Her spirit was broken. She lay, at last, without trying any further to get up with her killer's boot in her back and other members of the Order milling about her to make sure this death took. Blood dripped from her mouth. The monster on top of her kicked again, and writhing, she curled up into a pathetic ball of running blood, torn hair and clothing, broken bones, ripped flesh, and ruptured organs.
She would die this night, and yet she knew it was all her fault. She had forced her Protector to leave. She'd told him she wanted nothing more to do with him. Hot tears streamed down Chloe's battered face. She'd said such horrible things, and now she'd never get the chance to take any of them back.
She screamed as a sword thrust through her stomach. She was about to die, and all Chloe King, as both Uniter and girl, yearned to do was tell the man she loved how sorry she was. Her eyes were closing when she heard a ferocious yowl. She ached to scream at him to run away and save himself, but even as she breathed her last in that round, Chloe knew Alek would die protecting her though she'd lied to him and told him she hated him.
Yet, when she woke again, he was right by her side, holding her hand and smiling at her from a face that, though it looked like it had been through war, was still the most beautiful sight she'd ever seen. "Alek! I'm so sorry!"
"I know."
"I lied!"
"Sh. Save your strength. I already know. You're forgiven. I love you, Chloe!"
He started to kiss her, but she kept him at bay just long enough to confess, "I love you too!" Then they kissed like never before!
