Chapter 4: The Liger Attacks
Everyone gasped at what they saw. Her coat was partially off so that her upper arm was showing. Kai was left speechless, and he moved closer to Mia so that he could take the coat off of her entirely. Mia let him do so without struggling, and her coat was now off. She then took off her black gloves, leaving her arms bare.
"So now you know." Mia said finally. "I lost my entire left arm during the incident where Kai lost his memory. Kaya managed to make this new metal arm for me. And I also lost my right leg as well. Kaya had made a leg for me too; I don't know what I would have done without her." She said with a smile, and motioned to her arm and leg. The metal was done in great detail, and looked as if it were real if not for the metal itself, but it would never compare to real limbs. She lifted up her jeans a little bit so the group could see the metal leg shining in the light.
"What happened during the incident? What was so bad that you lost your limbs and I lost my memory?" Kai urged.
"That's none of your concern. I have to go."
"No, Mia, it is my concern. Why can't you just tell me, please?" Kai asked again. Tears had formed in Mia's eyes. "The last thing you said to me was that you owed me. So this is how you can repay me, ok?" Kai said. Without realizing it, he had just remembered an event that had happened before the incident.
"Kai…you remember?" Mia asked. Kai looked up confused.
"What are you talking about?" He asked.
"I said that before the incident. And you remember it." Mia said, with obvious optimism. "Do you remember anything else?" She asked cautiously, as though if she asked him louder it would scare the memory away. Kai shook his head and Mia's cheerfulness went away almost as quickly as it came.
"Will you tell me about the incident now?" Kai asked again. Mia gave out a sigh and she nodded.
"You're right, I do owe you."
--Flashback—
"Mia, hurry up, we have to get going!" Kai called for his friend. They were already a little bit late for the ball, and Kai never liked being late. They were currently at Kai's mansion, and he wore a black tuxedo with a royal red shirt and a black tie. His black dress shoes were shined to perfection, and his two-toned hair was styled as always. The ball they were attending was of course formal, but it was hosted by Voltaire as a humanitarian gesture towards his business. And naturally, his grandson would be invited, as well as a guest to keep Kai company. Kai had chose Mia to come along with him to perhaps…liven up the party as one might put it. "Mia!"
"I'm coming I'm coming! Don't bust a lung there Mr. Sunshine." Mia said sarcastically. She walked down the staircase to see Kai standing at the bottom of it waiting for her. Even though Kai was still young and therefore hadn't reached puberty yet, Mia was still shorter than him.
Once Kai laid his eyes on her, he couldn't take them off. She wore an elegant red halter dress, caressing her body showing her curves. It was of course floor length since Mia wanted to be proper, but as she walked it would show her toes in black high heels so she could attempt to look taller. Mia had curled her hair so curls would flow down her back, and she put it up into a half ponytail. To top it all off, she wore ruby earrings and a matching ruby necklace that Kai had given her for her birthday not too long ago. "Cat got your tongue?" Mia said as she finally reached the bottom of the stairs.
"Huh? I…uhh…you…uhh…" He stumbled. He couldn't find the right words to describe her beauty. "You look…stunning." He said breathlessly. Truth be told, words could not describe how she looked. She was magnificently breathtaking. Mia laughed.
"You look quite handsome yourself. Now, shouldn't we be going? We're already late." She had a look of guilt on her face, but Kai couldn't be mad at her just for being a little behind schedule.
They were driven in a black limousine, and Voltaire had walked out first onto the red carpet leading into the extravagant building. Kai then stepped out, and he offered his hand out to Mia who took it as she stepped out. Taking his arm, Mia was lead down the red carpet.
"This place is remarkable. I can't believe my grandfather would host such an event. It seems too charitable of him." Kai said. Mia gave him a look as if saying 'why-not-give-him-a-second-chance' but Kai merely sneered. "Oh please, that fool will never change. He's too old to come accustomed to new ideas." Kai said.
Mia was in awe once they entered the building. The ceiling was high, and hanging from it was a goliath chandelier, with gold forged into beautiful designs, and finding the most expensive and graceful of lights to radiate the entire ballroom. The room itself was quite a feat as well. The floor was not carpeted, but instead it was made of pure marble. In the center of the room was a dancing area made of hardwood where the two could already see guests dancing gracefully to the ballroom music. Surrounding the dance area were tables for different groups to be seated. They were all covered in white table cloths with tresses along the edges. Each table had a bouquet of red and white roses as well as baby's breath for the center piece. For every chair there would be a set of silverware and a wine glass. Mia looked further into the ballroom and could see the head table where all the top brass would be sitting at no doubt. However, they're table had a red table cloth with the design of small black dragons going around the edges of the cloth, matching Voltaire's corporation's colors. And instead of silverware, they were to eat on china that would usually be stored for the more special occasions. They're center piece was the same as the rest of the tables, although it did seem a little bigger.
