started moving towards it. Maka followed as it ran along the bookshelf top. It occasionally looked back at her to see if she was still following. The plush rabbit jumped to the next bookshelf. Over a long distance with a high arc. Maka halted. She already knew that this jump would be impossible for her. Flopsy waved at her frantically, trying to tell her it'd be okay.
"This is for all the years I drooled on you as a kid isn't it?" Maka muttered while backing up. She sprinted and leaped off the edge. As she already knew. She plummeted downwards towards the pine trees. "I wish the trees could help me" Maka shouted. A last statement before her death she thought. But that wasn't the case when a pine tree rapidly grew and hooked onto the back of her shirt. Leaning over and placing her gently on next shelf. Maka stood awestruck from the behavior. All of the trees grew rapidly, their tips matching height with the shelves and books trailed between them like a thin bridge.
Flopsy waited patiently before tapping her leg. Apparently they were short on time and had to be somewhere. She could imagine her toy with a pocket watch and a hat like from Alice and wonderland. Flopsy began running again and Maka followed. When she grew confidence in herself, she found that she was more graceful with her small quickly paced steps on the bridge of books. Jumping to the edges of shelves while keeping up with flopsy.
Black metal candle stand began to appear along the sides. Lit by blue flames making the strange moon in her world look more mysterious. It didn't have a face and deep yellow hue, constantly in crescent form. This one was white, glowing and didn't have a face. Round like a sphere, like a glowing ball in the sky.
Her bare feet gracefully went across another bridge of books. Before Flopsy stopped. They were at the wall that guarded all of what her soul was. A door with black curtains around it stood on the edge of it. It wasn't welcomed and she already felt hatred of it.
Flopsy climbed up Maka and rested on her shoulder. The sewn on neutral expression seemed to morph into distrust of the door. But the chuckling was louder near it, the chuckling she knew very well.
"It's okay flospy, stay by me" Maka bravely touched the doorknob. It was locked. The door in her own damn soul was freaking locked! Maka fumed inwardly until she spotted carved words in the frame. A frame that was supported by nothing. "Eater...was...here" Maka read aloud. The three words filled her heart with warmth. She then understood where this door would lead to. It wasn't her door.
It was Soul's and she always had a key.
There was a small weight in her hand and Maka held up a blue key and plunged it into the lock. It disappeared then reappeared as a necklace around her neck. Flopsy seemed suspicious of it at first but let it remain. The door opened with a creek.
"Soul stop being dramatic" Maka let out a giggle and stepped through carefully, her hand on the knob behind her. Closing it behind her quietly in case she was interrupting a piano performance.
The notes were demonic and rung through the darkness, guiding her to where she had to be as Flopsy trembled on her shoulder. Soon light found her and Maka peered into the room. No one was at the piano but the keys were being played. The red demon sat on his chair listening quietly, swinging his finger to the tune, chuckling occasionally.
Soul was lying on a couch, sleeping and unmoving. Maka's first instinct was to check if he was alright.
"He's fine, just being childish and having a meltdown" The demon spoke up. Her jade eyes drifted to the demon now who was staring at her. It was obvious to him that she was going to demand some sort of explanation for his behavior and why she could hear his chuckles in her soul. The place he was never supposed to be. "When you died or...rather, went to sleep. He was at a bit of a loss. Like he soul just stopped working like a busted clock. Even I haven't been able to taunt him these past four months. All he does is take notes from that crack pot of a professor come to your hospital room and read them to you. Pathetic" A glass of wine had appeared in his over sized hand. Swirling it with a disappointed stare.
"I used to think if you were gone I could destroy him and let the madness take him over. But it appears I was wrong in that respect." The demon sighed sorrowfully. Maka looked around. The black room was duller than it used to be. Like a thin layer of dust covered everything, even Soul himself.
"But I didn't die! Soul did! He sacrificed himself stupidly and-" The demon waved a hand to cut her off.
"That was all my doing. So was the last so called seven months. I did it so I could remain here. If I didn't I would've turned to a dull husk like him," He gestured to Soul. "Later I realized that maybe it was his influence. He always wanted to be your happy ending you know. His words not me. He started sounding like a sap at one point after the anger. You see Maka, what really happened that day was that yes, Soul did try and sacrifice himself for you. But you threw him away so he wouldn't be harmed. When that grummy witch got a hand on your soul, he took her by surprise and sliced her open. Right through her soul. In a defense mechanism your soul closed itself off to everyone except soul himself. But he is too much an idiot to access it so I had to. It took a while but I managed to let you hear the outside world"
Maka stared at Soul. She kinda wanted to kick him but also wanted to kiss him like snow white
"Don't you dare" The demon gave a warning.
He obviously didn't fancy romance that often. She cast her glance at the piano and then back to Soul. They were connected. That's why the sorrowful demonic notes were playing even in his absence of it. "How come Soul couldn't figure it out. It's a door, not really that difficult to open"
The demon sighed and gestured to him before taking a large gulp of his wine. She guessed he meant his condition. It'd be hard to open a door in that state. Like an empty shell of a person. Nothing but lying in the same spot for days on end."Soul?" She stood beside him. Flopsy wiggled with interest at her partner. She saw it, his eyelids twitch. Maybe she needed to be louder...
