The silvery-grey haired boy- no, a man now- sat beside the window that displayed a view of the dark city skyline. Rain pelted the ground outside of the stitched-up science laboratory, and the smoke from the man's cigarette began to fog the glass he was staring out of. He sighed, stubbing out the end of the cigarette in a conviently placed ashtray, and used his sleeve to wipe away the mist on the window.
The dark clouds that had rolled in earlier on in the day reflected his mood. With a repetetive click, he turned back the screw that protruded from his skull, and shook his head.
It's not like I expected anyone to remember. Hell, I barely remembered it myself.
The door slammed open as a flash of lightning illuminated the sky outside of his upstairs room, and he flinched, before turning to face the doorway on his swivelling chair.
There stood a short, busty blonde, her hair fallilng past her shoulders, wearing her traditional black top, accompained with a pair of dark, denim jeans. He raised an eyebrow at her solemn expression.
"Marie?" He began.
She pulled something out of her pocket and aimed it at his face. All Stein saw for a few seconds were brightly-coloured ribbons flying by his face, accompanied by the faint smell of gunpowder.
"Happy birthday, Stein!" Marie cried, as she popped the party-popper in his face.
He stared at her for a few moments, and she began to giggle, before breaking out into fully-blown laughter. He sighed.
At least someone remembered, he thought, pulling streamers from the frames of his glasses. She hugged him.
"Thank you, Marie," he said, somewhat sarcastically. She laughed.
"Come on, let's go downstairs. Everyone's waiting for you," Marie told him, grabbing his hand and attempting to pull him from his chair.
"How did they…?" Stein wondered, refusing to go. Marie heaved, and pulled him into a standing position.
"Hurry up, we've been setting up for ages. You didn't even notice we were here?" She asked, almost conversationally.
"No, I didn't… wait, Marie!" He cried as she successfully pulled him out of the door, away from his bedroom. "Who is here?"
"Oh, just the usual crowd. Sid and Mira, Azusa, who brought Mr. Mittens-"
"I hate that damn cat," Stein interrupted. She continued to chatter.
"Kami, and of course, Spirit." She finished. He winced.
"Do I have to…?" he practically whined, and she laughed.
"Yeah. It's not every day you turn eighteen, after all!" Marie laughed, before boldly stretching up to peck him on the cheek.
"Happy birthday, Stein," she repeated, before turning her face away to hide the slight blush colouring her face.
Stein was shocked for a moment, and his stomach turned. He wasn't sure how to describe the feeling, but was pretty sure that if he was capable of experiencing human emotions, that he would be blushing too.
"Let's go join the party, then," Marie cried, and it was with a little less reluctance that he allowed her to drag him down the stairs.
