Test Score-D

She was most happy with her brothers.

There wasn't any doubt about that.

Since day one, no matter what, she stuck by their sides. They were the only ones that cared for her. They acted as a replacement. The man they all shared genes with was not their father and would never be.

Elena swore she would love them beyond death. So when they were angry with her, it hurt her, much more than it should. Much more.

Beady green irises glared at the paper marked with a red 'D'. A tired sigh escaped pale lips. With arms and legs crossed Mephiles closed his eyes in disappointment.

"Explain yourself, now," Shadow demanded with hateful crimson orbs. Anger radiated off his very being, staring down the young girl who coward under his glare. Bloodied eyes were lit with unquenchable flames fired because of her test score.

"I-I wasn't-didn't know any of the stuff on there," she explained timidly. Her orange murky eyes stayed on the floor while she stood with hands clasped in front of her.

Science was never the young girl's best subject. Never. Elena didn't get a single thing in the class. How was she supposed to know what ions and isotopes were? She barely knew the difference between an atom and an element. It wasn't even her fault. Her IMAST teacher was too blind and deaf to teach anyway.

"And why not," the ruby marked hedgehog snapped.

"Because Mrs. Carter doesn't teach half of the stuff on the test. All she does is shuffle around the class room and yells at me! She hates me for no reason!" Elena defended, tears burning her eyes.

"Maybe if you didn't talk so much, she wouldn't dislike you. Don't think we don't hear from her," Elena opened her mouth to talk but Shadow beat her to it. "Elena, you sit there and talk the entire period. If you just stop talking and listen once in awhile, you wouldn't fail her test."

The thirteen-year-old's quills bristled becoming angry with how she was being reprimanded. Elena scowled at him, frustration and angry overwhelming her common sense. Fully ignoring the consequences of what she was about to say, she shouted, "Maybe if you just shut-up and listen you would understand." After panting for a few seconds, the reality of what she had just said it her. As Shadow stared incredulously at her because of her outburst, she knew things were not going to go well. But when Mephiles turned to look at her with an ugly scowl plastering his features she could only think one thing.

The torture was only about to begin.

"Let the flames of hatred light aflame"

The eighth grade dance was tonight.

She had been waiting for this for awhile now.

Elena doodled in her sixth period notebook. Despite what had happened last night, a bright smile graced her youthful features. Yes, she was only thirteen, and yes, an eighth grade dance wasn't anything to get excited about, but she couldn't help it! Who wouldn't be happy about it, especially if their year-long crush asked to take them to it?

Jaeger Princeton.

The young-incredibly gorgeous in her eyes-brown furred bat had asked her out. All the relentless worrying about her ex-best friend's tormenting had vanished from the depths of her mind only to be replaced by images of the handsome boy. When Sarah, had knocked her over, he was the one to come by and help her with her papers. After the white hedgehog had rudely told her to get out of the way, he went up to her and made her feel a whole lot better.

Out of unknown fright, she had not told her brothers of her oppressor. Elena thought if she just ignored it, everything would be okay. Soon enough, Sarah would have to get tire of her and thus leave her alone. Besides, some of the things she had done didn't get to her. After four years of abuse from her father, someone more ruthless, it wasn't very hard to pay no attention to the other girl.

But the thing that bothered her was not her rude actions, but what she had the potential to do. Being almost a sister to her, Elena had shared everything with her. And when she meant everything, she meant everything. Back then, Sarah was her only source of release as she did not want to load her brothers with anymore of the burden they carried on their worn backs.

She even told her some of the stuff she hadn't dared to tell her brothers.

Sarah the mongoose had the knowledge of what went on in her perfect little home. She could do so much damage in so many ways, and that was what worried Elena so much.

After being accused of kissing her boyfriend, something she didn't do, Sarah, from that point on, hated her very guts. She had somehow managed to turn the important people in her life against her. The ebony girl didn't even know why she was so hateful towards her. They were twelve, at the time, and fighting over a boy. That's just ridiculous.

But that didn't matter. Tonight, she would be with the only person in school who really cared about her.

It didn't matter if she was forbidden to go by her brothers.

Tears already began to constrict her throat at the thought.

The bell was almost about to ring, for classes to begin, and in came her special guy. Jaeger sat more near the back of the classroom. He set his books for this class on the idle desk and graciously sat in the chair, flipping to the page written on the board. His brown bangs ruffled as he ran a hand through them. His black wings folded neatly behind him.

