Remember the Alamo-Chapter 1
In 1836, Carlisle is a soldier fighting for the freedom of Texas when he meets Esme, a maid of the mission. Will tragedy strike as it threatens the unforgettable past to become present?
Carlisle's POV
Something hit the back of my head.
I spun around, coming face to face with Jasper. He sneered and rotated around, taking off in the opposite direction.
I growled and started after him.
We raced through the hallways; when he jumped high, I ducked low, carefully, recklessly. Until I turned a corner and hit a wall.
Or at least what I thought was a wall.
I fell back onto the dusty ground.
"What the..." I rubbed my forehead and looked up.
What I saw took my breath away.
There on the ground in front of me, lied a beautiful woman.
She groaned and quickly knelt to gather up the linen she had dropped. I righted myself and started to help her.
"I'm so sorry, ma'am. The men at this mission can be so immature. I am truly sorry for the inconvenience-" she cut me off.
"Excuse me," she brushed past me without even giving me a second glance, leaving me dazed and surprised. I stood, paralyzed and staring at the spot where she used to be.
I quickly forgot my unfinished business with Jasper, and changed course, making a bee line after the graceful woman.
Esme's POV
My head throbbed as I headed back to the maids quarters.
Now I had to rewash everything because of that clumsy man that stumbled into me in the hallway. Damn right men could be immature. Living proof.
I hurried back and entered the small room.
"Could you let me squeeze in, Renee? I need to redo these," I sighed, bending down next to my friend and dumping the soiled linen into the wash water.
As I scrubbed, we talked.
"Why do you have to rewash those?" Renee pointed at the rags.
I grumbled. "A little incident in the hallway had my sheets and I lying on the ground, dusty and dirty. I swear, you'd think they'd hire more coordinated soldiers."
She snickered. "You would think-"
Someone cleared their throat behind us. I shot around, surprised.
There was a man staring intently at me. He was lean and muscular, blonde with blue eyes, and his features were very defined.
"Excuse me. This is a private section," Renee glared at him.
He opened his mouth like he was going to day something, but changed his mind. As he turned to leave, I spoke up. "You ran into me, didn't you."
He turned back around. "Uh...yeah, I'm really very sorry about that. I have a very-" I cut him off.
"Could I talk to you outside, please?" I looked straight into his deep blue eyes, not showing any emotion. He looked surprised, but nodded.
I scrambled up and led him out the door.
Grabbing his shoulder, I tapped my foot. "Why are you following me?"
He gazed at me. "What?" I demanded.
"I'm Carlisle," he held his hand out to me. I pursed my lips, but took it.
"Esme," I announced, briskly shaking his hand. "Now, what do you want with me? Because if you-"
He cut me off, molding his lips to mine in a cautious and careful way.
My first instinct was to push him away, but instead, my arms wrapped around his torso unconsciously.
Carlisle's fingers ran through my hair multiple times, and I pushed myself closer to him.
It just felt so natural. Like, it was meant to be.
On that thought, he broke away from me.
"Oh God, I'm sorry. I'm usually not this rude. I'm so sorry, Esme," he started confessing, taking several steps away from me.
I blushed, and smoothing down my hair, I slid past him. Entering the maids quarters once again, I slumped in the corner of the doorway and watched as he walked away.
