Chapter 9: What Boyfriend?

Hyuuga Hinata pushed past Sakura, bumping shoulders. She ignored the burning sensation of confused stares boring into the back of her head. She ignored the oblivious Naruto boasting of his victory. She ignored the emerald eyes looking after her in sympathy. She ignored the Hyuuga clan's Byakugan watching her from afar. She ignored Kotetsu and Izumo yelling after her when she darted out of the village gates. She ignored her surroundings and just kept running. She ignored the seering pain that coursed through her legs. She ignored the rock that dared to block her way. She ignored the sun blazing down on her in all its glory. She ignored the fact that the enemy could be lurking in these parts. She ignored the stinging in her eyes, the tears that were forcing themselves out of her eyes. She definitely ignored the older Uchiha running from behind her, a good two miles away now.

At long last, fatigue stomped its way into the bluenette, much to her dismay. Her body ached and whined until it gave out on her, collapsing nearby a tree. The Hyuuga curled into a ball at the base of the tree and began sobbing onto the soft patch of grass, unaware of the menacing presence slowly making its way to her.

Hyuuga Hinata. I imagined her to be less… Meek, puny, insignificant. This is pitiful to watch. I expected the kunoichi that healed the likes of Itachi to be at least indestructible-looking. This little girl looks like she's going to break into a billion pieces.

Madara's head materialized, then his torso, then his waist, until his whole body was in view. Hinata, who was still releasing tears profusely, did not notice his presence. His brows knitted together, he was being ignored a lot lately. He inwardly groaned.

"Hey, there, lady! Are you hurt?" Having to put this stupid persona up is so incredibly…well, stupid. "Are you okay?"

Hinata snapped her head up to the familiar, cheery voice. It was the Akatsuki member with the orange swirly mask. Her dreary eyes, red and puffy, picked up his black spiky hair getting bigger and bigger. His arms were wailing wildly until he dropped down into criss-cross apple sauce onto the floor next to her. Alarmed, she sat upright, Byakugan activated. Tobi flinched when the veins around her eyes were visible.

"Eek! Are you sick, lady? Are you alright?"

"You… Y-you're the enemy we fought days ago!" Hinata brought up an accusing finger to his mask. Her Byakugan intensifying her glare. "You destroyed my home!"

"Tobi destroy Konoha? Tobi didn't do that! Tobi was just walking around here, Leader-sama told Tobi to stay put and out of his way or Leader-sama will kill Tobi." He innocently scooted back into his spot next to Hinata when her Byakugan defused. Madara nearly scoffed at how easily trusting this woman was. "What is your name, lady?"

"Hinata. Hyuuga Hinata…" She seemed almost reluctant to say her name, but there was no danger here, is there?

"HI!" Tobi leaped into her lap in a bone-crushing embrace, squeezing the life out of the poor Hyuuga, much like a boa constrictor to a bunny. After hearing the girl 'eep' out of embarrassment, Tobi released the bluenette from his death hold. "I'm Tobi!"

"Yes, I see… Y-you mentioned it quite a lot." Hinata giggled.

"Hinata-chan, right? Well, you see Tobi found this cloth thing while on clean-up duty and Tobi was wondering if it was you who dropped it." Madara reached into his cloak and revealed a lavender handkerchief with her clan insignia on it. "Hyuuga clan, right, right?"

"Hai, Tobi-san, it belongs to me…" Hinata forgot about this. The man dropped the piece of cloth in her hand. Her eyes studied the piece of fabric that she cleaned Itachi's face with. Some blood was still present on it. "Ano, clean up duty?"

"Clean-up duty is the worst! Tobi must dispose dead bodies or else Deidara-sempai will kill him… Even though Deidara-sempai is dead." The masked man picked up a depressed tone. Madara did like that art-obsessed fool. He was fun to pick on. "Tobi figured Itachi-sempai stole it from you because he's evil so Tobi wants to give it back!"

"Arigato, Tobi-san." Hinata, completely forgetting about the situation with Naruto, smiled back to this man.

Just then a cold and dark aura emanated off of him. The sunny, bright attitude was replaced with hardcore malice. It was evident in his voice.

