I set a small tray of sugar cubes on the glass table next to him. He was crouched down in his usual possession; His legs tightly pressed against his chest and his back arched forward. "Thank you." He said in an emotionless voice, not bothering to turn his head away from the computer screen. I nodded and turned away. As I walked back to the kitchen I couldn't help but think back to when I'd first come to stay with the world's greatest detective L. I remember thinking he was so rude in the way he almost never bothered with anyone, or seemed to care of their existence. But I had soon grown to understand that this was just his way of doing things.

That's when I remembered I was exposed to give L a slip of paper. Watari said it was something L would be very happy to see. Well…maybe happy wasn't the word he used, but I'm sure it's all the same.

I turned sharply on my heels wanting to give it to him as quickly as possible when my face slammed into something. "Owww" I breathed. I looked up to see L, a confused look on his face. I laughed a bit into my hand. "Is something funny?" he asked. I just shook my head not able to speak quiet yet. "Then why are you laughing, It appears to me that you laugh when amused, and if you are not amus-"I cut him off, "ha-ha, L you can't explain laugher, it just happens. But aside from my random outburst." I cleared my throat and continued. "Watari ask I give this to you, it seemed to have slipped my mind, sorry" He ignored my words and took the paper from my hands. "Hm…I see. Yes." He mumbled, and then let the paper fall to the ground, quickly hoping on the chair and opening the computer, and quickly began typing away.

"Hey! What makes you think you can just drop that…" I said but trailed of as I watched him. His eyes moved quickly across the screen. He truly was something to behold…I sighed and walked up behind him, Peering over his shoulder. "What was the paper about?" I asked. He paused for a moment. "Your mother and father" he said. "Oh my god! Was it good? Have they let them free? On please tell me they released them." I said hoping in front of him my hands had found one of his, gripping it tightly. He looked at his hand, the one I was holding then gently pulled in out of my grip. "They've be released." My face lit up in a giant smile. But he continued. "They've been released…dead." He finished his voice almost a whisper. I froze, my smile fading.

Silently I stood. "I'm sorry." He said. Though all I did was shake my head. "I'm going to my room, call me if you need anything." Was all I said, my voice dead. "I won't need anything for the rest of the day." He replied and I nodded. There truly was no use in hiding my tears, I knew he'd be watching me on the cameras and I knew he'd hear my weeps and yells. But not being with him in person to stare at me was better than nothing. When I reached my room I closed the door gently, then turned and pressed my back to it and slid down till I was sitting on the floor. My face buried in my knees and my hands wrapped around myself I cried. I cried not because they had died, but because I was unable to help them. I was unable to do anything while they suffered in those hostage cells. I cried myself to sleep, though I hadn't noticed I was asleep until I felt something around me.

I looked up and saw L leaning over me. His hand on my back and a blanket around me, I was in my bed…had he moved me? "I thought it would be more comfortable to sleep on the bed rather than the floor." He said. I just stared up at him. My eyes stung but I didn't care, because he seemed so different. "Thank you" I said my voice still scratchy from crying.
