Nobody could have predicted the overwhelming amount of attention Amy and Sheldon would receive prior to and after winning their Nobel prize. Neither were naive to the fact that something like this would attract attention however, they never anticipated just quite how much.
The two weeks since returning from Sweden had been a complete and utter whirlwind. From two people that had been deemed social outcast the majority of their lives, now everybody wanted to talk to them and everyone knew their names. Everything moved at such a fast pace, they barely had time to take a step back and process what was actually happening or how they were actually feeling about it, they were just swept up in the moment.
The hype surrounding them was slowly beginning to die down however, Sheldon found himself still becoming overcome with anxiety whenever a crowd (this could be anymore than 3 people) gathered outside their apartment building desperate to get just a little more information on Pasadena's scientific couple.
Surprisingly, Amy was the one that took it all in her stride, never one to relish being the centre of attention she seemed to be a natural in an interview situation. She was so incredibly intelligent, articulate and approachable, she exuded confidence in a way Sheldon never knew she possessed.
"Have you seen this?" Sheldon exclaimed as he leaned forward on the couch and handed his phone over to Leonard. His best friend knew he was reading something and deep in thought, his blue eyes narrowed and his tongue ever so slightly poked out however, the biggest clue that Sheldon was miles away was simply down to the fact he was silent.
As Leonard took the phone from him and read the screen, he was greeted with various comments on a newspaper article that was published about the noble prize winning couple. Leonard too felt himself in deep concentration as he tried to second guess what Sheldon's problem was, all of the comments were incredibly complimentary.
"I don't see the prob…" it was then as he read one last comment that it suddenly clicked. They were all about Amy. "You're jealous because they're all about Amy" Leonard revealed as he handed the phone back to him and stood up from the couch.
"Yes, they're all about Amy" Sheldon snapped as he slumped back in his spot.
"God, Sheldon. Whatever happened to being proud of you wife's achievements" Leonard was used to his best friend being a little selfish but he had never seen that side to him with regard to Amy.
"They aren't about her achievements. They're about how she looks" Sheldon exclaimed. Of course, he was proud of his wife, he couldn't believe Leonard would think anything different but these comments didn't celebrate her accomplishments, they celebrated her looks. "Some are very inappropriate" he added.
At the time of Amy's new look, it really had been the last straw for Sheldon. Everything around him was changing, the noble win had catapulted everything he thought he knew, everything he took comfort in to a brand new height. Then Amy, his one and only constant in life suddenly changed too, it was all just far too much and despite him thinking she looked incredibly beautiful, he instead lashed out.
After drinks with Penny, it really didn't take him long to realise the error of his ways. He quickly realised that although she may have changed a few physical aspects: the shorter hair, the make up and the tailored dresses, she was still very much his Amy. His Amy, and he really didn't appreciate these people (he could only assume men) making these comments.
"You don't have anything to worry about" Leonard reassured him, as he threw the water bottle he had pulled from the fridge from hand to hand. "They're just expressing an opinion" Leonard tried to flip the situation, maybe Sheldon would see it differently that way. He didn't.
"Opinions about my wife"
"Sheldon, they're being really nice. I'm sure Amy would love to read them" he sat himself back down on the couch, taking a gulp of water from the bottle.
"Leonard, I think I might be feeling an overwhelming sense of protectiveness towards Amy" Sheldon admitted. He was almost certain he had never felt this way before, he imagined this was how a mother felt when they had to protect their baby, this strong overwhelming urge. He had never met the people who were leaving these comments before but already he knew he didn't like them.
"You're feeling jealous, that's what it is"
Maybe there was a bit of jealously involved. Amy had never really received attention from men before, he had never really had to deal with competition. He had never had to face losing her to somebody else (apart from the time they were broken up and she dated Dave but then she wasn't really his anymore), now there looked to be many more options out there. Options that she might even consider.
