"She's going to know" Amy groaned as she stood in front of the full length mirror, smoothing the floaty fabric of her skirt over her very small rounded stomach.
"No she isn't" Sheldon sighed as he sat on the edge of the bed and pulled on his shoes. This had been about the tenth time this morning Amy had panicked that Mary would discover she was pregnant. "There's not really anything there to see" he told her. Over the past few weeks, he too had been examining her figure, not for any other reason but to see if the physical signs of being pregnant were starting to show. She was still small and even though he knew that there was something there to see it was still pretty tricky.
"She will" she insisted, cupping the tiny rounded mound with both her hands. "She has this weird sixth sense your mother" Amy continued to turn her body from side to side examining her figure. Mary Cooper was the most intuitive person Amy had ever met, she was sure she had some sort of ability to read minds. There had been many times throughout the years together with Sheldon where Mary had instantly know what Amy was thinking and feeling. It was a shame her son couldn't pick up on any of it. "She guessed Missy was pregnant before Missy even knew."
"That's because she cried over a cheeseburger at that barbecue and then proceeded to throw up everywhere" he explained, he wasn't present at the time but found the whole story that his sister relayed to him quite amusing. Apart from the being sick part, that made his stomach churn.
"Well what if I do the same?" Amy asked, turning back to face him. He was grateful that she had finally stopped scrutinising her middle.
"You won't" he pushed himself off the bed and made his way round to where she was stood, placing his hands gently on her shoulders. She suddenly felt so small under his touch. "You're hardly ever sick now and so far haven't cried over food" he laughed lightly as Amy smiled.
"Thank you" she smiled as she looked up at him, her eyes more piercing and beautiful than ever, he was sure of it.
"Everything will be fine" he lowered his head and pecked her lips, "and if she does somehow miraculously guess, it's not the end of the world" he reassured her.
Mary finding out wasn't the end of the world at all, he really was right about that. She would never ever voice this out loud, the last thing Sheldon Cooper needed to hear was that he had got something right. She was sure other mothers and mothers to be would agree with her but she just wanted to wait, she wanted to wait until they had passed that safe stage and although she knew there was no guarantee everything would be okay, she felt much more comfortable telling people once that point had been reached. Also, selfishly, she just wanted to keep this their little secret for a little longer, there was something pretty special about just the two of them knowing what was happening and how much their world was going to be flipped upside down.
"If you say so" Amy smiled up at him before pushing herself up on to her tiptoes and crashing her lips against his again. This time it was much more than just a peck on the lips. The kiss deepened and she soon found herself wrapping her arms around his neck as his arms enveloped her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. For a few moments, everything was completely blissful and Amy wanted nothing more than to have Sheldon there and then, these pregnancy hormones did crazy things to her. "Do you have to leave right now?"she sighed quietly as Sheldon monetarily pulled away.
"I'm afraid so" he pecked her lips again. Mary's plane was due to land in an hours time and Sheldon needed to be waiting to pick her up. He too didn't want to leave, it was amazing how much this woman had changed him and opened up his mind to a whole world of new things and feelings. "We'll meet you at the restaurant, right?" he double checked the plan just before leaving.
"Sure" Amy smiled.

As soon as Mary greeted Amy in the restaurant with her southern charm and huge hugs, she was sure she just knew. She wondered if she had felt the tiny, little rounding of her stomach when they hugged or whether or not she had somehow noticed how her hand unintentionally rested there from under the table.
Despite the flight, Mary was on good form, she constantly kept the conversation flowing and had a way with people that was just incredibly natural. They talked about Georgie and Missy and her brood of children, they talked about work and indulged Mary just a tiny bit as she spoke about the church.
"Shall we get a bottle of something?" Mary suddenly announced. Amy felt her heart sink and her stomach drop, she had no idea how she would go about talking her way out of this one. Maybe it was naive of her to assume but because it was lunchtime she figured there would be no alcohol involved.
"You don't have to do that" Sheldon injected, mainly for Amy's benefit.
"No, I don't but I would like to. Let's celebrate, how often is that I come all the way to LA to visit my son and his gorgeous wife" it happened more than enough, more times than warranted drinking to celebrate both Sheldon and Amy were sure of that. Looks were exchanged between the two of them, Amy felt her heart thumping in her chest and Sheldon looked on feeling rather hopeless and way out of his depth.