"It's a shame, a sweet girl like you has come to die." Madara's voice sounded like he smoked three packs a day, yet the authority was still there. It froze the blood that ran in Hinata's veins thus making her pale, ghost white. She caught a glimpse of red and black dancing inside of the right eye-hole of his mask. "You stole something from me, Hyuuga."

This "Tobi" brought a gloved hand towards her midnight locks and pushed it behind her ear. His mask was incredible close to her face, even though there was a barrier between them, Hinata felt very violated. If she wasn't so kami-damned scared, she would be strawberry-red from the closeness. Her back was pushed back into the bark of the tree, wishing it would swallow her whole, her hands digging into the grass underneath them.

The man who called himself Tobi raised a kunai in the air. His figure crouched over hers. Hinata watched as the sharp metal came down, as if in slow motion. She imagined that before one would die, they would have flash backs of the moments in their life. She imagined one would overlook and see the past mistakes they made, the joyous memories they made. Moments were captured the moment one would open their eyes to broad daylight or witnessing a thunderstorm from behind a window. The few seconds that counted more than others did. Family reunions, a death, a baby being born, moments that were worth watching. She wondered if that was what she was supposed to see. Her cousin Neji, her sister Hanabi, her father Hiashi, her teammates, comrades, the Hokage, her enemies, Naruto-kun, Sakura-chan, and… the Uchiha brothers. Hinata softly smiled when she thought of those two. The only memories that flashed before her were the ones with them. No longer did she feel scared, because the last thing she will remember would be them. And that's not so bad, is it?

Madara was a bit confused when he took out his kunai to kill the girl. She seemed scared shitless until he began to thrust it. The girl smiled. It wasn't mocking, it wasn't fake, it was genuine. She looked simply at peace. Madara almost wanted to let her live. Almost.

Whizz

A kunai soared through the air, defying gravity, as it grabbed hold of the kunai in the masked man's hand and pinned it into a nearby tree with a loud thunk. Uchiha Itachi was not pleased at all. With the speed unknown to mother nature, he side kicked the stupefied man into the tree with the two kunais. He hovered protectively over Hinata's body, making sure she was alright. He stood over her body, blocking it from Madara's view.

"Ah, so you really are alive." Madara dusted his cloak off.

"I am." Itachi's Sharingan flared to life in pure flaming anger. "It was foolish of you to attack my village. Leave Fire Country. Now."

"As you wish, princess." The man in the mask sucked himself into a vortex and was gone before Itachi changed his mind.

The Uchiha deactivated his Sharingan and glanced at the little Hyuuga girl still on the floor. Wordlessly, he gently pulled her up and she climbed on his back. Automatically, she wrapped her arms around his neck and snuggled her face into the nape of his neck. Itachi trekked through the forest in a slow pace while he listened to Hinata whimper. He patted the side of her leg in comfort.

"There, there, hime. You're okay, now." Itachi cooed reassuringly.

-Page Break-

"Sasuke-teme! I have been looking for you everywhere!" The hero of the village boomed across the old Team 7 training grounds. Or what was left of it at least.

"How odd. I've been avoiding you everywhere." Sasuke scoffed from the training post he was currently sitting on top of. It was the same post that Naruto was tied to during Kakashi's bell test.

"Oi, what did you 'I'm not the jealous one' back there?" Naruto approached his rival, both hands behind his head. He slumped down and leaned at the base of the post Sasuke occupied.

"You thick-skulled baka. You can't even figure out."

"WHAT DID YOU SAY, TEME?!"

"Thick. Skulled. BAKA."

"Why? What happened that I missed?"

Sasuke sneered at his former teammate. "DUMBASS—"

Suddenly, a man of chocolate brown hair and silvery moon discs for eyes appeared in front of them in all of his Hyuuga glory.

"Uchiha. Naruto."

"Neji, what are you doing here?" Naruto responded, Sasuke merely turning the other way, avoiding eye contact from the feminine male. The famous Hyuuga glare surfaced as he burned holes into both the shinobi sitting casually in front of him. The whole damn village is gone and worst of all, his cousin was missing! How dare they sit nonchalantly while the heiress to the prestigious Hyuuga clan is missing.