"What can I do?" Sheldon asked. "Surely you've felt like this with Penny" and just like that any sympathy that Leonard felt for Sheldon melted away. It made perfect sense to Sheldon that Leonard would have experienced what he was feeling more than once. Penny was gorgeous and someone who physically seemed way out of Leonard's league. She constantly attracted the attention of other men, he couldn't imagine Leonard was ever comfortable with that.
"Sheldon, you have nothing to worry about. You and Amy just go together" he explained. Although, it had taken Sheldon a long time to see it for himself, their friends knew straight away that they were just simply made for one another. There was no one else out there on the planet that was more suited for Sheldon than Amy. "For god sake, she married you Sheldon" Leonard exclaimed when he realised his words weren't having the desired effect. "Look, if it will make you feel better, just show her how much she means to you" he shrugged. "It never hurts to show them you care."

"You should have seen the little booties, I can't believe someone could be so tiny" Amy gushed over dinner, as she filled Sheldon in on her day out shopping with Penny. They had taken a little detour into a few baby stores and although still quite early, Amy got a little carried away and couldn't resist buying her best friends baby some cute little booties. She knew Sheldon probably wouldn't care but he seemed to be taking an unusual interest in her day.
"More wine?" Sheldon asked, as he held up the bottle of red he had opened at the start of their dinner, his reply told Amy that right now, the future little Hofstadter wasn't really of much interest to him.
Amy placed her hand over the top of her glass and shook her head.
"Not until you tell me what's going on?" she definitely wasn't stupid and knew there was a little something more going on than simply Sheldon's reply of wanting to treat her. She had questioned his motive almost instantly when her eyes landed upon the rose petals that were scattered out on the hallway leading to their apartment. Then upon entering the apartment, discovering a bouquet of roses, gentle music playing in the background and a candle lit dinner waiting for her, something just wasn't right. "I mean the last time you pulled all the stops out like this, you wanted us to have a baby" she laughed, recalling the memory.
"It's not that" Sheldon shook his head.
"What is it then?" Amy asked gently. "Because although this is incredibly lovely, you can't be surprised I'm just the tiniest bit suspicious."
"It's nothing really"
"Sheldon" she sighed gently, reaching across the table to take hold of his hand. "I'm really trying not to worry here" she laughed if albeit a little nervously.
"You don't have to worry" he gave her hand a squeeze. "It's silly" he shrugged his shoulders however, when he could still feel Amy's gaze upon him he knew he was eventually going to have to explain. "There was this article I was reading earlier, it was about me and you"
"Okay" Amy started slowly, there had been a fair few articles and stories published about them over the past few months, she couldn't understand what could have happened for Sheldon to allow one to worry him.
"This one had a few comments" he explained. "They were comments about you" Amy narrowed her eyes confused and unsure of what he was getting at. "All these people were talking about how beautiful you are and some of the comments were very…" he cleared his throat "explicit".
"Oh" Amy's eyes widened, she was shocked that anybody would talk about her in that way.
"I think I got jealous and scared and…I don't know…" he was stumbling over his words, now realising how silly and irrational his initial thoughts were. "Leonard said I should show you how much you mean to me" he explained. "So that you don't leave me" he muttered.
"Sheldon" Amy sighed with a smile, her heart melted at his admission, she now wanted to show him just how much she loved him. "You didn't have to do all of this, I'm not going anywhere" she reassured him. "You're my husband. I love you"
"But what if there are better people out there"
"You really believe there are people out there better than you?" Amy asked, raising an eyebrow. Sheldon always thought very highly of himself, always assumed he was better than most.
"Well no, but you might"
"I don't" she shook her head. "Sheldon, you mean everything to me, you're the person I want to spend the rest of my life with. No comments on the internet are going to change that"
"Do you really mean that?"
Amy got up from chair and made her way round to Sheldon, once she was close enough she reached out her hand for him to take hold of.
"What's going on?" he asked as Amy pulled him up from where he was sitting.
"Now, it's my turn to show you how much you mean to me" she had a flirty smile on her face and Sheldon was too smitten and in love to refuse.
"Okay" he nodded like an excited child, letting her take his hand and lead him to the bedroom.
