Chapter 5: Detour
"Ha…ha-ha…HACHOO!" Tyson sneezed out. The sound that Tyson made reverberated through the skies and everyone looked in that direction.
"You could at least say excuse me, Tyson." Hilary lectured with a sigh. But she didn't completely blame Tyson; they were after all in the mountains of the Swiss Alps. They all wore ski jackets and warm clothing. Tyson watched as everyone got their gear ready to go on the slopes. Tyson had chose skiing instead of snowboarding, since he was told skiing was easier. Mia, Daryl, and Kaya had come with them. After all, they invited the three for the break along with them.
This is completely pointless. We're wasting so much time by doing this. Mia thought. She hated relaxing when she could be doing things of importance. She gave out a frustrating sigh and went with the others onto the ski lift.
Mia had sat with Ray on the lift, and in front of them were Kai and Michael. Mia smiled as the two argued back and forth at who was better at the sport.
"You ok?" Ray asked politely. Mia cocked her head to one side, confused at what he meant. "You're a bit fidgety." Ray explained when he saw her puzzled expression.
"Oh. I guess so. It's just I haven't relaxed in so long. It feels awkward doing this when I feel like I can be tracking down Draconian."
Ray gave her a reassuring look, and Mia gave him a small smile. Taking advantage of the situation, Ray started asking questions.
"It must've been hard for the past three years. I know Voltaire didn't let you see him, but that wasn't the only reason, was it?" Ray asked. She nodded solemnly.
"I always thought Kai was happier without me. I still think that, but now I guess it's different somehow." Seeing him has made me want to be with him. "Voltaire tried to stop me from getting in his plans so many times. It's honestly getting annoying now." Mia admitted.
"How did you meet him? I know the girls want to know pretty badly, thinking it might have been romantic." He laughed. "But somehow I highly doubt that." Ray said.
"You have a good judgment then." Mia said with a laugh. "It definitely wasn't romantic. But we didn't meet on bad terms either."
"So what happened then?" Ray inquired.
"Kai told me later on that he had recently escaped Biovolt when we had first met. We were both on a train leaving Russia to go to China. From there Kai had intended to make his way to Japan so he could escape his grandfather. But there were people on the train who had other intentions."
--Flashback—
The train moved along the tracks in the warm weather. They had just left the harsh blizzard in Russia, and were now headed straight into the tropics of China. A young girl sat on the seats of the train. Even though she looked no younger than eight years old, she had already lost her innocence at a younger age.
Great. That was the worst lead we've had on Draconian yet. Good thing Daryl didn't come, or else he would've wasted his time on nothing, just like I did. Mia sighed and she looked around the train. Everyone there appeared normal enough, but two people had caught her attention. They both wore black suits and shades, and they looked like two gangsters from a bad mafia movie.
Bunch of wannabe gangsters. Mia thought skeptically. Even at such a young age she had the intellect of a college graduate and the physical capabilities of a rising athlete. Soon after, Mia had fallen asleep on her seat.
One of the guards stood at his post checking the list of all passengers in the train. When he looked through it, he was surprised at what he saw. He picked up the phone and dialed a number.
"Hey chief." He said when the other line had picked up. "There's a little girl on my list that's only seven years old, but it seems that there's no one with her. Seems a bit fishy don't you think?" He asked, eyeing the girl that was asleep on the train. The person on the other line just laughed.
"Yeah she's fine, don't worry about her. Her…'father's' kind of an old friend of mine. Her name's Mia right?" There was pause and he assumed the guard on the other line nodded his head. "In fact, I think she might be able to help out in our little…situation. She's a bit of a pipsqueak even for her age, but when you actually see her, don't make fun of her height, no matter what you do." He said as a side note. The guard went to go check on Mia and he stopped at her seat.
"The Chief's right, she is a pipsqueak." He said to himself. Mia had heard him and her ear twitched. She immediately sat up and glared at the man.
"WHO ARE YOU CALLING A PIPSQEAK SO SMALL THAT YOU CAN'T EVEN SEE THROUGH A MAGNIFYING GLASS! I'M STILL GROWING YOU BACKWATER COUNTRYSIDE JERK!" She shouted. This caught the entire train's attention and everyone looked straight at Mia who was blushing furiously.
"Sorry kid, I didn't mean that. Anyways, the Chief told me you might be able to help us out on something." He said.
At that moment, the two people that Mia had noticed earlier got up abruptly and they both directed guns at everyone in the train.
Ok…so they're not wannabe gangsters after-all…
"Put your hands up if you don't want a bullet through your head." One of them ordered. Mia followed everyone's lead when she held up both her hands, and the guard had been knocked out by one of the goons when he tried to fight back with his weapon. Mia eyed the guns carefully, the type of detail would only be known to the Smith and Wesson guns. She figured by the design that it was the new model SW1911PD. She grinned inwardly when she noticed what amateurs the two were. They hadn't even released the safety, and she doubted they had put any new magazines in there. When they headed towards Mia, she gasped and screamed.