"May I take your name, sir?" A waiter asked Kai. He replied saying his first and last name, and the waiter checked his list. "Of course. You won't be sitting with your grandfather at the head table, I'm sorry to say, but let me escort you to your table." He said politely. Kai and Mia followed the man who was wearing black dress pants, a white shirt, and a black vest as well. Once Mia and Kai were seated at their table, the waiter bowed and left them. Mia felt awkward because they were sitting at a large table which would be filled with strangers in short time. Already sitting with Mia and Kai was a young couple that looked happily married. The man looked distinguished in his black tuxedo which was similar to Kai's. His wife wore a beautiful emerald green dress and her brunette hair was tied back into a bun. She sipped her tea politely and set it back down. Beside the couple was a boy about the same age as Mia and Kai. He had long blond hair that was tied back into a braid, and he wore a white tuxedo which made him look very innocent. He stared back at Mia and smiled courteously at her. Mia assumed he was the couple's son or at least nephew.
"Do you know these people?" Mia asked Kai.
"I thought you might know them." Kai admitted. The man overheard they're conversation and suddenly became very interested.
"Why, aren't you Kai Hiwatari and Mia Vialetti? I've heard of you both, rumor has it you're searching for some rare creature." He asked.
"Well, yes." Mia replied. It was true that she was searching for Draconian, but that bit beast was more than just a 'rare creature' as that man put it. "I take it that you're a man that's very well informed." Mia said.
"Of course. I have to be as the Lieutenant General of the First Fleet in the military. I'm an old friend of your grandfather." He said looking at Kai. "I guess I should introduce us. My name is Lieutenant General Jason Mofina. This is my wife Lisa, and my son Christopher. But you can just call him Chris." He said motioning towards his son.
"It's a pleasure." Mia said. "You're a Lieutenant General? You must be someone of high stature to have worked all the way to that type of promotion. And I've heard great rumors of the first fleet as well. As a matter of fact…weren't you the one who brought down the Fifteenth Brigade right in the enemy's backyard?" Mia asked while wondering to herself.
"Why yes. I'm surprised a young lady such as yourself would know anything about the military. Do you have any connections to the military?" Jason asked curiously.
"Well, let's just say I have my sources." Mia answered politely. Jason looked beside Mia and noticed Kai staring blankly at the table.
"You don't seem very talkative for the grandson of a man of such high importance." Jason said, almost praising Voltaire as though he were God himself. He looked at Kai, but common courtesy was not Kai's forte. Trying to find an excuse, any excuse, Kai wanted nothing more than to leave and go somewhere else.
"Please excuse us. We have to be somewhere." Kai said, and he and Mia both got up to leave. Kai gave out a sigh along with Mia. The two walked over to the other side of the ballroom and stood by the wall.
"Thanks, that was getting a bit annoying." Mia said finally. "Anyways, I'll be right back; I have to go to the washroom." Mia said, and with that she left. Of course before she even wanted to enter a washroom, she'd have to find it first. Kai smirked. Good luck finding it, you'll need it. He thought.
"So you're Kai, huh?" A voice asked him.
"Depends on who's asking." He replied. Kai turned around to where the voice was, and it was Chris walking towards him.
"So, are you seeing that Mia girl?" He asked, getting straight to the point. Kai looked confused and he didn't understand Chris. "Are you in a relationship with her is what I'm asking." Chris said. Kai started blushing, but it went unseen by Chris. Kai finally understood what Chris's intentions of talking to Kai were.
"No, and I don't think you should try making a move on her. The last time someone tried he ended up in a coma for six months." Kai said. Chris was shocked, and he glared at Kai.
"Is that a threat? I thought you weren't seeing her, so why are you so protective of her?"
"I'm not seeing her. She's strong enough to put someone in a coma for six months herself you know." Kai said, irritated by this boy's idiocy. Chris gave a look saying 'wow' and he didn't know what else to say.
"That washroom was like a jungle." Mia complained as she walked towards Kai. She noticed Chris standing with him and she cocked her head to one side. "Oh, hi there. You're Jason Mofina's son, Chris, right?" Mia asked. He seemed delighted that she remembered his name, and nodded in appreciation.
"That's right. Sorry about my father earlier, he can get a little bit nosy sometimes, especially when he's interested in the subject. My mother is probably yelling at him right about now." He laughed. "But I think we should get back. Dinner's going to be served soon." He suggested. Mia agreed and she dragged Kai along with her to follow Chris back to the table. Kai glared grudgingly at Chris. Maybe I will send you into a coma. He thought.
