THE KAGAMINE SHOW

(violin is playing to gentle music, and Miku starts to sing)

It's the Kagamine Word shoow…
Japanese is where we want to goo…
Hey-a, aahhh oooohhh…

「ミク」

Hello everyone! Welcome back to the Kagamine word show. I'm Miku Hatsuneミク初音, and this is my dear friend Luka Megurine ルカ巡音.

「ルカ」

Konichiwa. I hope you are all having a wonderful day!

「ミク」

Hai, hai. Today we are going to talk about making requests, because I'm sure you'd like to know how to ask for things if you ever visit Japan.. but, you must ask politely..

(Len is struggling with Kaito trying to get on stage)

「レン」

This- my- show- get off me-

「KAITO」

You promised to give the girls an episode-

「レン」

That was before she and the squirrel.. Kaito get OFF-

(Luka and Miku keep talking as if there's no interruption)

「ルカ」

…remember to always to keep your tone nice and friendly! Also, if it's obvious you are asking a question with the sound of your voice, you don't have to add 'ka' at the end of your sentence all the time…

「レン」

But they're so BORING-

「KAITO」

Don't make me get Rin out here-

「ミク」

…and we shall practice it with our lovely viewers at home, so we might share in the experience…

(Kaito has tackled Len and dragged him off the stage)

「ルカ」

Let's get started, shall we, Miku-chan? How does one ask if it's okay to do things?

「ミク」

Oh yes. . well there are many ways, but we'll start with the easiest first, the てもいいですか?(-te mo ii desu ka?) form.

You see, all you have to do is put the adj or verb into て/te form, and then politely add, mo ii desu ka? (is it okay if..?)

「ルカ」

That sounds simple! Let's give it a try. How would I say "Is it okay if I drink this?"

「ミク」

Well, "to drink" in て/te form would be nonde. So, that would be 飲んでもいいですか? (nonde mo ii desu ka?)

「ルカ」

Awesome! Here are some other examples to give more idea on this form.

明日、休んでもいいですか? Ashita, yasunde mo ii desu ka? (Is it okay if I take a day off tomorrow?)

明日、行かなくてもいいですか? Ashita, ikanakute mo ii desu ka? (Is it okay if I don't go tomorrow?)

おいしくなくてもいいですか? Oishiikunakute mo ii desu ka? (Is it okay if it's not tasty?)

タクシーでもいいですか? Taku-shi de mo ii desu ka? (Is it okay to go by Taxi?)

Our first example is a verb, "yasumu" (to rest/take time off) into te form – yasunde.

Our second is also a verb, "iku" (to go) but this time it's negative (to not got). So, instead of turning it into itte, it becomes the negative ikanakute.

Our third is using an adjective, "oishii" (tasty). But, just like the previous, it's been made negative (not tasty). So, it becomes oishiikunakute.

And finally our last one is a noun – "by taxi." You cannot turn nouns into te form, so instead we add de/ で next to it. Takushi de.

「ミク」

Nice work everyone! Hey, what's that sound?

「KAITO」

That's probably Len, trying to break down the door. He's out there by himself..

「ルカ」

Oh no, he has sweet little Kamu-chan to keep him company.

「KAITO」

Kamu..chan..? That rabid squirrel?

「ルカ」

Oh no, he wouldn't hurt a fly! Anyway, how else can you ask for things using this form, Miku-chan?

「ミク」

Well you can also use..

かまいませんか? kamaimasen ka? (Do you mind if?)

いいでしょうか?ii deshou ka? (also means Do you mind if?, but in a way implying you want the other person to do this thing with you, but not always)

よろしいですか? yoroshii desu ka? (this is very formal and polite)

These other 3 ways are used in the same way –te mo ii desu ka? But instead of –mo ii desu ka? You use one of the mentioned.

For example, このケーキーは食べてもいいでしょうか? Kono ke-ki wa tabete mo ii deshou ka? Do you mind if I eat this cake?

「ルカ」

Well, that's all the time we have for today! I hope you have enjoyed the –te mo ii? form! Next time you are asking for permission, try and wonder how you might ask in Japanese.

「ルカ & ミク」

(they wave at the screen and say together)

See you next time!

(Meanwhile, backstage…)

(Len is trying to stay away from the squirrel)

「レン」

I mean it man.. come near me and I'll rip your tail off..

「かむちゃん」

(adorable squeaks)

(inches toward Len)

「レン」

I mean it! Don't come any closer!

(Len covers his butt)

「かむちゃん」

Note from the director:

Hey guys. I've been MIA for about a year now, but this time I'm willing to step it up, if you really want to learn. I'm not a good teacher, but I can type so whatever.

Follow me on tumblr (same name) for daily words and advice, and you can also ask me questions more easily there. The message system here is nutty for me.