"Soul!" Maka said sternly, as if to catch his attention. Color pulsed throughout the room but didn't stay and faded once again. The little demon looked around, intrigued by the action of his soul. "What's he currently doing?" Maka asked. Touching his face with gentle hands. The demon closed his eyes and sighed, tapping into Soul's senses.
"Almost completely asleep in class" Maka let out a laugh which puzzled the demon. "Did I say something funny to you?" He rumpled his nose. Eyes following her every tiny movement and the plush rabbits. Which was watching him carefully with that neutral sewn on expression. Making sure he wouldn't do anything funny while Maka's back was turned.
"No, it's just...something he would do. I bet the notes he took for me are horrible" She giggles lightly. Unknown to her, Soul's soul reacted to the sound of her laughter. Slowly waking. "He-He would either fall sleep or eat those stupid gummy fish in glass!" Maka laughed harder, causing an uncharacteristically warm smile spread on his lips. One that Soul would wear when he was alone with her.
"You know he would eat them like a shark at home! Like a freaking shark! The look on his face was like I caught him-ahaha!" Maka found it too hard to speak as she clutched her sides. Her laughter echoing throughout the room.
Color returned to the red and black tiles. The black curtains getting back their shine as she laughed. The candles glowed brighter and the piano gained its gloss back. "O-Or the first time he burned the curry! Heh heh he-he tried to blame me for it but he turned the stove up to make it cook faster! And he was so hungry that he ate it!" Maka was unaware of her surroundings. How they were getting back their glow from her laughter at the memories. Flospy the rabbit seemed to notice. She also noticed the piano stopped playing such gloomy tune and turned to something much lighter. Her long ears perked up at the pleasant sound playing.
As Maka laughed harder, Soul began to move. His opened an eye to see if it really was her laughing loudly at him. Giggling about gummy fish and burnt curry on the ground clutching her sides because she was laughing too hard. Maka didn't seem notice his movement when he turned on his side to look down at her. Ash blonde pig tails were splayed out on the floor. Tiny tears pricked the corner of her eyes from the huge grin she wore on her face.
She was an enchanting site there on the ground. Laughing so hard at him for his stupidity over the years of their partnership.
"I'm pretty sure the look on your face when I caught you singing in your room with a hair brush like a microphone beats all of that" He grinned down at her.
Maka's eyes snapped wide open just as her partners did in class.
Soul shot up with a shocked face. Interrupting Steins lecture and catching the classes entire attention. The doctor looked up at him, readjusting his glasses on his stitched face. Dull olive eyes stared at wide scarlet ones. The messy spikes were askew as usual these past months and Black*Star looked up at him. He was about to open his mouth to say something snarky since his partner wasn't there but held it. There was a look in Soul's eyes. A look that had been gone for so long was back.
"She's awake" It was barely a whisper but Black*Star stared in shock "Maka's awake!" He shouted before tearing out of the room. Stein let his jaw drop before through his book onto his desk chasing after Soul.
"Class study something" He shouted over his shoulder.
"Soul-kun has been very sad lately, I just know he'll be delighted to hear that you're awake now Maka-chan" Tsubaki peeled an apple by her bed. Her subtle scent of perfume was more relaxing than the smell of the hospital. Her raven haired friend had been arranging the peach roses by her bed side table. Adding in some stocks of lavender at the side to mix and create a pleasant view. Maka only one person who would know that peach roses were her favorite. So the little demon hadn't been lying when he said that her partner visited everyday- or was it week?
Maka smiled politely back. The doctors were amazed that she had woken up and questioned her. But Maka simply shook her head and told them she didn't know how. When they had left Tsubaki asked and Maka told her everything
"It was like I was here. But the world was different. Soul had died instead and it was like seven long months of grieving. Strange things started to happen then. Soul came back from the dead, the witch came back looking for my soul. Everything was strange but I never questioned it. But then I think I woke up before, but I just didn't open my eyes. I went inside my soul Tsubaki, I saw what it was like there! I t was like a forest with really tall book shelves everywhere. The sky was so pretty and the moon was strange there! Like a white marble in the sky!"
Tsubaki listened to ever detail Maka told her. Nodding and smiling because her best friend was back and she was okay and normal. Soul's mental health would get better and he would start showing off his shark toothed grin again. Black*Star would go back o being himself and Kid would obsess over symmetry again and Liz and Patty would brighten up again. They would stop reverting back to what they were when they were on the streets. Tsubaki never guessed that if one of their friends was in a coma they would all deteriorate like this. She shuddered to think what would happen if one of them died. That thought wasn't pleasant as Maka happily took and apple slice that Tsubaki offered her. Taking small bites and chewing thoroughly before swallowing.
It felt strange when she swallowed it even more so when it filled her stomach with just two slices of the fruit. Maka guessed she been living off nutrients for the past while and her body wasn't used to solid foods yet.
"Soul will be very happy and energetic again. He hasn't been himself" Tsubaki quietly whispered. Maka gave her a warm smile. She should hear running footsteps in the hallway. Sneakers slapping against the tiled floor of the hospital. Doctors shouting at him to slow down and other frantic words in the air.
Her room door swung open
He stood there panting. Wide eyes as he his eyes found her. Messy hair and thin looking body wrapped in a hospital gown. Tsubaki jumped slightly from the commotion but Maka remained calm. Slowly turning around to see him. A bright smile on her face as her tired eyes found his. She couldn't help the smile on her face.