Elena, needing some type of reassurance that everything would be alright, wanted to go over there and just talk to him. She looked at her notebook, eyes scanning over the doodled page, debating whether or not to talk to him. After moments of contemplating, with red cheeks, she stood up and unconfidently went over to the brown bat.

"Hey Jaeger," she said, voice cracking. The tears she could feel welding up in her eyes took more of a toll than she realized.

His expression did not help whatsoever.

Jaeger cautiously looked up, dreading what was about to come. Still, he tried to give her a smile. "Hey, um, Elena," he greeted uncertainly.

"Are we still going to the dance tonight?" she asked coyly, gripping her purse strap for support. A light smile ran across her lips and she moved a piece of hair away from her face.

His sigh caused her smile to drop. Immediately, her stomach dropped, and a feeling of untamable fear danced in her chest.

"Listen," he closed the book regretfully, "Last night, I had a fight with my mom and she pissed me off." He averted his eyes from her heartrending ones. "Bottom line is," he said quietly, "she's making me take Emily Santos to the dance because her mother's best friends with mine and….yeah…" he trailed off.

Everything came crashing down. Her pole of sanity and self-control had toppled off a tower. Elena felt her world collapse on top of her and all of a sudden, everything just seemed blurry.

"…Oh…" she breathed, eyes burning so much. Her muzzle started to turn red and this caused Jaeger to look up at her. "You're taking Emily?"

He didn't know what else to say but, "Yeah."

"Ok," she nodded. Elena began to back away, eyes frenzying over the floor. "Ok," she repeated in a whisper.

"Elena I-" he tried to explain but before he had the chance, she was gone. Jaeger was left there, silently cursing.

Speeding down the hallway, she needed to get away. She needed to get out. There has to be somewhere she could cry alone. All this pressure had suddenly been installed in her broken heart, and she needed to cry before the dejected organ exploded. Elena attracted the stares of the few people in the hallway. She did not care if the bell rang, making her tardy.

She needed to cry.

Following her feet, she ended up in the nearest bathroom. Whimpering, she was about to lock herself in the stall and release her thunderstorm but halted in her place. In front of her were Sarah and her group of friends. Insecurity filled her very being, only adding to the tension in her chest. Her frail body withered beneath their taunting stares. Elena could no longer hold back the tears, and water fell down her cheeks.

"Aww, look. The little tramp's crying," Sarah laughed, "She must've seen the video."

Her heart stopped.

"What video?"

"You haven't seen it?" one of the other girls asked scrutinizing the poor girl. "It's had four hundred views last time I checked."

Elena's ear pinned against her head. "W-what video?" she asked again with less confidence than she has ever had.

Sarah merely chuckled. "Just wait till you see it." She walked up to the trembling hedgehog and whispered in her closed ear, "It's hysterical."

The group of girls laughed as they called her nasty names before leaving. Elena was left standing there, clutching her bag in fear.

How did everything fall so quickly?

Running through the streets as fast as her little legs could take her took a lot out of the girl. Tears streaked her face as she slammed the door open, locking it behind her. Elena stormed into her room and closed the door. Without hesitation, she dropped her bag and took her laptop. With it being already on, she clicked to log in to her FaceBook account. When her newsfeed page was refreshed, she saw a video titled "Dirty Little Whore". Visibly stunned and horrified, despite the voice in her head, she clicked on the video and watched in teary silence.

On the screen played an ebony hedgehog that had a picture of her face on her head. She had on a tight, short dress that covered a fake baby bump. Elena gasped, appalled, but nevertheless, continued to watch.

"Hi I'm Elena," the fake Elena said, "I'm a dirty little slut whose lost her virginity at eleven." She flicked her hair and rubbed her belly. "I've had sex over five times with men twice my age. I really like grown men. Especially men that look like my dad because he's so handsome," she laughed. Then the camera zoomed in. Slowly the phony enunciated, "I act like I'm the holiest girl in school, but I'm really the dirtiest little whore." After that, the screen went blank and back to the home screen, leaving Elena with wide eyes.

Soon enough she broke down. Her eyes looked around and she grabbed a pillow, releasing her pain in it. Everything in that video, every line in that video were things she said to Sarah. It couldn't have been more obvious. She had indeed lost her virginity at eleven, due to her father, and this had happened over five times. Elena did not have the guts to tell her brothers, but she had mistakably told Sarah, a girl who had exposed her secrets. After trusting her to keep them, and trusting her to console her, she made a mockery out the little hedgehog. She spread rumors, twisting the truth to only degrade her of her status; a status she had lost the moment Sarah began to hate her.

