Chapter 9: Learning About Demons.

A day after the Hell Vanguard incident.

Team Rwby was sitting in their room, still unpacking on what happened. Yesterday they contacted Goodwitch using Tony's scroll and got a bullhead to get them. Tony was sent to the medical bay where he was still unconscious but his life wasn't at risk.

Ruby was feeling guilty of what happened, she blamed herself that they got into that situation and couldn't stop them. Yang was in a similar mindset as Ruby, she blamed herself for this if only she had listened to her sister this wouldn't have ended like it did. Blake and Weiss were still thinking about the demons.

"I just can't believe demons are real" Weiss said while rubbing her eyes.

"I read stories about them but i thought they were just that, stories and legends" Blake bow twitched as she said that, nobody noticed.

"And the worst thing is that they kicked our asses" Yang groaned "And Tony is hunting them like it's nothing"

The door to the room was open and Team JNPR got inside, they looked dejected and tired, same could be said about team RWBY.

"How are you guys holding up?" Jaune asks softly, he had bags under his eyes.

"What do you think?" Weiss says.

"Like hell probably" Nora answered, her energetic personality wasn't there.

"And I thought Grimm was bad and now we have demons" Jaune said sarcastically "My parents use to tell stories to scare me and my sisters so we could go to bed early"

"But they were legends of old times" Pyrrha seemed down too.

"Behind legends there is always a faint truth" Ren said camly "But we won't get answers until Tony wakes up"

Silence set in again, nobody wanted to believe that a legend would be true, afterall, they had their hands full with the Grimm and now they have literally demons to worry abou. All of them were actually surprised that none of them went crazy with this revelation but there was one elephant in the room.

"Ruby, you knew about them, that's why you wanted to stop us" Ren said, breaking the silence.

"Yes, the day I went out with Tony we were ambushed by a demon called Enigma" Ruby takes a deep breath "It's hard to describe it but it was ugly, like really ugly"

"I'm going to kill Tony for taking you to a demon fight" Yang said as her big sister instincts kicked in.

"Yang, now is not the time for that" Pyrrha interjected.

"Fine" Yang shrugged.

"Look, we can all get answers as soon as Tony wakes up, bickering like this won't do any good" Jaune said, noticing that the situation would escalate if they continue talking.

"I agree with Jaune, he must have a reason why he kept it a secret" Weiss being the logical one backed up Jaune despite her feelings.

Before they could start bickering and anything, Ruby stood up and walked to the door. She was worried about Tony and wanted to be by his side at the moment instead of the drama that would happen in this room. Ruby knows very well that coming to terms with it takes time, until yesterday she still had issues believing it but not anymore so she knew that the others will come to terms in time.

"I'll go and see how Tony is doing" Ruby said softly as she left.

A few days later

Things calmed down for the two teams and started to come to terms that demons are indeed a thing but still needed Tony to explain some things. Yang calmed down more but still had a bit of resentment against Tony while Ruby spent most of her time by Tony's side. The two teams could see the similarities between the two but Tony would disagree with that statement, they were kindred spirits yeah, but could be reckless and childish sometimes, but she is better than he is; Ruby isn't wearing a mask of cockyness and jokes.

Yang was the other who looked the way Tony saw it too, she saw what Ruby would have become if she was alone, even some part of herself saw how she would have become like Tony too, only difference is that they didn't lose as much as he did.

Tony found himself in the void of his mind, sitting, waiting and watching the red fog and the silhouette. It seemed less aggressive than before, the fog was smaller too. He relied on its strength again but it wasn't enough, not nearly enough meaning he needs to get stronger.

A hollow beep started sounding while he was waiting and watching, the beeping grew louder and louder until he couldn't take it anymore. Tony opened his eyes to see a white roof with white lights, his body felt really stiff and weak. He brought his hands to his field of view to see that he was bandaged, there was also the constant beeping meaning that he is in the medical bay, still alive somehow.

Tony sat in the bed to see Ruby sitting on a chair but laying her head on the bed, sleeping. He couldn't avoid smiling, one of the first times he woke up to see someone waiting for him. He put his hand on her head and started brushing her hair and at that moment someone got in the room, it was Yang.

"Hey, you finally wake up" Yang said as she saw Tony awake.

