Stars Theme

North Star

Riza lay on the sandy earth of the campsite, limbs stretched out from her sides. She heard the sound of his boots moving toward her. "It's strange," she spoke softly, just loud enough for him to hear.

Roy sat down next to her, flopping down, exhausted from another day of fighting a war he didn't believe in.

"This sky is the same as the one back home."

Roy gazed up at the stars.

Shakily raising her hand, she pointed to a large star that was brighter than the rest. "The North Star, remember when we were little?"

"And we got lost in the woods?" Roy smiled, his voice nostalgic. "We climbed that huge tree, it took us almost an hour to do."

"You kept falling."

"It was only because I tried to catch you every time you slipped."

"And then slipped yourself," Riza let herself laugh.

"We got there eventually," Roy laid down next to her to relieve the strain of craning his neck. "We found the direction we needed to go from the stars and found our way back."

Riza turned her head to the side, gazing at him. "We made it through."

"We did," Roy's eyes stared at the night sky, yet focused on none of the stars. Perhaps the black emptiness of space called him, rather than the beauty of the bright stars.

Perhaps that was what war did to people.

"And we will." Roy glanced at her at the firm sound of her voice. Riza stretched out her fingers to gain hold of his.

Roy smiled, his whole body warmed by the simple touch of their hands. "We will." She always knew what to say, what to do, to bring him back. She always helped him stay on the right path.

Riza faced the sky again, eyes moving from one star to another. She was his North Star.
