Death No. 2
"I can't eat and I can't sleep. I'm not doing well in terms of being a functional human, you know?"

"That's the fourth case this week, what do you suppose we do boss?" I turned my eyes to the ever-stoic British man. He took another sip of his Earl Gray tea and turned around, his eyes glancing over to me as he did so.
"I suppose it would be best to get as much information as possible from the victims friends and family." He nodded once to himself before picking up a lone pen. "Perhaps it will help lead us to the end of the other cases, they all seem to add up one way or another." I rolled my eyes and handed him a sheet of paper, he'd want every single detail there is at the crime scene before leaving his comfy chair.
"And I guess you want me to get as much info as possible?" He sent me a smile and a keen nod.
"Why of course my dear, why would I send out the others if it's no big deal? That's a waste of men and women isn't it?" I sighed and he pushed the pen and paper back over to me along with a headpiece. Sighed but nodded in irritation, if he wasn't the boss I would have already began to tell him how stupid this w as. What if this just so happened to be our suspect? Then what, let me die? I sucked up my pride and simply gave him the answer he wanted.
"Yes, it is a waste. When do you want me to depart?" The necromancer stood up slowly and completely turned to me, he pushed vibrant blond hair away from his olive eyes in pure excitement.
"Tonight. I wish you luck, human, I'm sure you'll need it." There he goes again, acting like I can't hold my own in the group of theirs, I'm not stupid nor am I unable to do so, I've killed a many in my days work. "Go on now, I give you a weeks time yes?" I nodded begrudgingly and walked near the large double doors of his Victorian themed office. It was more like a down toned historic library if you asked me. Dust clotted all over the place, the tortoise himself rolling in it everyday, old geezer.
"Alright, I'll be seeing you then." I called out softly, Kirkland didn't like it when we yelled and I could see why, his grandpa ears probably couldn't handle it. I shut the doors gently and began my long walk down the hall of mirrors. It was a pristine well kept hall decorated in the mirrors of the ages, many of them Kirkland had stolen in his golden days from plagued Europe up until the early 20th century. How the big dogs never charged him was beyond me but that didn't matter. What matters is getting a solid seat amongst the greatest even if one of them was a complete asshole and the other two were distant and rather odd in a sense. But, the title came with money, a place to sleep, and bow down respect, which was nice.
Immortality was part of the deal as well. I mean who would want the greatest to simply die of old age when they could easily stay around to keep shit in check? Makes lots of sense in my opinion.
I sighed away the petty thoughts, it was best if I kept my head in a positive light when dealing with this type of stuff, one wrong move and I could ruin my chances which would buck me right back down to errand girl, gah.
I gripped tightly to my back pack filled with everything I'd need on this simple snoop mission and the paper and pencil Kirkland had handed me mere minutes ago. I walked passed a few other lowerclassmen and a few of the top dogs, paying my respects to them equally. One of the very distant of the two whom I spoke of early nodded in my direction, he wasn't much of an ass when he didn't speak but he was rather odd when he did, speaking only in rhythm mixed with a dash of sarcasm. I'd heard that he'd been around much longer then Kirkland which was pretty damn old, but he didn't look a day over twenty five. He also didn't seem to care either way if I joined them or not. His haunting blue eyes stared intensely into my own which scared the living daylights out of me but they weren't nearly as freaky as —"GAH!"
"—Where are you going (f/n)? Did Arty send you on another mission?" I gasped loudly and took a few steps back. Deep red eyes looking into my own (e/c) ones like a spider on its pray. He might as well have been one; always hanging around like some kind of arachnid but he meant no harm.
"Y-yeah.." I murmured out before gripping my bag tighter, it wasn't out of fear just to keep me from saying anything that best be kept shut. "I've got to keep going…" He jumped down to his two feet before bowing lowly.
"Lukas and I wanted to wish you great luck on your task at hand!" He sent me an open mouth smile letting me see his one fang, the other cut down after he decided to become a leashed vampire rather than a rouge one. I waved and smiled back before looking over to Bondevik whom at this point was blushing deep red, he was never one for encouragement like his other rather eccentric colleges.