"I guess i'm not dead this time either" He sighed "How many days i was out?"

"Almost a week" Yang said as she sat down in a chair.

"Uh? okay, I expected more" He said, scratching his head.

"Is that normal?" Yang seemed surprised.

"Babe, I've fought these things so much that i've lost count on how many time i've been in a medical bay, last time i spent a month" Tony laughed "Anyway, i'm guessing that some stuff was said and you need some answers before the others"

"You damn right" Yang said "How dare you take my sister to fight a demon?!"

Tony sighed, he expected this from Yang as she cared too much for her sister, he knew that since the day they met.

"Wasn't my idea to begging with, we were ambushed" Tony gives Yang a serious stare "I wanted her away when i knew it was a demon but she decided to fight despite my protests"

"It does sound like her but still" Yang scoffed

"It was her choice at the end of the day, no matter what i said she made her choice" Tony raised his tone "If it was up to me none of you would have know the existence of demons, i would have chosen my words better so none of you got curious of my damn business if it meant that you didn't followed me like that night but that doesn't matter now does it?"

"Sorry i guess" Yang was still annoyed but saw the truth in Tony's words.

"Look, i know why you are angry but what happened happened, be proud that your sister is brave enough to face demons, not many can say they did and got one in the bag, same could be say to you and the others" Tony chuckles as he continues to brush Ruby's hair "Anyway, If you want you can call the others and i'll explain some things"

"Sure" Yang felt a bit better now that she talked with Tony but also really did notice him brushing her sister's hair "So, i hope i don't get nephews soon"

"Yang, no" He deadpans, not hand either.

"Hey i'm not the one brushing her hair as she sleeps" Yang smirks.

"Just…go and get the others, please?" Tony says in defeat.

Yang laughs and gets going, she did get a win over Tony so that was enough to make her day. Tony just cursed to himself, why was she so set on pairing the two of them? It's her sister, she should do the opposite or something, not that he cared, he wasn't interested in romance at the moment.

Tony inspected himself a bit, most of his body had bandages, he did take a beating after all but he didn't seem to have broken bones as he moved his fingers and extremities; his eyesight was good, no blurry spots or anything and after talking to Yang his hearing was good. After doing the small inspection he guessed he would be out by today the problem was his physical functions. He kinda needed to test his strength but aside from that, he needed to get stronger and work on his new ability.

While he was thinking Ruby slowly woke up raising her head, not really knowing that she was getting petted by his now awake friend. She had a groggy look on her face and she was drooling, Tony found this funny and started laughing.

"Uh?" Ruby said as she dried her face, still confused.

"I kinda wish I had taken a picture" Tony said, still laughing.

"No pictures Tony…" She said, still groggy but then opened her eyes wide open as she realized what was happening "Tony!"

"Hey there sleepy head" he said with a smile.

Ruby jumped from her chair hugging him in the process.

"Wow, easy there babe" He said joking, masking his surprise.

"Oh my gosh i was so worried about you, i thought you would never wake up at all, i'm so sorry" Ruby talked as fast as she could.

"Hey, don't worry little red hood" He said softly while hugging her back "I won't go down like that"

She stood silent as the two hugged, she was so glad he was awake. Ruby after he saw him collapse to the ground, she felt like she was going to lose someone again and inside she couldn't bear it but now that he is awake that feeling went away.

"I like the hug and everything but it's a good idea if we stop here, the others are coming and we don't want to give your sister or the other ammunition for misunderstandings" Tony chuckled.

"Oh!" Ruby exclaims as he lets go, sitting back in her chair a bit embarrassed "You are right, sorry!"

Tony just laughed as the girl felt embarrassed, the two of them just sat there waiting. After a few minutes no one came with the exception of the headmaster himself, Ozpin, which surprised both Ruby and Tony.

"I'm glad to see you doing better Mr Redgrave" He said with his signature cup in his hand.

"Headmaster?" Both Ruby and Tony said making no effort on hiding their surprise.

"Ah Ruby, I did expect you to be here by his side but could you do us a favor?"

"Sure, what is it?" the girl asked.

"Could you please go to the study hall with the others? Don't worry, Mr Redgrave will join you soon" Ozpin said.

Ruby gave a glance to Tony then back to Ozpin, she nodded and left the room. Ozpin took a chair and sat down by Tony's side.

