HITS: I figured I should switch things up a bit, seeing as how Jay's view isn't really changing. Sorry if it seems rushed or different, but I was a bit pressed to write this one. If anything, blame [Name Purposely Left Blank]
You know who you are, bud. Still hope you're enjoying the story.
It's been a week since they moved in with him. She watched him at lunch as he slept once again. She wasn't the only one baffled by him either. She and Nerine had a conversation about how desensitized he was. According to Rin, he was stabbed and managed to shoot a fellow student in the leg without hesitation or care. What was worse was that guy he hung around with, the one with the long hair and trench coat. He killed people and got away with it. Her father trusts him, but he terrified them all.
Even when Jay slept she was scared. Some times she would look over and see something move under his skin only slightly. He was having another dream. She could always tell because his eyes were tightly shut and his hands would twitch. They never asked him about it, but he was always on edge. He always looked the opposite of how he sounded. If he was happy, he looked furious. It was actually getting to the point that no one bothered to wake him at lunch. It wasn't much different without him. He might say a few things at first, but he'd sleep near the edge of the roof in the end.
Rin walked up and nudged him. Jay didn't move. It was getting harder and harder to wake him. At home, he would sleep for most of the day and he was still tired. Maybe he processed everything he went through when he went to sleep. His eyes opened slowly. Normally they would have shot open and Rin would be on the ground, but he just blinked a few times before his eyes rolled to Rin. With a sigh, he forced himself to his feet. It looked like it took a great amount of effort. Sia was watching his eyes when they closed tightly in the slightest of pained expressions.
She focused on those bright green eyes of his. She always noticed the way he looked at the officer he was always around. His eyes would get dull when he looked at someone he was comfortable around. They got sharp the moment he looked at someone he wasn't used to. Sia was forced to notice these subtle signs since he never showed any emotion deeper than anger. She wasn't sure if the others noticed them. Rin led Jay out of the classroom. Just before the door shut, he looked right at her. Her heart skipped a beat. Not as it did when Rin looked at her, that was a good feeling. This was fear. His eyes would always get a slight orange tint to them right before something bad happened. The worst part, he smiled just now.
She looked at Nerine, who looked curious at the least. She didn't see it then. Five minutes later, as Sia and Nerine gathered their things for lunch, a shriek of pain came from the hall. Sia knew it had something to do with Jay and flung the door open. She saw a sickening scene. Jay had a Senior on his knees, his arms pulled behind him. Jay's foot was planted on his back with an arm in each hand. His eyes were tinted a light orange, almost unnoticeable, and he wasn't smiling anymore. The Senior cried out again as Jay's grip tightened.
"Say it."
The Senior looked to the group of people watching. Sia recognized a lot of them from the three fan clubs for the girls. They were probably meant as back up. "Aren't you guys gonna help me?!"
He screamed again as Jay gave them a quick jerk, "The moment they take a step towards me, you lose an arm. They take another, you lose the other. Now say it!"
The Senior looked at Rin, who was on the ground against the wall with a scared expression, "We- we'll leave you alone, we swear!"
"And the rest of you?"
The group members looked at one another and mumbled something. Jay pulled the Senior's left arm until it cracked, "I can't hear you!"
The whole group bowed, "We promise!"
Jay looked to Rin, "Good enough?"
Rin nodded, "Yeah, it's fine. Now let them go!"
Jay looked disappointed as he released the Senior. Jay yawned and walked back into the classroom. He stopped when Sia looked at him. He opened his mouth to say something, but a loud and joyous voice echoed through the halls, "Attention jackass!"
Jay let out a small gasp and dashed into the hallway. Sia and Nerine followed and saw the largest man they had ever seen. He had to duck to get through the doors and was built like a monster. His black hair reached just above his nose. A large scar ran from his left eye to his chin. His massive arms were outstretched. Jay did the same, "Luka!"
The massive man grabbed Jay and lifted him into the air in a bear hug before quickly being let go. Jay looked so happy that Sia almost thought it wasn't Jay. Jay took a step back, "Jeez man, do you every stop growing?"
"If he did, that would make my job easy."
Jay and the one called Luka perked up as they turned to the end of the hall Luka had come from. A tall blond haired woman in jeans and a green jacket was walking towards them, leaving all the boys staring at her as she passed. Jay smiled even more as he crossed his arms, "Damn it Luka, what did I say about no pets?"
The woman giggled as she got within three feet of him, "What a shame. I guess you'll have to sleep inside this time."