Once they arrived back at the table, more people had shown up. The seats had somehow changed and Mia didn't bother introducing herself to everyone else, instead she ended up sitting down in between Chris and Kai. Soup was the first course in their fine meal. Mia and Kai both enjoyed the cream of mushroom soup, and the appetizer was soon to follow. After the appetizer was another full seven courses. Mia took a couple bites from each course, and by the end she was full. Kai did the same as Mia, but they were both only used to three or four coursed meals, never seven. It seemed a bit…overboard in Kai's thoughts. During the entire meal, Chris would try to talk to Mia and start up some conversation, but whenever he opened his mouth he would soon stop, and Kai would always be found glaring at someone or something afterwards.
The majority of the table had left, and mostly everyone was dancing to the music. Mia, Kai, and Chris all sat at the table and they all felt awkward. Chris's parents had left to go dance as well, and he didn't know what to do. He finally made up his mind. He breathed in and out heavily several times as if mentally preparing himself for something important, and he stood up.
"W..w-would…would you uhh…would you like to…d-dance with me?" Chris stuttered out. He offered a hand to Mia, who hesitated, but she still took it and stood up. She gave a polite smile and together they walked away. Kai's hand grew into a fist, and if he squeezed any harder he would most likely start to bleed. Chris escorted Mia to the dance floor, and he took her right hand in his left hand, and then wrapped his right hand around her waist. Mia rested her left hand on his shoulder, and they danced slowly with the music being played.
An older man at around the age of 22 spotted Kai, and he noticed he was glaring at a couple on the dance floor. His hands were clenched into a fist and his right foot was on the leg of the table. His seat was tilted so that the front legs were off the ground, and he sat there trying to keep himself balanced while glowering at the young couple. The man merely sighed and walked over to the two-toned hair male.
"You know kid, if you like her so much then step in and dance with her already. I have a feeling she's going to say yes." He said. Kai looked over at him and gave the most evil of glares.
"What do you know?" He said bitterly and he walked off to the dance floor. He paced towards the dance floor, and the song just began to change. Mia looked very uneasy, and Kai could tell. He tapped Chris on the shoulder.
"May I cut in?" He asked politely, but without another word Kai almost yanked Chris off his feet and Kai started dancing with the girl. The song had changed, but it was still slow. Instead of holding each other like Mia and Chris had, Mia wrapped both of her arms around Kai's neck which left him no choice but to wrap both his arms around her waist. Kai glanced back and saw that Chris walked back to the table looking like a complete idiot. I hope I didn't look like that. Kai thought, and he gave a smirk.
At that moment, the two could hear a crash coming from one end of the ballroom. Mia and Kai looked over to the wall and it was completely obliterated, leaving traces of gravel and rubble behind. The crowd around them began to panic, but the two didn't know what at. Everyone around them started running, and they pushed Mia and Kai away from each other.
"Kai!" Mia yelled out.
"Mia!" He called back. It was no use though; he could barely see what was going on. Looking around, he could see no traces of his grandfather, and he could see Chris and his parents running out of the building. Kai scowled and he started running towards Mia, that is, if he could find her.
Mia ran as fast as she could in the horde. The new bit beast took the form of a liger, which was believed to be part tiger, part lion. Mia reached under her dress, trying to pull out her dagger and Beyblade so maybe she could try saving herself. From the corner of her eye, she could see Kai running towards her.
"Kai!" Mia shouted, relieved to see him. He took out his ruby dagger and put Dranzer into it. Fire encircled the blade of the dagger and Kai charged at the beast. Mia finally reached her sapphire dagger and Beyblade, and she put Lohengrin into the dagger. The tip of her blade began forming a white orb, and what seemed to be blue lightning shot from the orb. It directed itself to the liger, and without another thought the liger was surrounded in ice, and it was frozen. Kai's blade was already engulfed in fire, and he used it to slice through the ice, cutting through the bit beast as well. Kai gave out a sigh, and most people in the ballroom had escaped. Only a few people were left, and they were baffled at what had just occurred. Kai turned his back to the blocks of ice and looked at Mia gratefully.
Mia's eyes turned wide and the liger emerged from the ice. Kai was in his way, so the liger ripped through Kai's stomach with his claw, and threw him to the ground out of the liger's path, leaving Kai lying on the floor. Blood spewed from the wound, and he coughed up a bit of blood. Mia dropped her dagger and tried running, only to have the beast bite into her left arm. She gave out a painful scream as Kai could only watch helplessly. Tears began to fall from her face, and she reached for her dagger. Helplessly, she jabbed into the liger a number of times, but it had no effect on the creature. Slowly, the liger tore off her flesh, and he left the bones of her arm lying on the ground, detached from her body. Wanting to taste more flesh, the creature bit into her right leg, and another scream came from her. Kai watched in horror as she was being ripped to pieces, and he let out a cry.