"How are you feeling?" Ozpin said with a soft tone.

"Honestly, like crap, my body is stiff and I'm still scared" He wasn't going to lie to Ozpin, he felt like he could read him like an open book so he dropped his mask.

"I can imagine" Ozpin takes a sip from his cup "No one expected that things would end up getting this way"

"True" Tony sighs, thinking about how scary was the thought of losing everyone he cared about again "I made a mistake and I almost ended up losing them, all of them, it's a mistake to have me as a student here…"

"Don't dwell on the mistakes Tony, we all make them, especially myself" Ozpin chuckles "I've made so many mistakes that I lost count but i can say it wasn't a mistake making you a student"

"Are you sure? I almost got eight students killed by a slip of the tongue" Tony didn't believe his words.

"Of course, you ended up saving them at the end of the day and not only that, you are different from when we met the first time" Ozpin sounded serious "You have been fighting a war alone against creatures that we just learned about recently. From what I heard you kept to yourself all the time and mostly dealt with adults, no one your age"

Tony saw the truth in his words, he did spend his time alone but never cared about relationships, he had Nell and he could trust her not like the other adults who tried to use him, hence the debt he had but he never had friends like Ruby and the others since Grue and Jessica.

"You made friends with Ruby and Yang, then the others, I've seen you have a good time with them. are you going to tell me that you don't enjoy being with them and would have been better if you never met them?"

To Tony that question stinged a bit, the possibilities of not being with them, to not have met them hurt as much as losing them.

"Damn right I do, I've been having fun even if those Idiots can drive me crazy sometimes with their antics" Tony found himself surprised at being able to say that.

"You care for them, care is what makes us human Tony, don't forget it" Ozpin gave Tony a smile and something he needed to hear.

Tony felt better with himself, his doubts started fading away with Ozpin words. Being alone is something that he was used to but now, he can't imagine himself without those idiots in his life anymore even if it's been just a couple months since he met them. If Tony had the choice again he would choose the same path again in a heartbeat.

He laughed to himself, things changed so quickly but he had something nagging him on his mind. How did Ozpin know about demons? He said he learned about it recently but how? and how did he know about himself and his demon hunting habbitts. Ozpin was a man of secrets, Tony saw that but he wasn't a bad man but some questions needed answers.

"Mind if I ask you something?" Tony said to which Ozpin nodded "How did you come to learn about the existence of demons anyway?

"That is an answer that has some mystery that I am still figuring out" Ozpin furrowed his brow "A month before I contacted you I met a woman in black. She showed me all the proof and told me that i needed someone who could fight them, you"

"Didn't know that i had a fan out there" Tony joked "Any idea where to find that woman?"

"Not at all, she vanished not long after she told me everything" Ozpin words didn't seem to lie.

"Figures" Tony sighed.

A woman in black? somehow it felt familiar to Tony but he couldn't put a finger on why it felt this way so he shrugged it off for now. Tony was also curious about why everyone was sent to a classroom.

"So, the classroom thing…care to shed some light?" Tony asked.

"About that, I hope you don't mind filling us about demons in more detail" Ozpin said sipping from his cup.

"Wait, you want me to teach?" Tony asked, surprised now by the request.

"In a way, yes. We don't have the knowledge we have about demons like you do and in the case we find one we need to have the knowledge on how to defeat them and identify them" Ozpin said looking directly into Tony's eyes "I'm not sending anyone to fight them directly like i do with you if you are wondering, I just want them to be prepared in case the unexpected happens"

Tony sighed, it makes sense what he is asking for him. Demons are a different kind of enemies than the Grimm, cunning and bloodthirsty that will use tactics to get the upper hand so it's not a bad idea that some students and teachers know more about them as he couldn't be in every single place at all times.

"Fine, you got a point we better head out then" Tony said in defeat.

"Glad to hear that" Ozpin just smiled.

Meanwhile in a different place.

Inside the library, a man with a blue coat, and black clothing was sitting on a chair, reading a book; his hair was white and slicked back and his eyes were icy blue, a perfect image of Tony's face with the only exception that his hair wasn't over his face.

"How was the meeting with you brother?" A dark sinister voice said.

"It went well even though it was a disappointment" The man in blue said while keeping his sight on the book "He is still to weak and surrounded by himself by those foolish hunters"

"I see" the voice said as a man appeared.

