Chapter 3
(Flashback) *Hits you over the head with a monkey-wrench*
A car did a spinning halt, the friction from the tires screeching into the air giving off the smell of burnt rubber and dirt. A dust cloud lazily floated up clearing quickly from the oncoming wind that had soon yet to keep up. The car stopped side right in front of a person who was leaning against their own car that was in the middle of a bunch of other cars that were on a cliff side. The wind from the sudden halt pushed the individual's short hair back which didn't receive any response from its owner. The front of the car opened upwards and the driver smirked up the other person, who they nearly made into a pancake.
"What's my time Karma?" The driver asked with devilish smirk.
The person identified as Karma smirked down at the driver and looked down at the stop watch in on its hands. "3 minutes, 23 seconds."
"Alright! New high score!" The guy brought his fists down in victory.
"Don't get all high and mighty just yet Vert, the best time is still 2 minutes 17 seconds." Karma replied with a chuckle. The blonde driver got out of his car and the hood/door closed behind him.
"Yeah I know that but it's still a hell of a lot closer than the what it used to take me to just to get halfway through the track, but now it only takes me less than half that time to do the whole course." Vert scratched the back of his head awkwardly and looked away. "And it's all thanks to you." he said quietly showing the feint blush on his cheeks but the darkness left it unnoticed.
Karma, despite his appearance, was in fact a man but with his fair complexion and thin frame was very often mistaken for a female. Karma had gained the attention of many men pursuers over the years but most of them left him alone when they found out he was the same gender. But there were those who didn't care that he was a guy although rare.
"Damn right it is!" Karma then turned to two other guys standing by their cars chatting. "Hey Nolo!" Karma shouted excitedly which gained the two males attention. "Catch!" he threw the stop watch at the guy standing next to Nolo, the person grabbed it before it hit his face. Nolo glared at Karma before looking at the thrown item. "What're we looking at Karma?" asked Kurt frowning in confusion.
"That my dear Kurt is what your time could be when you actually LISTEN to what I have to say!" said Karma crossing his arms with a scowl on his face. Kurt was impressed as it was an impressive score to finish with, but of course Nolo sneered at the time. "You always finish in less than 4 minutes big deal, that doesn't prove that you know anything about racing" Nolo said brushing off the time and turned away with his arms crossed.
Karma held up a hand.
"Ah, but that's where you're wrong! This isn't my time, its Vert's!" he stated with a pride in his tone and a smug smile on his face. This clearly got Nolo's attention as he quickly spun around.
"What no way!" Kurt called back teasingly with disbelief lacing in his voice as he then proceeded to throw it back to Karma underhanded. This only widened his smug grin as he puffed out his chest. "Yes way! If Vert can shave off 2 minutes off his best, then that proves that I'm good for more than just figuring out opponents strengths and weaknesses!"
Nolo went up to Karma and got leaned in so close that they were only a few centimeters away from each other, kissing distance from one another.
"Your little gossip on the road may be help in practice but there's no way that this amateur-" he gave Vert a look that was pretty close to disgust. "-driver could get that kind of time. No one could improve their racing skill that much, and as the leader of the Teku if I say that it isn't possible then it is. Stick to telling us about our opponent, otherwise zip your lip. Tone did just fine without your pointless blabbering." Tone was a touchy subject for everyone especially Nolo.
"And look at where he is now." Karma replied smoothly and calmly, he was just trying to prove a point. He wanted to prove to Nolo that he knew what he was doing.
"That was because of that stupid metal maniac's fault! He wanted to win so badly he killed Tone!" Nolo barked out.
"I told him he was drifting too far and he didn't listen his arrogance killed him." Karma said in a calm voice trying to prevent the situation from rising even further than it already has, but Karma would go as far as he had to prove himself. He was tired of always being berated and looked down upon by Nolo while everyone else treated him with respect. He was a part of this team for a reason and damn it he was going to show that idiot leader of his one way or another!
