A Cagebird out in the Big Wide World
Chapter 2
In the next morning Sebastian was on his way to wake up Baldroy who had overslept... again.
"I have said to Baldroy that as the servant of Phantomhive household he must be awake when I'm going to give day's jobs," Sebastian muttered. "And still he oversleep."
Sebastian walked to the the chef's bedroom door, knocked and said with loud voice: "Baldroy! Wake up, Baldroy! It's getting late and you should already be doing your duties."
No answer came from the room. Sebastian knocked on the door again and waited. Still no answer. Sebastian sighed with annoyance, opened the door and entered the room.
After he entered in the room the dark butler saw that both beds were empty. Before Sebastian had time to ask Baldroy again, the boy's blanket under the bed caught his attention. Sebastian knelt next to the bed and noticed somebody under the blanket.
"May I ask why are you there?" Sebastian asked.
The somebody under the blanket wimpered.
"Answer my question," Sebastian ordered calmly.
The blanket moved and soon the boy's head peeked under the blanket. The boy's face was still expressionless but his eyes were scared.
"I-I..." the boy whispered.
"You what?" Sebastian asked with hint of impatience. "Where is Baldroy?"
"T-that man…" the boy answered with barely audible voice. "I-I... killed him..."
Sebastian and the boy walked in the halls because Sebastian had decided that he has to see the corpse before thinking how to solve up the situation.
Suddenly the boy stopped and pointed at the floor. "T-there... I-I didn't mean to... kill him... bu-but..." the boy stuttered.
Sebastian stared at "the corpse", blinked slowly twice, glanced at the boy and turned his eyes back at "the corpse"...
"He did what?" Ciel Phantomhive asked.
Sebastian gave an amused smile while he poured more tea. "That boy "killed" one of your marble statues, young master."
"In other words he broke it," Ciel sighed. "I hope it wasn't one of those expensive ones." Ciel stared at his butler who smiled knowingly and the young earl sighed louder while facepalming.
"Do you already have plans for the boy?" Sebastian asked after he placed a tea cup in front of his master.
"Hmmm... Not yet," Ciel answered while opening the newspaper. "But I'll think something. Until then watch after him so he doesn't destroy something expensive again."
Sebastian bowed. "As you wish, young master."
The boy was confused but relieved that morning. He wasn't punished for killing that white and silent man because that dark man, Sebastian, had explained that the white man wasn't alive. However the boy had to promise that he would be more careful in future. Then the boy was taken to eat breakfast in the kitchen where the blond man who had shared the room with him, the red haired woman and the older man already were.
They were much nicer than doctors used to be.
Now he was walking down the halls. In the isolated boy's eyes the manor was the most wonderful building he had ever seen. Especially the windows. He stopped to look out of them. Green grass, sunlight, blue sky... The boy stared at them longingly.
"Do you like what you see?" a voice asked.
The boy turned and noticed the older man, Tanaka (in his normal size), standing next to him. Tanaka smiled friendly to the boy.
The boy stared timidly at Tanaka, then he looked back outside and said quietly: "Out..."
"I understand. Would you like to have a tour in the manor's garden?" Tanaka asked politely.
Boy's expressionless eyes widened slightly. Then he nodded slowly.
"Follow me, please," Tanaka said and gestured the boy come with him.
Soon they arrived at the the manor's back door.
"Wait a moment," Tanaka said to the boy who took a step towards the door, stopping him immediately. The steward opened a cabinet and grabbed a pair of black shoes. "You can't go out barefoot. I hope that these are your size," Tanaka told the boy who stared at the shoes. Tanaka grabbed a chair and gestured the boy sat in the chair. When the boy had carefully sat down, Tanaka put shoes in the boy's foots and tied shoelaces.
The boy stared shoes with confusion and waved his legs carefully.
"Very well, let's go out then," Tanaka said as he stood up and opened the back door.
Walking was first a little bit hard because the boy has never before wear shoes but little by little he got used to them. When he got out, the boy stared the scene in front of him.
The garden was amazing. Green grass, flowers in different colors, sunlight on plants... Boy stared at them in awe.
Tanaka smiled, pleased to see that the beautiful garden had impressed their guest.
However, the boy quickly hid his expression. He walked to a bush and touched carefully its leaves. Then the boy noticed a rose bush and studied it.
"Be careful. Roses has thorns, so you may hurt yourself," Tanaka warned when he noticed that the boy was going to touch the bush.
The boy flinched and pulled his hand quickly away. Tanaka knelt next to the boy and showed him where thorns are and then he started to tell more about roses.
Sebastian looked at the boy and Tanaka through the window. He thought that if the boy would learn to rely on other servants of the manor and show his emotions, he would become with little education a good servant for Phantomhive household. Moreover the boy wouldn't destroy more manor's property when he was out. Sebastian observed the boy and noticed that he was very curious about plants and listened carefully when Tanaka told about roses. Soon the boy and Tanaka stood up and continued their tour in the garder. Sebastian left the window and headed towards the kitchenwhere the dinner for his young master should be waiting. He also had a suggestion to him.
In afternoon Sebastian took the boy into the Ciel's study.
The young earl sat at his desk and studied the boy in fron of him. "I heard you had a tour in the garder with Tanaka. Did you like the garder?" Ciel asked from the boy.
The boy hestitated a little bit before he answered: "Yes..."
"Were you ever allowed to go out when you were there where you were held previously?" Ciel knew that the question was sensitive but he had to know.
The boy flinched slightly but he continued hiding his expression. "No..." the boy finally answered with quiet tone.
"Do you like to be outside?" Ciel asked.
"Yes..."
"In that case," Ciel said, "would you like to become my gardener?"
The boy stared at Ciel speechlessly until he asked: "Gardener...?"
"Yes. You will spent your time outdoors and I would pay for you. You just need to take care of my garden, water plants, get rid of weeds and so on," Ciel explained patiently.
The boy's face were still expressionless, so it was difficult to tell what he was thinking about Ciel's suggestion.
"I will give you some time to think about it," Ciel decided. "Tell me when you've made your decision. Sebastian, take him to his room."
"As you wish, young master," Sebastian said as he bowed before he escorted the boy out of the room.
When Sebastian and the boy had left, an another thing came to Ciel's mind.
"I think I should give him a name…"
To be continue...