This man was wearing black ministerial clothing, he was bald and slim. His eyes were of different colors, right was bluish-green and the left one was red; the man also had a burn scar that covered the majority of the left side of his face.

"Did He had it?" The man asked.

"He did but it wouldn't have been fun to take it this way" The man in blue smirked.

"And the preparations aren't completed yet" The man in black said.

"Very well" The man in blue closed his book and stood up "Head to mistral Arkham while i head to Atlas to find what we need, maybe in that time my dear little brother would remember his past self and gain some power"

"Of course Virgil" Arkham said while heading out.

Virgil draws his katana, slashing the air vertically then horizontally creating a cross of light to then expand creating a portal. A smirk was made on the man's face as he crossed over thinking that this world would soon know the power of this devil.

Back in beacon.

Tony was already in his clothing minus the red coat, he was on his way to the classroom with Ozpin by his side. The demon hunter was wondering how he was going to teach them anyway, he never done it before and it wasn't his style after all but he did agree to do it. He felt like he was losing his edge and was too stressed out by the idea of teaching, he hasn't been able to joke for a while but maybe this would be refreshing.

The two reached the classroom and the demon hunter stood still, he was a bit nervous after he needed to carefully do this and not create panic. Tony opened the door to see Team RWBY and JNPR sitting already but they weren't alone, Goodwitch, Port and Oobleck were also sitting there.

Tony just walked to the stage and took a look at everyone, his friends were happy to see him walking again but they had questions while the faculty, now joined by Ozpin, were expecting what was about to happen.

"Well, if this everyone i'll guess i'll start" Tony sighed "First of all, i'm doing alright, this wasn't my first rodeo and certainly wasn't the last but I'm sure everyone is wondering why we are here"

Tony cleared his throat as everyone kept staring at him, they were paying attention for now.

"Someone said at the beginning that Grimm had different names, Demons was one of them" Tony crossed his arms "Calling a Grimm demon is wrong as they are completely different things as some of you might know by now"

The boards behind him lit up showing actual demons, he was surprised by that but it was a good thing meaning he didn't need to draw pictures or anything, he sucked at that so he had to thank Ozpin for that later.

"These right there are demons, hell's spawn so for the two who don't know, Demons are real" Tony stared at Port and Oobleck who were paying attention.

"Fascinating" Oobleck said in awe and fear while Port just hummed.

"Before i go into more details on them it's time i answer something about me" Tony took breath "I'm a mercenary hired by Oz there but that's just the tip of the iceberg because I have another job, I'm a demon hunter meaning that I hunt those SOBs for a living too"

The questions started flying at him just as he finished his sentence, all his friends started asking questions like if they were the ones who killed his family? or how could he fight them so easily? Are demons strong? How do you identify a demon? and so and so on.

"To answer some of the questions, yes, they were who did it and how could I fight them? Honestly, I just give it my all. Somehow i'm stronger than most people and I don't even have an aura to begin with but we'll get into that later" Tony smirked for a moment, they had their attention "Let's start with the class with a little of what a demon is"

Tony took breath as he walked from one side of the stage to the other.

"Demons, like i said are hell's spawn meaning that they come from their own dimension called hell or the underworld meaning they are born there be by natural means or by the influence on a human or faunus soul, the best example that i have is the asshole named Oran, he is a human on his way to become a demon by doing sacrifices and rituals"

"That would explain why he was so strong" Weiss muttered to herself.

"Anyway, take notes if you want because here comes the thick of this" Tony smirked.

Tony started explaining about demons to everyone present, from lesser demons to higher demons and finally Devils. Tony went full in the details that he knew about them, how they can appear on, how they can be summoned, etcetera. The weight of demons set in everyone's mind. Tony also shed some light into the demon tipes, like the seven hells who need a medium, the marionettes who possess wood and transform it or the Finis and Msira who are corrupted souls who become demons.

"Let's leave it like this" Tony said as he finished giving the lecture "There is more to this but it's better if I get some books back at my place so you guys can read it and review all the information, any questions?"

