Alfred practically bounced his way to school. It was the last full day before his year got a few days off for study leave which meant that the sports team captains for the next year were going to be announced. He was pretty confident that he was going to be the rugby captain and he was absolutely certain that his brother would become captain of the hockey team.
As they reached the school gates he turned to his brother, "See you at lunchtime, Matt!" He grinned at him before turning and running towards his form room.
The morning passed far too slowly for Alfred's liking. He couldn't focus during his revision sessions because his mind was too busy thinking about the coming announcements. The mid-morning break came and went in much the same way, Alfred eating his snacks and half his lunch before Ludwig stopped him, reminding him that it was only 11am and he would still need to eat something at lunchtime before he went to the sports hall to meet up with the rest of the rugby team.
Eventually it was time and Alfred walked into the sports hall, his stomach twisting nervously for a moment before he saw the rest of his team and went over, pulling half of a slightly squashed sandwich out of his blazer pocket and stuffing it into his mouth before any of the teachers saw him.
Grinning widely he greeted his team, glancing over to where the hockey team were all crowded around his brother in much the same way.
The head of sports arrived and silenced them all before starting to read the list of new team captains, each name accompanied by a cheer from the team in question. Alfred allowed himself to zone out slightly.
"Alfred Jones!"
He jumped slightly as his name was called and suddenly he was surrounded by people cheering, congratulating him and slapping him on the back. He grinned and punched the air, "Epic!" He looked over and grinned at his brother.
The head of sport kept trying to talk over the noise, reading out his list. Alfred couldn't hear what he was saying but through the people crowding him he caught sight of his brother disappearing under a large group of people. Whooping again, Alfred laughed. He forced his way out of the centre of the group, peeling himself out of the group of people still trying to congratulate him.
"Mattie!" Alfred yelled, shoving his way through the hockey group and pulling his brother into a tight hug.
"Al!" Matthew laughed and hugged him, "Well done, Al!"
"And you!" Alfred grinned at him, still having to shout to be heard over the noise of people congratulating their new captains.
Matthew laughed, "Thanks!" He glanced around, "Can we go finish our lunch somewhere quieter? I
can't think over this noise!"
"Oh but it's all for you, little bro!" Alfred laughed and gripped his brother's hand, starting to pulling him out of the group and shoving people away to make room for them, "Let's go sit in the canteen!"
"Yeah!" Matthew nodded and followed Alfred through the crowds, weaving their way to the door and pushing their way outside. Once there were less people around them they both breathed an audible sigh of relief. It was nice to be able to hear and think without having to shout over the voices of almost a hundred other people.
"Seriously, well done Mattie." Alfred turned to his twin and smiled, "I knew you'd get it."
"You've done just as well," Matthew replied softly, smiling back.
"Well, that's true. Maybe you didn't do so well after all!" Alfred laughed at his brother's indignant squeak. "I'm kidding Matt, let's go tell the others. I'm sure Gilbert will be very pleased for you. He might even give you a kiss for doing so well."
Matthew turned bright red, taking a moment to regain his composure, "I-I don't have any idea what you're talking about Al."
"Of course you don't Matt. Race you!" And with that Alfred was off, Matthew starting to run as well though Alfred did have a seconds advantage on his brother. Even so they both crashed into the door of the canteen at the same time. "I won!" Alfred crowed instantly.
"No you didn't...!" Matthew protested, "It was a draw! And as you cheated and started first that means that I won."
"Nu-huh. That's not how it works."
"Actually, Alfred. I saw you both reach the door at the same time." A new voice interrupted.
Alfred looked over and grinned at Kiku, "Hey, you're my friend so you're supposed to take my side. But as you're here and I've got exciting news I suppose I'll let you off this time. Matt and I both got made captain of our teams!"
Kiku broke out a rare smile, "Congratulations both of you. You both greatly deserve it and I am sure you will do well."
"Thanks, dude!" Alfred laughed, "Let's tell the others before-" he was cut off by the bell ringing to signal the end of lunch. "Damn, too late. Well we'll have to tell them later. See you after school, Matt?"
"Um..." Matthew hesitated, moving out of the way of the doors so that he wouldn't get crushed, "I'm supposed to have hockey after school. So I'll see you at home."
"Okay, cool!" Alfred grinned and slapped his brother on the back. "Well done again, I'll hold of telling Dad and Papa until you get back!" With that he was gone, leaving Matthew and Kiku to walk together to their last lesson of the day, which happened to be one that they took together. Matthew's thoughts however were on the upcoming hockey practice. It would be the last one of the year and therefore the last one he would be having that he wasn't in control of. He leaned against the wall outside his classroom and made a mental note to keep an eye on what their current captain was doing and how the training sessions were run, though he had been doing that anyway just in case. He grinned to himself. In the words of Gilbert, things seemed pretty awesome.