Jay laughed too. She gave him a hug, which he returned, "Good to see you, Ella."
"You too, Jay."
Luka tapped Jay on the head, "Hey now, let me have a go."
"You had her on the way here."
"What can I say? I get lonely."
The woman released Jay and wrapped her arm around Luka's waist. Rin finally stood up, "Jay, who are these people?"
Jay took a deep breath and clapped his hands, "This giant here is Luka, my best friend. This is his girlfriend Ella."
Jay looked genuinely happy for the first time since she saw him. Nerine pulled her inside and spoke in a hushed tone, "Are all of Jay's friend like him?"
"I don't know, but did you notice Jay?"
"What about him?"
"He looks happy for once."
"For once?"
"Think back, have you ever seen Jay honestly happy in the past two weeks we've known him?"
"I… no, I don't think so. I never really paid attention."
"Look, look!"
Nerine peaked out and saw the wondrous sight. Jay was smiling and laughing and his eyes were as dull as ever. "Wow, you're right. He was never like that around here. I… don't like it."
Sia was confused, "Wait what?"
"Think about it. We've been trying to make him feel welcome, but he's only gotten more and more distant. It's kinda scary that someone could be so closed off."
"So… why don't you like it?"
"Well, I'm curious what that man did to be so friendly with him."
"He seems like a nice guy. We could probably ask him."
"I don't want to see like I'm invading his privacy though."
"Well you better hurry, their leaving."
"What?! Where are they going? It's still the middle of the day!"
"They don't seem to care."
"O-okay then, after school we will ask him."
"We?"
"You have to be curious too."
"Oh I am, but it may seem like an interrogation with two of us."
With that, they spent their whole lunch and the rest of the day wondering about the trio. When they got home, no one noticed them.
"Man, you were right about the shirtless thing."
Jay tossed a soda to Luka, who was lying down on the couch.
"I told you, the weather is perfect for it."
Ella walked in wearing her jeans and a bikini top, "You weren't kidding."
She sat on Luka's well-defined abdominal muscles. Jay looked away, "Should you really be participating?"
Luka laughed, causing Ella to bounce a little, "Come on, it isn't anything new for you. We still remember the beach incident."
"Please die now."
Ella leaned back, "If it means anything, you were always a gentleman."
"You die too."
Jay actually looked a bit red. They turned on a horror movie. It was English, so they couldn't really understand it, Luka and Jay spoke English too, so the girls couldn't understand much. Luka said something in an enraged fashion and pointed at a woman on the screen who was screaming. Jay made a witty remark that got all three laughing. Ella said something in a concerned voice, suddenly trying to cover herself. Luka and Jay were instantly saying things. She sighed and threw her head back, staring right at the four new arrivals.
"Shape up boys, we have guests."
Luka poked his head over the edge, "What the? Who are they?"
Jay pointed to them, "They are my new roommates. We all go to the same school so it makes sense that we would live together."
"Yeah, if you're a rapist."
"Damn you, Luka!"
"What? Would harem be better?"
"DIE!"
"Ow! You've gotten stronger."
Jay slugged Luka in his knee. Ella got off Luka and went to the hallway, where her shirt was hung on a coat rack they never even noticed. Kaede smiled to the best of her ability, "I'll go make dinner."
Ella stopped her, "Please, let me. It's the least we can do."
Kaede went to protest, but instead she looked at Jay for support, "Actually… Kaede here usually does the cooking. I don't know why, but she really likes to cook."
"Is she any good?"
"I dare say better than you."
Luka sat up, "The is quite the claim."
"She is quite the woman."
"I accept your challenge! Ella, hold off for tonight. We'll see how this goes."
Just then, Tas burst into the room with alarming speed and a shotgun, "Hey guys, who wants to kill some terrorists?"
Luka looked from Tas to Jay, "What… did he just…"
Jay sighed, "He does this from time to time. He shot some students, went on a terrorist killing spree, blew up three houses, and breaks into my home regularly."
"How is he not in jail?"
"He works for the government."
Luka looked at Tas; "You're serious?"
Tas looked at his watch, "For the next five minute, I am. After that, I'll have to find them again."
Luka stood up, "I guess I'll be late for dinner."
Jay waved, "Have fun."
"Oh, you have to come."
"Why?"
"Because I'm gonna show you what it means to be a Bioweapon, a Prototype."
Jay got up, he knew he would go, willingly or otherwise. He looked at Sia, "On the off chance Mr. Jackass gets me killed, you're in charge. Take care of the place."