"You say that demons are more dangerous than Grimm but these lesser demons don't sound as tough, why is that?" Port say

"Lesser demons are trash, no question about it but the grand difference between Grimm and Demons is quite simple" Tony puts his finger on his head, tapping it over "They are smart like us, we've survived this far because we adapt against the Grimm. Demons do the same, there are demons that a sword won't hurt them at all but bullets will and the contrary could be said because they adapted"

"I also have a question" Oobleck interrupted, him being the scholar surely had questions "You said that lesser demons use mediums like the seven hells or they can get in by small tears on reality, small portals. Higher demons need summoning by using a ritual and sacrifices but you left out Devils, actually you didn't say a lot about them"

"To be honest, knowledge about Devils is scarce, the best info about Devils is the book that Blake had, the legend of Sparda" Tony sighed knowing that he needed to explain more "But here is a little of what i know. Devils are way to strong, i fought higher demons and almost died, never fought a Devil because they are extremely rare, more rare than a higher demon because they cannot be summoned"

"Wait a moment" Weiss interrupted "Devils cannot be summoned? how is that?"

"Because they are powerful enough that a summoning ritual would break they need something bigger" Tony took a small pause "They need the real deal an actual portal to hell so they can pass over meaning that it would mean a full blown invasion"

When Tony said that everyone's face went pale, if a few demons were dangerous then the idea of an invasion sounded like the end of times with him also the reference book of sparda meaning that it held some truth.

"I see that you guys are worrying about nothing" Tony laughs "all the portals to the underworld have been sealed for a long time by Sparda"

"Wait, did he really exist?" Blake says, raising her head, with a glint on her eyes.

"He did although the information about him is also obscure, but part of the legend is true" Tony scratches his head "Anyway, you can go now but if some of the Teams wants to talk with me about what happen, i'll stay here, next of teacher Tony's lesson will be next week"

The faculty members leave the room while the teenager stays behind, Tony gives a good look to everyone who starts standing up. The teenagers had a worried face so He just smiled to ease them a bit but his face turned to worry as He saw them running towards him. Tony braced for impact as the teens crashed into him in a hug, well, everyone except Ruby who already had that moment earlier.

"You had us so worried!" Weiss exclaimed.

"How are you even standing?" Nora asked.

"Shouldn't you stay in bed longer?" Pyrrha asked.

"Come on, one question at the time" Ren interjected for Tony's sake.

Tony layed on the ground with almost everybody on top of him, he grunted a bit in pain worrying everyone to then start laughing.

"Someone put in the news tomorrow. Demon hunter accidentally killed by his worried friends' hug" Tony changes his voice to a dramatic tone "And to answer your questions, I'm fine, just a little sore and sorry if i made you guys worry"

"Come on big guy" Jaune extends his hand to help Tony stand up "What was that thing anyway?"

"It must have been a higher demon if it gave you this much trouble" Yang comments, her logic seemed sound.

"That was a Hell Vanguard, a nasty bastard who commands the seven hells" Tony stood up with the help of Jaune.

"Then a higher demon…right?" Blake didn't seem sure.

"It wasn't, it's a lesser demon who could become stronger if it had the right rituals and sacrifices" Tony stretched a bit.

"Wait, lesser demons can be that strong?!" Jaune exclaimed in worry.

The weight set in more with that questions, they fought the hells and lost because the sheer number and had no strategy, they all thought if lesser demons were like that with the right strategy they would have been just a bit tougher than the Grimm but with the revelation of the Hell Vanguard being just a lesser demon they had to rethink their image of demons again.

"Yep, but it had a long road ahead to become a higher demon, I would normally have it defeated in less time but…" Tony scratched his head as he looked away.

"You had to defend us" Ruby broke her silence, saying what everyone was thinking.

There was a feeling of guilt, if only they didn't follow him that night everything could have been avoided, Tony noticed their faces and knew what they were thinking. Helpless would be the word he thought, he knows that feeling pretty well but what's done is done and he kinda hated seeing them after all, killing demons was his job and theirs was handling the Grimm.

"Kinda but come on!" Tony exclaims stretching his arms and smiling "It's been a couple days when everything has been this serious so relax and lets chill, that is probably the strongest thing we and I are going to face for a long time so don't worry, you let me handle the demons and everything will be fine okay?"

Everybody was still on edge but Tony's personality and words put them at ease, at least for now as they know they could trust him with that at least.

