I smiled elegantly at everyone we passed as I followed Lesus through the near labyrinth of hallways and corridors in the Holy Temple. I also ignored their apparent shock which might have been accounted for by the fact that this had been the first time anyone had seen me since 'that day'. Or that I was following the Judgment knight, who I presumed to have been beyond busy since then. Or both.
Wherever he was taking me was obviously somewhere on the other side of the building, which meant I had to smile at countless amounts of people who would only stare blankly back at me.
We arrived at one of the more secluded prayer rooms, and he turned to me. After checking to make sure the corridor was empty, he said, "We haven't messed with it yet, so you leave it alone too." With that, he opened the door.
…You don't actually expect that of me, right?
Inside, everything had been pushed to the sides of the room, except for one table, which was currently in the center of the room. There was something on it, but without my elemental vision I couldn't make out what it was from the doorway. I entered the room silently, neither agreeing nor disagreeing with the rule, followed by Lesus who closed the door behind him.
I went to the table to get a better view of what was on it. There was only one thing, and it was relatively small considering the size of the crater it had made. The floor of the training grounds was mostly dirt, but it had been made nearly rock solid through generations of abuse.
Whatever it is, it seems undamaged. I wonder how much it'd sell for… Ahem, I mean I wonder what it's for.
Rectangle and black, this thing had a smaller rectangle on either side. The smaller rectangles were made of a different material than the shiny black of the rest of it, and were fuzzy black instead.
How boring! Aren't things that fall out of the sky supposed to be more attention catching, and perhaps a bit less gloomy? Like an expensive looking jewel encrusted sword, maybe. And no wonder they moved the furniture; no one would have noticed it otherwise!
Before I completely lost interest, however, some small white writing along the very bottom caught my eye. Peering closer, I saw that I had almost overlooked a row of seven small circles. Each circle had some sort of white symbol or shape above it. From left to right they were: a triangle, two vertical lines, a square, a vertical line then two triangles, two triangles then a vertical line, a plus sign, and a minus sign.
I glanced at Lesus. Those circles were just begging to be poked, and it's not like the world would suddenly end if I touched the thing, right? I mean, they had to have touched it before, in order to get it in here in the first place.
Seeming to notice my suspicious behavior, he shifted closer, suspecting trickery on my part.
Which he was completely correct about.
Before Judge could inch so close that his inhuman speed could stop me, my hand darted out and I pressed the circle with the triangle above it. Why the triangle? Because I felt like it, that's why.
I quickly recoiled my hand, and then held my breath as I waited for something to happen. Of course I was only to be let down.
For about three seconds, which was just long enough for me to start worrying about what Judge was going to do.
Then there was a sound, with a loudness somewhere between that of a sizable explosion, and what you would hear if you were standing next to a lightning strike. Either would leave your ears ringing, if you weren't already deaf.
The difference between those sounds and this one was that it didn't stop after a moment, it kept going and going. My hands slapped to my ears.
I just got my vision back; I am not going to lose my hearing over some piece of junk that fell from the sky!
Now kind of muffled, I began to notice a slight pattern in the frequency of the sound, going higher and lower at intervals, almost like…
"Get it to stop!" Lesus shouted over the noise.
"I don't know how! If I had, I would have done it already!" my voice mixed with the noise in a strange harmony as I tried to be heard.
A song! That's what it was, a really, really loud song.
Lesus, hands over ears, came over to where I was standing. Removing one of his hands, he pressed the second circle, the one with the two vertical lines above it. There was no way he could have seen which of the circles I had pressed, stupid tapeworm.
That's all it took? Why can't all my other problems be solved this easily?
The music instantly stopped and I cautiously lowered my hands. My ears rang with the sudden silence, which severely impaired the small amount of hearing I had left at the moment.
Judge didn't seem to have that problem though, because I saw his head jerk towards the door as if he'd heard something.
First looking sternly at me, he opened his mouth as if he were about to say something. Then he closed his mouth and looked at the door again. Coming to a decision, his black cloak spread out behind him as he strode to the door and stood beside it, on the side with the handle.
Not two seconds later, the door flew open with a bang, the mess of red hair that rushed through it the obvious cause.
"Sun! What was that just now? You have to…" I stopped listening to Blaze's shouts when he started trying to tell me what to do. Ignoring people really was starting to become a habit lately.
Judge, who had been completely prepared for this, immediately closed the door as Blaze rushed to my side, but not so fast that I couldn't see the mass of holy knights already gathered outside try to follow Blaze through the door.
I returned my attention to Blaze. "…doesn't it? I was in the bathroom when I nearly-"
The nearest bathroom is three hallways over! Just how fast were you trying to get here?
"-had my ears blown out by what sounded like really loud music, coming from over here. It was music, right? That means that thing does something that makes music-" Having calmed down a bit, he was no longer full out shouting, but he continued talking almost too fast to understand.
"Blaze." Is it just me, or has Lesus also recently grown a habit of interrupting people? Our habits are developing together.
"Hmm, what?" Almost dismissively, Blaze stopped his chatter and replied to Judge. After all, what could be more important than talking my ear off?
"You forgot to zip your pants."
A/N: I'm so sorry it took so long to write this. Here's what happened:
LONG VERSION: I spent two weeks being lazy, then began thinking and couldn't come up with anything for two more weeks. I finally got an idea, but I also got writer's block stuck on that for another month. Then I wrote this entire chapter one night on a burst of inspiration, and the rest of the time it has been in processing through various drafts.
SHORT VERSION: I was lazy.
I'm very sorry (bows).
Also, thank you very much everyone who left reviews. They not only give motivation to keep writing this, but sometimes they give me ideas of things to write in the first place.