"No! MIA!" He shouted with the remainder of his strength. But to no avail, the creature continued gnawing on her leg.
"Let, go of me!" She cried out with the last of her voice, and she kept jabbing the dagger into the creature. Using the last of her strength, she used her blood as a liquid to produce mist using her water dagger. She stabbed the dagger in the liger one last time, and the mist began to spread throughout its body. The creature started to weaken, and he collapsed onto the ground. The mist from Mia's human blood poisoned the liger, and he was lying on the ground unable to move, but not before tearing off Mia's leg.
Her dress was now ripped from her right leg, and it flowed down her body like a useless piece of cloth. Using her right hand, she slowly pulled herself across the floor towards Kai, trying to make sure he was alright. Blood was staining the marble floor as she moved, and she would stop every few minutes to catch her breath. She prayed that Kai wasn't injured too badly, but she knew he would be. The liger's claw that pierced through his body had gone all the way through, and he was lying on the floor unconscious. Mia finally made her way to the boy, and she tried lifting her head to see his face, but she had no strength left. She shook Kai gently, hoping he would awaken.
"Kai…Kai. Please, you gotta wake up. Kai." She cried out, still shaking his still body. Tears were running down her cheek, and his eyes slowly started to open. Kai looked down and he could see Mia, and panic ran through him. He looked around and the liger had fainted, but Kai was afraid that he would start moving again. He was in pain, but probably not as much as Mia.
"Mia." He said gently. She was crying, and Kai didn't know what to do. He tried getting up, and he took off his jacket. He tore it in two, and he wrapped the cloth around Mia's wounds. He didn't want Mia to bleed to death. "Hang in there. I know you'll make it." Kai encouraged, but Mia's eyes soon began to close.
"Kai…I'm…s-so…cold." She said, almost in a whisper. "It's getting…hard to…" She said, but she couldn't finish her sentence. It was too hard on her. Kai held his wound with his right hand, and pain coursed through his body. He wrapped his other arm around Mia, trying to keep her warm.
"It's ok Mia. Just keep talking. Don't you dare fall asleep. I won't let you die on me." He said as tears fell down his cheek.
The man that had told Kai to dance with Mia earlier had woken up after he had fainted. He glanced around and saw two teens still talking, but the girl had lost two of her limbs. Quickly, he searched for his cell phone and dialed 9-11. After he called them and had told them what had happened, he raced over to the two teens.
"Are you two ok?" He asked, even though it was a stupid question. "No, of course not. Don't worry you two, I've called 9-11 and they're sending ambulances here. It'll be ok." He saw that Mia was shaking violently in Kai's arm, and Kai was holding his own wound in pain. The man frowned, and he waited for the ambulance to arrive.
--End Flashback—
"After that, I had woken up in the hospital, but I still didn't have an arm and leg yet. The liger was caged and executed, but the police never found out he was a bit beast. Kai had woken up before me, and the doctors said that Voltaire had already taken him away back to the mansion. Voltaire had ordered the police to keep me in the hospital so I couldn't follow them. He made sure I would never be able to go search for Kai, even after he was on every magazine in the world after the World Championships, I wasn't allowed to go see Kai. But I think the rules have changed." Mia said with a weak smile. "We only met through a twist of fate, so Voltaire can't say anything about that."
"I had no idea. Voltaire had always told me I got the injury in a Beybattle, but I guess I never should have believed a Beyblade could do that much damage to me." Kai admitted.
"But we did track down the man who had saved you guys. His name was Dante Yamanaki. He knows a thing or two about the bit beasts and the daggers, and he also works for a satellite company dealing with tracking. He's given us some leads as to where Draconian might be. But we've never been able to find it." Daryl said, cutting in. Everyone was left speechless, and no one knew what to say.
"WHO'S UP FOR SOME PIZZA!" Tyson yelled loudly. Mia sweatdropped and laughed half-heartedly at the young man. What a guy. She joked. Without realizing it, Tyson had livened up the mood immensely.
"Why don't you three come with us? We're on vacation right now, and we'll be visiting France and Italy as well. It'll be fun with you guys around." Ray suggested.
"That's very kind of you, but we have to-" Mia was cut off.
"Aw c'mon." Max said. "You've probably been working non-stop for the past four years; I bet a little vacation would do you some good." He said happily.
"They're right. It'll be fun to have some other girls around." Mariam said. Everyone agreed with the suggestion. Mia gave out a sigh, and glanced at Daryl and Kaya.
"What do you say guys?" Mia asked, directing it towards Daryl and Kaya. They both nodded and smiled, and Mia gave out a smirk. "Fine."