Still off to the side Vert was angry that Nolo was ripping on him and never gave him a chance to prove the other wrong, plus having Karma stick up for him while he was right there was completely embarrassing on his part. He loved the guy at some times but he was old and man enough to fight his own battles. Getting ready to deal his damage to Nolo in the same manor Karma held up an arm stopping him. Nolo looked like he was about to explode, his face was turning red in anger and had a few veins in his neck were pulsating.
Karma knew he was trudging on fine ice and electrical wires but there was no other time and place where he could settle this any better, Nolo seemed to forget but Tone's death affected everyone on the team. Not just him. Nolo drew his arm back ready to start throwing fists but thankfully Kurt intervened holding up hands in-between the two Teku to try and defuse the situation.
"Whoa! Nolo, calm down man! Karma doesn't know what he's talking about, he's just looking to show off." Now normally Kurt isn't the kind of guy to say such harsh things but if he didn't say something things could get ugly, real ugly. In fact, he actually kind of liked Karma like most of the drivers did. He was kind of like the nerdy smart one of the group but was just as important as the leader.
like a little play toy you can screw around with until boredom.
Nolo's shoulders went slack after Kurt intervened in-between the two of them.
"Your right…Karma's just attention starved." Nolo agreed with Kurt with a hard expression on his sharp features.
"Alright man, so just keep your cool." Kurt let out a small sigh of relief. Kurt turned and saw Karma's blank face looking at him, although he didn't say anything his eyes had disappointment.
'Shit! I was so focused calming Nolo down I completely discredited Karma.' Kurt thought freezing up going stiff.
"Uh Karma-I didn't-uh-" Kurt stuttered trying to find the right words.
"No need to apologize Kurt…you were right." he said looking at Nolo with a solemn expression. Kurt looked back at Nolo mouth agape pleading for help, and of course when Nolo gave none turned back to Karma who was once again looking back at his eyes, no longer filled with disappointment and sorrow, but were once again filled with determination and were challenging.
"I wasn't aware that it was a fact Nolo." Karma replied with a calm smile that completely contradicted his eyes. All the Teku's knew that Nolo hated when his authority was up for discussion or debate and even knowing this Karma didn't back down.
"Well, it is." Nolo all but growled back.
"Then prove it, show me that I'm Just an Attention whore like Kurt Said" Kurt Cringed at that. "Show me that your better than Vert with a race. Show all of us that you are the best, if Vert wins then you stop questioning my insight and mechanical ingenuity!"
"Wait, why me?!" Vert asked confused with wide eyes as to why it had to be him. Yeah he wanted to stick up for himself but not like this! He wanted to fight his own battles.
"It would have no merit if I raced him, my point wouldn't be proven, however." Karma looked at Vert over his shoulder. "If you beat him that would prove my data is in fact correct and it will improve our overall racing skills." Karma looked back forward, his short blond hair swishing from side to side.
"Besides you have the spirit and determination to win that I don't" Karma looked away smiling with embarrassment "in other words you have a better feel of the flow than I do."
Karma made eye contact with Nolo who calmed down but still looked menacing, his eyes widened for a split second before reverting back.
There was a Shine in Karma's eyes the same kind that Tone had.
'He took in account the racing flow, the waves that connected everyone and everything. Tone knew exactly how to use the flow to his advantage. Has Karma tapped into this flow and I've just not been listening?' Nolo thought feeling like a complete and utter moron.
"And if you win" Karma addressed snapping Nolo out of thought by Karma's voice and looked at the other with blank curious eyes.
"I'll leave the Teku." Everyone was taken aback by this, sure Nolo didn't like to listen to anybody but Karma always had good insight and that had been the main reason why they had won so many races against other gangs.