"Tell you what guys" Tony raised his index finger "What about I order some pizza and we throw a small party because why not?"

"That sounds good" Weiss sighs in defeat and smiles.

"Make it double because I'm hungry!" Nora exclaimed.

"I could use some cheese" Ren nodded.

"I'm not a fan but I could let it slide" Pyrrha giggled.

The teenagers kept talking while Tony ordered the pizza. He was back on business and everyone seemed to be in better spirits for now making him feel relieved as not many are that strong willed after encounters with demons.

Somewhere in Atlas.

Virgil was walking inside some underground ruins, looking for an artifact he needed for the ritual. These ruins were dark, cold and filled with demons, a perfect place for Virgil to do a little warm up. Vergil walked through the ruins until he found the dead bodies of hunters, he found them pathetic, foolish humans that think that because they have a fleeting power they can fight.

Vergil knew he was being watched by lowly demons, so he just stood there, waiting for them to do their move. One of the demons took the bait and launched an attack behind Vergil, the son of sparda just turned around, unsheathing his sword and doing a slash; the demon didn't finish the attack as it just landed behind Vergil who was sheathing his sword.

When the katana clicked the demon fell to the ground, cut in half as Vergil raised his hand beckoning the demons to fight him. Three proudful demons jump trying to get Virgil but he just simply appeared in a blue blur in front of them while in the air with his katana already drawn; he started spinning, slashing the three demons.

As the blue clad man fell to the ground, another three demons tried to ambush him, he just cut them down with his inhumane speed, one cut each. Vergil sheathed his sword slowly as the demons who were in the air fell to the ground in pieces while the ones on the ground just stood still, then the katana clicked making them fall too. Virgil just hummed as he slicked his hair back.

"Not even worth my time" he said as he turned around continuing his path, not even caring what demon type he just killed.

Autor Notes.

Well, this was a shorter chapter and was more talking than anything, about the sudden realization that oh shit, demons are real and they can be crazy strong and dangerous and Tony giving some small info about demons. Also I don't know if I mentioned it before but in my head Devils are like the pinnacle of demon kind, like Mundus, Sparda, Agosax…aggrosax (looks the name because Kiro Always confuses them) Argosax! Demons who can be rulers, that includes Balrog and King Cerberus to a lesser extent, like the weakest of devils.

So, now lets talk about Vergil, he had a few scenes here and there, mostly to introduce him and Arkham, he'll be in the story as he is very important, ya know, Jester and trying to take the power of sparda to himself, knowing how to open the portal to the demon world (in the story it will be using a different catalyst) and also showing a bit of Virgil skills for a second, he is totally way more powerful than Dante/Tony at this moment, HE HAS POWER!

I also wanted to showcase a bit of the team thoughts on the revelation of demons, as it was written, Demons were just legends, child stories, it will take them some time for them to fully accept it while the faculty teachers, being veterans would have an easier time to accept it as they been fighting more than the students and also used to learn more about dangerous stuff.

Anyway, next chapter will be more on the storyline of RWBY, so we can get closer to Dante, so you know what i mean heheheheheehehe

Blazing Ice Cream: Vergil opinion on huntsmen is pretty much as the same as humans, we see a glimpse of it here, he find them weak and foolish to think they can fight with their "Fleeting power" or their semblance, his thoughts on the Grimm will be apparent later on the story but for now i can say he sees them similar to lesser demons but weaker and mindless.

On what team RWBY and JNPR thought, well, they thought about them as just myths, legends and stories to scare children, Ruby is the first to accept them as she knows about them longer than the others but she is still scared, the others will take time to fully accept this reality as they just seen too little and one thing is meeting them once and other is killing them for a living like Dante has, for now they think they are dangerous AF but it will take them time to fully have an idea of what to think now about them. In order who would come to accept the idea of demons would be Yang and Nora being the two more carefree of the bunch, Blake, then Weiss and Pyrrha, Ren and Jaune as the last. Hope i could answer your question.

Mattysteel: He'll have some screen time but not as much as i think everyone would like, He is an important character but he is better surrounded in shadows, mysteries and few appearances, that's his charm i believe, aside from being Badass so he'll be appearing but in short segments like the ones here. And yes, we all love Virgil and his pursuit of power.

JokeAka: It was a matter of time since he made his presence known to his little brother.
