Professor Luke and the dream road

Okay, in the last chapter I gave you a clue, and if you got it right congratulations, you're a clever person.

Now on with the chapter!

Luke guessed he was getting used to being wet and cold every night now.

But where was Flora? And Kat?

"Well hello there Luke." He turned. It was Flora. In her usual pink dress and black boots.

"Flora! There you are! Have you seen Kat?" Flora shifted uneasily.

"I think we should set off without Kat tonight. We can't wait for her when you need to be up tomorrow."

Luke looked at Flora suspiciously. Then he took a step towards her.

Bang! Flora shot forward and some bars appeared behind Luke. She laughed manically, cackling like a witch from hell.

"Welcome to prison, Luke. And I'm your jailer. Ahaha!" Luke gasped in astonishment and horror as Flora snapped handcuffs around his wrists and jerked him forward. "Well? Do you want to finish or not?" She jerked the chains again and cackled.

"Flora!" gasped Luke. "What's wrong with you?"

"What do you mean, what's wrong with me? I've never been better! Now I can finally torture you the way I've been wanting to ever since the day I-" Flora stumbled forward a little, then righted herself.

"I don't understand," whispered Luke, close to tears.

She gave him a withering look. "I wouldn't expect you to. I've never met such a stupid boy. You're completely worthless-poor Professor didn't realize until he adopted me and saw how utterly superior I was compared to you." She smiled, but there was no happy Flora behind that smile. It was cold.

"I don't believe you!" yelled Luke, fighting the tears. "You're not right. You're not Flora!"

"What makes you think that?" replied Flora, jerking on the chains. "You think I'm not like the Flora you see everyday? Well get used to it. That was all an act. This is the real me, the one who can do whatever she wants with you at night because tomorrow I can tell the Professor that the only reason I did this was because of the dream road. And he'll believe me, like he always does."

Luke was crying silently, tears rolling down his cheeks. "Flora-"

"Such a pathetic wimpy-ah!" she gasped. Luke stared at her. "You can't even stop crying in your dreams."

"Enough."

Flora whipped round, snarling. "What are you doing here?" she hissed venomously.

"I'm sorry Flora," said Kat and she grabbed Flora by her bruised neck and held a knife to it. Luke stared worriedly at her. "One false move and you die."

"Was that really necessary?" exclaimed Luke.

"Luke, she is what's been sent to drag you down. Yes. It was. Now come on. Today is Saturday, so I can keep her off you all night, but we need to keep moving."

"I'll kill you for this, Kat!" shrieked Flora.

Kat replied calmly, "Say what you like, Flora. The fact is, I can slice through your neck at any moment. So keep still." Luke gulped. He wasn't sure whether he liked this sadistic side to Kat.

They walked through the sharp stones, Luke wincing as his feet got pricked. Until Flora tried to make a getaway.

"Hiyaah!" she yelled and tried to push her way out of Kat's grip. The knife slid into Flora's neck and the blood exploded from her, and the road became a river of red.

"Flora!" screamed Luke, kneeling next to her. "Flora, speak to me. Please don't die. I don't care if you hate me." But it was too late. Flora lay, unmoving on the road.

Kat stood to the side. "Kat," whispered Luke, "What have you done? Flora is dead."

"Good," replied Kat firmly. "When she wakes up tomorrow she'll be fine. If she dies in the dream, the next day she's not injured. And the only reason she was sent here tonight is to torture you."

Luke stared at Kat, shaking his head in disbelief.

"If you don't like this part of it, well, fine, but this is what has to be done. The thing is, Luke, is that you hesitate before killing her because you're her brother. So she can torture you all she likes. But if you kill her, then it makes it easier. For both of you."

"What makes you so sure?" asked Luke sadly.

"Because I did what Flora did and I could never forgive myself. Ever. And I would have given anything, for someone to kill me."

They walked in silence for the rest of the way. Luke couldn't believe what he had just heard. And his overwhelming guilt over Flora plagued him.

Finally they reached the lake. "Go on then," said Kat.

Luke stepped to the edge of the lake. "Kat?" he said quietly. She raised her head.

"Thank you."

Then he jumped.