Through Karma's knowledge of the other racer's cars, cunning intelligence, and advanced diagnostic's Karma was their ace in the whole. If they needed re-configuring on a certain part of the car Karma was there in a split second working on it from dusk till dawn. But it stopped there since like the stereotypical men that they are, didn't want someone else telling them how to drive. This had ended up costing them more races then when they had listened to Karma.
"Karma stop, you don't have to do this." Karma just ignored Vert in favor of holding eye contact with Nolo.
"So is it a deal Nolo?"
Nolo just stood there for second and was about to answer before but the roar of an engine interrupted him. That roar belonged to none other than a metal maniac that had decided to join its group that had been waiting on the other side of the cliff. His attention on the conversation at hand lost.
"Nolo?" Karma asked trying to get their leaders attention.
Nolo turned his head over to Karma with his usual enraged face.
"I'm the Leader! And as the Leader I'm the best, I know it, you know it we all know it. No one's better than me and none of your stupid calculations can't do nothing to change that! And What I Say Goes!" Nolo spat then stormed over to the leader of the Metal Maniacs to rant and rave like he usually did. Karma let out an angry disappointed sigh.
"Oh come on that's so unfair! He's only the leader because he was Tone's brother!" said Vert letting out an angry burst.
Karma smiled sadly. "It's okay Vert thanks for sticking up for me it's nice to know that at least someone has my back." That was a stab through the chest for Kurt.
"And bedsides, now I know that my theories are correct." Karma spoke deflated
"Karma…" Kurt tried to find the right words but found that he couldn't. "I'm gonna go back and work on Chicane. If you need me for anything Vert you'll know where to find me." Karma told the blond while completely ignoring Kurt's existence. Vert watched Karma leave and turned back, Kurt had his shoulders slumped over.
"Ah man, I really screwed up didn't I?" Kurt asked rubbing the back of his neck.
Vert scoffed with his arms crossed.
"You think?" Vert couldn't blame Kurt for what he did, he knew he was just trying to keep Nolo from exploding.
Karma picked up his hand held screen that showed a model of Chicane spinning around. He looked up when he heard some shouting; it turned out to be Nolo shouting at Tork…again. It appeared as if they were going to race (no surprise) there they were leaders of two of THE Biggest Drag Racers it the Entire city.
Karma went back to running scenarios on the screen until he heard a very familiar voice. Karma looked up to see Marcy aka Wild in between Nolo and Tork. Karma sighed knowing that this would lead to trouble because as anyone could tell Nolo was a loose cannon and was probably going to challenge them to a race over their stupid pride.
Karma had decided to ignore it for now up until the point that he heard the screeching sound of tire against asphalt, he jerked his head up seeing two racing Leaders Spin out. Vert and Taro (who had made an appearance earlier) and Karma all got in their cars and sped over, and once Wild was pulled back up from the cliff they all turned their attention to a small floating robot.
"Racers, Dr. Tezla needs your help again." the robotic voice monotonously said.
Vert scoffed crossing his arms. "Yeah well, when we wanted Nitrox he wouldn't even talk to us, we just wanted to race on Highway 35."
"Dr. Tezla needed all the Nitrox for his research." the robot said tone unwavering.
"Oh yeah? Then why does he need us now?" Kurt asked just as miffed.
"The Drones have the Wheel of Power."
Kurt and Vert felt their blood go cold and they quickly made their way to their cars leaving Karma confused.
Karma approached the robot. "These 'Drones'…are they any good?" he asked with small apprehension.
"They're robots. They're perfect."
If the floating robot put it that way then there was no room for further argument.
'This was not going to be easy was it?' Karma thought and a wave of anxiousness swept over him.
"Hey! Where're you going?! Nothing is more important than the Teku!" Nolo shouted at his leaving team.
Kurt turned around with a hard gaze, his gloved hands were clenched and his jaw held tightly. "This is." he said sternly to the Teku leader. Nolo was surprised at the demanding tone, the leader kept his face solid and crossed his arms.