Tas waved him towards the door, "What are you doing? Writing a will? Come on!"
Jay stormed off towards him, "Fine! Let's make this quick, I have to clean up and study when I get back."
He slammed the door behind him. Ella started laughing, "And while the men are away, the women shall play."
She leapt over the couch and landed with a light thud as she turned up the TV. Nerine was the first to sit down, "Actually before we do… whatever it is you had planned, I had some questions I was hoping you could answer."
Ella muted the TV and leaned back, "Shoot."
Nerine took a deep breath as her cheeks reddened, "What do you know about Jay?"
Ella seemed to process the question, "Gonna need to be a bit more specific."
"Well, the basic things. Where's he from? Why's he always angry?"
"Okay, I got it now. Luka's known him a lot longer than me. In fact, I used to beat on him daily. Don't ask why. He was always quiet, gave off this feeling of hiding in a shelter. I think Luka said he was from Europe, but he must have left the accent behind. Trust me, you haven't seen him angry yet, it comes back out when he's pissed."
"So he was very shy?"
"Hell no! He may not have joined in on every conversation, but god forbid you get his attention. He will speak his mind no matter who's around and he would have such fire in his eyes that it usually made his opponent back down. The Debate team bugged him to join, but they stopped when he decked the team captain."
"So he's a delinquent?"
"Nope. He'd do everything in his power to help someone and then find someone who can do it better than he could. The minute things settle down though, he falls asleep. I hated how machine like he was. Then one day I saw him smiling and laughing with Luka, who was probably the biggest badass in the whole country. I'd been aiming for him for a whole year by that time and seeing that little prick near him made me furious. As the years went on, Luka and Jay hung out more and more. Once Jay got that scar on his arm, they were closer than ever. Jay also sprouted up from someone half Luka's size to almost his height. If I hadn't been going for Luka, I might've gone for him."
"He was secluded then?"
"Full blown isolated. No one even noticed him until a few girls stayed after school and saw him in the Gym. It was only them on the entire school grounds, so Jay must have thought it was safe."
"To go to the Gym?"
"No, to take off his shirt. I've only seen it a few times but they were the first. After that they hounded him and eventually more girls followed. He turned down seventy nine girls."
"What for?!"
"Well, in America, a ton of young girls, myself included, love to flaunt ourselves. Ripped jeans, torn shirts, see through, skin tight, and things like that. He made it clear to every single one of them that if he was to date someone, he wanted it to be special. If everyone can see their breasts through their shirt, he wants nothing to do with them. About two weeks after being Enemy of Women #1, during which he set me up with Luka, he vanished without a goodbye to anyone except Luka."
"So he's angry all the time because he didn't want to be like everyone else?"
"Sort of. He's mad because they expect him to act how they want. Every time someone invited him to do something, they expect him to act different than he was. He still refuses to be how people want. I didn't expect him to run all the way here to get away from it all."
"So to make him smile, we just need to let him be himself."
Sia sat down on the opposite side of Ella, "We've let him be himself this whole time, but he only seems happy when he hurts people."
Ella shied back into the couch, "That… may be my fault. I beat him down daily and he couldn't do anything about it. It may be his form of revenge. If you dress like you have some self-respect, let him be him, and don't mind his thirst for violence, then you could have a chance with him. Now enough of Jay. Let's kick back and relax.
A few hours in, Kaede had made snacks, Ella had ordered a horror movie, Rin had showed up, and everyone was on the couch cowering in fear. In the movie, the victim (some woman who was actually a good actor) was barricading the door with everything she could as the killer slowly came up the stairs. The woman pressed the desk against the door and braced against it. The killer simply kicked the door in and sent the desk flying. As the woman recomposed herself, she backed up so far she landed on the bed. Just before the killer brought the steak knife down on her, three gunshots rang out. Behind the killer was the woman's boyfriend, who was now missing an arm and barely holding his innards inside himself after a trip to the basement. The killer collapsed and so did the boyfriend as the blood loss hit him. The girl ran up to him and caught him. She watched him die in her arms. In a fit of pure rage, she grabbed the killer's knife and started stabbing the killer's corpse. As the screen was fading out, it shot back into focus as the killer's arm shot up and caught her wrist. It went pitch black as the killer's laugh echoed.
"Note to self: foreign horror movies are so much better."