Terrible sobs ripped through her throat, tearing it raw, Elena hiccupped, gasped and coughed into her pillow, realizing the horrid truth. As everything came crashing down on her, only then, had she realized the true extent of her misery. Every hurtful word the pretty mongoose said to her had finally reached her ears. The dirty looks her peers gave her had finally been seen. Each blow to her fragile body and undignified name her father had called her landed on her head heavily. The looks of pure disappointment Shadow and Mephiles gave her yesterday took its toll. And Jaeger's pitying glances had knocked her out of the park.

The gears in her head that functioned in her body stopped turning. The squeaked with horrid sounds, signaling they were tired. Tired of working for such a failure of a soul. Tired of working to let her stay alive. Tired of working to let her breathe. If no one wanted her around, why was she still here? The hope she hopelessly clung onto was false. Her whole life was false. All the things she went through was clearly a sign. A sign for her to leave.

She was not wanted in this world, why live in it?

Hot breathes forcefully left her bruised body. Elena stared soullessly at her laptop. She got up and paced about the room, breathlessly crying. She stood near the door and banged her head against it. She slammed her fist against the wood, sobbing her heart out.

Why did was she so useless?

Her hands gripped the railing of her bed and she leaned over it, crying. She gasped for air, all the negatives of her life flashing before her eyes. Her life in general was just horrible.

No. No, she couldn't do this. No more. The pain and torture was just too much for her naïve mind and little body. All the hope and happiness was no match for the misery she was put through. Her life did not matter. When she was gone, her brothers would be there to console each other. People at school wouldn't notice the ghost of a girl was absent. She would no longer burden anyone with her simple but utterly inadequate life. In the end, there was just no solution other than one.

Death.

Lighting up the dark screen was a notification.

These stupid social medias pop-ups was exactly the reason why Mephiles rarely even participated in them. But somehow, he was played into getting a Facebook account and every five freaking minutes there was a notification. Muttering angrily to himself, he pulled out his phone. He was definitely not in the mood. After staying up all night, knowing he was reason his little sister was crying all night, served him no justice in the morning. Although punishing her was the right way to go, Mephiles questioned whether he raised his voice a bit too high.

"I am tired of your disrespectful attitude, Elena! I don't want to see your face until tomorrow morning!"

He couldn't help but think he had gone off a bit too harsh. The indigo striped hedgehog could not help it. He had developed a softer spot for her overtime than Shadow had. Of course the other ebony male thought she deserved every word, but Mephiles felt she needed someone to spoil her seeing as she never had a true parent for a very long time.

His thumb ran across the screen, unlocking the phone. He was directed to the home screen of the social media and raised his brows in surprise. Elena had posted something. He glanced at the time. Wasn't she still supposed to be at school? Last time he checked, he had taken her phone away from her.

Curious, he looked at her post to find it was a four minute video. He played it.

There sat a vulnerable little girl, whose mascara dripped down her face. Tears violently strolled down her cheeks and tiny gasped escaped her lips. Elena gripped her bed railing with all her might before sighing, tiredly.

What the hell?

"Hi everyone," she started numbly."

Goosebumps spread all over the hedgehog's body and Mephiles did not realize how tightly he squeezed the phone.

"I'm Elena the Hedgehog," she paused chocking back a sob, "I don't know why everyone hates me so much, but I guess I do, because now, I hate me too."

His eyes widened.

"Looking back, I guess I can see why though. Everything I do just causes stress for others. I mean, everything in that video was true."

What video?

"But right now, I don't see why I'm even here. My friends have turned against me. People I love want nothing to do with me," she put a hand on her mouth as she sobbed, "m-my own brothers hate me…" Elena gasped harshly. "It's just sad that only now I see that I shouldn't be here, talking, walking, or breathing."

W-what?

"So I guess that's it," she said with a smile. One that broke the very heart of Mephiles the Hedgehog.

"Goodbye."

There were no words that could express what he felt at the very moment. All he knew was there was only a small chance that if he got to the house in time, Elena would still be alive.

And that thought terrified him so much.

On wit, Mephiles called the home phone, praying with all his being she would answer. He jumped from his seated position, ignoring the questions his co-workers asked and left the premises. He ran to his car, starting it. "Pick up the phone, Elena. Pick up the phone Elena," he shouted repeatedly, backing out of the parking lot.

"Pick up the damn phone!"

