Chapter Fifteen: A Child Within A Child
Maya smiled in delight at the enchanting sight that greeted her. The glen was filled with the most beautiful golden flowers. The flowers smelled so sweet. Lightening bugs had started to flicker their lights as evening began to turn to night. She heard a thump behind her but she didn't care. It was so enchanting.. As the moon rose the golden flowers let off a shimmering silver light.
Letting out a yawn she slowly sat on to the ground. What was she doing...? She couldn't remember. Her eye lids began to droop as images started to flash before her as she gazed at the magical stunning sight. A man with silver hair tossed her up into the air while laughing. He handed her to a enchanting woman with blue shimmering within her thick ebony hair. She felt the love swell in her heart before her ears echoed with screams of terror, with the sounds of roaring fires. She bolted up with a child like scream of terror before realizing that she was covered in vines. She tore at them franting to get them off. Suddenly a whistle sounded. The vines retreated back into the ground.
"You, poor dear."
Maya gasped as lights surrounded her. Within the lights were little girls of varying shapes and sizes. "Are you okay. That has never happened before. You were just supposed to have good dreams as you became our garden." The pixies all nodded as they murmured sweet tones of agreement. The pixie that had spoke flew close to look deep into Maya's eyes. "Hmm... Thats why. I see."
"What do you see?" Maya rasped as she tore her eyes away from the pixie's penetrating gaze.
"I see fear, fear and great saddness, mother. In your eyes stands a unwanted but well loved child within a child" The pixie turned to her fellow pixies "There is a child within a child in her eyes, my sisters." She cried in excitement. The pixies flew around Maya giggling with delight. A groan behind her cause her to turn around. She rushed over to Fean's side as the vines wound around him too retreated back into the ground. "We like children, so you and your friend are welcome and safe here. Let's play!" The pixies flitted through the air. They wove around her while they sang.
Mama, We love you,
Mama, We care,
Mama, We love you,
Mama, We're there,
Maya began to glow as two little children ran through her and out into the meadow. Twin boys ran in different directions as the pixies played with them, chasing them around. Maya's heart gave a thud as one of the glowing boys raced up to her with his hands clasped. When he reached her he opened his hands to show her a golden flower crown. She smiled as she knelt down. The pixies singing to her, rushed forth to pick it up and then they placed the crown about her forehead and around her high pony-tail.
Maya smiled. "Thank you." she murmured. The boy and the pixies nodded before the boy started chasing the pixies again. One pixie carried a flower over to her. Maya took it gently than got an idea. She wove her hand over it, frost covering it. She than created a clear ice sphere making sure to infuse some permenent energy into it so it would stay frozen forever. Then lifted her hand to her crown, doing the same to it as well. Now her crown and her flower would never thaw. They would stay frozen for the rest of time.
She laughed light-heartedly as the two glowing ghostly boys and the pixies were clapping and laughing at her trick. The boys turned and started to run toward the edge of the glen. She grew concerned and called out to them but they didn't seem to hear. She turned to Fean and with a nod they went chasing after them as the boys disappeared into the dark woods.
The pixies watched as the woman and wolf disappeared into the real woods. "Think she knows or has figured it out?" One of them questioned. The pixie who had seen into her eyes shook her head. "No chance of that happening for a while. They will take her as far as they think is needed. She will realize all of it and she will have to face what she runs from, if she is to get the help she seeks." She turned to the rest of her pixie sisters and she sung.
"Her eyes told me that war's to come."
"Raise of hands, who wants some fun?"
All hands raised high has the pixies let out a cheer.
"Last one there's a rotten orge's tooth!"
"Wait!" Maya cried as she continued on after the children's glow. Fean nudged her before racing next to her. She nodded. Grabbing a handful of fur she swung her way onto his back. Fean raced faster trying but failing to catch up. He stopped and let Maya down as the two glows divided and headed off in different directions.
Maya nodded to Fean as they split up, she following the glow to the left and he followed the glow to the right. Maya raced after the glow as the child's laughter rang in her ears. She smiled lightly before calling out to the little boy to wait up. She slowed to a stop as she reached a cliff face. She frowned as the glow at the top disappeared.
Without even thinking about it she started to climb. As she climbed she started to think. 'What on earth am I doing?' She huffed as she reached for a root that was sticking out only to miss and get a good look at the ground below. Growling, she tried again, this time succeeding as she grasped a tight hold on the root. She was half way there and she had to take a break on the ledge she had pulled herself onto with the help of the root.