"Thanks Popescu, I'll keep that in mind." I nodded to the both of them before walking out of headquarters. An institute that runs on supernatural guidance that takes down supernatural occurrences, comical. I don't think another human being had worked around these parts in some time but I was one of a kind. I suppose that may be just the reason why I'm even able to stand up to par with these beings, simply because I was different in a since, but then again, I was only—
"—HUMAN!" I turned around to see a group of phantoms busy fixing up a few automobiles in need of some upgrades. I was about to give them the lashing of a lifetime, I hated that term but what they said next surprised me. "Good luck out there, we're rooting for ya'." My face was flushed red; even the tricksters were rooting for me! That had to have meant something was in favor for me. "Make that geezer wet his loin cloth! We don't wanna lose the one person to outdo him!"
"Of course! They don't call me the demon huntress of 1,000 for nothing after all!" I saluted them off before speeding my way out of hunter's territory and into the unknown, something was telling me that this mission was going to be as Kirkland would say, 'jolly good fun.'
—
It's like clockworks Lili, just be sure to pull left then right and I'm sure it will progress perfectly. I could hear my brothers voice echo through my ears as I tried to work out the kinks in the clock tower. It was acting up again and the towns priest wanted me to take a look at it. I pushed the lever back and forth like he'd taught me all those years ago but….I didn't think I could do it. Every time I used his tools or even cleaned them yet another memory would appear before me. I didn't know how much of this I could honestly take.
"My child? Have you completed the clock yet?" The kind priest snapped me out of my dark thoughts. His bolding head catching my eye immediately. "Is something the matter?" I could hear the worry in his voice, I didn't want him to fret about some girl but I didn't know how to respond without sounding upset. My feelings were beginning to over whelm me yet again.
"Is it about Vash again?" That was it; I was at my breaking point. I dropped the screwdriver that was tightly wound in my hands before wrapping my hands around my body in angst. I heard footsteps coming towards me quickly. "Lili! Are you alright!?" I turned my vacant eyes to pastor John, his gray eyes sensing my unhappiness as he pulled me into a warm embrace, ceasing most if not all of the past regards on my brother.
"Yes…" I whispered out from under my arm. "Forgive me, I cannot let go of the past." Pastor John didn't say anything in response but I knew he'd heard me; it was true. I couldn't let it go, it was my burden to carry on the damnation that had taken me thus far, I didn't want to live like this. I didn't know how much more of this I could take. Even with the help around me, the church, the town's people, and most importantly, pastor John. They did so much for me but…but I couldn't repay them…I was just a burden on them these good folk didn't deserve this.. they didn't need this…they were too pure.
"It's hard to let go but it's harder to move on my child. You may spend as much time as you need in the monastery, you are always welcome." I felt a soft pat on my back before the pressure from the warm hug was gone, I was alone yet again. "I'll leave you time to think." The door was shut and all that I could hear was the pacing of the large clock tower. It brought back more haunting memories; my brother's kind identical green eyes stared deeply into the sun as it set, another day coming to an end.
"Back and forth back and forth, isn't it was pretty sound Lili?" His blond hair hitting the sides of his face, short sleeved shirt dancing against the wind. He inhaled the relaxing cool salty waters from below; we'd spent the day fixing the town's clock tower.
"Yes big brother! I love the way the wind hits my face." I sent my brothers back side a warm smile, my own hair hitting the sides of my face softly.
"I know, its like a free reward after a hard days work, don't you agree?" I loved my brother, but his love for free things exceeded even that which is very comical if you were to ask me, but also a serious matter in his eyes.
"I do! I do!" I heard a deep chuckle resound from him calming my senses almost immediately only his proud filled laughs could calm me down, I was always so jittery without them. I listened as the waves crashed below the cliff side where we worked; it was so very calming as if we were sailing out to sea.
I miss you Vash
Yet another day has come and gone marking almost a year since his…his…. since his well deserved vacation, thankfully it was free.
I grinned to myself as I thought about it. Since that day, that day so many months ago, I haven't been able to do anything, nothing at all. I get up, go to work, pray, and sleep. I'm only twelve years old and I don't remember how to have fun, how to live, how to ….how to be human, I couldn't even do that, I don't know how to function without someone. How sad.