The rings of the house phone blared about the house. Elena slid down to the floor, on her knees and cried harder. She gripped the bed railing, her body shaking. Her room had been trashed from her sudden anger rush. All around her, items had been carelessly ripped and thrown about the room.

Shadow's phone boomed loudly attracting attention from the quiet conference. He blinked, blushing in embarrassment. Mumbling and apology, he hurried out the room slamming his thumb on the answer button.

"What do you want?" he hissed at the phone.

"Shadow, it's Mephiles. Something'swrongwithElenaandIthink-"

Shadow's eyes widened. He has never heard him so frantic before. He sounded as if he were on the verge of tears "You idiot, slow down. Speak English, for God's sake."

"Hurry and get to the house," he barked, "Elena's trying to kill herself." There he ended the conversation.

The ebony hedgehog dropped his phone. He bolted for his keys, running out of the building, pushing past people.

This had to be a trick. Elena? Killing herself? This couldn't be true. She would never do that. She knows what'll happen to them if they do. The two brothers would fall apart. What could of caused her so much pain to result to such a solution. Was it because of last night?

"If I find you dead…" he warned trailing off. His crimson orbs were once again lit aflame with a similar fire as last night's.

This one was angry, bitter, and downright terrified.

Shadow was the first one to get to the house. He ran out of his car, throwing down his keys once he was in the counter. Form outside, he could hear the sirens of police and the ambulance.

Mephiles must've called them.

"Elena," he bellowed. He looked around with a racing heart. "Elena!" he shouted again. After scurrying around the first floor, he went up the stairs angrily calling out her name.

"Elena, where the hell are you!"

Once he got to the top floor, he searched in room finding it trashed and empty, missing the hedgehog he was looking for. Immediately, thoughts sunk in his head. Tears stung his eyes as he thought of the worst.

She's dead. The voice in his head taunted. You were too late. It was all your fault. Her body is probably on the floor, cold and lifeless.

No! It couldn't be true! She couldn't be dead and he knew it. Shadow became frantic. "Elena," he screamed, voice cracking. Once he walked across the empty hallway he heard strained grunts come from behind the bathroom door.

Mephiles arrived a couple seconds after the paramedics. He pushed his way past the professionals, shouting, "Elena!"

His heart pumped harshly within his aching chest as he immediately ran up the stairs.

"Elena!" he yelled, tears threatening to fall.

Shadow took no time to open the door to see the trembling girl struggling to open a capsule of pills. Her make ran down her face as her cheeks were red from frustration.

"I can't get the stupid cap off," she grunted.

Before anyone could predict what happened next, Shadow lunged towards her, grabbing for the bottle of pills. "No!" Elena screamed, struggling to take the pills back. His fingernails dug into hers fighting for the bottle. "Let go of the damn bottle!" he shouted as he tried to tug it from her grip. She would not budge and for a moment, Shadow was surprised at her strength.

"No, give it back!"

"Dammit Elena!"

They both slammed into the walls, neither one of them wanting to let go. It wasn't until the sheer force caused the cap to open making all the red pills fall out that everything went silent.

Elena gaped at the pills. Her only way of dying had just been ruined. That bastard!

"NOOOO!" she screamed at the floor.

Glaring murderously at her older sibling, Elena backed him into a wall. For some reason, the crazy stare she gave him caused the seventeen-year old to stand there. He had only realized he was petrified. When his head hit the wall his eyes widened. Something was going to come out of his mouth but only a strained sound hung there.

"LOOK WHAT YOU DID!"

It was only then that Mephiles had appeared. He went straight for Elena and took her into his arms. Shadow stared straight forward, his sister's cries becoming blurry. Hot tears cascaded down his cheeks and Shadow finally grasped the fact that Elena had really tried to kill herself.

Why?

"I wanna die," she shrieked. Mephiles shook his head, pulling her against him despite her squirms. "No," he whispered.

"I wanna die," she screeched. They both fell to the floor. Elena swung back, her head laying against his chest fur. She blankly stared at the floor, bawling, and whimpering. Her dull orange irises lost their life as her muzzle paled from dehydration.

"Please," Shadow whispered, his eyes gazing sadly over her shaking body.

"I wanna die," she mumbled again, "Please let me die."

Mephiles smoothed his hand over her forehead, shedding tears of his own. "No, beautiful," he mumbled in her hair. He buried his muzzle in her shoulder wanting to smell her scent to reassure himself she was still here.

For any later, and she could've been dead.