She hoped that Fean was having better luck. She drew in a deep breathe and came to the cliff side and began to climb once more before she was struck with inspiration. "Yup! I am an idiot!" She huffed as she place her hand to the side of the cliff that she was currently grasping. Ice flew from her finger tips and slid up the face growing crystal like spikes making a path up the side.
Maya grinned as she grabbed the ice and started to climb up the path with ease. The wind whipping through her curled hair and she let out a sigh. She reached the top of the cliff edge in a half an hour and gasped at the sight.
There standing in front of her was a unicorn. It's silver mane blowing in the gentle wind. It nodded to her. 'You have long to go child. I come to give you aide. Your heart's light has shone me the way to you. After you are rested we will continue your journey. Fear not for the children they are safe.'
Maya nodded in awe at the voice's whisper. She slumped against the tree. 'Beautiful' She thought. The unicorn shimmered with a soft glow. Its coat glistening in the rising sun. "My name is Maya. What is your name."
'I have no name child. I am just known as a unicorn. Do I need one?'
Maya thought about it for a second before nodding. "Would you mind if I called you Winter? Your beauty reminds me of the crisp warm beauty of winter." The unicorn's eyes smiled at her before nodding. 'Than from now on I shall be known as Winter.'
Maya stood up. "Where will you take me?" Winter bowed low so she could climb on. She had never ridden a horse, let alone a unicorn. As Winter started to move she instinctively tightened her thighs and gently grabbed her new friend's mane. "I will take you as far as the base of the dragon's mountain. When you arrive you will need a gift to give them or they will eat you and your friend. We shall arrive at the other side of the mountain. You will have to climb over it and to the top. When you reach the top of the top of the mountain, you will see a light blue flower. Pick only one. Do not smell it. When the time is right you will have need for it. Now tighten your grip on my mane. We run now."
That was the only warning she got before Winter raced toward the mountain off in the distance. Winter making quick work of the path in front of them. Maya leaned over her new friend's neck as she kept her balance with ease. It was a little harder than riding Fean but not by much. She knew that she would be sore tomorrow. If there was a tomorrow for her.
Sarah rode the war horse down the line that had formed. Nadine had returned to inform her that the Above world's air was filled a panic. The elven generals had dispersed to the different portals readying their warriors and soldiers as each kingdom's generals and healers were briefed as well.
She looked out toward her kingdom's warriors and soldiers. She shouted into the silence. Them awaiting her speech.
"LOOK AROUND YOU!"
"I DO NOT SEE A DIFFERANCE!"
"WE STAND TOGETHER THIS DAY!"
"TO FIGHT FOR OUR LIFES."
"OUR CHILDREN'S LIVES AND FUTURES."
" TODAY WE ARE ONE IN BLOOD,"
"AND"
"MANY IN BODY!" Sarah grinned as the roar was deafening. She sent up a pray to the gods and goddesses for help as she turned to face the portal. Her archers at the ready as the crowd fell silent.
A figure watched with a satisfied smirk as hordes of creatures both big and small swarmed through the portals.
He looked down at his daughter and smirked. "Now it ends." She smirked back while nodding as they stepped through the portal. Three dragons roaring into the distance.
Maya groaned as she got off her friend. Winter was fun to ride but the hour she rode her was enough to make her stumble as she found that the ground and her feet couldn't quite see eye to eye as the ground seemed to roll and heave under her feet. Maya sent a glare toward Winter as she stood within the forest. Not venturing further. Laughter echoing in her mind at her plight.
"Very funny." Will I see you again?" Her eyes sad at the thought. 'You and I will never be far apart child. We are friends. Our friendship will continue. Now hurry! The war has started! Remember the flower. Far thee well.'
Maya bowed with respect to Winter as her friend turned to race back into the woods before looking up at the steep mountain. Remembering her trick from early she sent a trial of ice up to the top as spikes grew out for her to steadily herself with. She began her trek with as much speed as she dare.
A/N: Well that's it for this chapter. Will Maya succeed? Will they survive the war to come? What will happen with the dragons? Will she get their help? What did the pixies mean by a child with in a child? Find out in the next chapter. As always please leave a review at the door.
