Right, sorry that this is so late, I had some exams I needed to concentrate on but I'm back, so here's a little something. I'll be more regular with updates in future, I promise. Sorry!
Being dragged home wasn't exactly what I had anticipated after 20 minutes of being gawked at by medical students, but then again, what had I expected? Of course Matthew was going to find me. Of course he would react like this.
In his haste he forgot that it was hard for me to walk in these new shoes, this new dress. I wasn't used to it. Stumbling over the cobbled streets, I tried to keep up with his fast, angry stride. Into a cab and off we went.
The whole of the drive I had to look at his furious expression, his throbbing vein. I took a breath and all my courage collected in my chest.
"Why didn't you tell me he was a demon?" I tried to sound confident. My shuddering at his answer gave me away.
"Diana. You were supposed to wait for me. He could have hurt you. Those medical students, most of them are vampires. What on earth made you think that was a good idea?" His voice was low and angry. Worse than shouting and more threatening than accusing.
"I'm sorry. I wanted to know how our children were, you weren't there. So I went alone. And as you can see," I presented my arms and and face
"Nothing happened!"
A low growl escaped his lips.
"You have no idea what could have happened, Diana. You think that the 21st Century is brutal? Times that by the disease and poverty of the 19th Century. Then you'll know what you're up against. Now please, just calm down and promise me that you won't run off again. Because the next time you might just find yourself lying in the gutter with a knife in your abdomen." His words were harsh but I felt his pain. It had clearly happened before.
The cab stopped. I looked out and saw the pretty little detached house that we lived in. The brickwork stared back at me, as Matthew took my hand and pulled me to my feet.
He gracefully stepped onto the street, easing me out of the cab a second later. Tossing the cab driver a few coins, he put his arm around my waist and we made our way up the stone steps to the front door.
*knock knock knock*
20 seconds passed and Emily opened the door.
"I'm sorry, Mr and Mrs Holben are-oh dear, I'm so sorry sir. Ma'am." She moved aside and let us in.
"Would you like something to drink, or maybe-"
"That would be lovely, Emily. We'll have some tea, and some biscuits for Mrs Holben."
"Yes, sir." She nodded and went into the kitchen.
Matthew turned to me.
"Now. I would like you to go upstairs and check the bed. You'll see why I was late..." His mysterious smile was a welcome change after his episode of bad temper and I grinned, sprinting up the stairs.
"Not too fast now, Judith!" He called up but I no longer cared.
I opened the door, my wits a little more collected, and carefully closed it behind me. I let the slightly musty air welcome me and wondered over to the window to open it. The wind that rushed in wasn't exactly fresh but it would do for a second. I turned and approached the bed. On it lay a beautiful evening gown in ivory silk. It was embroidered in white, light blue and beige. It had a high wasp waist and a little train. The décolletage was high and rectangular, matching the fashion at this point in time. I couldn't wait to try it on!
I quickly undid the back of my dress and slipped out of it, folding it over the end of the bed rail. Carefully, I picked up the dress and stepped into it, trying to pull it up slowly over my knees and then my waist. In an effort not to rip it, I took my time with it, letting the new fabric adjust to my form. I lifted up the sleeves and slid in first one arm and then the other. I heard the door open and knew who it was by the way the door gently, carefully closed again. I felt Matthew's hand on my back, closing the buttons one by one. His cool hands rested on my shoulders. He turned me towards the mirror.
"You look stunning." He whispered into my ear and I spun round to kiss him but he was already at the other end of the room. He held a box.
"Finishing touch." He winked, opening the black box which was the size of a present day shoe box. But inside was a black satin jacket. I gasped, it's beauty sinking in slowly like water seeping into sand.
My hands stroked over the soft fabric, picking it up. He took it from me and unfolded it, holding it open for me to put on. My hand carefully found the sleeve and I moved into it, doing the same with the other one. Matthew walked me to the mirror and I looked into it, seeing only his face.
"Look at you." He smiled appreciatively. I looked at my dress, drinking in the perfection of its layers and the soft transition from silk to satin.
I truly looked ravishing.
And in that moment, my hair turned a prettier shade of light brown than it already was and the little wisps of hair slowly glided up into stylish curls on the top of my head. I silently whispered a thanks for not looking too out of place and sat down on the bed.
"Come on, let's have some tea. We have a special party later today. The telephone line between Paris and London has been opened. It's a big event for Alexander Bell, we'll want to congratulate him on his achievement." He reached for my hand, pulling me up into his arms.
I felt excitement bubble up in me. I would meet one of the greatest men in just a few hours. These hours couldn't pass fast enough...
