There was a small window of time where everyone was distracted by the fact that James was finally prepared to ask Lily to marry him. They were happy and it was peaceful until James and Sirius were called into the Ministry to do auror work, leaving Peter alone with Remus in the flat. The two of them stayed up late worrying about the other boys, Peter was glad to finally be alone with Remus. Peter started sleeping in Remus' room to help him with the nightmares that had always been there but had gotten much worse since he came back from the mission Dumbledore had given him.
"No…stop…I'm not a monster…please," Peter heard, he slid closer to Remus whispering the werewolf's name in hopes that he would wake up easily.
Peter leaned closer to the thrashing boy saying, "C'mon Rem, it's okay, you're just dreaming. Please Rem wake up." He reached over and gently grabbed the boy's shoulder in hopes of bringing him back into reality.
"No!" Remus yelled causing Peter to pull Remus closer into his chest. Trying to comfort the sleeping boy. The movement must have jostled Remus in just the right way, because the next second he was sitting up, breathing rapidly.
Peter moved so he was sitting in front of Remus, making sure the other man knew where he was. It barely took a moment for Remus to register Peter sitting in front of him and when he did he collapsed into Peter. Remus was gasping for air like a drowning man while Peter rubbed his back, trying to ground him.
Remus shuddered in Peter's arms while Peter quietly whispered, "Hey Moon's your okay, I've got you. You're not alone."
After a moment Peter grasped Remus' wrist, gently resting the sobbing man's hand on his chest.
"Rem I need you to breathe with me," Peter said and Remus shook his head, "C'mon Remmy you're strong you can do it, just follow me. In…one…two…three…four...out…one…two…three…four, good job, do you think you can do it again? You can do it Moons, In…one…two…three…four…out…one…two…three…four."
Eventually, Peter got Remus calmed down enough to fall back asleep. He pulled the sleeping boy into his chest feeling the way he breathed.
It had been three hours since Remus and Peter had finally dragged themselves from bed. Remus was determined to do something productive today, claiming that now was the ideal time because his Sirius-sized distraction wasn't there. Peter had been called to St. Mungos for his internship.
When he arrived at the hospital Mira was waiting for him, rushing him into a different room saying something about there being an attack and that the hospital needed all hands on deck. The first thing Peter saw once he crossed the threshold of the door was blood, the first thing he heard was screaming. Mira didn't give him time to take in the scene as she grabbed his arm and dragged Peter to a different bed and Peter recognized the person laying there. It was a face he wasn't sure he'd ever see again. It was Snivellus.