"LOOK!" She pointed behind the two. They looked back, and Mia lunged forward. She jumped up and kneed both of them in the face. They both fell to the ground unconscious.
"What do you think you were doing?" One man asked. Mia looked to the voice and everyone looked at her grudgingly.
"He's right. Don't you think they'd notice when two of their men have gone missing?" Another woman piped in.
"We would've been better off if we had just cooperated with them until we reached China." Another said. Mia gave a frustrated sigh and rolled her eyes.
"They're terrorists. I'm pretty sure they'd end up killing as all even if we did obey their orders. You see, that's where terrorists got their name from." Mia explained irritably.
"She's right." The guard said as he slowly regained consciousness. "Thanks kid. Looks like you can help us out. You see we have a special guest aboard this train. You know…the front car kind." He hinted, and Mia knew exactly what he meant.
"So that's why they're here. How did you know I could help out though?" Mia asked.
"Well, my superior said your father was an old friend of his. He seemed to know you pretty well too, come to think of it." He said. Mia's eyes narrowed at the mention of her father. Immediately, her voice became cold and harsh.
"You go below and try to reach the front car. Wait for my signal once you get there." Mia ordered strictly. "I'm going up top to throw them…a surprise party." Mia grinned at the last phrase.
"What's the signal?" He asked.
"Uhh…I hadn't thought that far." Mia mumbled to herself. "You'll see the signal once it comes." Mia said, and with that she ran to the door and kicked it open. She climbed the ladder to the top of the train. The wind blew frantically in her hair, and with all the turns the train would be making, walking would certainly be a hard task to achieve.
On the other side of the train, a man walked slowly as he heard gun shorts from a room. When he reached the area, he saw the Minister of Foreign Affairs kneeling in pain from a wound in his arm.
"Well done." He said to the men who had shot him. "The name's Mesker. And you're Mark Falman, Minister of Foreign Affairs. I want you to contact Minister Marcos right now." He ordered him. They brought the Minister of Foreign Affairs into the room with the switchboard, and they contacted the Minister.
"Hello, this is Falman, it's urgent." He told the secretary. She patched the line to the Minister and Mesker took the phone.
"I'm gonna cut to the point here. You have our leader in prison eight; bring him to the station this train is stopping at, and you'll get Falman back." The man on the other line hesitated, but he knew what he had to do. Mesker frowned to himself and he hung up the phone. "Something isn't right here. I want you to search the entire train top to bottom!" He ordered his men. They did as instructed and moved out.
Mia walked with much difficulty on the top of the train. The wind was in her face and it pushed her backwards. She had almost reached the front of the train, and she was relieved. The train had been moving alongside a cliff, and a branch stuck out of it just above the train. Mia gasped as she hit the branch, and it made her loose her balance. Loosing momentum, it appeared as though she flew back the train. She tried grabbing onto the ladder once she was at the back of the car, but her grasp slipped and she fell.
Mia thought she was done for when she stopped all of a sudden. There was a figure that was climbing up the ladder, and he had caught Mia right in the nick of time. She looked up and it was a boy no older than she was.
"You know there's a real art in train walking. I'm surprised you made it this far." He said. His voice seemed mature even at such a young age. Mia was really disappointed when she noticed the boy was taller than her. I thought girls were supposed to be taller than the boys first. She thought angrily.
"Thanks, I guess." She said. Her sapphire orbs looked into the boy's crimson ones, and she noticed there were numerous bruises on the boy's body. "Who are you, anyways?" She asked finally.
"The names Kai. You?" He simply said.
"Mia. It's a pleasure. So do you know what's going on around here?" She asked.
"I heard some terrorists were on board. So I thought I'd check it out and throw a surprise party." He said.
"Funny, that's what I thought."
"You know you talk very maturely for someone so young. What's your story?"
"Well what's yours? You seem to act and talk just as I do." She countered back. He grinned and Mia climbed onto the ladder. They both managed to reach the front of the train. Mia gave Kai a nod and she took out her dagger. He leaned down in front of the window and stuck his tongue to catch the thugs' attentions. They both looked out the window and Kai had already gone back up with a wide smirk.
Mia leapt down into the car and she threw her dagger right into one of the men's hand. He kneeled down in pain and Mia retrieved her dagger. The other man lunged at Mia but Kai jumped in through the other window and kicked him to unconsciousness. There were two other men in the control panel room that were the original conductors. They thanked Mia and Kai, and Mia climbed out of the window onto the train again.
"Careful out there!" The conductor yelled. "And don't mess with anything! That tender's the life of this train!" He shouted.
"Tender? I thought this was a modern train, not an old-fashioned steam engine." She sighed. "A box of tender…huh?" She thought inwardly, and an idea struck her.
Mesker stood in front of Falman, and they heard a voice coming from the speakers that were already mounted into the wall.
"Attention all gun toning extremists! Can you hear me alright? Or did you all blow your ears out playing target practice?" The voice shouted. It was none other than Mia in the control panel using the mike there. "Let the hostages go! You've got no right dragging civilians into your personal politics!" She said.
