Alfred watched his brother with unabashed glee as the other boy sat with his back to him. Matthew was sitting talking to Gilbert and Alfred knew – or at least hoped – that he was finally asking him out. It had taken them far too long in his opinion, considering they had known each other and been friends since Alfred and Matthew had transferred to where they were living now and Gilbert had been put in charge of showing them around the school. He had been utterly useless at that job but the end result had been Alfred being on reasonably good terms with Ludwig and Matthew and Gilbert becoming pretty much inseparable. They still were, though Gilbert being three years older and in the sixth form part of the school made it a little more difficult for them to hang out all the time. Alfred had watched with increasing frustration as their friendship had – to everyone apart from Matthew and Gilbert themselves – grown into more than just being friends. Which of course was why Alfred had pestered Matthew the night before and that morning trying to convince him to ask Gilbert out. Alfred was completely sure that the German boy would say yes and so had refused to let the subject drop over breakfast until finally Matthew had agreed, his cheeks bright pink with embarrassment.
Now all Alfred had to do was wait. Wait and watch and pretend to be paying attention to Feliciano, Lovino and Antonio who were sitting at the table with him. He kept watching as Matthew and Gilbert stood up, his eyes following as they went over to the doors. And he couldn't stop himself pumping the air with his fist and whooping happily as Gilbert planted a small kiss on Matthew's cheek.
Realising that everyone was now staring at him – including his brother and said brother's new boyfriend – Alfred averted his gaze, quickly opening the textbook in front of him before looking around and saying in a reasonably loud voice, "Uh... Math revision. I got a question right that I was sure I'd screwed up..." he looked away again, noticing far too late that the book he'd opened was one of Lovino's English books.
"Stupid bastard," The Italian boy growled at him, snatching the book back and stuffing it into his bag.
"Oh don't be so mean, Lovi," Antonio chided good-heartedly, a broad grin on his face.
Alfred laughed, glad that attention had started to turn away from him and even more pleased that things seemed to have gone well between Matthew and Gilbert. He leaned back in his chair and picked up one of his own textbooks – this one really was Maths – and started to flick through it. As much as he disliked the subject at least it was one he was good at. Picking up a pencil he started scribbling answered into the margins and underneath the questions themselves, checking them in the back of the book as he finished the page before moving on. He went through them quickly, picking out the ones he could do easily now while he didn't have much time and with his mind mostly focussed on Matthew and Gilbert. He really was pleased for his brother but at the same time he couldn't stop himself feeling rather jealous that Matthew had found someone to be with before he had himself. Although annoyingly whenever Alfred was thinking about liking someone at the moment Kiku's face tended to float into his mind. He smiled slightly. There wasn't really enough to go on yet but at least the quiet boy made Alfred feel like he was actually a person. He didn't have to shout to be heard and noticed when he was in the other boy's presence and he liked that. He also liked that Kiku seemed to listen carefully to everything he said, take it in before giving him an honest response. Hell, he figured he might as well admit it to himself. Alfred was pretty sure he had feelings for Kiku.
Author's Note: *squees* PruCan! And Al finally admitting to himself that he likes Kiku! Hope you enjoy!
Quick reminder - Hetalia does not belong to me. Now I just need to actually write the next chapter (I've been stuck on it for a while!)