"Where is Hinata-sama?" Neji asked impatiently. Oh, he saw the whole thing go down. How she rushed in to help the oblivious idiot, how the Uchihas practically took care of her, how intimate she got with the damn Akatsuki-fucker, how the orange baka basically tore her apart for ignoring her like that… Oh, an angry Itachi was bad. But an angry Neji was something COMPLETELY different, especially if it concerned his beloved cousin. Sasuke turned back to the seething Hyuuga, practically watching killing intent roll off the teen.

"My brother went after her." Sasuke shrugged. Neji's eye twitched. WITH THAT CRIMINAL?!

The chocolate haired teen heaved. He tried oh so hard to keep calm. "Why is my cousin with him?"

"Wait, why is everyone getting so worked up about Hinata?" Naruto curiously chimed in.

The two most impassive men in the history of all impassive men (other than Hiashi, Itachi, Fugaku, etc.) stared at the kitsune with the utmost shock and disgust. How in the hell does he not know if he was there? A very pregnant silence occurred. Neji was just about to snap. His Byakugan activated on its own accord. Sasuke, purposely, activated his Sharingan; not wanting to be one-upped by the likes of Hyuuga Neji. Naruto just sat there, unaware of the burning hatred practically being thrown at him with their unforgiving eyes of white and red. Red hovering above him, white spearing in front of him.

"Stop your foolishness, brother." Itachi literally dropped from the sky, Hinata sleeping soundly on his back.

"Aniki." The younger Uchiha nodded, his crimson eyes turning black obsidian. The Byakugan wielder did not stand though.

"What have you done to Hinata-sama. Unhand her this second, Uchiha!" Neji dropped down to the familiar Jyuuken stance.

Itachi took confident steps toward the three males. Swiftly, he laid Hinata on the patches of grass, her head resting on his lap as they sat. "That will not be necessary, Hyuuga-san. I merely came after her for her well-being after what you cause, Naruto."

Neji dropped his stance and Byakugan, but was still uneasy of the man before him. He sat parallel of him, just next to Naruto. He neatly folded himself onto the ground while looking worriedly at his cousin in Itachi's lap.

"No need to worry for her, Hyuuga-san. She is properly taken care of. Just a little heartbroken, jealous, and hurt is all." Itachi wasn't an idiot. He wasn't about to tell them of Madara. But he turned to glare at the Kyuubi container with a fierce heat that could rival the Amaterasu.

"Hey! Why is everyone glaring at me today?!" Naruto whined, watching three very stoic men glower at them with all their might.

"Sasuke, Hyuuga-san, please explain to this unfortunate soul what he had caused?" Both teens nodded towards the older ninja.

"Well, baka, you see—"

"You idiot, I can't believe you still don't see. Even if you are the village hero and defeated Pein, you still know nothing!" Neji basically exploded his top at the definitely unfortunate soul in front of him. "After all Hinata-sama has done for you, you throw her to the side for the pink-headed airhead with the deflated chest. She was the one to always cheer you on even back in the Academy days when no one would.

"She protected you today on that battlefield. Tell me, before Pein nearly killed her, did he touch you at all? Did he come anywhere near you while Hinata was standing? After all that, you yet have the nerve to not only to under-appreciate and unacknowledged her but you failed to remember why she is so important. She risked her own life in favor of yours. I thought you of all people would know a thing or two about being forgotten."

Naruto gaped at Neji. The jounin was a bit flushed from anger and he took in oxygen like a mad man. His brows were frustrated and his lavender eyes were squinted. Itachi looked at the boy with a cocked eye brow and Sasuke scowled at him for stealing his thunder.

"Woah… I-I didn't know… Hinata…" His cerulean eyes trailed onto Hinata's face, whose now awake. The way her hair swayed with the warm breeze made it look like a dark river of the midnight sky floating beautifully in the air. While Neji held a terribly frightening tone in his eyes, Hinata held warmth and welcome in those beautiful moon orbs

She was awake for the whole speech Neji concocted. In reality, everything he said was just an understatement. She was boiling with hurt inside. But to be strictly professional, she mustered up a stoic mask of her own with a tinge of Sai-style fake smile.

