A shy Gale Hawthorne was at a cafe waiting for his army bus when he sat down at a booth and gave his order to Johanna Mason a watress with a bow in her her hair. Johanna and gL Started talking and when she got off work she took him to the peir. Gale asked Jo if he could send her his letters. a little while later Jo watched Gale get on his bus. 000
a few weeks later Jo started getting letters from the soilder from an army camp in californa then vietnam. on letter stayed on her mind it said in his heart might love and all the things he had been scared of. and said it get tough over there he thinks about the day on the pier and her pretty smile

one friday night Jo was at a football game playing with the marching band when a man read a name of local Vietnam dead. Jo heard a name called. she ran underthe stands and started crying. that name was Gale Hawthorne