I sighed and lay in my bed for a bit, the warmth from my sheet bringing me temporary happiness. "Is this what it feels like to be happy again?" I ask to myself before drifting off into a distant land of false security. "No, I'm lying to myself. Happiness is and will always be with big brother." I give myself one more day being unhappy. Just one more.
I think….I think I'm ready to go on vacation too…
—
"Ok, so you said it was an isolated town?" I paused to let Kirkland speak up again from the small headpiece.
"Yes, yes, it's small and by a large body of water." I sighed and looked over to the ocean that stretched out for miles and miles, I guess this counts.
"And….it's isolated." I heard an irritable 'yes' from the other line before it went dead. "Bitchy much? Someone hasn't had their morning cup of tea." I giggled to myself before walking down to the small fishing town, full of wide-awake fishermen and their families. They looked so happy.
"Perhaps I'll buy a cute house when I get in." I was almost positive I'd make it into the top five after this mission, it was a piece of cake, and all I had to do was deal with one girl—
"OAF!" I looked to my side to see a small girl, maybe twelve or thirteen. She had short blond hair with adoring purple bows on both sides. Large doe like green eyes and a small frown on her face, she looked beyond frightened. "Es tut mir leid!" She cried out in what sounded like German. "I wasn't looking where I was going outsider!" How kind, the term outsider is now in my top most hated words, just peachy.
"It's fine girl," I was in a bad mood now. "Is this the town of Hu—"
"Lili! Are you ok? I don't want you wandering off without someone with you." We both looked over to see a middle aged man whom was balding, a firm line was creased against his face. Was this her father? "I see you've brought a friend." His dry lips uplifted as he made eye contact with me. "Welcome stranger, to our quant town of fishers!" He cried out happily before outstretching his hands to the town down below.
"Yes, hello, I shouldn't be in your hair for too long but thanks for the great hospitality." I pushed passed the kind man before walking into town, many of the people seemed very distant as soon as they lay eyes on me. Not very awesome to outsiders I see, whatever, I had no business with them, I only needed to find the girl Kirkland wanted me to investigate. A tall brunette with lively green eyes and beauty that matched no other; her spirit broke all bounds and she had the vigor of a mother tigress. Most of the people in this town were either blond and blue eyed or blond with green eyes but no brunettes as far as I could tell, odd.
I walked passed the people that seemed to tremble when I looked towards them or murmur simple nothings in German to which I simply brushed off as crazy nonsense. As I made it further and further away from the seaside town I made it to a large clock tower, it was mostly wood, it had bronze trimmings and what looked like it had four faces, each with a different demonstration of time. It was a masterpiece in itself as it stood tall on the edge of the village on a cliff. It stood as the tallest building in the town as if glowering down at everything else, it had an unearthly feel about it.
"Something supernatural is amidst that clock tower." I spoke to myself before walking towards it, something was trying to keep me away from it but to my better judgment I decided to walk to it. Climb its centuries old steps worn down with age and feel its splinter-ridden railing. I ignored the signs and the winds that told me to turn away, I was attracted to it, its haunting beauty, and the largeness of it; thus, I continued to climb. Up and higher and up and higher until making it to the top, an over arching doorway open yet closed to the world, the salt filled wind hitting my nose harder the higher up I was, calming me yet again. My eyes were closed as I walked in, the constant pulsing of the giant wind clock, the ticking and the toking causing my form to shake slightly but I continued to ignore it. The wood below my feet shuddering as yet another wind flew through me, I felt like I was at peace.
I gripped my arm once again, my backpack strung tightly against my back as I opened my eyes again, this time, the girl from earlier was situated at the edge of the tower where it opened up to the rest of the world, what was she doing? I hid further behind one of the many large pillars keeping us up.
"Big brother…? Is it ok if I go on vacation too?" She called out to nothing, only the harsh winds answering her call. "When I get there, will you be waiting?" She asked with a prayer. "Of course you will….I've made you wait long enough." She removed the jean jacket that kept her warm from the early spring weather, she was relaxed as if she was meant to do this, like she had done this many times before. She let it drop into the crashing waters before saying another prayer.
