The Sorting seemed to take forever. I didn't pay much attention to the rest of it though, Marlene was too loud. I could only tell it was over when an energized silence fell over the hall. Heads turned to look at where the Sorting had taken place, and I followed their gaze. My eyes caught on a tall old man standing in front of the chair. He was much too old to be sorted. For some reason, I felt a prick at the back of my neck, as if I had met him.
"Welcome, students!" His voice boomed across the room, "As you may know, I am Albus Dumbledore, and I would like to welcome all of the First-Years to our wonderful school." There was a round of applause. After some announcements of general rules, he announced the feast. He raised his arms, and there was a collective gasp as the tables filled with food. It was more rations than I had ever seen. There were foods I had only dreamed about. As my tablemates started digging in, I couldn't help but sit there in wonder.
A boy noticed me not eating and glanced at me funny. I didn't pay him attention until he took my plate and piled some foods on there. "They're good," He said with a grin, placing it back in front of me, "These ones won't kill you." He continued on his own pile.
"Thank you," I stuttered, starting on what appeared to be some sort of potatoes. They were delicious.
"Will," he said, reaching a hand across the table. I placed mine in his and was astounded by how much bigger his hand was than mine. He must have been used to it, because while I was distracted, he seemed to shake my whole arm, "I'm a Muggleborn, and I volunteered at the Abnegation camp near me, so I see where you're coming from."
Once we were done, the older kids from Slytherin seemed to keep grinning to each other, looking for some sort of cue. They must have gotten it, because they all stood up at once and ran out of the door, yelling. Will and I stood up too and ran as fast as we could behind them. We almost got lost a few times, and we got torn off by one of those moving staircases, but luckily we always had someone who knew the way with us. My tummy ached from being full and exercising. I liked the feeling. I couldn't remember the last time I had been full or out of breath.
We slowed, because we had finally caught up with everyone. I stood on my toes, but the crowd was too tall, I couldn't see anything. Someone grabbed me from behind and tossed me in the air. I somehow ended up screaming and holding onto Uriah's face. He peeled my fingers out of his eyes, and I realized that he had only boosted me onto his shoulders so I could see. I felt a blush heating my cheeks.
They were all standing in front of a wall. The crowd silenced as Zeke held up a hand.
"The password this year is," Zeke pointedly pronounced each word, "Gryffindor Sucks!" The crowd whooped and hollered as the wall slid back. I couldn't get a good view despite my height, because we all started forward. I crawled down Uriah's neck, but latched onto his back like a monkey as the crowd charged forward.
Through the wall, there was a room. It was large, and grand, like one of those large buildings that I imagined the kings lived in the bible. Uriah finally let me down, and I walked around the room, running my hand across the cool marble walls. I think my favorite part was the fireplace. We had a fireplace back home, and it was the first thing I saw that reminded me of home.
When I finally came around back to the group, Zeke and Four were chatting between two large staircases. The group had dwindled down a lot, and there were only kids my age around.
"Alright Firsties," Zeke crossed his arms and grinned big, just like Uriah, "These are the Dormitories. One is for the ladies, and one is for the gents. Would anyone care to test and see which is which?" There were some whistles, but no response. Everyone was lined up, and some larger awkward kid was shoved forward, like how penguins test the waters. I looked at Four and he frowned.
"How 'bout you Peter," Four spoke, reaching past the sacrifice and pulling on the tall boy who I'd had troubles with on the bus. "You like shoving people around?" He said quietly, nose level with the boy. He didn't respond. "Well how bout you run up that staircase right there." Four directed, pointing at the right one.
It was a strange request, and the boy gave him a look, but shrugged and did it. The staircase spiraled upwards quickly, so he was out of my sight in a second. After a few seconds, there was a rumble, and a shout. The boy slid back down the stairs backwards. Four grinned and kicked him to the side.
Uriah laughed, "That is the ladies dorm, and that is what happens when you try and sneak into the ladies dorm. The boys does not do the same, but if you get it on as twelve year olds, that's pretty gross." He turned and walked up the stairs, and the rest of the boys started to follow. Peter was still in a pile in front of the ladies stairs, so we all stepped over him.
We had no idea where to go at first, but once we got to the first floor, we realized that the doors had names on them in chalk. I was placed with Marlene, Lynn, and a girl named Christina.
My little bag was already on one of the beds. Next to my bed were some very large packages as well. There was a note on top of them.
Have a great year Beatrice. ~ Dumbledore
The door burst open behind me, and I heard Marlene's screaming. I couldn't distinguish what she was saying at first, but a girl tackled her from behind, and they ended up in a heap on the floor. The two devolved to laughing, and I finally made out that she was yelling about being roommates.
When she got herself together, Marlene hugged me, then hugged the other girl again. "Tris, this is Lynn, we grew up together! Lynn, this is Tris, she's cool." Lynn smiled at me, and I realized that she was incredibly gorgeous. Another girl entered the room, and I realized that I was the only unattractive one there. Great.
Marlene and the new girl, who must have been Christine, were extremely talkative. Christine grew up in the magical world like Marlene, so they were talking about some Quidditch team. I still had no idea what that was, but knew it was a Wizard sport.
I was exhausted, and as I started getting ready for bed, the girls did too. They were very kind, and didn't mention my gray clothes once. I liked them already.
Sleep took me as my terror for the next day's classes subsided.