'Kurt finally showing some backbone…This is going to be get interesting.'
Nolo nodded his head in approval; he walked off to his car without another word got in and started his powerful ignition. That was enough for Karma, as then brunette went to get in Chicane and followed Vert and Kurt with Wild and Taro in tow; their cars disappearing in the distance heading towards danger.
(End Flashback) *Places smelly sock under your nose*
"And it just spiraled down from there." Chuck sighed sitting back down on his bed rubbing his jeans legs.
"We had to beat these drones in realms created by these 'sentient beings' called Racing Realms. They created robots to test these realms, but had abandoned them after they had forgotten the true purpose of racing, and they became corrupt from their desire of winning."
Chucks pale white hands tightened into fists. "Then there were these…Silencerz guys who could disguise themselves as us, and the enemy. And that's the gist of it."
Mike blinked sitting on the ground against the wall, what did Chuck just say?
"So…wait," said Mike waving his hands "You didn't always have blond hair covering your face?" Chuck gave him an exasperated look.
"What?" "I thought you were a natural blonde!"
Chuck sighed and ran a hand through his hair as if the very thing itself contained many memories.
Chuck looked away.
"I am. It's just that, I used to really hate my hair so I died it brown every couple of weeks." Chuck let out a laugh.
"And back then I used to tie it in a ponytail. I actually had to tell guys quite often that I was a guy. Gosh I'm glad I stopped doing that."
"You still look like girl to me" Mike teased smiling.
Chuck made a chortling noise and slammed his fist on the mattress, his cheeks tinted red from embarrassment. Mike laughed fully enjoying himself, it was then he remembered something and jumped up suddenly scaring the blonde.
"And I thought you couldn't drive!" Mike exclaimed pointing an accusing finger to his friend.
"You had me spend hours trying teach you how to work Mutt! Not mention the fact that you got the car stuck in that rock thing thirty feet in the air! Tell me how you pulled that one off!"
Chuck smiled sheepishly playing with the sheets on his bed. "Oh no, I can drive. But not to the same extent to you drive I'm used to 88 mph as a regular speed not, I don't know, 258 miles per hour!"
"Oh." Mike said satisfied by that answer. "But still! Thanks a lot man! You really had me going there for a while." Chuck huffed giving Mike another exasperated look. "Cut me some slack Mikey! I had to do that so you wouldn't be suspicious of anything!"
"Suspicious of what?!"
"You shouldn't ask questions that you don't want to know the answer to! It's better if I don't say. Okay Mikey?" The brunette crossed his arms sighing and nodded his head, he heard Chuck let out of relieved breath and his body relaxed.
"Thanks Mike." Chuck said giving his friend a thankful smile. Mike just waved him off and sat down Indian style on the floor in front of Chuck. "So!" said the leader of the Burners patting his legs. "What exactly were these Racing Realms like?" he asked shifting himself on the ground to lie on his stomach.
Chuck smiled a brilliant smile that sent Mike's heart a flutter.
"They were amazing. Each one had their own spectacular individuality each unique each different but just as important as the last."
"Then what was the problem? If it was just racing you wouldn't need to get involved. Why go through these realms, you said that they had forgotten their true purpose so what was so important about these racing realms?"
Chuck walked over to his work table and placed his hands on the container that held small memory cards lined up in a row.
"You would win one of these" He placed one hand on the container "These are AcceleChargers." Mike raised an eyebrow, he's been in Chuck's room more than he could count and he's never seen that containment unit before (a/n The thingy that Gelorum put them in when she and Vert Raced) Where ever it was the blonde hid it, he hid it well. "After successfully winning in a Realm they would give your car a major advantage when utilized. But they have an even greater purpose. They allow you to travel through all the realms and if you complete this grand race, which was made up of all the realms put together, you would supposedly get to race the Accelerons, the ones who made them. Vert, the guy in my pendant, completed the grand Race and saved us from being destroyed by the drones but he disappeared after that race with the drone Leader along with the AcceleChargers and Wheel of Power and none of us have seen or heard from him since." Chuck gripped the storage unit tighter. "I haven't heard from him since, Don't even Know if he's alive or not."
