Kate paced back and forth in front of Alexis' door, waiting for a good time to enter. She breathed deeply for a few more seconds and then decided to step in. She turned the knob as softly as possible and crept in.
Despite what had just happened downstairs, the room was serene. Rick was in the corner rocking chair, trying his best to sing a lullaby like Kate usually does, but failing miserably. When Alexis catches sight of her, she squeals in joy, drawing her father's attention. When his eyes meet Kate, her stomach flips horribly and she reaches for her little girl. The girl suddenly gains an unsure expression and Kate curses herself for putting it there. After a wide smile, however, Alexis finds her courage and wraps herself around her mother.
She grips the girl tightly and sings the lullaby to her very softly. She sings it slower than usual and adds in another verse just for the sake of holding on longer, but when she feels her little girl's body go limp against her own, she knows she has to give up. Kate lays Alexis slowly in the crib and watches her for a few more minutes before turning to speak to Rick. She's only half surprised when she finds the room empty. She pulls courage from the innocent face of her sleeping daughter. I'm gonna fix this baby girl. I promise.
She slowly makes her way downstairs and finds him in the kitchen. The lights are dimmed and he's slumped over in a stool at the counter. His entire posture screams aggrivated and she wraps her arms around herself to keep the cold he's producing from seeping into her.
"Hi." All this time to come up with an apology and all she says is hi. Dammit Kate just say it! She takes the sat across from him and toys with her hands for a bit before steeling herself and finally spitting it out.
"I'm sorry."
Both her and Rick's eyes shoot open.
Firstly, because the apology came out louder than expected. And second, because they had both apologized at the same time.
"Well I know what I'm sorry for," she murmurs "what are you sorry for?" Kate looks at him perplexed.
"I'm sorry for not being understanding. Your father being here obviously made you more on edge. What are you sorry for?"
"For down playing our relationship like that. You & Alexis are the most important things in my life. I should've made sure he knew that."
He smiles at her and the intensity slips out if the room. "I guess we both kind of mucked up, huh?" She nods and scoots closer to him. "I really am sorry Kate. I'm just so use to you looking at Alexis likes she's your world, hearing you say that earlier... it hurt."
She tears up at that. She had hurt him. She swore to herself from the day they had started this, she would never do that and she failed. She hung her head and willed the tears away. She saw Rick reaching out to comfort her and stopped him. She didn't deserve it.
"My dad has always been my judge. Not in the way that he was always criticsising me, but rather, I was forever trying to impress him, get his approval. Since the time I was eight and learned how to pitch, it's always been my goal. My dad's dream was always for me to finish school, settle down with a nice, successful man, and give him lots of grandchildren. When he" she began getting choked up, but pushed through it for Rick. "When he looked at you and Alexis today, I saw the judgement all over again and for a split second, 16 year old Katie Beckett was back & begging for approval. That's why I said what I did."
Rick nodded understandingly. He did understand. He spent most, if not all of his life looking for approval from others. The insecurities can eat you alive if you let them and now he just want to hold Kate & never let her go.
"But I don't care." She stated boldly, grabbing his face. "I don't... I don't care. You and that little girl and Even Mo are all that matter to me. You guys are my family. I love both of you." She stares into his eyes. "And I would never be afraid to tell anyone that."
He smiles. "I get it, Kate. In fact, the only reason I reacted the way I did is because... we've been rejected before, me and Alexis, and I know what that rejection can do to a person. I didn't want that beautiful baby girl to feel that pain, so I figured cutting you out would protect us, but I don't think we could ever make it without you."
"Good. Because you'll never have to." She kisses him again and they make their way to bed, sharing in each other's pain and love, both glad they hadn't mada that terrible mistake tonight.