"You're working for the Minister, aren't you? If you give me anymore interference I'll kill every single passenger on this train one by one!" Mesker shouted angrily.
"You're just itching to draw blood aren't you?" Mia replied. "Alright then. Please hold onto your seats passengers, and get ready for some turbulence!" She announced. With that said, Kai pulled a lever and water from the box of tender rushed into the car of the train where the terrorists were, and they washed away to the back of the car.
The guard that had been ordered by Mia stood at the back of the car, and he had been waiting 'patiently' for his signal.
"I guess that's my signal." He said aloud. He opened the door to the car and water rushed out of it, as well as the terrorists. He closed the door and he took out his weapon. "Welcome to brig." He said with a smile.
Mesker was still in the halls of the car, and he had been lucky enough not to have been washed away like the others. He slowly got up as he coughed out the water in his lungs.
"Just look on the bright side. You probably needed a shower." Kai retorted.
Mesker launched himself towards Kai, but Mia had already launched her Beyblade. She called out Lohengrin. It took the form of a hydra, which was a mythical dragon with nine heads. In Greek mythology, Hercules had to cut off the head in the center and burn its blood in order to kill it. If he cut off any other head, it would just grow right back. Before Mesker knew it, Mia was standing over him with her dagger in hand, and Lohengrin knocked him out without another word.
"You blade?" Kai asked her. Mia nodded, and Kai's bit chip started glowing. Mia's eyes grew wide, and her blade flew back at her and she caught it in mid-air.
"Could it be? The third element." Mia whispered to herself, but Kai had heard. In the light of the glowing bit chip, a ruby dagger appeared and fell into Kai's hands.
--End Flashback—
Mia and Ray were already going down the slopes at this point, and the others were already listening on intently as she finished.
"Too bad, it wasn't really that romantic." Mariah frowned.
"Anyways, it was then that Kai joined us to look for Draconian. Before I met Kai, it was only me and Daryl, but then Kai introduced the two of us to Kaya, and there we met the fourth element." Mia explained. She was shouting to the others as they went down the slopes, and she was in the front with her snowboard.
Michael was on his skis, and he grinned as he went faster and caught up to Mia. Kai had already caught up to both of them on his snowboard, as did Garland on his skis. The four of them raced down the slopes at an alarming speed while the others dragged behind. More than half the team had never done this, so they didn't know how to build momentum.
"Too slow." Mia and Kai both said, and they both sped past Michael and Garland easily. Garland frowned and he gained more speed. Michael grinned when he saw a rock in front of Garland's path. Michael's smile disappeared when Garland tripped over it and flew right into him and they both went crashing to the ground.
"Look who's winning now." Julia laughed as everyone blew past them.
The cabin that Mr. Dickenson rented out for them was filled with laughter that night. Kaya and Kai kept the fire going and they all sipped their hot chocolate piled with marshmallows.
Kai was using his dagger with Dranzer in it to keep the fire going, and Kaya used her Oracle bit beast to provide enough wood for a year.
"You're getting good with that brother." Kaya praised. She smiled sweetly, and Kai smiled back. "I guess you never lost the ability to do things perfectly, even after you had amnesia." She said.
"Yeah, I guess so." Kai replied.
"It sure is nice to see them working together again." Daryl admitted. Kai and Kaya were at the front taking care of the fire, and the others were sitting on the couches enjoying it. Mia watched closely at Kai, missing every detail of him. The way he smiled when he would look at her, his scent, the way his eyes glistened in the fire. Mia took another sip of her hot chocolate, and stared aimlessly into the fire.
"And here I thought he was always a sourpuss." Tyson joked. Everyone laughed, but they still agreed with him.
"Well he did open up after a while with us. But ever since Mia, Daryl, and Kaya, it's like he's a whole new person. I mean he actually smiles now." Max commented.
"I heard that." Kai piped in loudly. "Any more comments like that and I'll double your training."
The entire gang sweatdropped. Nevermind…
"Hey guys, I just got an e-mail from Oliver. It looks like he'll be meeting us in Paris in two days." Kenny exclaimed. "We're gonna have to take the train there, so it's going to take a day until we actually get to Paris. So everyone should pack their bags and get ready for a long train ride tomorrow morning." He said.
"Alright! I can't wait to taste his cooking again. Man I just gotta love that guy's food!" Tyson cheered.
"You like all food." Hilary sighed. Tyson just gave her a glare and everyone laughed. Kai and Kaya soon stopped the fire, and everyone got ready for bed and started packing their things. None of them could wait until they reached Paris in all its glory.
Author's Note:
So I'm not sure how you guys liked that one. It's not as tragic as the last chapter (thank God), but I don't know if it's good or not. It's probably something you haven't been expecting...so please tell me what you think. I'm going away for five days on holiday (YAY) and I just wanted to update before I leave tomorrow. I'll be back on Monday or Tuesday but don't expect an update until that weekend. I'm really sorry about that.
