2 weeks ago:

Katherine had just arrived in Mystic Falls and already, she was bored. She set her bags down in her old room and just gazed out of the window into the rainy night.

"Remind me why I ever decided to come back here," she huffed under her breath.

She could hear Elena's footsteps behind her. "Maybe to see your sister for a few days?" she smiled. Turning around, Katherine met chocolate brown eyes and a gentle grin. Elena, her younger sister, was her polar opposite. Where Katherine was vain and devious, Elena was selfless and honest. She was a horrible influence on her little sister, but she loved getting under her skin, partly because Elena had always been the favorite child before their parents died in a car crash.

"I just hope the grill hasn't lost its liquor license," Katherine said snidely, sitting on the bed. Elena chuckled, causing a smirk to curl on Katherine's red lips as she patted the spot next to her.

Elena sat next to her. "How's Dartmouth?"

"Same," she shrugged simply. "Anything new in the Falls?"

Elena laughed and looked to the floor. "Nothing really. I'm getting good grades and all… Stefan's been helping me with English." And then she smiled, that loopy, schoolgirl smile that made Katherine realize that he was a lot more than a tutor to her. She laughed and rolled her eyes, arching a brow. "He's my boyfriend."

"Ooooh," Katherine smirked, nudging her sister. "He better be hot. And not a total ass… you've dated way too many of those. And no offense, but your taste in men is so …"

"Shut up!" Elena laughed with a shake of her head. "No, Stefan's different. He knows how to make me smile, he's cute… he's so sweet." Her brown eyes hazed over with a silly look that made Katherine shake her head. Suddenly, Elena's phone rang and she jumped. "And that's him. I'll be back in a few minutes." With a huge grin, she left the room, leaving Katherine alone.

A few minutes passed, and she was bored again. She glanced over at the hallway and realized Elena was in her room, still chatting away with her "perfect" boyfriend, the idea that they were probably telling each other every line in the book enough to make her gag. Grabbing her purse, she went into the kitchen and exited through the front door.

"I'm on my way over right now," Stefan said with a smile as he walked down the sidewalk.

"Isn't your car broken though?" Elena asked on the other end of his cell phone. He laughed and nodded, even though she couldn't see him.

"Walking," he explained simply.

"But it's raining!" Elena giggled. Stefan shrugged.

"Guess I'll do anything to see you then," he chuckled. He could practically hear her dramatic exhale on the other end. "I'll be there in a few minutes, okay?"

"'Kay."

Smiling like an idiot, he hung up and continued to walk. The past year had been so perfect for him; he'd moved away from pitiful Detroit, ended up in a big house in Virginia with his uncle, and met the perfect girl.

He was convinced that it couldn't get any better.

His footsteps were silent in comparison to the rain pelting against the pavement. Within a few moments, he was outside of Elena's house, walking up her driveway.

When he was walking up the stairs to her porch, he was startled by the door swinging open then slamming shut. A woman, with perfectly curled hair and tight clothes hurried out and almost immediately crashed into him. Stefan grabbed her by the arms to steady her and took a step back. "Hello," he said casually, eyeing her curiously. He got a good look at her under the porch light: long, black, willowing hair that flowed behind her like curls of velvet, three inch heels that made her legs look longer… she was beautiful. And she looked almost exactly like Elena. Well, Elena except a few years older.

"Hi," she said smoothly and bitterly, too transfixed on her wrinkled shirt to get a good look at him.

"You know," Stefan started, a smile curving on his sensuous mouth as he watched her. "It's raining. Your shirt is going to get soaked anyways."

With those words, Katherine looked up at the sky in shock. "Damn it!" she hissed, hiding back under the porch. "My hair."

He laughed at that. "And what the hell do you think is so funny?" Finally, she turned her head up to look at him with a glare. Her jaw practically dropped at the sight of him; although it was dark outside, it was clear that his eyes were a piercing green-blue. Dark, soaking hair clung to his forehead in the most tantalizing way. His features were chiseled and he looked like he could have been a roman statue. His posture was confident but his smile was gentle.

"Nothing's funny," he said after a long moment. "It's just that you didn't even know it was raining, and your first concern was your hair getting wet."

She crossed her arms over her chest. "I don't get it." Her expression was intimidating, though he didn't react to it in the slightest. This annoyed her but challenged her at the same time.

Stefan just grinned. "You must be Elena's sister, Katherine."

"Yes. I am," Katherine confirmed, still keeping her eyes on him, anxiously awaiting the moment where he would break under the pressure of her stare. He never did. "And who are you? An abercombie model going door-to-door trying to sell perfume?"

He rolled his eyes at this. "I'm Stefan. Elena's boyfriend. It's nice to meet you too."

She huffed, and Stefan simply walked past her to head inside. He opened the door, knowing Elena was waiting for him, but paused to turn to Katherine one more time. "By the way," he said. "Your hair looks fine."

He closed the door behind him, and Katherine smirked, staring at the last place she saw him.

She decided that her vacation to Mystic Falls had just gotten a little more interesting.