"I can't drink" Amy suddenly blurted out. "I'm on medication, I can't drink right now" she was calmer this time, a little more composed and less rational. She felt rather proud of herself for coming up with such a good excuse so quickly. It was completely plausible, surely Mary would never question that.
"Well we can still have a little drink can't we, Shelly?" As Mary's eyes scanned over the menu, Sheldon's gaze met Amy's and he blew out a breath of relief, they had averted all suspicion. For now at least.
—
"Is Amy okay?" Mary asked as she stood in their kitchen making tea for herself and Sheldon. Upon arriving back at their apartment, Amy had politely excused herself and headed to the bedroom where she proceeded to take a nap. She had completely underestimated how exhausting it was growing a baby, particularly in this early stage, she had done her research and knew that once the first trimester was over the exhaustion eased up.
Today had made her aware that she really was pregnant, she'd never really had to conceal her symptoms before but suddenly them being brought to the forefront of her mind made her realise just how much her body was changing. How in a few months time their whole worlds would change.
"Yeah, I think she's just tired" Sheldon shrugged, acting like his mothers question and Amy's behaviour was no big deal. He wasn't looking but he could feel his mothers eyes on him, he knew that they were telling him she didn't believe him at all.
"She's hasn't seemed herself today. Is everything okay between you two?" Mary asked as she picked up the mugs and made her way over to the coffee table, placing them down carefully.
"Yeah we're fine" Sheldon probably answered this a little too quickly and proceeded to correct himself. "We're great" he nodded. Mary sat herself down, she continued to look at her son as she brought the mug of tea to her lips.
She slowly began to piece together all of the little things that rose her suspicions throughout the lunch. The no drinking, the overwhelming sense of smell she displayed when certain foods past her and the sudden paleness that washed over her, she noticed the sheer exhaustion that had seemed to consume poor Amy, she knew the girl well enough to know that this behaviour was unusual. There was only one reason for all of this, Amy was pregnant. She was sure of it.
"Darlin'" Mary leaned forward and placed her mug down, there was something about her body language that told Sheldon that she was serious. "I need to ask you a question" she started slowly. Sheldon didn't say anything but Mary continued. "Amy's pregnant isn't she?" Sheldon had to do everything in his power to stop his eyes from buldging out of his head, he almost choked on his tea.
"What?" he asked, he hoped he was doing his best, most convincing acting. For Amy's sake, he had to at least try and deny it. He looked any where but his mothers face. "Amy isn't pregnant, I don't know what gave you that idea."
"Okay" Mary nodded her head and sat back in the chair. She wasn't quite yet done with the conversation. "I just know what it's like. I've been through it twice. I've watched your sister go through it three times, all the signs are there" she left her statement hanging in the air for a while longer. "The no drinking, heightened sense of smell, the tiredness. I'm not sure I've ever known Amy to take a nap" Sheldon knew she was on to them and he really wasn't sure how much longer he could keep up this charade. "I mean when I was pregnant with you and your sister, the exhaustion, wow, it was a lot"
"Oh I know, Amy is tired all the time" for a brief moment, he had almost forgotten where he was. He had fallen at the very first hurdle and his face could now be read as easy as a book. Mary gasped and Sheldon knew there was no backing out now.
"She's pregnant isn't she" she kept her voice quiet, the smile on her face was one that Sheldon hadn't seen in a long time. It warmed his heart that their news made her feel like this.
"Please don't say anything to Amy, she really wanted to wait" he told her quickly, feeling more guilty than ever at the fact he couldn't conceal their secret. Mary covered her mouth with her hands and he was sure tears were in her eyes.
"Oh Shelly, you're going to be a dad" Sheldon didn't think it was possible but he swore her smile grew wider. She was beyond thrilled, she already had a little brood of grand baby's that she loved more than life itself but to see her son, her son who she never ever thought would meet someone and settle down, embark on this journey into fatherhood, well it made her heart just swell.
Hearing his mother say those words suddenly made the realisation of what was about to happen seem all the more real. He was about to be a dad, about to have this tiny little life come into his world that needed him more than he could possibly comprehend.
"How do you feel?" she asked.
"I think it's still sinking in. It's all bit of shock still. We only found out two weeks ago" he explained, remembering the day Amy approached him with a brown paper bag containing a pregnancy test that she needed to take.
"And Amy and the baby are okay?" she asked.
He nodded, "yeah all good, we had a doctors appointment the other day, everything is as it should be" he smiled.
"Oh, I can't believe this" she beamed, placing her hand on her heart. "Shelly, I'm so happy for you."
