She could hear voices around her, but she couldn't quite put her finger on who they belonged too. Her head felt heavy and she couldn't remember where she was. Her eyes slowly fluttered open and she looked up at the startled faces around her, she saw Dumbledore with his auburn hair, and it all came crashing back down.

She was in 1943.

"Oh my" Dumbledore exclaimed, a strange cheeriness to his voice. "You fainted, my dear. Completely understandable."

Verity looked at the faces around her and slowly sat up, wincing at a pain in her head. "I can't turn back now, can i?" And just as she expected, Dumbledore smiled sadly and shook his head. "Whatever it is that you have bee tasked to do, you must follow through."

"But I can't tell you about it?"

"No, no, no" Headmaster Dippet interjected. "We cannot know. All we know is that you are sent back because of a prophecy. Your name is now Ada Jenkins, and you are to be placed into slytherin."

"Ah yes" Dumbledore said, he waved his wand and he ravenclaw robes transformed into slytherin and her mouth opened but no words came out. It was strange seeing green instead of blue. She ran her fingers over the snake symbol and shook her head, somewhat dumbfounded. "I see this has all taken its toll on you, quite understandable."

"Yes" was all she could manage to say, she hated the way her voice cracked and betrayed the sadness she was trying to hide. What had she done, she was no Gryffindor, being a hero was never something she had wanted for herself, all she had wanted was a good job, to find someone nice and maybe settle down, she liked stories and books of adventure, and sure sometimes she imagined herself as the saviour, but she didn't really want it.

"How much do you know of history, Ada?" Dumbledore said, adding more emphasis on her new name.

"History?" she questioned.

"Yes, the wizarding war, Grindelwald and I suppose the muggle war which is raging all around us?"

"Erm" she began. "Grindelwald is a powerful dark wizard. He is rising to power in these years and many have joined his side?" She honestly had no idea, she had never really paid attention in the history of magic, where this subject was taught. Both Dippet and Dumbledore looked questioningly at her. "But" she said quickly. "The muggle war, there is Hitler and he is German and he wants to rid the world of anyone he doesn't think is the perfect image of what he thinks mankind should be." She knew that much, she enjoyed muggle studies so much more than most subjects.

"I suppose there isn't much more than that. It seems you take more of an interest in the Muggle studies than wizard history?" Dippet inquired.

"Yeah I do" she said uneasily. "The two wars were connected. It is said that Hitler was under Grindelwald's influence, although it has never been fully proven"

"I believe so. Now my dear" said Dumbledore. "It is time to meet your fellow students." She didn't even have time to protest before he ushered her from the room.

They entered the great hall and most people looked at her as she and Dumbledore entered. Dumbledore stood in the middle of the room and let out a few sparks from his wand. Any eyes that weren't on them before, were now. "Now, students, this is Ada Jenkins and she will be entering her sixth year at Hogwarts. I know that Hogwarts does not usually take transfer students but an exception has been made this once. As you can see she is Slytherin house and will serve as one of our prefects." The hall erupted into a half-hearted applause and she slowly walked towards the slytherin table.

Sitting down slowly, most stared at her. She kept her eyes down, she barely even registered the vast amounts of food that was appearing onto the table. "Ada was it?" said a voice, she looked up to see a sneering face.

"Yes?" she asked, trying to put on a false air of confidence.

"What makes you so special?"

"Pardon?"

"Prefect, you've been here ten seconds and you are a prefect, what idiocy is this?" she flipped her hair off her shoulder and continued to glare at her. Verity felt very uncomfortable. She had no answer that she could give. It was obvious she was placed as a prefect to spend time with future Voldemort but she couldn't exactly voice that reason. She opened her mouth to bullshit some reply but no sound came out.

"Olive Hornby, it is none of your business why she was thought worthy for prefect duty." Said a voice, who she suddenly subbed as her saviour.

"Oh Tom" Olive put on a sickeningly sweet voice. "I was only wondering." At the mention of 'Tom' Verity swirled round and in front of her, none other than Tom Riddle stood in front of her. He was tall, which was her first observation. He had dark black hair and high cheekbones, piecing blue eyes that made her slightly uneasy. All in all, he was attractive, model worthy.

"Well, perhaps it is best not to wonder." Volde…Tom replied. Olive sighed and walked off, glancing behind her.

"Thanks" Verity muttered quietly.

"So" he began. "It is questionable why you are a prefect." She didn't reply, instead she took a deep breath and faced her fate. She looked him straight in the eye and smiled while shrugging. "Well, it appears we will be spending some time with each other."

"Ah" she said, again trying to seem as confident as possible. "Is Hogwarts a good school? I have heard many things."

He sighed. "Yes, it is." He said boredly, seeming to have no time for small talk. "Now patrolling starts tonight. You shall meet me outside the dungeons at eight. Done be late."

"Ah yes" she said sarcastically. "It would be a horror for me to make a bad impression." Tom didn't reply, he only stared at her with those calculating eyes. He nodded and walked off further down the table and sat with a small group of slytherin boys, who she dubbed his 'cronies.'

A few minutes passed, her head felt heavy again and she almost thought she was going to pass out again unless she had a distraction. But just then a distraction did appear in the form of a slytherin girl.

"Ada?" the girl questioned. Verity nodded, smiling as best she could. "I'm Jenny."

"Nice to meet you."

"And this" The girl, Jenny, said gesturing behind her, to someone who she had not noticed before. "Is my twin brother Toby."

"Hello" he said awkwardly. "We thought you looked lonely."

"I guess." She laughed awkwardly. "It's a big place"

"Yes it is, got lost several times in my first year. I suppose this is your first year, so if you need directions I'm sure someone will help you. Must be a bit daunting being a prefect, I wonder why that is?" but Jenny didn't stop for to answer. "But either way, it is going to be fun for you, you get to work with Tom Riddle, every girl is well and truly enamored with him, I see what they mean but if I'm honest he gives me the creeps, I think it's the way he smiles, never truly reaches his eyes if you ask me, but I digress I'm guessing you must be here for a personal reason—"

Jenny continued to chatter away quickly and Verity struggled to keep up. Behind her, Toby rolled his eyes and smiled while making a 'chatterbox' motion with his hands. She stifled a laugh and continued to try and listen to the words being said, but she was very tired and so overwhelmed, she genuinely was having difficulty. She never pictured two people like this in Slytherin. It would seem they would fit better in any of the three other houses, but the sorting hat must have had its reasoning.

She couldn't get her mind off of Tom Riddle. If he was in sixth year, this was the year he would open the chamber of secrets and kill for the first time. Wait no, hadn't he already killed his father? No that was later this year? She honestly had no idea and she had to find out, secretly. In the end she decided that if he was wearing the ring then he had already committed his first murders. But even if he had, he wouldn't have created any horcruxes, she knew for a fact that he found out about them in detail this year.
