chapter 2
McCoy rolled his eyes angrily as Kirk and Spock, once again, let them selves into the med-bay without permission or announcement, followed by a confused looking Scotty.
"Dammit Jane" he exclaimed "cant you see i'm up to my eyes in paper work?"
"Bones, this is an emergency" She said through Spocks voice
McCoy did a double take at who he though was Spock, he'd never called him 'bones' before.
"Uh- what is it? cant it wait Spock?" He asked, annoyed.
"Ideally a quick solution to our problem is requested, Doctor" Said Spock, in janes voice.
Bones looked between them both in confusion and more building annoyance.
"Just what the hell is going on here?" He demanded
Realizing this was going nowhere fast, Soctty spoke up
"It appears we've had a bit of a mix up in the transporter pad Doctor McCoy"
Bones looked between them again. The way the were standing, the glare he was getting from Spocks eyes, Janes patient and emotonless expression. It all came together and his eyes lit up into a smile on his face.
"you're kidding me" He said
"fraid not" replied Scotty
"I swear to god Bones" said the Captain. She was sitting on one of the beds in the med-bay, next to Spock, as McCoy check all of their vitals and scanned them for any immediate problems. He'd had a huge grin on his face since the moment he realized they were in the wrong bodies.
"This isn't funny"
"I'm Sorry, Jane" He began, holding back his beaming smile "This just doesn't happen every day."
"I agree with the Captain" Came Spock "Taking such joy in our discomfort is particularly unhelpful to the current situation" He was sat perfectly straight as normal, but kept shifting around on the bed, his feet unable to touch the floor.
"whats the matter Spock?" he teased "you look uncomfortable"
"Yes, I am uncomfortable, Doctor" He said with annoyance "I am wearing a dress"
McCoy and Scotty couldn't help but laugh at that, and Jane glared at them even harder. She knew how effective Spocks Vulcan-death-glare could be, so it would defiantly be utilized.
"Alright, alright" Said Bones, calming down from his laughter. "The good news is, you're both perfectly healthy as normal."
"that's it? that's the good news?!" Kirk Complained "How the hell am i supposed to run a ship when im not even in the right body? we cant stay like this!"
"Agreed" Said Spock "We must look for a solution as quickly as possible"
"Is that what my voice really sounds like?" Kirk quietly asked
"perhaps we should attempt to beam back down to the planet." Spcok carried on, ignoring her question "If the malfunction is still present, it should reverse us back into our original bodies"
"Yeah that's a good idea" She agreed "come on, lets go"
They both stood on the transporter pad, in the exact same places they were before. In all honestly, if this didn't work, Jane didn't really have any other ideas.
"Beaming you down now captain" Scotty said as he pushed up the dials. Jane held her breath and closed her eyes in hope.
When she opened them again, they were surrounded in darkness in the jungle. She looked down at her hands only to be disappointed at the sight of Spocks.
Spock noticed her disappointment.
"Maybe its the beam up that causes the malfunction, captain" He offered. She gave him a half smile, knowing that was his way of trying to be comforting.
"Okay" she said into her communicator "Beam us up, Scotty"
This time she didn't hold too much hope, but still closed her eyes.
"well?" she heard Bones ask "who's who?"
She dint have to open her eyes to know it didn't work. She was feeling much too tall, and her hearing and other senses were much more sensitive.
She opened here eyes and sighed, that being enough to answer his question. Scotty and Bones also let out a sigh of disappointment.
She looked to Spock, who was covering his mouth while in the middle of a yawn. She didn't feel tired but suspected it was late.
"alright" she said "its been a long one. Maybe we should sleep this one off and then call Star fleet in the morning, someone else might have had this problem before"
"Only if you're sure captain" Said Spock "There may be other options to explore"
"well you never know" said Scotty "maybe you'll wake up tomorrow, and be back to normal"
"Maybe" she agreed, unconvincingly as they all began to walk out of the room
Bones and scotty were about to go down the opposite end of the corridor when Jane stopped them
"Oh and, maybe we should just keep this between us four for now"
"sure thing" said Bones as they turned away "good night, Jane, Spock" and the two pairs went their separate ways.
As they walked, Spock turned to look up at Jane, with a confused look on his face. His emotions were a little more obvious in her body.
"Captain" he asked "Why is it that you wish to keep this a secret? surely it would be more logical to inform the crew of our current situation in order to avoid confusion"
She gave him a reassuring smile. "I don't think they'd understand, Spock"
He gave her the look he often gave her when she was being illogical, needing more of an explanation than that. But she knew he wouldn't understand. The crew of this ship.. like to gossip. She'd heard the back end of enough stupid rumors about her and her first officer, things like this always just fanned the flames. Anyone could see that they were very good friends, She considered him (and Bones of course) to be her best friends. but who knew what she was to him in that Vulcan brain of his.
It wasn't exactly her fault though, the talking started after he had become 'emotionally compromised' after her close call with death because of Khan. But that was years ago.
And things were only made worse by that pon far incident. Most of the bridge had pieced together what was going on with Spock (mostly by listening in when they weren't supposed to!) So from their perspective, they were going to Vulcan to get Spock married, and had heard that something had happened with Spock and the captain, and then all of a sudden, Spock is mysteriously better, and not married. That's apparently enough the get their imaginations going crazy. little do they know he had practically killed her in a flame driven rage.
He seemed oblivious to rumors though, so she decided to spare him the details of confusing illogical human gossip.
They got to their rooms, which we right next to each other, said good night and went inside.