"It's okay, Naruto-san. I forgive you."

BANG.

He knew that she didn't forgive and it hurt to know that she was hiding the truth from him. He could already feel the guilt gnawing at the back of his head where Kurama should be.

You're a dick.

Kurama snidely remarked. Of course the damn fox had to say something to make him feel worse, right? Naruto swallowed the lump in his throat. All four shinobi were staring into his very soul, his eyes as windows. He couldn't tell which were worse; the icy-hot Hyuuga glare freezing his heart or the hard, steely Uchiha glower burning his confidence away.

Trying to ignore the three men, Naruto looked at Hinata in the eye.

"Hinata, it's not okay. I'm a dick for not noticing you and for pushing you in the shadows of Sakura. I'm sorry for hurting you like that. I should have thanked you when I came back, you really were the one who saved me; who saved Konoha. You're the true hero of the village."

As always, the Hyuuga melted right before his big, beautiful, bright eyes. Her fake Sai smile was replaced to the familiar and soft one Hinata usually wears. Her Hyuuga mask washed away with her own.

"Apology accepted." She beamed brightly. She felt Itachi's hand over hers as if asking her a question.

Are you sure you're okay?

She squeezes back.

I'm positive.

"Hinata-sama, a word?" Neji nudged his little cousin's shoulder. He stood mighty and tall and stretched his hand out for her to take. Hinata broke the contact she had with Itachi to stand up and talk privately to her niisan.

When the Hyuugas were out of sight, Naruto fox-like grin stretched from ear to ear. He mischievously turned his look towards Itachi.

"So, you and Hinata, huh?" Naruto started. Sasuke tensed from on top of the post.

"I do not know what you mean." Itachi replied coolly.

"I AM NOT THAT BIG OF AN IDIOT, I SEE YOU TWO, DATTEBAYO!" He pointed an accusing finger towards the one named weasel.

"Che, nothing is going on between my brother and Hinata, dobe. Because she's mine." Sasuke smirked from on top of the post, arms crossed over his chest. Itachi grimaced and cocked an eyebrow.

"Oh, is that so, foolish brother?"

"Is that a challenge, niisan?" the younger Uchiha challenged.

"WOAH, WHO IS GONNA END UP WITH HINATA IN THE END?!" Naruto excitedly boomed. Since there wasn't any television (or any entertainment for that matter) anymore, watching the love triangle between the Uchiha brothers and the Hyuuga heiress just might be better than Real Housewives of Sunagakure or maybe even the other reality show the Avatar: the Last Airbender. Naruto always wondered how they were able to control elements with their chakra. He asked the old cabbage man but all he said that those 'benders' more troublesome than ninjas…

Anyways, while Naruto pondered about how hot Katara was, Itachi and Sasuke were having a stare-off.

-Page Break-

Neji led Hinata away from the three men, out of ear-shot. The older Hyuuga turned around to face Hinata once again.

"Hinata-sama, I am aware of your… relationship." The way Neji said 'relationship' made Hinata's stomach churn. "I do not approve."

She bowed her head lower and wringed her hands together in front of her. Her hair created a blue curtain, separating herself from her cousin's piercing and disapproving stare. She knew it came to this. Her family would always disapprove. Neji placed a hand on her shoulder and took a long, deep breath.

"Hinata-sama, are you sure this is what you want?"

Hinata, on auto-pilot, nodded.

"I will support you no matter what, Hinata-sama. You know that. Just know that I will use the forces of the universe, the powers of the gods, the hatred of the devil himself, to destroy that man if he ever hurt you. Emotionally or physically. Understand that Hinata-sama. You are my priority. Remember that."

Hinata finally looked up at Neji's smiling face. He was always so over-protective. Shocking the boy, she lunged at his waist and embraced him. She buried her face in his chest while saying a thousand thank yous. Neji smiled contently over his cousin. Wrapping an arm around her shoulders, he patted his free hand on her blue head.

"Now… Let's take you back to your boyfriend."