There was a knock on the door followed by the conversation of three men. Ella went to get it. As Kaede went to clean the snacks, a gunshot rang out. With a shriek, Ella kicked away from five armed men, gripping her bleeding shoulder. The largest of the men had the only gun while the rest had pipes and bats. The big man aimed the gun at no one in particular, "Down. Now."
Everyone got down, but Sia was close to the stairs. As the men strolled leisurely through the house smashing most things of value that they couldn't carry, Sia inched closer and closer to the stairs. When one of the men tried to get friendly with Ella, she rammed her skull into his. The man started to beat Ella. Rin tried to defend her, but was punched so hard he couldn't get back up. Sia used this chance to run. She made the mistake of looking back as she ran up the stairs. She saw the big man slowly following her. She took the first door on her right.
Sia crashed through the door and closed it, locked it, and barricaded it with the nearby desk. The men downstairs were occupied with Ella, but the big one was still coming. Sia retreated to the king sized bed in the corner and fell onto the bed as something metal fell to the floor. Her eyes went wide. It was a gun.
It was a silver gun with something engraved in English on the barrel. The man outside kept bashing the door. With a few precise shots, the lock was blown off. He pulled out what remained of the knob and went to open the door. The desk blocked his casual approach. Sia slid under the bed as far back as she could, taking the gun with her. She didn't really know how to professionally use one, but she got the basics from Jay and Tas talking about their favorites.
Then it hit her. She was holding Jay's favorite gun. That meant that she was in his room, hiding under his bed. She felt around her pockets for her phone, but quickly remembered she left it on the table in the dining room. She heard gunshots from the floor below as well as a grown man shrieking in pain. Her heart stopped. It sounded like Rin.
The door blew open, knocking the desk and everything on it to the floor. The man strolled in casually like he owned the place, "Come on out, kid. If you come out now, we can have some fun. Who knows, I may even spare your friends." He dropped to his knees and stared at Sia. She screamed as he reached in, "Got ya!"
He grabbed her hair and pulled her forcefully out from under the bed. She was suspended two inches off the ground. It felt like he would rip her head off by her hair. He eyes the gun she held, "Ooh, what a piece of work, both you and the gun. I bet you planned on using that on poor old me. Guess I have to teach you not to play with guns… the hard way."
He ripped the gun from her hands and pointed it at her chest. She fell to the floor as the man cried out in pain. Red drops fell to the floor from his back as another pair of legs walked in just as casually as he did, hands thrust into his pockets. This time, however, the new man did own the place.
"You're new to this household, so I'll give you the rundown. Rule number one: No one threatens my guests but me."
A black tentacle like appendage burst out of the man's stomach and started to creep towards his neck.
"Rule number two: No one wrecks my house but me."
The tentacle wrapped around the man's neck and then knotted itself to form a sickening noose.
"Rule number three: No one touches my gun but… who?"
The man craned his head over his shoulder as the tentacle tightened around his neck, "You?"
The appendage drew taunt as the man was lifted into the air. Whether he was dying of blood loss from his stomach or from this hanging, she wasn't sure. He flailed about as a quiet chuckle filled the room, "Correct."
The tentacle jerked to the side, breaking the man's neck. As the tentacle unwound itself and retreated back through the man's stomach, the corpse was practically absorbed into the surface of its killer.
Jay, the monster in human clothing, was showing his unexpectedly literal monster side. His right arm was engulfed up to the shoulder in a moving black material covered with dull barbs that would pulse a faint red now and again. His right eye was glowing a shade of orange so bright he had no iris or pupil, just a mass of orange. His veins were black throughout his whole body.
Sia grabbed the gun and backed up to the bed frame. She aimed at his chest, a target she was most likely to hit. Jay crouched down and shuffled closer, Sia whimpering with every inch he took. He slowly pressed his black index finger to the bottom of the barrel and moved it up so it was aimed at his forehead. Sia didn't want to kill him, just keep him away from her.
"Go on, do it. I won't be mad, I promise. Let off some steam."
His normal hand gently wrapped around hers, slipping into the trigger guard. With the same smile he used to greet Luka that very morning, he pulled the trigger for her. With a deafening bang, the bullet entered his skull… then pushed backwards until it fell out of his forehead.
"See? Let loose."
She didn't have the strength to hold the gun anymore. That final surprise did it for her. The gun clattered to the ground and Sia, thankful to be saved by another friendly living thing, threw her arms around the monster in front of her. Jay was surprised, she knew because he tensed up, but he let out the breath he was holding. She felt two human hands wrap around her back. Tears that had started long ago still flowed strong, but with new purpose, relief.