I knew this was against my job and I was suppose to let mortals live how they want to live but this girl…this young girl…was about to make a mistake, she looked as though she had so much to live for, I couldn't just let her die. As she was beginning to walk forward I moved from my hiding place and ran towards her to which she began to speed up.
"What are you doing?" I called out, she turned around and stared into my eyes, a non-existent look in them, she didn't seem to care what I did. There was a haunting smile on her face, as though she'd already made her decision to let go of the burden of life. It scared me.
"I'm going on vacation." I stared back at her, (e/c) deeming her insane. What the hell does 'I'm going on vacation' mean? "My brother is waiting on me, could you please let me go?" Her voice was strong and unmoving but I could hear the uneasiness in it. I decided to do something crazy.
"Your brother is not down there waiting on you." I let out calmly, the girl began to squirm and kick as I said those words, letting out caged animalistic sounds of anguish and torture. It was her feelings that were speaking for her.
"Let me go! You don't know what you're talking about!" She screeched out loudly, birds began to fly away from the scene in fear but I only tightened my hold on the young child. "You bitch! Let me go! I need to go before it's too late….before…..he leaves me again…" She began to calm down before crying out again, this time a barrage of tears rolled down her face.
"He's not going to leave you. It's not time for your vacation yet." She was too young to just leave; she didn't need vacation time yet, not yet.
"But big brother…I…." It was silent before I spoke up again, positive that she wouldn't make any remarks.
"What do you want? What do you want to do! You best tell me now before I drop you!" I threatened, this time she took a few moments to think before burying her face to my chest in a flurry of tears.
"I….I….I want to live!" She muffled out, tightening her grip to me, tearing into my back flesh but I ignored it. For once, I saved someone from themselves.

"I can't eat and I can't sleep. I'm not doing well in terms of being a functional human, you know?" I nodded at the girl whose name I learned was Lili. Her older brother was killed in a clock tower incident a few months ago and the poor girl hasn't been the same since. I wish I had that kind of love for someone in all honesty. "I'm sorry for any trouble I may have caused you, is there anything I can do for you?" She gave me a small smile as I rose up from my seat.
"Actually, there is one thing if you don't mind me asking." I walked over to the door of her two-room cottage that her and her brother had once shared; it was so quiet in the small home for two.
"Anything I can do in my power." I nodded and handed her a picture of the suspect I was asked to take a look at. The girl seemed to suck in some breath in amazement. "What happened?" I shrugged, all I knew it that the women had incidentally married into a crime and that the bosses up top wanted to interrogate her.
"I have no idea, I was hopping you could point me in the direction of—"
"She lives in the next town over about a days trip on foot." I smiled and bowed; this girl had saved me the trouble of searching any further away from where I was which meant that I was closer to becoming immortalized.
"Thank you so much Lili." She nodded before looking back to the picture at hand. "Do you know her?" The girl nodded before pulling my ear down to her mouth, it surprised me but I just let her do it.
"Be sure to watch your back alright, her husband….he doesn't like being bothered especially by women. I highly suggest leaving them be." I sighed before removing myself from her. It couldn't be that bad but I'd take half of her advice.
"Thanks, I'll be sure to listen to your warning but it's my job to deal with this type of stuff." I pulled my jacket and backpack on, tightening its straps as I did so. The worry in her lime eyes always catching my attention but I continued what I was doing.
"Alright….but would you at least like to stay the night? You can't be serious about leaving in the middle of the night." I chuckled at her before opening the front door, letting the darkness in.
"Of course I'm serious, I always work best in the dark, that's when my prey seem to come out the most. Thank you for everything Lili and I wish you luck on recovery. Remember, being alive is only half the battle, the other half is to actually enjoy it." I didn't bother waiting for her remark as I shut the small cottages door; I had more important things to deal with. My prey was just a few hours away and nothing could stop me from catching it. I watched as the small towns lights began to vanish behind me as the darkness of night embraced me lovingly.
I had vanished.