Mike walked over to him and placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder before looking down at the cards.
"But if he had disappeared with the AcceleChargers then how come you have them?" asked Mike directing his golden brown eyes to Chuck.
Chuck turned his around and held the container with both hands and scoffed. "These aren't really them. They're just incredibly good replica's, ones that I've been working on. The real ones are in my car."
Mike felt he had to clean wax out of his ears. "Huh?"
Chuck sighed tenderly rubbing the container, his blue eyes were distant. "I said I have them." He said softly.
"So Wait then…how'd you get them?" asked Mike more confused than he was in the beginning.
"Remember a while back when we infiltrated Kane's HQ?" said Chuck placing the container down back on his desk.
"Yeah, we we're trying to Rescue that Scientist guy from Kane Co. Jacobs Friend the One Who made that Power Cell."
"Yeah the time you almost got us all killed with your ragtag go-cart." Chuck accused with anger
"Hey that go-cart got us out alive Didn't it?" Mike brushed off coolly.
"Anyways remember when you ran right into Kane's main office?"
"…Yeah?"
"And remember how he was meeting with someone at that time?"
"Uh, yeah I think so?"
"Well that person he was meeting with was a member of the Silencerz. I could tell by the uniform and what they had on Kane's desk… they were the AcceleChargers. I they were trying to see if Kane Co. could manifest their power and duplicate their power. When you drove through I grabbed these."
"So why do you have these fake ones?" asked Mike to which Chuck smirked.
"Poetic justice mainly, but if I was ever to go get them as soon as I start up my car the Drones would have tracked their energetic signature if they were ever used. But I've found a way to mask their energy readings, I'd have to modify Chicane a bit for that and we we'll have to face off against them when they do come for them."
"In the end you keep the real ones while Kane ends up with Fakes." Mike smiled like at how devious Chuck could be.
Chuck broke into a full out grin. "You got it."
"So, now you gonna get your car now that you've got your decoys for Kane's Drones?"
"Yeah, I was also kind of hoping that you'd maybe want to go and help me got get it?" asked Chuck expectantly looking at Mike out of the corner of his eye. He batted his eyelashes for good measure, Mike snorted. The brunette smiled excitedly and threw his arm over Chuck's shoulder as they started to walk over to the elevator.
"You bet! Afterword's you'll have to prove just how good your Chicane is up against Mutt. And Do one little thing for me. Deal?"
His golden brown eyes twinkled in excitement, Chuck couldn't help but feel the excitement in the air and shook his head, and of course Mike would think only of racing. Mike held up his fist.
Chuck couldn't help but smile and did the same, pounding it up against Mike's.
"Deal" The blonde spoke the warm feeling in his stomach turned. He hasn't raced for real, in a long time. His heart was beating with adrenaline and for once it wasn't for fear but excitement the good kind for once.
"Oh That Reminds Me" Chuck pressed a button on the side wall and a hole opened up beneath Mike's feet and then closed when he fell through it.
"Whoa!" yelled the dark skinned teen. "No! No! No! No!" he yelped, his arms were flailing, his legs were running in mid air trying to slow himself down. It didn't work. "OOF!" Mike came out a hole at the bottom and landed on the mattress face down from earlier.
Chuck went over to the railing and called down to the Burners leader who was groaning turning to lay flat on his back.
"That's what you get for taking My Locket From Me!" Chuck laughed disappearing into his room, his blonde hair comically moving with every step. He heard Mike yell something smiling in triumph. He went into his elevator to go meet up with the guy that he just pit-falled.
Mike Looked up at the Blonde that was Coming Down to him giggling.
Chuck being devious…the thought made Mike's pants tighten.