After a few minutes, she had the strength to stand, but didn't want to. Jay was beyond warm, but more important right now was the fact he was her form of safety. He carried her bridal style into the hallway; the walls coated with blood yet no corpse in sight. The stairs were clean and, aside from much of the destroyed furniture, so was the whole first floor. Jay's breathing was a calm and steady rhythm, his heartbeat like thunder. Despite the damage and puddles of blood that put Sia on the verge of throwing up and the massive amount of spent bullet casings on the floor, there were no corpses. Out in the street, they could see Tas and Luka smacking around someone that was purposely left alive.
In the living room, which was the hardest hit, everyone was gathered. Ella had a bullet wound in her shoulder and a few bruises on her face. The physical damage was small, but she was in the worse shape of all of them. She was seated on the couch with Kaede, who was tending to Ella's bruises. Nerine, Rin, and Primula were huddled together next to them. They made room for Sia as Jay set her down. As they swarmed her, he walked to his recliner, which was shot up, and collapsed in it with a quiet grunt. He leaned back and closed his eyes.
Nerine got her attention, "We saw that man follow you up, then Jay came and killed everyone! He went up to get you, but we heard some banging and a gunshot. Are you alright?"
Sia didn't look away from Jay, who looked like he was sleeping, "He saved me. I aimed at him. I-I was scared and I w-w-wouldn't shoot him, but h-he pressed it to his head and made me shoot."
"He made you kill that man? Jay!" Nerine got to her feet and slapped the sleeping man. She always was quick to act. Just before impact, his skin on his cheek turned black. Her hand hit the substance. He didn't even move from the blow. Her hand was stopped dead and was now stuck to the sticky black surface, which must have been different from the material that coated his arm earlier since that was like stone. As soon as she pulled away she was free.
Sia tried to clear it up, "No, Nerine. He made me shoot him."
"Jay made you shoot him? Where?"
"R-right in the head."
Jay laughed with his eyes closed, "It fell out."
Nerine fainted then and there. Probably for the best considering it all. Jay got to his feet, "Okay people. Your rooms should still be intact. Tas and me will stay up and stand guard while all of you go get some sleep. None of you are going to school tomorrow. You are staying here tonight Tsuchimi. You'll share Nerine's room. No funny business."
Luka walked in with a pipe covered in dried blood thrown over his shoulder, "And me?"
"I think I have a spare guest room upstairs, you and Ella can take that one. Tas will sleep on the couch, well, what's left of it. Go on now."
As everyone filtered out, Jay lifted Nerine effortlessly. He followed everyone else up and went to put her in her room. Her father and Sia's should be home soon from their drinking trip. Sia didn't want to wait in her room with Kaede and Primula. They would provide comfort, but they were just as vulnerable as she was. These girls, herself included, were used to peaceful life with the only violence being their fan clubs. Now people were after them, wanted them dead. She wanted to be near people who dealt with violence every day of their lives.
Rin couldn't even take on the people who chased him daily. Tas was a loose cannon. He gave the impression that he was as likely to shoot you as he was to help you. Luka, she knew nothing about. Besides, he might be comforting Ella, who probably needed it more than Sia. The only choice left was Jay. She walked into Jay's room, shutting the door behind her for what good it did. She curled up on his bed. It still smelled of Jay's natural scent. It was like flowers mixed with honey and masked by common male musk. She buried her face in his pillow.
Jay opened the door and sighed loudly, "Sia, what are you doing?"
Sia peaked her eyes up from the pillow and met his, noticing his eye no longer glowed, "I don't want to be alone."
"You have Kaede and Primula."
"I want to feel safe."
"And what makes you think I… ah. That shook you up, didn't it?"
She nodded, on the verge of tears again. Jay sighed and picked up the chair from the floor, placing it at the edge of the bed with the back towards Sia. He sat down so that he was facing the hall, but within arms reach of Sia. She crawled over to him. She curled up and reached out for him, but thought better of it. She closed her eyes, happy that she could feel his presence in the room even without seeing him. She just couldn't sleep though. It wasn't her position, it wasn't the temperature, and it wasn't that she wasn't tired. She still didn't feel safe. She must have shown distress on her face because the next thing she knew, Jay's hand was clasped tightly around her own. Now… now she felt safe. Sleep came upon her like a train without brakes. The last thing she saw was Jay's hand around hers. The last thing she smelled was his scent from the pillow. The last thing she heard was a soothing melody hummed by none other than him.
